ANIMAL anesthesia , *HEMATOLOGY , *ANESTHETICS , *PHARMACODYNAMICS , *CARASSIUS , *CARP ,EFFECT of stress on fishes - Abstract
Fish display robust neuroendocrine and physiologic stress responses to noxious stimuli. Many anesthetic, sedative, or analgesic drugs used in other vertebrates reduce stress in fish, decrease handling trauma, minimize movement and physiologic changes in response to nociceptive stimuli, and can be used for euthanasia. But extrapolating from limited published anesthetic and sedative data to all fish species is potentially harmful because of marked anatomic, physiologic, and behavioral variations; instead, a stepwise approach to anesthetizing or sedating unfamiliar species or using unproven drugs for familiar species is advisable. The anesthesia with etomidat and clove oil was efficient in all three species; the other anesthetics had variable effects. Fish blood sampling is possible using different techniques, regarding fish size and purpose of the study. The results of hematological profile for the three freshwater species were in range of reference values, with the presence of an anemic syndrome in Cyprinus carpio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ovaries harvested from three healthy domestic cats, had been histologicaly processed. At microscopically examination, beside a large number of mono-oocyte follicles had been also evidentiated follicles with more than one oocyte (multioocyte follicles). Such follicles we observed in the first three follicular development stages, they being relatively numerous in primordial follicle stage, but decreasing as occurrence towards antral follicles. If in the initial stage, the oocytes are comparable between them, in the following stages some of oocytes degenerate, so in the end of antral follicle stage we could not identify a follicle with more then one apparently normal oocyte. All identified De Graff follicles presented one oocyte, so it is difficult to say if one of them was multioocyte follicle at the beginning and lost the surplus of oocytes, or all the multioocyte follicles vanish before this stage. Based on the events development, we consider that the multioocyte follicles do not have major functional significance, at least not a positive one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Local anesthetic in contact with nervous fibres or nervous fibres terminations, temporary suspends their functions resulting local insensitivity. These drugs have electivity for fibres and sensitive terminations, sometime they are able to substitute narcosis which in some situations could not be use. Regional anesthesia it is a technique relatively easy to perform, efficient by pain suppression, cheap and it is possible to be applied at horses even in field conditions. She allows performing different surgical interventions, alone or in combination with general anesthesia, is useful in differential diagnosis of lameness on horses, and also in therapy. Depending of our intention, the anesthetic blocks are: troncular blocks, plexus block, epidural block, paravertebral block and medullary block. To practice these techniques it is necessary being familiar with administration sites and procedure, besides knowing witch anesthetics are recommended to be use. By regional anesthesia it is possible to block following nerves: frontal, ophthalmic, auriculopalpebral, infraorbitar, maxillary, mental, mandibulo-alveolar, lingual and hypoglossal, superior cervical, thoracoventral, intercostals, paravertebral and paralumbar, lumbosacral and sacral-coccygeal, median, musculocutaneous, ulnar, radial, tibial, fibular, palmar, plantar and digital nerves. The analgesics used by us were Xiline 2%, Lidocaine 2%, Procaine 4% and Bupivacaine 0,75%, 10 ml dosage injected in vicinity of nerves. The analgesic effect last 30-40 min. for Lidocaine and Procaine, 30-90 min. for Xiline and 1-6 hours for Bupivacaine situation in which anesthetic effect began later, after 30-45 min. We recommend regional anesthesia to be use in differential diagnosis of equine lameness and various surgical interventions or in association with general anesthesia and/or local anesthesia. WOUND care , *TEMPOROMANDIBULAR joint , *MYOBLASTS , *HISTOLOGICAL techniques , *REGENERATION (Biology) - Abstract
In 3 pigs aged 3 months a deep incision in the mandibular region was practiced and then the wound was let for healing. After 2 months, for histological investigations, samples were collected from the area of intervention. Histological examinations showed advanced reparatory processes, but not fully completed. Reparatory tissue proliferated in the region was mostly connective, but there were also young muscle cells (myoblasts) disposed inside of muscle fascicles, close to them or dispersed in the connective tissue distant from them. The experiment shows that postoperative repair (regeneration) from the mandibular region in pigs is made both with connective tissue and also with muscular tissue, but the proportion of them is clearly in favor of connective tissue whose proliferation speed is much higher. - Abstract
Despite the increasingly recognized eco-epidemiological importance of ticks as vectors for numerous zoonotic pathogens in urban areas, data regarding the pathogen diversity and co-infection rates in ticks and wildlife hosts in urban and peri-urban Romania are scanty. We aimed to establish the risk of human exposure to co-infected ticks in Cluj-Napoca, a major city in Romania. DNA was isolated from 151 questing ticks: Ixodes ricinus ( n = 95), Haemaphysalis punctata ( n = 53), Dermacentor reticulatus ( n = 2), and Dermacentor marginatus ( n = 1); 222 engorged ticks: I. ricinus ( n = 164), I. hexagonus ( n = 36), H. punctata ( n = 16), H. concinna ( n = 6), and 70 tissue samples collected from wildlife hosts during 2018 in five urban, and two peri-urban sites. Using a pre-designed Fluidigm real-time PCR dynamic array, all DNA samples were individually screened for the presence of 44 vector-borne pathogens. Subsequently, conventional PCRs were performed for a selection of samples to allow validation and sequencing. In total, 15 pathogens were identified to species and 6 to genus level. In questing ticks, single infections were more common than co-infections. Seven Borrelia spp. were detected in questing I. ricinus , and three in H. punctata ticks. An overall high prevalence 26.35% (95% CI: 19.46-34.22) and diversity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was seen in urban questing ticks. Other pathogens of the order Rickettsiales were present with variable prevalence. Co-infections occurred in 27.4% (95% CI: 18.72-37.48) of all infected questing ticks. In engorged ticks the overall Bo. burgdorferi sensu lato prevalence was 35.6% (95% CI: 29.29-42.27), with five species present. Pathogens of the order Rickettsiales were also frequently detected. We report for the first time in Romania the presence of Rickettsia aeschlimannii and Rickettsia felis . Overall, from the infected engorged ticks, 69.2% showcased co-infections. In Ixodes spp., dual co-infections, namely Borrelia spp. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum , and Rickettsia helvetica and A. phagocytophilum were the most prevalent. Given the outcome, we underline the need to establish proper tick-surveillance programs in cities and include co-infections in the management plan of tick-borne diseases in Romania., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Borşan, Ionică, Galon, Toma-Naic, Peştean, Sándor, Moutailler and Mihalca.)

- Abstract
Introduction: The development of thyroid carcinoma is a complex process, in which both genetic and environmental factors play an important role. The rising incidence of thyroid neoplasm determines researchers to investigate factors implicated in this phenomenon. This article aims to elucidate the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on the Romanian population, studying the existing literature on radiation induced thyroid carcinoma. We analyzed the main studies published on this matter., Methods: We used the PubMed and Google Scholar databases to search for articles upon the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on the incidence of thyroid carcinoma in the Romanian population. After a careful review of the existing literature, we selected the relevant and accessible studies, the first observation being that data on thyroid related effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster are scarce., Results: From the selected studies, results show that there is a possible link between the Chernobyl fallout and the incidence of thyroid carcinoma. Multiple factors have been studied that play an important role in the increasing number of thyroid carcinoma cases, such as: better diagnostic techniques, incidentalomas, microcarcinomas and radiation exposure. In consequence it is difficult to measure the influence that the Chernobyl nuclear fallout has on thyroid carcinoma incidence., Conclusion: Especially in pediatric patients, there seems to be a convincing evidence of radiation related thyroid carcinoma, while in adult patients the rising incidence due exclusively to nuclear fallout is not that clear. Further studies must be done on this matter to clearly see the influence radiation has on the incidence of thyroid cancer.

- Abstract
Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens are mosquito-borne nematodes, primarily infecting dogs, but also other species of carnivores and even humans. Given their impact on animal and human health, the transmission of these filarioids has been widely studied. The microfilariaemia has been shown to have a circadian variation for both Dirofilaria species infecting dogs. Due to methodological difficulties, the periodicity was only studied using venous blood samples, while the mosquitoes feed, in fact, on capillary blood. In this context, the present study aimed to test the feasibility of using triatomine bugs for the collection of capillary blood and to comparatively evaluate the level of microfilariaemia and its circadian variation in capillary blood vs. peripheral venous blood in a dog naturally co-infected with D. immitis and D. repens. The results showed a feeding success of 50%, with variations in the blood meal volume that the bugs ingested. The relative values of microfilariaemia (mf/bug) were strongly correlated with the volume of blood recovered: the more blood recovered from each bug, the higher values of microfilariaemia in the evening samples while the opposite results were obtained for the morning samples. The counting of microfilariae revealed a dominance of D. immitis in all the samples, but with significantly higher microfilariaemia in the venous blood. Meanwhile, for D. repens, the situation was opposite, with higher counts in the capillary blood samples. Our study showed that triatomine bugs can be used as a model for the collection and study of microfilariaemia in the capillary blood in mammals., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

- Abstract
Background: Sentinel lymph-node scintigraphy is a useful method for accurate staging of different tumors and a helpful tool in personalized therapy for oncological patients. The radiation exposure for surgical staff has been a concern since the sentinel lymph-node detection method was developed., Objective: The objective of the study was to determine and quantify the exposure to radiation of the non-dominant index for the surgeon performing sentinel lymph-node removal and to determine, if there is an irradiation risk imposed during the surgical procedure., Method: We performed a study over a period of one year, where we evaluated the exposure of surgeon's non-dominant index during 196 sentinel lymph-node removal procedures. The pharmaceutical was administrated via subcutaneous injection in four peritumoral or perilesional injection sites. The equipment we used consisted of EuroProbe3 for sentinel lymph-node detection and ring TLD dosimeter placed on the surgeon's non-dominant index., Results: The clinical distribution was: 104 melanomas, 84 breast carcinomas, 6 vulvar carcinomas and 2 penial carcinomas. The administered activity showed an average of 39.55 MBq (SD ± 1.96) Tc-99m nanoalbumin compound. The non-dominant index exposure ranged between 0.10 mSv and 0.13 mSv/month with a cumulative dose of 1.31 mSv/year, thus 6.69 µSv per procedure., Conclusion: The surgeon received a minimal dose for the non-dominant index. The values we recorded did not pose any additional concerns or restrictions, the exposure being under the limits and constraints established by regulations, close to the detectability limit of the dosimeter. The procedure is safe in terms of radiation protection, respecting the limitation and optimization principles., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.org.)

- Abstract
Introduction: Quality of life (QoL) has received increasing interest in the last years, especially in patients with cancer. This article aims to analyze a selection of medical research papers regarding the quality of life in patients with thyroid carcinoma. We overviewed the main QoL aspects derived from several studies and highlighted those less researched issues, which could represent a solid base for future clinical studies., Method: We used an integrative selection method of medical literature, choosing mostly "free access" studies, as it was considered that they could be easily viewed, searched and researched including by patients., Results: After an integrative literature review, we selected 16 relevant studies. Patients with thyroid cancer have several factors influencing their QoL, with both physical and psychological impact. The decisive factors are the quality of the surgical act, radioiodine therapy, follow-up using rh-TSH vs. hormonal withdrawal, access to behavioral help and the relationship with their physician., Conclusion: We must understand the emotional impact of the cancer diagnosis on the patient and we must collaborate in order to help the patient restore the psychosomatic balance and to recover the quality of life.

- Abstract
Background and Aims: Melanoma is a disease that has an increasing incidence worldwide. Sentinel lymph node scintigraphy is a diagnostic tool that offers important information regarding the localization of the sentinel lymph nodes offering important input data to establish a pertinent and personalized therapeutic strategy. The golden standard in body contouring for sentinel lymph node scintigraphy is to use a planar flood source of Cobalt-57 (Co-57) placed behind the patients, against the gamma camera. The purpose of the study was to determine the performance of the procedure using a flood calibration planar phantom filled with aqueous solution of Technetion-99m (Tc-99m) in comparison with the published data in literature where the gold standard was used., Methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Nuclear Medicine of Oncology Institute "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuţă" Cluj-Napoca in 95 patients, 31 males and 64 females. The localization of the lesions was grouped by anatomical regions as follows: 23 on lower limbs, 17 on upper limbs, 45 on thorax and 10 on abdomen. The calibration flood phantom containing aqueous solution of Tc-99m pertechnetate was used as planar source to visualize the body contour of the patients for a proper anatomic localization of detected sentinel lymph nodes. The radiopharmaceutical uptake in sentinel lymph nodes has been recorded in serial images following peritumoral injection of 1 ml solution of Tc-99m albumin nanocolloids with an activity of 1 mCi (37 MBq). The used protocol consisted in early acquired planar images within 15 minutes post-injection and delayed images at 2-3 hours and when necessary, additional images at 6-7 hours. The acquisition matrix used was 128×128 pixels for an acquisition time of 5 - 7 minutes. The skin projection of the sentinel lymph nodes was marked on the skin and surgical removal of detected sentinel lymph nodes was performed the next day using a gamma probe for detection and measurements., Results: The sentinel lymph nodes were detected in 92 cases and confirmed with the gamma probe during the surgical procedure. The localization of the lymph nodes was as follows: for the tumors localized on lower limb 23 lymph nodes were localized in inguinal region, for the tumors localized on upper limb, 17 lymph nodes were localized in axilla, for the tumors localized on the thorax, 40 lymph nodes were localized in axilla and 3 were localized in the inguinal region; for the tumors localized on the abdomen, 1 lymph node was localized in axilla and 8 lymph nodes was localized in inguinal region. Regarding the negative sentinel lymph node cases, 2 cases were registered for primarily lesions localized on thorax and 1 for a lesion localized on abdomen. According to histology, 26 cases revealed lymphatic metastatic invasion. Dose rates measured at 1m from the calibrator phantom had an average value of 3.46 μSv/h (SD 0.19) and at 1.4m, the value was 2.57 μSv/h (SD 0.22). Dose rates measured at the same distances from the Co-57 planar flood source had a average values of 32.5μSv/h (SD 0.11) respectively 24.1 μSv/h (SD 0.14)., Conclusion: The planar calibration flood phantom is an effective tool for body contouring in sentinel lymph node scintigraphy and offers accurate anatomical information to efficiently localize the detected sentinel lymph nodes in melanoma, being for the first time used and mentioned as a pertinent alternative in our department.

- Abstract
Background and Aims: The most common thyroid disorders, with an increasing detection worldwide, are the thyroid nodules and thyroiditis, which leads to an increase of thyroid cancer incidence . In two different countries with a different exposure to risk factors for thyroid cancer, such as Cyprus and Romania, the rank of thyroid cancer among other neoplasms is very different: the 3(rd) most prevalent cancer among females in Cyprus and the 12(th) in Romania, respectively. Environmental chemicals, such as bisphenol A have a proven effect on the thyroid function. However, the relation between the exposure to the endocrine disruptor and the development of thyroid nodules, with a potential of malignant transformation has not been previously studied. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential factors that lead to the difference of thyroid nodules incidence in the mentioned countries., Methods: A pilot case-control study has been conducted in 2014-2015 in the "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuţă" Institute of Oncology, Cluj-Napoca, Romania and the Endocrinology Department of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital, Nicosia, Cyprus. Females older than 20 years with no medical history were recruited. Cases were women with ultrasound-confirmed thyroid nodules of size >3mm. Controls were women without thyroid nodules after ultrasound confirmation. All participants provided blood samples for measurements of the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxin (FT4), anti-thyroglobulin (ATg) and anti-thyroid peroxidase (ATPO); urine samples. Demographics, anthropometrics and other relevant information were provided through the administration of a questionnaire., Results: In Romania we selected 51 patients with thyroid nodules (case group) and 41 without thyroid nodules (control group) and in Cyprus 57 cases, respectively 65 controls. After the statistical analysis of the data collected we observed statistically significant differences between the populations of the two countries regarding BMI and the value of the thyroid hormones and antibodies., Conclusions: Using the data observed in this study, differences were found between Cyprus and Romania among females with thyroid nodules the BMI, and the level of thyroid hormones had statistically significant differences. This study reports preliminary data, further analysis of environmental exposures to chemical factors that might have a certain influence over the thyroid in the two countries will follow.

- Abstract
Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are two tick-borne pathogens of medical and/or veterinary importance which are distributed worldwide. Erinaceus roumanicus, the Northern white-breasted hedgehog, is a common synanthropic species that is known to carry not only the hedgehog tick, Ixodes hexagonus, but also I. ricinus, the most common European tick species. I. ricinus is the main vector of both mentioned pathogens. Within this framework and because only limited information is available on the role of E. roumanicus in the ecology of B. burgdorferi s.l. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Europe, we carried out an epidemiological surveillance on this species in Romania. From the 57 examined hedgehogs collected in 12 different counties, 24 presented tick infestation. Most ticks (n=959) were morphologically identified as larvae, nymphs, or adults of I. ricinus. The prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. was 0.4%, and that of A. phagocytophilum 12%. In all positive cases for B. burgdorferi s.l., restriction fragment length polymorphism revealed the genospecies B. afzelii. In Romania, only limited information is available on the epidemiology of B. burgdorferi s.l. and A. phagocytophilum. As hedgehogs commonly share the same environment with humans and other potential reservoir hosts for tick-borne pathogens, our study provides new epidemiological data of public health importance., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier GmbH.
