Abstract

Electromagnetic waves possessing orbital angular momentum (OAM) are powerful tools for applications in optical communications, new quantum technologies and optical tweezers. Recently, they have attracted growing interest since they can be harnessed to detect peculiar helical dichroic effects in chiral molecular media and in magnetic nanostructures. In this work, we perform single-shot per position ptychography on a nanostructured object at a seeded free-electron laser, using extreme ultraviolet OAM beams of different topological charge order $\ell$ generated with spiral zone plates. By controlling $\ell$, we demonstrate how the structural features of OAM beam profile determine an improvement of about 30% in image resolution with respect to conventional Gaussian beam illumination. This result extends the capabilities of coherent diffraction imaging techniques, and paves the way for achieving time-resolved high-resolution (below 100 nm) microscopy on large area samples., Comment: M. Abstract

Collective lattice dynamics determine essential aspects of condensed matter, such as elastic and thermal properties. These exhibit strong dependence on the length-scale, reflecting the marked wavevector dependence of lattice excitations. The extreme ultraviolet transient grating (EUV TG) approach has demonstrated the potential of accessing a wavevector range corresponding to the 10s of nm length-scale, representing a spatial scale of the highest relevance for fundamental physics and forefront technology, previously inaccessible by optical TG and other inelastic scattering methods. In this manuscript we report on the capabilities of this technique in the context of probing thermoelastic properties of matter, both in the bulk and at the surface, as well as discussing future developments and practical considerations.

3. Element- and enantiomer-selective visualization of molecular motion in real-time

Abstract

Ultrafast optical-domain spectroscopies allow to monitor in real time the motion of nuclei in molecules. Achieving element-selectivity had to await the advent of time resolved X-ray spectroscopy, which is now commonly carried at X-ray free electron lasers. However, detecting light element that are commonly encountered in organic molecules, remained elusive due to the need to work under vacuum. Here, we present an impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) pump/carbon K-edge absorption probe investigation, which allowed observation of the low-frequency vibrational modes involving specific selected carbon atoms in the Ibuprofen RS dimer. Remarkably, by controlling the probe light polarization we can preferentially access the enantiomer of the dimer to which the carbon atoms belong.

Abstract

We utilize coherent femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (EUV) pulses derived from a free electron laser (FEL) to generate transient periodic magnetization patterns with periods as short as 44 nm. Combining spatially periodic excitation with resonant probing at the dichroic M-edge of cobalt allows us to create and probe transient gratings of electronic and magnetic excitations in a CoGd alloy. In a demagnetized sample, we observe an electronic excitation with 50 fs rise time close to the FEL pulse duration and ~0.5 ps decay time within the range for the electron-phonon relaxation in metals. When the experiment is performed on a sample magnetized to saturation in an external field, we observe a magnetization grating, which appears on a sub-picosecond time scale as the sample is demagnetized at the maxima of the EUV intensity and then decays on the time scale of tens of picoseconds via thermal diffusion. The described approach opens prospects for studying dynamics of ultrafast magnetic phenomena on nanometer length scales.

Abstract

We use time-resolved x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (tr-XRMS) at the Co M$_{2,3}$- and Tb O$_1$-edges to study ultrafast demagnetization in an amorphous Co$_{88}$Tb$_{12}$ alloy with stripe domains. Combining the femtosecond temporal with nanometer spatial resolution of our experiment, we demonstrate that the equilibrium spin texture of the thin film remains unaltered by the optical pump-pulse on ultrashort timescales ($<$1 ps). However, after $\simeq$ 4 ps, we observe the onset of a significant domain wall broadening, which we attribute to a reduction of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the system, due to energy transfer to the lattice. Static temperature dependent magnetometry measurements combined with analytical modeling of the magnetic structure of the thin film corroborate this interpretation.

Abstract

The invention of optical lasers led to a revolution in the field of optics and even to the creation of completely new fields of research such as quantum optics. The reason was their unique statistical and coherence properties. The newly emerging, short-wavelength free-electron lasers (FELs) are sources of very bright coherent extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) and x-ray radiation with pulse durations on the order of femtoseconds, and are presently considered to be laser sources at these energies. Most existing FELs are highly spatially coherent but in spite of their name, they behave statistically as chaotic sources. Here, we demonstrate experimentally, by combining Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometry with spectral measurements that the seeded XUV FERMI FEL-2 source does indeed behave statistically as a laser. The first steps have been taken towards exploiting the first-order coherence of FELs, and the present work opens the way to quantum optics experiments that strongly rely on high-order statistical properties of the radiation., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, 37 references

Abstract

Experimental characterization of the structural, electronic and dynamic properties of dilute systems in aqueous solvents, such as nanoparticles, molecules and proteins, are nowadays an open challenge. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is probably one of the most established approaches to this aim as it is element-specific. However, typical dilute systems of interest are often composed of light elements that require extreme-ultraviolet to soft X-ray photons. In this spectral regime, water and other solvents are rather opaque, thus demanding radical reduction of the solvent volume and removal of the liquid to minimize background absorption. Here, we present an experimental endstation designed to operate a liquid flat jet of sub-micrometre thickness in a vacuum environment compatible with extreme ultraviolet/soft XAS measurements in transmission geometry. The apparatus developed can be easily connected to synchrotron and free-electron-laser user-facility beamlines dedicated to XAS experiments. The conditions for stable generation and control of the liquid flat jet are analyzed and discussed. Preliminary soft XAS measurements on some test solutions are shown.

Abstract

A one dimensional classically chaotic spin chain with asymmetric coupling and two different inter-spin interactions, nearest neighbors and all-to-all, has been considered. Depending on the interaction range, dynamical properties, as ergodicity and chaoticity are strongly different. Indeed, even in presence of chaoticity, the model displays a lack of ergodicity only in presence of all to all interaction and below an energy threshold, that persists in the thermodynamical limit. Abstract

Quantum Efficiency (QE) measurements of single photon photoemission from a Cu(111) single crystal and a Cu polycrystal photocathodes, irradiated by 150 fs-6.28 eV laser pulses, are reported over a broad range of incidence angle, both in s and p polarizations. The maximum QE (approx. = 4x10-4) for polycrystalline Cu is obtained in p polarization at an angle of incidence theta = 65 deg. We observe a QE enhancement in p polarization which can not be explained in terms of optical absorption, a phenomenon known as vectorial photoelectric effect. Issues concerning surface roughness and symmetry considerations are addressed. An explanation in terms of non local conductivity tensoris proposed.

Abstract

Four-wave mixing (FWM) processes, based on third-order nonlinear light-matter interactions, can combine ultrafast time resolution with energy and wavevector selectivity, and enable the exploration of dynamics inaccessible by linear methods (1-7). The coherent and multiwave nature of the FWM approach has been crucial in the development of advanced technologies, such as silicon photonics (8), subwavelength imaging (9) and quantum communications (10). All these technologies operate at optical wavelengths, which limits the spatial resolution and does not allow the probing of excitations with energy in the electron-volt range. Extension to shorter wavelengths--that is, the extreme ultraviolet and soft-X-ray ranges--would allow the spatial resolution to be improved and the excitation energy range to be expanded, as well as enabling elemental selectivity to be achieved by exploiting core resonances (5-7,11-14). So far, FWM applications at such wavelengths have been prevented by the absence of coherent sources of sufficient brightness and of suitable experimental set-ups. Here we show how transient gratings, generated by the interference of coherent extreme-ultraviolet pulses delivered by the FERMI free-electron laser (15), can be used to stimulate FWM processes at suboptical wavelengths. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the possibility of observing the time evolution of the FWM signal, which shows the dynamics of coherent excitations as molecular vibrations. This result opens the way to FWM with nanometre spatial resolution and elemental selectivity, which, for example, would enable the investigation of chargetransfer dynamics (5-7). The theoretical possibility of realizing these applications has already stimulated ongoing developments of free-electron lasers (16-20): our results show that FWM at suboptical wavelengths is feasible, and we hope that they will enable advances in present and future photon sources., In FWM, three coherent fields interact within the sample via the third-order susceptibility [χ.sup.(3)], which, unlike the second-order susceptibility, does not vanish by reason of the sample symmetry (1,2); FWM [...]

Abstract

We use femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses derived from a free electron laser to excite and probe surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on the (001) surface of single crystal SrTiO3. SAWs are generated by a pair of 39.9 nm pulses crossed at the sample with the crossing angle defining the SAW wavelength at 84 nm. Detection of SAWs is performed via diffraction of a time-delayed 13.3 nm probe pulse by SAW-induced surface ripples. Despite the low reflectivity of the sample in the extreme ultraviolet range, the reflection mode detection is found to be efficient because of an increase in the diffraction efficiency for shorter wavelengths. We describe a methodology for extracting the SAW attenuation in the presence of a thermal grating, which is based on measuring the decay of oscillations at twice the SAW frequency. The proposed approach can be used to study ultrahigh frequency SAWs in a broad range of materials and will bridge the wave vector gap in surface phonon spectroscopy between Brillouin scattering and He atom scattering.

We use femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses derived from a free electron laser to excite and probe surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on the (001) surface of single crystal SrTiO3. SAWs are generated by a pair of 39.9 nm pulses crossed at the sample with the crossing angle defining the SAW wavelength at 84 nm. Detection of SAWs is performed via diffraction of a time-delayed 13.3 nm probe pulse by SAW-induced surface ripples. Despite the low reflectivity of the sample in the extreme ultraviolet range, the reflection mode detection is found to be efficient because of an increase in the diffraction efficiency for shorter wavelengths. We describe a methodology for extracting the SAW attenuation in the presence of a thermal grating, which is based on measuring the decay of oscillations at twice the SAW frequency. The proposed approach can be used to study ultrahigh frequency SAWs in a broad range of materials and will bridge the wave vector gap in surface phonon spectroscopy between Brillouin scattering and He atom scattering.

Abstract

Time-resolved transient grating (TG) spectroscopy facilitates detailed studies of electron dynamics and transport phenomena by means of a periodic excitation of matter with coherent ultrashort light pulses. Several current and next generation free-electron laser (FEL) facilities provide fully coherent pulses with few femtosecond pulse durations and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon energies. Thus, they allow for transient grating experiments with periodicities as small as tens of nanometers and with element specific photon energies. Here, we demonstrate the element specificity of XUV TG (X-TG) experiments by tuning the photon energy across the Si L₂,₃-edge of Si₃N₄. We observe a shortening of the signal decay when increasing the XUV photon energy above the absorption edge. The analysis of the wavelength dependent signal shows that the faster decay is driven by the increase in the charge carrier density. Abstract

Lithium fluoride (LiF) films and crystals are versatile X-ray imaging detectors based on the optical reading of visible photoluminescence from radiation-induced electronic defects. Distinctive features of these detectors are their high spatial resolution across a large field of view, wide dynamic range and insensitivity to ambient light. These peculiarities of LiF detectors appear to be promising for monitoring the spatial intensity distribution of ultra-short, ultra-high pulses of the EUV-X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) and could be exploited for coherent diffraction imaging experiments.

Abstract

The vision to manipulate and control magnetism with light is driven on the one hand by fundamental questions of direct and indirect photon-spin interactions, and on the other hand by the necessity to cope with ever growing data volumes, requiring radically new approaches on how to write, read and process information. Here, we present two complementary experimental geometries to access the element-specific magnetization dynamics of complex magnetic systems via ultrafast magneto-optical spectroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range. First, we employ linearly polarized radiation of a free electron laser facility to demonstrate decoupled dynamics of the two sublattices of an FeGd alloy, a prerequisite for all-optical magnetization switching. Second, we use circularly polarized radiation generated in a laboratory-based high harmonic generation setup to show optical inter-site spin transfer in a CoPt alloy, a mechanism which only very recently has been predicted to mediate ultrafast metamagnetic phase transitions.

Abstract

Advances in developing ultrafast coherent sources operating at extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and x-ray wavelengths allow the extension of nonlinear optical techniques to shorter wavelengths. Here, we describe EUV transient grating spectroscopy, in which two crossed femtosecond EUV pulses produce spatially periodic nanoscale excitations in the sample and their dynamics is probed via diffraction of a third time-delayed EUV pulse. The use of radiation with wavelengths down to 13.3 nm allowed us to produce transient gratings with periods as short as 28 nm and observe thermal and coherent phonon dynamics in crystalline silicon and amorphous silicon nitride. This approach allows measurements of thermal transport on the ~10-nm scale, where the two samples show different heat transport regimes, and can be applied to study other phenomena showing nontrivial behaviors at the nanoscale, such as structural relaxations in complex liquids and ultrafast magnetic dynamics., United States. Abstract

We investigate the excitation of coherent acoustic and optical phonons by ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (EUV) pulses produced by a free electron laser. Two crossed femtosecond EUV (wavelength 12.7 nm) pulses are used to excite coherent phonons at a wavelength of 280 nm, which are detected via diffraction of an optical probe beam. Longitudinal and surface acoustic waves are measured in BK-7 glass, diamond, and Bi4Ge3O12; in the latter material, the excitation of a coherent optical phonon mode is also observed. We discuss probing different acoustic modes in reflection and transmission geometries and frequency mixing of surface and bulk acoustic waves in the signal. Abstract

The rapid development of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and x-ray ultrafast coherent light sources such as free electron lasers (FELs) has triggered the extension of wave-mixing techniques to short wavelengths. This class of experiments, based on the interaction of matter with multiple light pulses through the Nth order susceptibility, holds the promise of combining intrinsic ultrafast time resolution and background-free signal detection with nanometer spatial resolution and chemical specificity. A successful approach in this direction has been the combination of the unique characteristics of the seeded FEL FERMI with dedicated four-wave-mixing (FWM) setups, which leads to the demonstration of EUV-based transient grating (TG) spectroscopy. In this perspective paper, we discuss how the TG approach can be extended toward more general FWM spectroscopies by exploring the intrinsic multiparameter nature of nonlinear processes, which derives from the ability of controlling the properties of each field independently.

Abstract

The use of lasers to generate acoustic waves revolutionized the field of ultrasound and enabled numerous key developments in both fundamental research and applications. In the past decade, remarkable progress has been achieved in developing coherent sources of radiation operating in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and x-ray ranges, such as free electron lasers, which already yielded many breakthroughs in different fields of science. We expect that the field of ultrasonics will also greatly benefit from the availability of coherent EUV and x-ray sources. So far, a number of studies explored the use of coherent EUV and x-ray radiation for detection of acoustic waves. In this report, we describe the first experiment on the generation of surface and bulk acoustic waves in the tens of GHz range by EUV light.

Abstract

International audience; Thin film magnetization reversal without applying external fields is an attractive perspective for applications in sensors and devices. One way to accomplish it is by fine-tuning the microstructure of a magnetic substrate via temperature control, as in the case of a thin Fe layer deposited on a MnAs/GaAs(001) template. This work reports a time-resolved resonant scattering study exploring the magnetic and structural properties of the Fe/MnAs system, using a 100 fs optical laser pulse to trigger local temperature variations and a 100 fs x-ray free-electron laser pulse to probe the induced magnetic and structural dynamics. The experiment provides direct evidence that a single optical laser pulse can reverse the Fe magnetization locally. It reveals that the time scale of the magnetization reversal is slower than that of the MnAs structural transformations triggered by the optical pulse, which take place after a few picoseconds already.
