1. Diversity of lakes and ponds in the forest-tundra ecozone: from limnicity to limnodiversity

Abstract

Arctic and subarctic landscapes have unique hydrological and limnological features and are now experiencing rapid change due to climate warming and permafrost thaw. The highly abundant lakes, ponds, and rivers across these landscapes play an increasingly important role in global biogeochemical cycles and are sentinels of environmental changes. However, studying these remote waters poses challenges for both in situ sampling and remote-sensing analysis. Here we developed a synergistic remote-sensing strategy that combined PlanetScope and Sentinel-2 satellite data to estimate limnicity (water fraction per land surface), limnodensity (density of water bodies), and limnodiversity (optical diversity of water bodies) along a boreal forest-tundra transect, from the non-permafrost to the continuous permafrost zones of western Nunavik (Subarctic Canada). Our analyses show that this region hosts 335,281 water bodies, around 90% in the 0.0001 to 0.01 km2 size range. In bedrock outcrops, large water bodies were mostly associated with glacially carved depressions (higher limnicity). In contrast, small water bodies were predominately found in sedimentary infills along valleys (higher limnodensity). The discontinuous permafrost zone had the highest limnodensity and limnodiversity. This was likely due to permafrost thaw (thermokarst), particularly the collapse, subsidence, and erosion of palsas (organic permafrost mounds), resulting in ponds with black- and brown-colored waters, and lithalsas (mineral permafrost mounds), resulting in ponds with brown, light-brown, and sometimes white-colored waters. Abstract

Ota, a key part of the Chalcolithic walled enclosure phenomenon in Portuguese Estremadura, represents a unique settlement strategy within the actual territory of Portugal. The architecture and social dynamics of this site remained largely unexplored until 2019. This study marks a significant shift in its study, utilizing a synergistic approach of archaeology and geotechnologies, embodied in the using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle equipped with LiDAR. This innovative combination successfully penetrated the dense vegetation, revealing 21 previously unknown archaeological features. The results from the fieldwork unveiled a novel type of walled enclosure at Ota, characterized by a series of four embankments. This discovery prompts a re-evaluation of the roles and practices of 3rd millennium BC communities in Portuguese Estremadura. Furthermore, the proven efficacy of this methodology paves the way for its application in similar archaeological contexts. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the recent fieldwork, integrating interpretations from LiDAR data, material studies and 14C dating.

3. Pulmonary biological glue embolism after endoscopic repair of gastric varices – A case report

Abstract

Cyanoacrylate injection is widely used to treat hemorrhagic gastric varices. A pulmonary glue embolism is an unusual but potentially fatal complication. We present a case of a 51-year-old man with a history of alcoholic hepatic cirrhosis Child-Pugh B, who had an acute pulmonary embolism with sudden cardiorespiratory collapse due to biological glue injection used for the emergent repair of bleeding gastric varices. After the restoration of respiratory and hemodynamic parameters, he was admitted to the intensive care unit and the pulmonary biological glue emboli were documented with computed tomography scan. A high index of suspicion for this entity is essential in patients submitted to endoscopic sclerotherapy. Some might be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, while others might present with cardiorespiratory collapse.

5. Evidence of Surface Rupture Associated With Historical Earthquakes in the Lower Tagus Valley, Portugal. Implications for Seismic Hazard in the Greater Lisbon Area

Abstract

The Lower Tagus Valley Fault, Portugal, has long been associated with the damaging earthquakes that affected the Greater Lisbon Area in historical times. These include a poorly documented earthquake that occurred in 1344, the relatively well-documented 1531 earthquake, and the most recent M6.0 1909 earthquake. In this work, we use a 0.5 m resolution LiDAR-based digital elevation model and a 0.5 cm resolution digital surface model based on UAV photogrammetry to accurately locate the fault scarps in the northernmost portion of the western fault strand and to select sites to perform paleoseimolological investigations. The paleoseismological and geochronological analysis performed in the Alviela trench site document the fault activity in the last 3000 years, including two earthquakes during historical times. We performed ground motion scenarios for 20 km, 40 km, and 60 km ruptures including the trench site. The ground motion fields obtained for the 40 km and 60 km ruptures are in agreement with most macroseismic intensity data available for the 1531 earthquake, implying a magnitude in the range M6.8–7.4. However, the degree of deformation preserved in the trench suggests a value closer to the lower magnitude bound. The intensity level observed in Lisbon in 1531 (IX) is lower than the modeled intensities for all considered scenarios and could be related to a particularly high level of vulnerability of the building stock.

6. UAVs for Science in Antarctica

Abstract

Remote sensing is a very powerful tool that has been used to identify, map and monitor Antarctic features and processes for nearly one century. Satellite remote sensing plays the main role for about the last five decades, as it is the only way to provide multitemporal views at continental scale. But the emergence of small consumer-grade unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the past two decades has paved the way for data in unprecedented detail. This has been also verified by an increasing noticeable interest in Antarctica by the incorporation of UAVs in the field activities in diversified research topics. This paper presents a comprehensive review about the use of UAVs in scientific activities in Antarctica. It is based on the analysis of 190 scientific publications published in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of conferences which are organised into six main application topics: Terrestrial, Ice and Snow, Fauna, Technology, Atmosphere and Others. The analysis encompasses a detailed overview of the activities, identifying advantages and difficulties, also evaluating future possibilities and challenges for expanding the use of UAV in the field activities. The relevance of using UAVs to support numerous and diverse scientific activities in Antarctica becomes very clear after analysing this set of scientific publications, as it is revolutionising the remote acquisition of new data with much higher detail, from inaccessible or difficult to access regions, in faster and cheaper ways. Many of the advances can be seen in the terrestrial areas (detailed 3D mapping; vegetation mapping, discrimination and health assessment; periglacial forms characterisation), ice and snow (more detailed topography, depth and features of ice-sheets, glaciers and sea-ice), fauna (counting penguins, seals and flying birds and detailed morphometrics) and in atmosphere studies (more detailed meteorological measurements and air-surface couplings). This review has also shown that despite the low environmental impact of UAV-based surveys, the increasing number of applications and use, may lead to impacts in the most sensitive Antarctic ecosystems. Hence, we call for an internationally coordinated effort to for planning and sharing UAV data in Antarctica, which would reduce environmental impacts, while extending research outcomes.

Abstract Background and objectives Currently there is no agreement regarding which one is the most adequate anesthetic technique for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. Peribulbar block may reduce the incidence of oculocardiac reflex and postoperative apnea. The goal of this study was to report the outcomes of peribulbar block, when combined with general anesthesia, for the laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity, in premature babies. Methods A retrospective analysis of anesthetic records of all babies who underwent laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity from January 2008 through December 2015 in a tertiary hospital was performed. Results During that period a total of six babies was submitted to laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity, all under peribulbar block combined with general anesthesia. A single infratemporal injection of 0.15 mL.kg−1 per eye ropivacaine 1% or 0.75% was performed. At the end of the procedure, all babies resumed spontaneous ventilation. No perioperative complications were reported. Conclusions Peribulbar block was a safe anesthetic technique in our sample considered.

8. Assessment of the Influence of Survey Design and Processing Choices on the Accuracy of Tree Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) Measurements Using UAV-Based Photogrammetry

Abstract

This work provides a systematic evaluation of how survey design and computer processing choices (such as the software used or the workflow/parameters chosen) influence unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based photogrammetry retrieval of tree diameter at breast height (DBH), an important 3D structural parameter in forest inventory and biomass estimation. The study areas were an agricultural field located in the province of Málaga, Spain, where a small group of olive trees was chosen for the UAV surveys, and an open woodland area in the outskirts of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, where a 10 ha area grove, composed mainly of birch trees, was overflown. A DJI Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter UAV was used for the image acquisition. We applied structure from motion (SfM) to generate 3D point clouds of individual trees, using Agisoft and Pix4D software packages. The estimation of DBH in the point clouds was made using a RANSAC-based circle fitting tool from the TreeLS R package. All trees modeled had their DBH tape-measured on the ground for accuracy assessment. In the first study site, we executed many diversely designed flights, to identify which parameters (flying altitude, camera tilt, and processing method) gave us the most accurate DBH estimations; then, the resulting best settings configuration was used to assess the replicability of the method in the forested area in Bulgaria. The best configuration tested (flight altitudes of about 25 m above tree canopies, camera tilt 60°, forward and side overlaps of 90%, Agisoft ultrahigh processing) resulted in root mean square errors (RMSEs; %) of below 5% of the tree diameters in the first site and below 12.5% in the forested area. We demonstrate that, when carefully designed methodologies are used, SfM can measure the DBH of single trees with very good accuracy, and to our knowledge, the results presented here are the best achieved so far using (above-canopy) UAV-based photogrammetry.

9. Detection and Delineation of Sorted Stone Circles in Antarctica

Abstract

Sorted stone circles are natural surface patterns formed in periglacial environments. Their relation to permafrost conditions make them very helpful for better understanding the past climates where they were formed and have evolved and also for monitoring current underlying processes in case circles are active. These metric scale patterns that occur in clusters of tens to thousands of circular elements, can be more comprehensively characterized if automated methods are used. This paper addresses their identification and delineation through the development and testing of a set of automated approaches, namely, template matching, sliding band filter, and dynamic programming. All of these methods take advantage of the 3D shape of the structures conveyed by digital elevation models (DEM), built from ultra-high resolution imagery captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) surveys developed in Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica (62°S). The best detection results achieve scores above 85%, while the delineations are performed with errors as low as 7%.

Abstract

The presence of water ice on Mars is well established. Some featureson the planet point to the occurrence of processes similar to those that take place in periglacial areas of Earth. One of the clues for this is the existence of small-scale polygonal terrains. In this paper, we present a methodology that aims at the automated identification of polygonal patterns on high-spatial resolution images of the surface of Mars. In the context of the research project TERPOLI, this step will be complemented with a full characterization, in both geometric and topological terms, of thenetworks detected. In this manner, we hope to collect data that will lead to a better understanding of the conditions of formation of the polygons, and of their temporal evolution; namely, we intend to identify different groups of polygons and to compare them with terrestrial examples.

Abstract

Background: Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in otherwise healthy neonates frequently requires urgent surgical procedure but anaesthesia care may result in respiratory complications, such as hypoxaemia, pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents, and postoperative apnoea. The primary aim was to study whether or not the incidence of difficult airway management and of hypoxaemia in neonates undergoing pyloric stenosis repair was higher than that in neonates undergoing other surgeries. Methods: Data on neonates and infants undergoing anaesthesia and surgery for pyloric stenosis were extracted from the NEonate and Children audiT of Anesthesia pRactice In Europe (NECTARINE) database, for secondary analysis. Results: We identified 310 infants who had anaesthesia for surgery for pyloric stenosis. Difficult airway management (more than two attempts at laryngoscopy) was higher in children with pyloric stenosis when compared with the entire NECTARINE cohort (7.9% [95% confidence interval {CI}, 5.22–11.53] vs 4.4% [95% CI, 1.99–6.58]; relative risk [RR]=1.81 [95% CI, 1.21–2.69]; P=0.004), whereas transient hypoxaemia with oxygen saturation

Abstract

Trabalho apresentado em Conferência Internacional de Gestão, Turismo e Tecnologias de 2023 (ICMTT’23), 4-6 maio 2023, Bogotá, Colômbia. Urban food markets are considered as catalyzers of regional development and central places for promoting sustainability through the short cycles between the farm and the plate. This paper aims to identify mechanisms for improving the performance of an urban food market, con- sidering an extended internal and external analysis. This includes competitive pressure and op- portunities and their specific constraints on maximizing its relations with the region's inhabitants and simultaneously promoting the local economy and sustainable behaviors and policies in the community. This is a case study carried out using a qualitative approach with different key play- ers from one of the most important fish markets in the world – Mercado do Livramento in Setúbal (Portugal). The conclusions reinforce the need to preserve its authenticity, through the attraction, satisfaction, and improvement of loyalty rates of local customers, while also reaching a different public and increasing its regional, national, and international attractiveness. To a large extent, this action will involve investing in improving the value proposition of merchants and promoting exclusive experiences, focused on products and people, which is in line with the goals of sustain- able development. Trabalho apresentado em Conferência Internacional de Gestão, Turismo e Tecnologias de 2023 (ICMTT’23), 4 a 6 de maio 2023, Bogotá, Colômbia O objetivo do estudo é definir o perfil de competências ideal dos comerciantes no contexto dos mercados municipais de produtos frescos e avaliar o seu nível de proficiência nas competências. Realizou-se um estudo de caso no Mercado do Livramento de Setúbal (Portugal), assente numa abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa através da realização de focus group e de inquéritos por questionário. Os resultados identificaram um perfil constituído por 11 competências-chave. Conclui-se que os comerciantes representam bem o perfil ideal definido, possuindo níveis de proficiência positivos nas competências requeridas para a sua atividade profissional. Este estudo contribui para a elaboração de sistemas de trabalho assentes no desenvolvimento de competências que permitam melhorar a proficiência e o desempenho dos comerciantes, com implicações na sustentabilidade dos Mercados de produtos frescos e das respetivas regiões pela sua importância na dinamização da economia local. É um estudo pioneiro em contexto nacional e internacional, apresentando uma natureza prática e colaborativa com uma vertente de cocriação. The purpose of the study is to define the ideal competences profile of traders’ municipal markets of fresh products and assess their level of proficiency. A case study was used in the Livramento Market of Setubal (Portugal), based on a qualitative and quantitative approach through focus groups and surveys. The results identified a competency profile with 11 key competencies. The traders represent the ideal profile defined, having in global terms positive levels of proficiency in the competencies required for the development of their professional activity. This study contributes to the elaboration of work systems with a focus on the competences development that allow improving the proficiency and performance of traders, with implications for the sustainability of the Markets and the regions due to their importance in stimulating the local economy. It’s a pioneering study in a national and international context, with an eminently practical and collaborative nature, based on a co-creation. N/A

28. Adoption of GDPR for Personal Data Protection in Smart Cities

Abstract

The digital infrastructure of smart cities necessarily implies collecting big amounts of personal and its subsequent processing by software and applications designed to acquire analytical capabilities regarded to public spaces in order to enable efficient control over it. In the European Union legal context, aiming to densify the principle of informational self-determination, the general data protection regulation (GDPR) has provided citizens with greater power and control over their personal data, turning the responsibilities of smart cities administrators towards citizens much heavier. This chapter aims to analyse the impact on personal data and democratic public spaces derived from smart cities activities, to present the rights granted to individuals by the GDPR and its applicability to smart cities, and to make some recommendations regarding the implementation and the adaptation of the Regulation to the specific case of a smart city, not only to preserve a high-level level of privacy protection but also as a means to promote democratic solutions in public spaces.

Abstract

International audience; Genomic selection is a promising approach for reducing the length of the selection cycle in forest tree breeding. Its efficiency must be evaluated across generations for this purpose, but such studies have been performed for multi-generational breeding programmes in only a few forest tree species to date. We analysed a subset of the Eucalyptus globulus breeding population from the Portuguese company Altri Florestal. In total, 412 genotypes from three successive breeding generations were genotyped with 14,716 SNP markers. A comparison of pedigree-based and marker-based relationship coefficients allowed to correct several documented pedigree errors. Deregressed breeding values were estimated from phenotypic records for growth traits (height and diameter) and survival for 31 field trials distributed in one breeding zone in Portugal and used as pseudo-phenotypes for genomic prediction models. Accuracy was assessed by cross-validation according to two main scenarios: (i) a scenario based on a five random fold number, not taking generation into account, and (ii) scenarios investigating progeny validation using parental generations to predict the progenies. Accuracy was highest after pedigree correction and ranged from 0.46 to 0.60 for the first scenario, from - 0.56 to 0.72 for parent/progeny scenarios and from 0.33 to 0.79 when progenies were added to the calibration population. This genomic selection study provides promising insight for the Altri Florestal Eucalyptus breeding programme.
