Las instituciones educativas llevan a cabo un papel relevante para la asignación de valor en las organizaciones a través de la formación de profesionistas, futuros emprendedores y colaboradores. Se presenta una investigación con estudiantes de nivel superior quienes tienen habilidades digitales y en general una actitud favorable hacia ellas. Sin embargo, se observan dificultades en el desarrollo de competencias digitales requeridas en tareas académicas. Se estudió el constructo Autoeficacia de la teoría cognitivo social como factor que afecta la relación de las Actitudes hacia las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC) y el desarrollo de Competencias Digitales en jóvenes de diversos programas educativos e instituciones de nivel superior. Se aplicó una metodología preponderantemente cuantitativa con diseño no experimental y alcance de correlación que incluyó escalas Likert para recoger información. Los resultados mostraron correlaciones positivas de fuertes a medias en todas las relaciones; y medias de las variables superiores al valor medio de las escalas. Lo anterior tendrá implicaciones hacia la implementación de estrategias didácticas mejor enfocadas para lograr aprendizajes que favorezcan las competencias exigidas a los profesionistas en el complejo mundo globalizado.

Obesity incidence is increasing worldwide with the urgent need to identify new therapeutics. Sex differences in immune cell activation drive obesity-mediated pathologies where males are more susceptible to obesity comorbidities and exacerbated inflammation. Here, we demonstrate that the macrophage-secreted protein RELMα critically protects females against high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. Compared to male mice, serum RELMα levels were higher in both control and HFD-fed females and correlated with frequency of adipose macrophages and eosinophils. RELMα-deficient females gained more weight and had proinflammatory macrophage accumulation and eosinophil loss in the adipose stromal vascular fraction (SVF), while RELMα treatment or eosinophil transfer rescued this phenotype. Single-cell RNA-sequencing of the adipose SVF was performed and identified sex and RELMα-dependent changes. Genes involved in oxygen sensing and iron homeostasis, including hemoglobin and lncRNA Gm47283/Gm21887, correlated with increased obesity, while eosinophil chemotaxis and response to amyloid-beta were protective. Monocyte-to-macrophage transition was also dysregulated in RELMα-deficient animals. Collectively, these studies implicate a RELMα–macrophage–eosinophil axis in sex-specific protection against obesity and uncover new therapeutic targets for obesity.

Background and aims – Seasonality exerts strong controlling forces on species diversity in herbaceous species communities, however, this control process remains poorly understood in tropical lithologically different rocky outcrops. We aim to investigate the effect of seasonality and the variability of soil properties on changes in the herbaceous species richness and species composition of two different herbaceous species communities on rocky outcrops in Brazil. We hypothesize that seasonality, determined by variation in precipitation, and soil fertility, determined by variability in nutrient-related soil properties, drives species diversity (i.e., richness and beta diversity) patterns of herbaceous communities at local scale.Methods – To investigate how the variation between dry and wet seasons affects species richness and beta diversity, we studied plots on rocky outcrops of Iron Quadrangle (40 plots, 1 × 1 m) and Carajás (20 plots, 1 × 1 m). Key results – We observed similar richness patterns between seasons, without significant differences between sites, using rarefaction and extrapolation curves. However, we observed significant differences in beta diversity between seasons. Our results indicate that seasonality determines the temporal variation of the herbaceous species composition, but not species richness. Likewise, our tested models indicated that seasonality shape beta diversity in the studied rocky outcrops. Conclusions – The predictable seasonal precipitation is closely related to the community composition on this type of rocky outcrop formation, where there typically is a marked seasonal water deficit pattern, with increased deficit during the dry season. We presume that seasonality is an important driver in determining plant community assembly at local scale on the studied rocky outcrops.

El comportamiento de la distribución de solutos en las secciones transversales de los flujos naturales es un tema de gran importancia para las ciencias y técnicas del campo de la ingeniería ambiental, sanitaria y civil. Los agudos problemas de la contemporaneidad que presionan fuertemente sobre el recurso hidráulico, demandan cada vez más una comprensión profunda de los fenómenos que definen el curso e impacto de las contaminaciones hídricas, principalmente. Dada la gran actualidad del tema, se han desarrollado numerosos métodos y fórmulas para determinar la llamada “Longitud de mezcla”, distancia a la cual se considera que la sustancia en estudio se ha disuelto de forma uniforme en la sección transversal del fluido. Sin embargo, la gran mayoría de estas ecuaciones son de naturaleza empírica o se soportan sobre conjeturas no completamente demostradas. Por esa razón, en este artículo se presenta una aproximación racional al tema del “grado de mezcla” y se obtienen ecuaciones prácticas para su aplicación en casos reales. Estas ecuaciones tienen un amplio alcance, pues permiten estimar la pendiente del cauce sin acudir a la observación subjetiva que de manera ordinaria se hace aplicando Manning. Al final se discute en detalle la aplicación de trazador salino a un pequeño cauce de montaña en Colombia, interpretado por las nuevas relaciones. Por último se presentan conclusiones y recomendaciones.

Abstract Key message We provide data on seedlot germination potential—a key trait related to regeneration—of 12 oak species. Germination was tested at the University of Granada following international protocols with 8985 acorns from 93 batches and 16 countries across Europe. BackgroundRespiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cause of bronchiolitis in children under the age of five. RSV infection proceeds by fusion of the viral envelope with the target cell membrane, but it is unclear whether fusion occurs with plasma or endosomal membranes.MethodsEntry and/or infection was studied in undifferentiated primary cultures of human bronchial epithelial cells. Synchronization of viral entry or infection was achieved by attaching the virus to the plasma membrane at temperatures of 4°C or 22°C. Cells in which entry events had occurred were identified by the enzymatic action of beta-lactamase M (BlaM) fused to the RSV P protein (BlaM-P) carried by rgRSV virions. BlaM cleaves the beta-lactam ring of CCF2 loaded into the cells, disrupting FRET and allowing blue light to be emitted. Green fluorescent protein (GFP) expression, encoded by the rgRSV genome, was used to identify infected cells.ResultsWe found that adsorption of RSV at 4°C favors entry via endocytosis, whereas binding of the virus to the membrane at 22°C favors RSV entry via the plasma membrane. The induction of endocytosis by synchronization at 4°C is, therefore, an artifact. In addition, we found that all drugs that interfered with RSV infection reduced cell membrane deformations such as filopodia and lamellipodia, suggesting a mechanism by which they may interfere with RSV fusion with the cell membrane.DiscussionIn conclusion, RSV enters the cell by direct fusion of its envelope with the plasma membrane.

Abstract Aims Acute mitral regurgitation (MR) in the setting of myocardial infarction (MI) may be the result of papillary muscle rupture (PMR). This condition is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We aim to evaluate the feasibility of transcatheter edge‐to‐edge mitral valve repair (TEER) in this acute setting. Methods and results We analysed data from the International Registry of MitraClip in Acute Mitral Regurgitation following acute Myocardial Infarction (IREMMI) of 30 centres in Europe, North America, and the middle east. We included patients with post‐MI PMR treated with TEER as a salvage procedure, and we evaluated immediate and 30‐day outcomes. Twenty‐three patients were included in this analysis (9 patients suffered complete papillary muscle rupture, 9 partial and 5 chordal rupture). The patients' mean age was 68 ± 14 years. Patients were at high surgical risk with median EuroSCORE II 27% (IQR 16, 28) and 20 out of 23 (87% were in cardiogenic shock). All patients were treated with vasopressors, and 17 out of 23 patients required mechanical support. TEER procedure was performed on the median 6 days after the index MI date IQR (3, 11). Procedural success was achieved in 87% of patients. The grade of MR was significantly decreased after the procedure. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has undergone rapid expansion, emerging as a viable therapeutic option for low-risk patients in lieu of surgical aortic valve replacement. This paper aims to provide a review of the scientific evidence concerning TAVR in low-risk patients, encompassing both observational and clinical trial data. Furthermore, a substantial proportion of low-risk patients possesses a bicuspid aortic valve, necessitating careful examination of the pertinent anatomic and clinical considerations to TAVR that is highlighted in this review. Additionally, the review expands upon some of the unique challenges associated with alternate access in low-risk patients evaluated for TAVR. Last, this review outlines the pivotal role of a multidisciplinary heart team approach in the execution of all TAVR procedures and the authors’ vision of ‘minimalist TAVR’ as a new era in low-risk TAVR.

The small GTPase Rac1 (Ras‐related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1) has been implicated in cancer progression and in the poor prognosis of various types of tumors. Rac1 SUMOylation occurs during epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT), and it is required for tumor cell migration and invasion. Here we identify POTEE (POTE Ankyrin domain family member E) as a novel Rac1‐SUMO1 effector involved in breast cancer malignancy that controls invadopodium formation through the activation of Rac1‐SUMO1. POTEE activates Rac1 in the invadopodium by recruiting TRIO‐GEF (triple functional domain protein), and it induces tumor cell proliferation and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. We found that the co‐localization of POTEE with Rac1 is correlated with more aggressive breast cancer subtypes. Given its role in tumor dissemination, the leading cause of cancer‐related deaths, POTEE could represent a potential therapeutic target for these types of cancer.

Multidisciplinary strategies have transformed the management of advanced ovarian cancer. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of paclitaxel in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) following surgical cytoreduction for ovarian peritoneal metastases in a randomized phase III trial conducted between August 2012 and December 2019. Seventy-six patients were randomized to either the HIPEC or no HIPEC group. Although median values for the primary endpoints (recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS)) revealed superior outcomes for the HIPEC (RFS: 23 months, OS: 48 months) over the control group (RFS: 19 months, OS: 46 months), these differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.22 and p = 0.579). Notably, the HIPEC group demonstrated significantly higher 5-year OS and 3-year RFS rates (47.2% and 47.5%) compared to patients without HIPEC (34.5% and 21.3%). Stratification according to Peritoneal Surface Disease Severity Score (PSDSS) showed improved OS and RFS for patients with lower PSDSS (I–II) in the HIPEC-treated group (p = 0.033 and p = 0.042, respectively). The Clavien–Dindo classification of adverse event grades revealed no significant differences between HIPEC and controls (p = 0.482). While overall results were not statistically significant, our long-term follow-up emphasized the potential benefit of HIPEC-associated cytoreduction with paclitaxel, particularly in selected ovarian cancer patients with lower PSDSS indices.

The use of foam materials in environments where they come into contact with individuals often results in deterioration, necessitating periodic replacements to maintain safety and hygiene standards. Foam, a lightweight, porous plastic formed by aggregated bubbles, possesses excellent impact-absorbing properties; however, its inherent porosity and susceptibility to wear present challenges. This project aims to develop a technological application for repurposing spent polyurethane (PU) foam from leisure facilities into effective impact absorption systems. By focusing on the reuse of deteriorated foam materials, this initiative seeks to minimize environmental impact while leveraging their beneficial technical characteristics. Addressing issues related to foam degradation, this project endeavors to create sustainable solutions by reintegrating spent foam into new systems. This innovative approach promotes sustainability while enhancing safety through the provision of high-quality, impact-resistant elements. Ultimately, this work aims to contribute to environmental conservation and the advancement of effective impact protection measures in leisure facilities.

Abstract The aim of this systematic review was to answer the following question: “Does alendronate, a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, improve or impair alveolar socket healing after tooth extraction in animal models”? To this end, a systematic review of the literature was carried out in PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, Web of Science, as well as in the gray literature up to May 2023. Preclinical studies that evaluated alveolar healing after tooth extraction and the intake of sodium alendronate compared with placebo were included. Two investigators were responsible for screening the articles independently, extracting the data, and assessing their quality through the SYRCLE’s RoB tool for randomized trials in animal studies. The study selection process, study characteristics, risk of bias in studies, impact of alendronate on bone healing, and certainty of evidence were described in text and table formats. Methodological differences among the studies were restricted to the synthesis methods. The synthesis of qualitative results followed the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis (SWiM) reporting guideline. From the 19 included studies, five were considered to have low risk, three were of unclear risk, and eleven presented a high risk of bias. The studies were considered heterogeneous regarding alendronate posology, including its dosage and route of administration. Furthermore, a variety of animal species, different age ranges, diverse teeth extracted, and exposure or not to ovariectomy contributed to the lack of parity of the selected studies. Our results indicated that alendronate monotherapy negatively affects the early phase of wound healing after tooth extraction in preclinical studies, suggesting that the bone resorption process after tooth extraction in animals treated with alendronate might impair the bone healing process of the extraction socket. In conclusion, alendronate administration restrains bone resorption, thereby delaying alveolar socket healing . Future studies should be conducted to validate these findings and to better understand the effects of alendronate therapy on oral tissues.

The World Health Organization (WHO) was born as a normative agency and has looked to global health law to structure collective action to realize global health with justice. Framed by its constitutional authority to act as the directing and coordinating authority on international health, WHO has long been seen as the central actor in the development and implementation of global health law. However, WHO has faced challenges in advancing law to prevent disease and promote health over the past 75 years, with global health law constrained by new health actors, shifting normative frameworks, and soft law diplomacy. These challenges were exacerbated amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as states neglected international legal commitments in national health responses. Yet, global health law reforms are now underway to strengthen WHO governance, signaling a return to lawmaking for global health. Looking back on WHO's 75th anniversary, this article examines the central importance of global health law under WHO governance, reviewing the past successes, missed opportunities, and future hopes for WHO. For WHO to meet its constitutional authority to become the normative agency it was born to be, we offer five proposals to reestablish a WHO fit for purpose: normative instruments, equity and human rights mainstreaming, sustainable financing, One Health, and good governance. Drawing from past struggles, these reforms will require further efforts to revitalize hard law authorities in global health, strengthen WHO leadership across the global governance landscape, uphold equity and rights at the center of global health law, and expand negotiations in global health diplomacy.

The treatment of snakebite envenoming is currently suboptimal. Existing antivenoms often lack efficacy and may cause adverse reactions. Here, the authors derive, develop, and demonstrate the utility of toxin-specific broadly-neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies with established reactivity across related venom toxins from different snake species and show efficacy in rodent models.

The combination of safety belts and rollover protective structures (ROPSs) is key in improving the safety of agricultural tractors in the event of rollover. However, we also have the opportunity to enhance the security provided by each ROPS; one such example is the combination of this safety device with adequate mechanical energy absorbers (MEAs). Inexpensive disc-shaped MEAs can be included in the anchoring points of a ROPS onto the chassis of a tractor. Three configurations of ROPS combined with MEAs were tested during the application of loads that simulated the effects of side rollover in the vehicle. The tested configurations included a blank MEA as a reference case alongside a single MEA and a stack assembly containing both elements. The results of the tests show that both the deformation of the ROPS itself and the strain energy are larger in the case of blank MEAs; thus, there is also a risk that the clearance zone will be infringed upon and that the protective structure will collapse. We can conclude that the implementation of an appropriate MEA in ROPS reduces the deformation of the ROPS itself and its strain energy in cases of vehicle rollover; hence, the safety provided by such protection systems may be improved at a low cost.

Conservation and restoration of hedgerows promote biodiversity and multi-functionality in agricultural landscapes. However, in Mediterranean environments, natural regeneration of hedgerows is often poor, and factors hindering the establishment and growth of hedgerow woody species remain unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by (1) quantifying natural regeneration, including seedling establishment and resprouting of planted hedgerow species and the establishment of woody species coming from outside the hedgerows; and (2) experimentally assessing the impact of drought, herbivory, and herb competition on seedling establishment. We selected 12 planted, 11–13-year-old hedgerows in four sites in Central Spain to sample their natural regeneration. In addition, we transplanted 1,356 seedlings of Colutea arborescens L., Crataegus monogyna Jacq. and Rhamnus alaternus L. to two field sites under three treatments that were applied factorially for two years: irrigation to alleviate summer drought, protection against herbivory, and herb clipping to reduce competition with transplanted seedlings. We found that only 66 juveniles of woody species, including 29 of species that were not planted in the hedgerows, developed from seed germination, and 316 sprouts recruited spontaneously along 10 years (14 individuals ha−1 year−1). Of the transplanted seedlings, only 22% survived after two years with protection against herbivory strongly enhancing seedling survival. To a lesser extent, irrigation and herb competition affected survival through interactions with herbivory and species identity. Irrigation and protection against herbivores accelerated seedling growth. Survival and growth of C. arborescens (14%; seedling height = 12 ± 9 cm) were lower than those of C. monogyna (41%; 21 ± 11 cm) and R. alaternus (17%; 13 ± 8 cm). We conclude that natural regeneration in Mediterranean planted hedgerows is low, herbivory is the main limiting factor for seedling survival, especially for deciduous species, and summer drought and herb competition mostly limit growth. These findings have important implications for the conservation and restoration of hedgerows in Mediterranean environments.

Abstract Background and Aims Cerebral embolic protection (CEP) devices are employed to capture embolic debris and reduce the risk of stroke during transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Evidence is mixed regarding the safety and efficacy of CEP. We aimed to summarize the safety and effectiveness of CEP use during TAVR. Methods Electronic databases, including PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Embase, were searched using relevant search terms for articles relating to CEP. All relevant data from 20 studies were extracted into a standardized form. Statistical analyses were performed using Revman 5.4. Odds ratio (OR) or mean differences (MDs) were used to estimate the desired outcome with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results Twenty studies (eight randomized controlled trials [RCTs]) involving 210,871 patients (19,261 in the CEP group and 191,610 in TAVR without the CEP group) were included. The use of CEP was associated with a lower odds of 30‐day mortality by 39% (OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.53–0.70) and stroke by 31% (OR: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.52–0.92). Comparing devices, benefit in terms of mortality and stroke was observed with the use of the Sentinel device (Boston Scientific), but not among other devices. No differences were observed in the outcomes of acute kidney injury, major or life‐threatening bleeding events, or major vascular complications between groups. When only RCTs were included, there were no observed differences in the primary or secondary outcomes for CEP versus no CEP use during TAVR. Conclusions The totality of evidence suggests a net benefit for the use of CEP, weighted by studies in which the Sentinal device was used. However, given the RCT subanalysis, additional evidence is needed to identify patients at the highest risk of stroke for optimal decision‐making.

Abstract Background The French PRODIGE 7 trial, published on January 2021, has raised doubts about the specific survival benefit provided by HIPEC with oxaliplatin 460 mg/m2 (30 minutes) for the treatment of peritoneal metastases from colorectal cancer. However, several methodological flaws have been identified in PRODIGE 7, specially the HIPEC protocol or the choice of overall survival as the main endpoint, so its results have not been assumed as definitive, emphasizing the need for further research on HIPEC. It seems that the HIPEC protocol with high-dose mytomicin-C (35 mg/m2) is the preferred regime to evaluate in future clinical studies. Methods GECOP-MMC is a prospective, open-label, randomized, multicenter phase IV clinical trial that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of HIPEC with high-dose mytomicin-C in preventing the development of peritoneal recurrence in patients with limited peritoneal metastasis from colon cancer (not rectal), after complete surgical cytoreduction. This study will be performed in 31 Spanish HIPEC centres, starting in March 2022. Additional international recruiting centres are under consideration. Two hundred sixteen patients with PCI ≤ 20, in which complete cytoreduction (CCS 0) has been obtained, will be randomized intraoperatively to arm 1 (with HIPEC) or arm 2 (without HIPEC). We will stratified randomization by surgical PCI (1–10; 11–15; 16–20). Patients in both arms will be treated with personalized systemic chemotherapy. Primary endpoint is peritoneal recurrence-free survival at 3 years. An ancillary study will evaluate the correlation between surgical and pathological PCI, comparing their respective prognostic values. Discussion HIPEC with high-dose mytomicin-C, in patients with limited (PCI ≤ 20) and completely resected (CCS 0) peritoneal metastases, is assumed to reduce the expected risk of peritoneal recurrence from 50 to 30% at 3 years. Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide in women and the most lethal gynecologic malignancy due to the lack of accurate screening tools for early detection and late symptom onset. The absence of early-onset symptoms often delays diagnosis until the disease has progressed to advanced stages, frequently when there is peritoneal involvement. Although ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous malignancy with different histopathologic types, treatment for advanced tumors is usually based on chemotherapy and cytoreduction surgery. CAR T cells have shown promise for the treatment of hematological malignancies, though their role in treating solid tumors remains unclear. Outcomes are less favorable owing to the low capacity of CAR T cells to migrate to the tumor site, the influence of the protective tumor microenvironment, and the heterogeneity of surface antigens on tumor cells. Despite these results, CAR T cells have been proposed as a treatment approach for peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal and gastric origin. Local intraperitoneal administration of CAR T cells has been found to be superior to systemic administration, as this route is associated with increased tumor reduction, a more durable effect, protection against local relapse and distant metastases, and fewer systemic adverse effects. In this article we review the application of CAR T cells for the treatment of ovarian cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis from ovarian cancer.

The Covid-19 pandemic has increased the inequality of rights around the world. The intellectual property system contributes to this asymmetry by limiting access to vaccines and other health technologies to only a few producers. This article addresses the impacts of this system, presents and analyses alternatives for broadening the supply of these health goods – such as compulsory licensing – and demonstrates the importance of defending the TRIPS Waiver mechanism in the fight against the coronavirus.

The monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) is among the most feared snakes in Southeast Asia due to its toxicity, which is predominantly derived from long-chain α-neurotoxins. The only specific treatment for snakebite envenoming is antivenom based on animal-derived polyclonal antibodies. Despite the lifesaving importance of these medicines, major limitations in safety, supply consistency, and efficacy create a need for improved treatments. Here, we describe the discovery and subsequent optimization of a recombinant human monoclonal immunoglobulin G antibody against α-cobratoxin using phage display technology. Affinity maturation by light chain-shuffling resulted in a significant increase in in vitro neutralization potency and in vivo efficacy. The optimized antibody prevented lethality when incubated with N. kaouthia whole venom prior to intravenous injection. This study is the first to demonstrate neutralization of whole snake venom by a single recombinant monoclonal antibody, thus providing a tantalizing prospect of bringing recombinant antivenoms based on human monoclonal or oligoclonal antibodies to the clinic.

Background Mechanical circulatory support devices, such as the intra‐aortic balloon pump (IABP) and Impella, are often used in patients on veno‐arterial extracorporeal life support (VA‐ECLS) with cardiogenic shock despite limited supporting clinical trial data. Methods and Results Hospitalizations for cardiogenic shock from 2016 to 2018 were identified from the National Inpatient Sample. Trends in the use of VA‐ECLS with and without an IABP or Impella were assessed semiannually. Multivariable logistic regression and general linear regression evaluated the association of Impella and IABP use with in‐hospital outcomes. Overall, 12 035 hospitalizations with cardiogenic shock and VA‐ECLS were identified, of which 3115 (26%) also received an IABP and 1880 (16%) an Impella. Teléfono de la Esperanza (TE) is the main Spanish helpline providing telephone listening and support for callers in crisis. Crisis helplines can facilitate the identification of persons at risk for suicide. The main goals of this cross-sectional study were to identify severe suicidal ideation and to explore the differential characteristics between callers with severe and low-moderate suicidal ideation. A sample of 26,032 callers to TE was assessed; 544 callers with suicidal ideation were evaluated through ATENSIS, an assessment tool designed to collect information related to suicidal ideation. Comparisons between severe and low-moderate suicidal ideators in sociodemographics, telephone call timing, risk factors, and suicidality variables were conducted. Sixty-four (11.8%) of the suicidal ideators presented with severe suicidal ideation and 480 (88.2%) with low-moderate severity. Significant differences in several sociodemographic characteristics, risk factors, and suicidality variables between both levels of suicidal ideation severity were found. In the regression analysis, the main variables related to the presence of high suicidal ideation severity were preparatory acts, previous suicide attempts, non-suicidal self-injuries, lack of life sense, age, and hopelessness. It is concluded that helplines can be used to identify suicidal ideation among callers and to provide rapid crisis interventions according to the risk of suicide.

Essential oils (EOs) extracted from plants have a high potential to reduce ethylene biosynthesis, although their effects have not been deeply studied yet on the key components of the ethylene biosynthesis pathway: l-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic (ACC) oxidase activity, ACC synthase activity, and ACC content. Hence, the present study aimed to elucidate the effects of released EOs from active packaging (with different EO doses ranging from 100 to 1000 mg m−2) on the ethylene biosynthesis key components of broccoli and tomato under different storage temperature scenarios. The largest ethylene inhibitory effects on broccoli and tomatoes were demonstrated by grapefruit EO and thyme essential EO (up to 63%), respectively, which were more pronounced at higher temperatures. Regarding EO doses, active packaging with a thyme EO dose of 1000 mg m−2 resulted in the strongest reduction (33–38%) of ethylene production in tomatoes. For broccoli, identical results were shown with a lower grapefruit EO dose of 500 mg m−2. The studied EO-active packaging decreased ACC synthase and ACC oxidase activities by 40–50% at 22 °C. Therefore, this EO-active packaging is a natural and effective technology to reduce ethylene biosynthesis in broccoli and tomatoes when they are stored, even in unsuitable scenarios at high temperatures.

The automation of welding processes requires the use of automated systems and equipment, in many cases industrial robotic systems, to carry out welding processes that previously required human intervention. Automation in the industry offers numerous advantages, such as increased efficiency and productivity, cost reduction, improved product quality, increased flexibility and safety, and greater adaptability of companies to market changes. The field of welding automation is currently undergoing a period of profound change due to a combination of technological, regulatory, and economic factors worldwide. Nowadays, the most relevant aspect of the welding industry is meeting customer requirements by satisfying their needs. To achieve this, the automation of the welding process through sensors and control algorithms ensures the quality of the parts and prevents errors, such as porosity, unfused areas, deformations, and excessive heat. This paper proposes an intelligent and adaptive system based on the measurement of welding joints using laser scanning and the subsequent analysis of the obtained point cloud to adapt welding trajectories. This study focuses on the optimization of T-joints under specific welding conditions and is intended as an initial implementation of the algorithm, thus establishing a basis to be worked on further for a broader welding application.

There are many mechanical and/or electrical energy storage devices nowadays which can be mounted on standard bicycles. The current trend regarding bicycle energy storage devices is to develop and improve electrical and electronic systems that can ease transportation. However, this paper shows the design process of a purely mechanical energy storage device, with no electrical components, which instead aims to entertain the user, producing a stimulus related to speed and physical exertion. The mechanical device has been designed according to an aspect or fashion known as steampunk, so that the mechanical elements forming the device (springs and spur gears) are visible to the user. The storage and discharge of energy are only produced by the user. In order to charge the device, after reaching an appropriate speed, the user uses the pedals in reverse motion. Alternatively, the mechanism can also be charged with a controlled braking system by actuating on a crank. The design process was based on the total design of Pugh and the AHP and QFD techniques.

ABSTRACT Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) plays a key role in the management of patients with obstructive coronary artery disease. Besides, depending on the patients’ clinical presentation, characteristics, comorbidities, and coronary anatomy, an increasing number of patients will undergo a high-risk PCI. Left ventricular assist devices, as the intra-aortic balloon pump, TandemHeart, Impella, HeartMate PHP, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are useful tools to provide circulatory support for high-risk PCIs. Some studies and trials have assessed its impact on this clinical scenario with controversial results. This review provides an overview on the scientific evidence available on the use of left ventricular assist devices and their potential role in high-risk PCI.

RESUMEN La intervención coronaria percutánea (ICP) desempeña un papel fundamental en el tratamiento de los pacientes con enfermedad coronaria obstructiva. De ellos, un porcentaje significativo se someterán a un procedimiento de alto riesgo, en función de la presentación clínica, las características del paciente y su anatomía coronaria. Los dispositivos de asistencia ventricular izquierda, como el balón intraaórtico de contrapulsación, el dispositivo TandemHeart, el Impella, los dispositivos HeartMate PHP y las técnicas de oxigenación veno-arterial con oxigenador extracorpóreo de membrana (ECMO), son herramientas empleadas para proporcionar soporte circulatorio en la ICP de alto riesgo, con un impacto creciente en la práctica clínica. Existen numerosos trabajos en la literatura científica sobre su empleo en este escenario, con resultados controvertidos. Esta revisión proporciona una visión general de la evidencia disponible sobre el empleo de los distintos tipos de dispositivos, así como de su potencial papel en la ICP de alto riesgo.

The robotic welding manufacturing of metal parts is a very important process, especially in heavy industries such as shipbuilding, oil and gas, automotive, and aerospace. There is a great variety of different techniques for manufacturing by robotic welding, and the welding operations are always in a constant process of evolution, as any advance can be significant to avoid defects during the welding process. Although a great deal of research work has been carried out in recent years, thanks to which results and reviews have been presented on this subject, the main aim of this publication is to define and review works that show the advances in the main inspection, modeling, monitoring, and automated operations during the welding process to avoid, or predictively identify, any possible defect in order to obtain an optimum degree of quality in the welding.

Latest advances in the field of cancer immunotherapy have developed the (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) CAR-T cell therapy. This therapy was first used in hematological malignancies which obtained promising results; therefore, the use of CAR-T cells has become a popular approach for treating non-solid tumors. CAR-T cells consist of T-lymphocytes that are engineered to express an artificial receptor against any surface antigen of our choice giving us the capacity of offering precise and personalized treatment. This leaded to the development of CAR-T cells for treating solid tumors with the hope of obtaining the same result; however, their use in solid tumor and their efficacy have not achieved the expected results. The reason of these results is because solid tumors have some peculiarities that are not present in hematological malignancies. In this review we explain how CAR-T cells are made, their mechanism of action, adverse effect and how solid tumors can evade their action, and also we summarize their use in colorectal cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis.

La pandemia ha llevado a reflexionar sobre adecuaciones en las jornadas de trabajo, reduciendo los tiempos de presencialidad y transitando aceleradamente a sistemas de teletrabajo y trabajo remoto, lo anterior ha obligado a los sistemas de gobierno universitario a flexibilizar los sistemas de seguimiento y control, pero al mismo tiempo ha generado que trabajadores y trabajadoras aumenten el tiempo empleado en el desarrollo de sus actividades con los desafíos y tareas encomendadas. Este ensayo revisa los elementos asociados a la reducción de la jornada laboral y los desafíos que esta nueva normalidad acarrea para los gobiernos universitarios luego de la capacitación e instalación de sistemas robustos que permitan realizar las mismas tareas fuera del espacio de la organización.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction with a rapid onset and it is potentially life-threatening. Its clinical manifestations are varied; they may affect the skin, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, and the digestive system, among others. The treatment of choice, which is an intra-muscular injection of epinephrine (adrenaline), must be applied promptly. Therefore, being prepared to recognize it properly is of crucial importance. The objective of this clinical practice guide is to improve the knowledge of health professionals about anaphylaxis and, consequently, to optimize the treatment and long-term management of this reaction. This guide is adapted to the peculiarities of Latin America; especially in matters regarding the treatment. The need to introduce epinephrine auto-injectors in countries that don’t have them yet is highlighted.

Passive immunization using monoclonal antibodies will play a vital role in the fight against COVID-19. The recent emergence of viral variants with reduced sensitivity to some current antibodies and vaccines highlights the importance of broad cross-reactivity. This study describes deep-mining of the antibody repertoires of hospitalized COVID-19 patients using phage display technology and B cell receptor (BCR) repertoire sequencing to isolate neutralizing antibodies and gain insights into the early antibody response. This comprehensive discovery approach has yielded a panel of potent neutralizing antibodies which bind distinct viral epitopes including epitopes conserved in SARS-CoV-1. Structural determination of a non-ACE2 receptor blocking antibody reveals a previously undescribed binding epitope, which is unlikely to be affected by the mutations in any of the recently reported major viral variants including B.1.1.7 (from the UK), B.1.351 (from South Africa) and B.1.1.28 (from Brazil). Finally, by combining sequences of the RBD binding and neutralizing antibodies with the B cell receptor repertoire sequencing, we also describe a highly convergent early antibody response. Similar IgM-derived sequences occur within this study group and also within patient responses described by multiple independent studies published previously.
