Prepared for US Environmental Protection Agency Under USACE P2# 477210, “Boston Mills Cuyahoga River” ii CELRB-TDD-WH Abstract Empirical downstream hydraulic geometry (EDHG) is the process of using statistical regression to estimate power functions relating channel properties to discharge or drainage area. EDHG is widely regarded as an effective tool for stream restoration projects and related stable channel design. While this topic constitutes an extensive body of literature, limited information is available on existing models (i.e., regional curves) and common practices for their derivation, especially for channel slope. The goal of this literature review is to provide a summary of existing EDHG models, focusing on the parameters most relevant to channel design: width, depth, and slope. The structure, development, and performance of 421 models are described. Our findings represent the most comprehensive source of EDHG models to date, which can be used for channel stability assessment or design when project constraints preclude the development of localized models.
