By addressing the academic imperative for mental health education and crisis intervention, this exploratory study evaluates the desirability and availability of undergraduate education in recognizing and supporting mental health conditions and crises in hospitality and tourism industry settings. Hospitality and tourism management faculty and undergraduate students were surveyed through an online survey. The majority of faculty and students agreed mental health is important to learn in the classroom to prepare for industry, yet the majority have neither taught nor learned about mental health education and crisis intervention. The findings contribute to how educational leadership influences mental health training integration in classroom instruction. Recommendations included conducting feasibility studies with hospitality management educators on the integration of mental health in classroom learning; conducting larger, more generalizable studies on the effects of such education; and integrating effective mental health and crisis intervention training for hospitality management educators and students into curricula across the field. Objectives: This paper investigates a community-based intervention for young fathers, FatherWorks, compared to care-as-usual, 24/7 Dads. We hypothesized that utilizing the FatherWorks intervention (a 15 session parenting intervention, 13 session employment class, paid internship, case management, and access to behavioral health services) will assist in readiness to use condoms and increase condom usage, which may differ by race/ethnicity. Methods: Eligible males (n = 328) were enrolled into a Randomized Control Trial. Participants were 15–24 years old and had fathered one or more children with a female under the age of 21. A survey was taken at baseline and at 15 weeks following the intervention. Results: Analyses of changes indicated that intervention participants improved from the pre-contemplation stage of condom usage towards contemplation, and from preparation to action. The pattern of improvement in the condom use stage of change was different in African-American versus Hispanic participants. Changes in condom use during last intercourse were not significant. Conclusions: Study findings indicate that FatherWorks is successful in increasing the intent to use condoms, with the effect manifesting differently in African-American and Hispanic young fathers. This article provides information on a student activity which examined the relationship between race, class and gender and the power structure of work and production. The activity not only allowed students to experience new and different models of dividing labor, it also provided a setting to challenge their existing assumptions about what factors affect labor forces. Including the use of imaginary biographies also made students consider labor outside of formal work, especially childcare and domestic work at home. This activity uses many sociological concepts, which include a comparison of functional and critical analyses of income and power inequality, dual labor markets, the division of labor in different economic systems and institutional and individual discrimination based on race, class, gender, age and education. Consequently, this activity would be useful in a variety of sociology courses. In Introduction to Sociology and Social Problems courses, this activity would be a fun, interactive and hands-on project for students. Instructors of Sociology of Work and Stratification courses could use this activity to emphasize the types of social inequality and statuses which affect the labor force and the real consequences of such inequality.
