- Abstract
The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of a temperature of with was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to with a peak diamagnetic energy of and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure . The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above line integrated density and central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

The two leading concepts for confining high-temperature fusion plasmas are the tokamak and the stellarator. Tokamaks are rotationally symmetric and use a large plasma current to achieve confinement, whereas stellarators are non-axisymmetric and employ three-dimensionally shaped magnetic field coils to twist the field and confine the plasma. As a result, the magnetic field of a stellarator needs to be carefully designed to minimize the collisional transport arising from poorly confined particle orbits, which would otherwise cause excessive power losses at high plasma temperatures. In addition, this type of transport leads to the appearance of a net toroidal plasma current, the so-called bootstrap current. Here, we analyse results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, showing that its magnetic-field design allows good control of bootstrap currents and collisional transport. The energy confinement time is among the best ever achieved in stellarators, both in absolute figures (τE > 100 ms) and relative to the stellarator confinement scaling. The bootstrap current responds as predicted to changes in the magnetic mirror ratio. These initial experiments confirm several theoretically predicted properties of Wendelstein 7-X plasmas, and already indicate consistency with optimization measures. Results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator demonstrate that its magnetic-field design grants good control of parasitic plasma currents, leading to long energy confinement times.

The investigation of fuel retention in fusion experiments is important in view of plasma density control as well as tritium inventory for future fusion reactors. We present a first gas balance of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X with its inertially cooled graphite divertor. The gas balance is used to estimate the wall inventory and it is found that the wall plays an important and dynamic role, absorbing or releasing particles depending on the plasma conditions. Several different scenarios are presented and the effect of fueling and heating on the wall inventory is assessed. We find that the record duration plasma experiment of 100 s required previous shorter plasmas to be successfully conducted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a large optimized stellarator (B=2.5T, V=30m3) aiming at demonstrating the reactor relevance of the optimized stellarators. In 2015 W7-X will begin its first operation phase (OP1.1) with five inertially cooled inboard limiters made of graphite. Assuming the heat loads can be spread out evenly between the limiters, 1 second discharges at 2 MW of ECRH heating power could be run in OP1.1. The expected plasma parameters will be sufficient to demonstrate the readiness of the installed diagnostics and even to run a first physics program. The diagnostics available for this first operation phase, including some special limiter diagnostics, and their capabilities are being presented.

The Columbia Non-neutral Torus (CNT) is a tabletop (R=0.3 m, a=0.1 m, B=0.2 T) stellarator now being constructed at Columbia University. The goal of CNT is to study the equilibrium, stability, and transport of non-neutral plasmas confined on magnetic surfaces. CNT will use four circular, planar coils: two interlocking coils with a variable tilt angle, plus two additional poloidal field coils. By varying the angle between the interlocking coils, the rotational transform can be varied from 0.2 to 0.6 and the magnetic shear from essentially zero to 20%. The results of a numerical study of how error fields affect the quality of the magnetic surfaces will be presented. The plasma will be diagnosed by numerous Langmuir and sector probes, connected to a computer data acquisition and control system. © 2003 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is the investigation of the non-linear plasma response of transport due to stochastic effects. On the Large Helical Device, perturbation coils create a resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) with the m/n = 1/1 and 2/1 Fourier components. Depending on the plasma conditions, the perturbation either enhances or heals the natural m/n = 1/1 magnetic island. For the case of an amplified island the enhanced heat and particle transport across the island causes a rather significant reduction in the confinement. For a healed island, there is a small decrease in beta with increasing perturbation current. These changes coincide with an increasing width of the open stochastic volume at the plasma edge near the x-point. Systematic experiments are performed, changing the amplitude of the perturbation linearly with I
RMP in the range from 0 to 2.7 kA. Two scenarios are investigated: first, the discharge is ramped up with an external perturbation already superimposed on the main magnetic field. Second, the external perturbation is applied to the plasma already ignited (similar to experiments with RMPs in tokamaks). As will be shown, there is a clear difference in the size of the 1/1 island and the dependence of ne and Te on the perturbation when comparing these two scenarios. A hysteresis is observed up to a certain amplitude of the external perturbation. The particle transport and confinement are affected substantially in the discharges with a pre-existing magnetic perturbation. Interestingly, a global reduction in Te and ne is observed above a certain value of perturbation current in both cases. However, for the same island width, the plasma reacts differently to the applied perturbation depending on the direction of the ramp.
