Devices, systems, and methods in which antenna elements are positioned together as an array at a corner of a mobile device, at least two of the antenna elements being oriented to provide beams in different directions with respect to the corner of the mobile device.

Devices, systems, and methods for a hybrid high gain antenna in which a plurality of antennas are mounted substantially symmetrically such that the antennas collectively provide 180° of antenna coverage for a surface above the antennas. In some embodiments, the hybrid high gain antenna system can be mounted on a mobile device with sufficient inclinations such that the antennas collectively provide approximately 180° of antenna coverage. In some embodiments, the hybrid high gain antenna system is configured to reach a gain of between about 10dBi and 12dBi at a target frequency of between about 26GHz and 30GHz.

This paper presents the characteristics of the mmwave propagation channel in hall scenario at the frequency bands of 9−11GHz and 27−29GHz. The spherical propagation parameters, i.e. delay, azimuth, elevation, source distance and complex amplitude are estimated by the high resolution parameter estimation (HRPE) algorithm. Based on the results, the channel characteristics, e.g. path loss, delay spread, and angle spread are analyzed for different mm-wave bands. The results reveal that the line of sight and specular components are dominant in such large size scenario at 9−11GHz and 27−29GHz bands, and little differences in the characteristics between the two bands can be observed.

Antenna systems, devices, and methods for providing both end-fire mm-wave high-frequency signals and low-frequency RF signals from a collocated antenna array in which at least one high-frequency antenna element and a low-frequency antenna element are spaced apart from one another. Grating strips are positioned between the high-frequency antenna elements and the low-frequency antenna element, the grating strips being spaced apart from one another by a defined spacing. The grating strips are configured such that a signal wave from the high-frequency antenna element propagates through the low-frequency antenna element.

The presence of numerical dispersion and anisotropy in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method leads to an error in the phase of the numerical waves which in turn degrades the accuracy of the simulated electric field (E-field). In this paper, the error in the mean magnitude of the numerical E-field obtained by averaging over frequency is investigated. The central frequency, at which the study is performed, is 3 GHz and different averaging bandwidths are tested to check the accuracy of representing the large-scale fading. By comparing with measurements, it is found that before averaging the maximum error in the numerical results is of 64% for empty room and 57% for office scenario. However, the maximum error in the mean magnitude of the FDTD E-field, when averaging over bandwidth of 200 MHz is employed, is of 36% and 45% for empty room and office scenario, respectively.

Low altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided applications are promising in the future generation communication systems. In this paper, a recently conducted measurement campaign for characterizing the low-altitude air-to-ground (A2G) channel in a typical Long Term Evolution (LTE) network is introduced. Five horizontal flights at the heights of 15, 30, 50, 75, and 100 m are applied, respectively. The realtime LTE downlink signal is recorded by using the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP)-based channel sounder onboard the UAV. Channel impulse responses (CIRs) are extracted from the cell specific signals in the recorded downlink data. To shed lights on the physical propagation mechanisms, propagation graph simulation is exploited. Moreover, path loss at different heights are investigated and compared based on the empirical data. The simulated and empirical results provide valuable understanding of the low altitude A2G channels.

This paper presents a planar circular patch antenna with high gain and sidelobe suppression working in X-band. Two circular slots are employed in this work to increase gain and SLL, by using the superposition of the field radiated from these apertures. A circle of N = 10 small vias with nonuniform radius load the antenna cavity in order to excite an additional mode and increase the impedance bandwidth. This antenna shows a realized gain of 15 dBi and an SLL of about -14 dB with a relative impedance bandwidth of 4.5% at expenses of an increased area of the antenna. The benefits and limitations of adding more than one radiating aperture are discussed in this paper.

Intrinsically narrowband and highly tunable systemsare a promising way to address the bandwidth challengeof LTE. However, narrowband antennas exhibit low efficiencies.This paper details the loss mechanism of narrowband antennasby investigating the contribution of the resistance of the tuner,the soldering tin and the conductivity of the antenna material.It shows that conductive loss from the non-perfect electricconductor becomes the main source of loss for certain Q values.This loss is intrinsic to the antenna manufacturing and cannotbe mitigated even with the best conductor, i.e. silver. Therefore,conductive loss poses a limit to narrowband antennas and totuning range.

A wind turbine blade comprising a system for monitoring the deflection of a wind turbine blade is described. The system comprises a wireless range-measurement system, having at least one wireless communication device located towards the root end of the blade and at least one wireless communication device located towards the tip end of the blade and internally within the blade body. Radio absorbing material is arranged internally in the blade body in the wireless communication path between the root-and tip devices.

This study investigates the antenna performance of a number of mobile phones widely used in the Nordic Countries. The study is supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers.The antenna performance of the phones is vital for the phones ability to ensure radio coverage in low signal situations. The study is based on the mobile systems in the Nordic mobile networks and on both speech and data services. The selected phone models are among the most popular new phones at the time of this study.
