The PAMELA (Particle Accelerator for MEdicaL\ud Applications) project is to design an\ud accelerator for proton and light ion therapy\ud using non-scaling Fixed Field Alternating\ud Gradient (FFAG) accelerators, as part of the\ud CONFORM project, which is also constructing\ud the EMMA electron model of a non-scaling\ud FFAG at Daresbury. This paper presents\ud an overview of the PAMELA design, and a\ud discussion of the design goals and the principles\ud used to arrive at a preliminary specification\ud of the accelerator.

- Abstract
The rate of the decay of the neutral K meson into KL0 → μμγ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 59 events has been observed with an estimated background of 14 events. The overall Kaon flux was determined to be 1.2 × 109. This observation corresponds to a branching ratio of (3.4 ± 0.6stat ± 0.4sys) × 10-7. Using this branching ratio the parameter αK* describing the relative strength of the two contributing amplitudes to this decay, through intermediate pseudoscalar or vector-like mesons, was measured to be αK*= -0.04-0.21+0.24. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Improved branching ratios were measured for the $K_L \to 3 ��^0 $ decay in a neutral beam at the CERN SPS with the NA31 detector: $��(K_L \to 3 ��^0) / ��(K_L \to ��^+ ��^- ��^0) = 1.611 \pm 0.037$ and $��(K_L \to 3 ��^0) / ��(K_L \to ��e ��) = 0.545 \pm 0.010$. From the first number an upper limit for $��I =5/2$ and $��I = 7/2 $ transitions in neutral kaon decay is derived. Using older results for the Ke3/K$��$3 fraction, the 3$��^0$ branching ratio is found to be $��(K_L \to 3 ��^0 )/ ��_{tot} = (0.211 \pm 0.003)$, about a factor three more precise than from previous experiments.

QC - Abstract
The PAMELA project to design an accelerator for\ud hadron therapy using non-scaling Fixed Field Alternating\ud Gradient (NS-FFAG) magnets requires a transport line\ud and gantry to take the beam to the patient. The NS-FFAG\ud principle offers the possibility of a gantry much smaller,\ud lighter and cheaper than conventional designs, with the\ud added ability to accept a wide range of fast changing\ud energies. This paper will build on previous work to\ud investigate a transport line which could be used for the\ud PAMELA project. The design is presented along with a\ud study and optimisation of its acceptance.
