Abstract Liver metastasis remains the primary cause of mortality in patients with colon cancer. Identifying specific driver gene mutations that contribute to metastasis may offer viable therapeutic targets. To explore clonal evolution and genetic heterogeneity within the metastasis, we conducted single-cell exome sequencing on 150 single cells isolated from the primary tumor, liver metastasis, and lymphatic metastasis from a stage IV colon cancer patient. The genetic landscape of the tumor samples revealed that both lymphatic and liver metastases originated from the same region of the primary tumor. Notably, the liver metastasis was derived directly from the primary tumor, bypassing the lymph nodes. Comparative analysis of the sequencing data for individual cell pairs within different tumors demonstrated that the genetic heterogeneity of both liver and lymphatic metastases was also greater than that of the primary tumor. This finding indicates that liver and lymphatic metastases arose from clusters of circulating tumor cell (CTC) of a polyclonal origin, rather than from a single cell from the primary tumor. Single-cell transcriptome analysis suggested that higher EMT score and CNV scores were associated with more polyclonal metastasis. Additionally, a mutation in the TRPS1 (Transcriptional repressor GATA binding 1) gene, TRPS1 R544Q, was enriched in the single cells from the liver metastasis. The mutation significantly increased CRC invasion and migration both in vitro and in vivo through the TRPS1R544Q/ZEB1 axis. Further TRPS1 mutations were detected in additional colon cancer cases, correlating with advanced-stage disease and inferior prognosis. These results reveal polyclonal seeding and TRPS1 mutation as potential mechanisms driving the development of liver metastases in colon cancer.

Abstract Background In 2022, our team launched the pioneering national proficiency testing (PT) scheme for the pathological diagnosis of breast cancer, rapidly establishing its credibility throughout China. Aiming to continuously monitor and improve the proficiency of Chinese pathologists in breast pathology, the second round of the PT scheme was initiated in 2023, which will expand the number of participating institutions, and will conduct a nationwide investigation into the interpretation of HER2 0, 1+, and 2+/FISH- categories in China. Methods The methodology employed in the current round of PT scheme closely mirrors that of the preceding cycle in 2022, which is designed and implemented according to the “Conformity assessment—General requirements for proficiency testing”(GB/T27043—2012/ISO/IEC 17043:2010). More importantly, we utilized a statistics-based method to generate assigned values to enhance their robustness and credibility. Results The final PT results, published on the website of the National Quality Control Center for Cancer ( http://117.133.40.88:3927 ), showed that all participants passed the testing. However, a few institutions demonstrated systemic biases in scoring HER2 0, 1+, and 2+/FISH- with accuracy levels below 59%, considered unsatisfactory. Especially, the concordance rate for HER2 0 cases was only 78.1%, indicating challenges in distinguishing HER2 0 from low HER2 expression. Meanwhile, areas for histologic type and grade interpretation improvement were also noted. Conclusions Our PT scheme demonstrated high proficiency in diagnosing breast cancer in China. But it also identified systemic biases in scoring HER2 0, 1+, and 2+/FISH- at some institutions. More importantly, our study highlighted challenges in the evaluation at the extreme lower end of the HER2 staining spectrum, a crucial area for further research. Meanwhile, it also revealed the need for improvements in interpreting histologic types and grades. These findings strengthened the importance of robust quality assurance mechanisms, like the nationwide PT scheme conducted in this study, to maintain high diagnostic standards and identify areas requiring further training and enhancement.

Abstract People procrastinate, but why? One long-standing hypothesis is that temporal discounting drives procrastination: in a task with a distant future reward, the discounted future reward fails to provide sufficient motivation to initiate work early. However, empirical evidence for this hypothesis has been lacking. Here, we used a long-term real-world task and a novel measure of procrastination to examine the association between temporal discounting and real-world procrastination. To measure procrastination, we critically measured the entire time course of the work progress instead of a single endpoint, such as task completion day. This approach allowed us to compute a fine-grained metric of procrastination. We found a positive correlation between individuals’ degree of future reward discounting and their level of procrastination, suggesting that temporal discounting is a cognitive mechanism underlying procrastination. We found no evidence of a correlation when we, instead, measured procrastination by task completion day or by survey. This association between temporal discounting and procrastination offers empirical support for targeted interventions that could mitigate procrastination, such as modifying incentive systems to reduce the delay to a reward and lowering discount rates.

Abstract Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) have been associated with favorable immunotherapy responses and prognosis in various cancers. Despite their significance, their quantification using multiplex immunohistochemistry (mIHC) staining of T and B lymphocytes remains labor-intensive, limiting its clinical utility. To address this challenge, we curated a dataset from matched mIHC and H&E whole-slide images (WSIs) and developed a deep learning model for automated segmentation of TLSs. The model achieved Dice coefficients of 0.91 on the internal test set and 0.866 on the external validation set, along with intersection over union (IoU) scores of 0.819 and 0.787, respectively. The TLS ratio, defined as the segmented TLS area over the total tissue area, correlated with B lymphocyte levels and the expression of CXCL13, a chemokine associated with TLS formation, in 6140 patients spanning 16 tumor types from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The prognostic models for overall survival indicated that the inclusion of the TLS ratio with TNM staging significantly enhanced the models’ discriminative ability, outperforming the traditional models that solely incorporated TNM staging, in 10 out of 15 TCGA tumor types. Furthermore, when applied to biopsied treatment-naïve tumor samples, higher TLS ratios predicted a positive immunotherapy response across multiple cohorts, including specific therapies for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and stomach adenocarcinoma. In conclusion, our deep learning-based approach offers an automated and reproducible method for TLS segmentation and quantification, highlighting its potential in predicting immunotherapy response and informing cancer prognosis.

Abstract Aim Pathologists are currently supposed to be aware of both domestic and international guidelines for breast cancer diagnosis, but it is unclear how successfully these guidelines have been integrated into routine clinical practice in China. Thus, this national proficiency testing (PT) scheme for breast pathology was set up to conduct a baseline assessment of the diagnostic capability of pathologists in China. Methods This national PT plan is designed and implemented according to the “Conformity assessment—General requirements for proficiency testing” (GB/T27043—2012/ISO/IEC 17043:2010). Five cases of breast cancer with six key items, including histologic type, grade, ER, PR, HER2, and Ki67, were selected for testing among 96 participants. The final PT results were published on the website of the National Quality Control Center for Cancer ( http://117.133.40.88:3927/cn/col22/362 ). Results Our study demonstrated that the median PT score was 89.5 (54–100). Two institutions with scores 86%). However, the histologic grade showed low accuracy (74.0%). The unacceptable results mainly included incorrect evaluation of histologic grade (36.7%), inaccurate evaluation of ER/PR/HER2/Ki67 (28.2%), incorrect identification of C-AD as IBC-NST (15.7%), inappropriate use of 1+/2+/3+ rather than staining percentage for ER/PR (6.1%), misclassification of ER/PR

Abstract Purpose To investigate the correlations between metabolic parameters (MPs) of 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), serum tumor markers (STMs), and tumor mutational burden (TMB) in patients with non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, we enrolled 129 patients with NSCLC (males, 78; females, 51) who underwent baseline TMB and STM tests and 18F‐FDG PET/CT scans before treatment between March 2018 and September 2022. Thermal protection of high temperature turbine restricts the performance of gas turbine. In order to increase turbine inlet temperature, water phase change rotating cooling scheme for turbine was proposed for using the gasification latent heat to improve cooling capacity. Numerical model of phase change rotating cooling was established to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics with Ansys CFX software using SST k-ω turbulence model. Results showed that phase change rotating cooling had good performance for cooling the rotating blades. The temperature drops of blades were more than 400 K with the average heat flux of 2.42 MW/m2. Due to the influence of flow thermal acceleration effect, the outlet pressure of cooling channel reached a maximum value of 7.23 MPa with a mass flow rate of 0.17 g/s. The outlet quality distribution under rotating condition was relatively uniform than nonrotating condition. The temperature increased firstly and then decreased in centripetal channel along phase change process because of pressure variation. Meanwhile, gas-liquid interface disappeared due to the Coriolis force, resulting in higher heat transfer coefficient than static condition. The normalized Nusselt number (Nus) of phase change rotating cooling reached 3.915, much higher than static liquid cooling.

This work attempts to introduce natural cold source to solve the prominent problem of high energy consumption of food refrigerated display cabinets. The characteristics of natural cold source food refrigerated display cabinet was systematically studied with a typical climate type of city. The theory and experimental methods were employed to analyze its operating strategy and refrigeration performance. Five working modes of the system are recommended according to the outdoor temperature. Besides, the studies proposed operational strategies for natural cold source refrigerated display cabinet systems concerning four typical days and throughout year, followed by an analysis of their energy-saving potential. The results of this study reveal that the natural cold source food refrigerated display cabinet could satisfy the cold storage requirement of food and has good energy saving ability. Compared with the traditional refrigeration system, the energy is saved by 25.46 %, 14.50 %, 15.65 %, 41.95 % on four typical days for natural cold source food refrigerated display cabinet, and save energy consumption by 21.08 % throughout the year. This study can provide a technical support for the energy-saving operation of food refrigerated display cabinets.

MET alterations, including MET exon 14 skipping variants, MET amplification, MET overexpression, and MET fusion, play pivotal roles in primary tumorigenesis and acquired resistance to targeted therapies, especially EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors. They represent important diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers in many solid tumor types. However, the detection of MET alterations is challenging due to the complexity of MET alterations and the diversity of platform technologies. Therefore, techniques with high sensitivity, specificity, and reliable molecular detection accuracy are needed to overcome such hindrances and aid in biomarker-guided therapies. The current review emphasizes the role of MET alterations as oncogenic drivers in a variety of cancers and their involvement in the development of resistance to targeted therapies. Moreover, our review provides an overview of and recommendations on the selection of various cross-platform technologies for the detection of MET exon 14 skipping variants, MET amplification, MET overexpression, and MET fusion. Furthermore, challenges and hurdles underlying these common detection platforms are discussed.

Background: Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression is related to anti-HER2 therapy in many tumors. RC48- antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) has shown promising efficacy in patients with HER2-positive locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (UC). The characteristic expression and scoring systems of HER2 are nonexistent in UC. We aimed to explore HER2 status and its correlation with the efficacy of HER2-targeting ADC therapy in UC. Methods: A total of 137 and 43 patients were enrolled in cohort 1 and cohort 2, respectively, from March 2009 to December 2018. The patients in cohort 2 were enrolled in a phase II study of RC48-ADC. UC samples were tested for HER2 status using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and/or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The 2018 ASCO/CAP HER2 scoring system was adopted and modified to score HER2 expression in UC. Results: The HER2-positive (IHC 2+ or 3+) rate was 24.1% (33/137). In HER2 IHC 2+ or 3+ patients, the HER2 gene amplification rate was 31% (13/42). The objective response rates (ORRs) in RC48-ADC-treated patients with IHC 3+, IHC 2+ and FISH+, IHC 2+ and FISH- were 58.8%, 66.7% and 40%, respectively. The ORR showed a trend toward a better benefit for RC48-ADC therapy in patients with HER2 amplification than in those without amplification (61.5% vs. 44.8%, P = 0.059). The heterogeneity of HER2 expression in the primary tumor was 55.5% (15/27), and the ORR was not significantly different between patients with tumor heterogeneity and homogeneity. Conclusions: IHC testing should be performed to assess the HER2 status before the initiation of HER2-ADC therapy. There was a trend toward a better benefit for patients with HER2 amplification, and tumor heterogeneity did not influence the drug efficacy.

As a potential fire scenario for bridge structures, the safety impact of an FRP anti-collision floating pontoon fire on bridge structures cannot be ignored. Taking the FRP anti-collision floating pontoon fire that occurred in a continuous rigid-frame bridge as the engineering background, the damage condition of the actual bridge fire scene was first investigated. In addition, FDS 5.3 software was used to simulate the FRP anti-collision floating pontoon fire scenario. Furthermore, the thermal–structural coupling method was used to investigate the thermodynamic response of double-armed thin-walled piers under fire. The results show that the FRP anti-collision floating pontoon fire causes localized concrete carbonization and spalling on the surface of the P2 pier, and the FRP anti-collision floating pontoons are largely destroyed. The fire has the greatest impact on the P2-1 pier, with the highest temperature of 667 °C on the windward side and the highest temperature of 326 °C on the leeward side. The temperature impact range is 6 m above the bearing platform, and the maximum damage depth of pier body concrete is 84.58 mm. The deformation and stress of the P2 pier under fire do not show significant changes and do not exceed the allowable limits for structural deformation and material stress. Therefore, the impact of this fire accident on the structural safety of the continuous rigid-frame bridge is minor. This study’s results provide reliable guidance for the fire safety assessment and post-fire structural repair of the continuous rigid-frame bridge.

Since the beginning of March 2022, the epidemic due to the Omicron variant has developed rapidly in Jilin Province. To figure out the key controlling factors and validate the model to show the success of the Zero-COVID policy in the province, we constructed a Recursive Zero-COVID Model quantifying the strength of the control measures, and defined the control reproduction number as an index for describing the intensity of interventions. Parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis were employed to estimate and validate the impact of changes in the strength of different measures on the intensity of public health preventions qualitatively and quantitatively. The recursive Zero-COVID model predicted that the dates of elimination of cases at the community level of Changchun and Jilin Cities to be on April 8 and April 17, respectively, which are consistent with the real situation. Our results showed that the strict implementation of control measures and adherence of the public are crucial for controlling the epidemic. It is also essential to strengthen the control intensity even at the final stage to avoid the rebound of the epidemic. In addition, the control reproduction number we defined in the paper is a novel index to measure the intensity of the prevention and control measures of public health.

Introduction: Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are a promising cell type for tissue engineering, however, the application of BMSCs is largely hampered by the limited number harvested from bone marrow cells. The methods or strategies that focused on promoting the capacity of BMSCs expansion ex vivo become more and more important. Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA), the main active components of Danshen, has been found to promote BMSCs proliferation, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. The aim of this study is to explore the effect and underlying mechanism of Tan IIA on the expansion capacity of hBMSCs ex vivo. Methods: In this present study, the effect of Tan IIA on the expansion capacity of BMSCs from human was investigated, and quantitative proteome analysis was applied furtherly to identify the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and the molecular signaling pathways in Tan IIA-treated hBMSCs. Finally, molecular biology skills were employed to verify the proposed mechanism of Tan IIA in promoting hBMSCs expansion. Results: The results showed that a total of 84 DEPs were identified, of which 51 proteins were upregulated and 33 proteins were downregulated. Besides, Tan IIA could promote hBMSCs proliferation by regulating the progression of S phase via increasing the release of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), FGF-mediated PI3K/AKT signaling pathways may play an important role in Tan IIA's effect on hBMSCs expansion. Conclusions: This study employed molecular biology skills combined with quantitative proteome analysis, to some extent, clarified the mechanism of Tan IIA's effect on promoting hBMSCs proliferation, and will give a hint that Tan IIA may have the potential to be used for BMSCs applications in cell therapies in the future.

Abstract Background Countries that aimed for eliminating the cases of COVID-19 with test-trace-isolate policy are found to have lower infections, deaths, and better economic performance, compared with those that opted for other mitigation strategies. However, the continuous evolution of new strains has raised the question of whether COVID-19 eradication is still possible given the limited public health response capacity and fatigue of the epidemic. We aim to investigate the mechanism of the Zero-COVID policy on outbreak containment, and to explore the possibility of eradication of Omicron transmission using the citywide test-trace-isolate (CTTI) strategy. Methods We develop a compartmental model incorporating the CTTI Zero-COVID policy to understand how it contributes to the SARS-CoV-2 elimination. We employ our model to mimic the Delta outbreak in Fujian Province, China, from September 10 to October 9, 2021, and the Omicron outbreak in Jilin Province, China for the period from March 1 to April 1, 2022. Projections and sensitivity analyses were conducted using dynamical system and Latin Hypercube Sampling/ Partial Rank Correlation Coefficient (PRCC). Results Calibration results of the model estimate the Fujian Delta outbreak can end in 30 (95% confidence interval CI: 28–33) days, after 10 (95% CI: 9–11) rounds of citywide testing. The emerging Jilin Omicron outbreak may achieve zero COVID cases in 50 (95% CI: 41–57) days if supported with sufficient public health resources and population compliance, which shows the effectiveness of the CTTI Zero-COVID policy. Conclusions The CTTI policy shows the capacity for the eradication of the Delta outbreaks and also the Omicron outbreaks. Nonetheless, the implementation of radical CTTI is challenging, which requires routine monitoring for early detection, adequate testing capacity, efficient contact tracing, and high isolation compliance, which constrain its benefits in regions with limited resources. Moreover, these challenges become even more acute in the face of more contagious variants with a high proportion of asymptomatic cases. Hence, in regions where CTTI is not possible, personal protection, public health control measures, and vaccination are indispensable for mitigating and exiting the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract Background Although neoadjuvant anti-PD-1 immunotherapies have shown good efficacy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, there is still a lack of effective predictive markers. We aimed to develop a pretreatment histologic scoring system to predict the efficacy of neoadjuvant immunotherapy. Methods One hundred forty NSCLC cases were evaluated in this study. Initially, surgical specimens from 31 squamous cell lung cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant anti-PD-1 therapy and their eligible paired pretreatment biopsies were used for pathologic evaluation and developing the pretreatment scoring system, immune-related histologic phenotype assessment criteria (irHPC). Three trained pathologists independently scored the haematoxylin-eosin (HE) slides of the pretreatment tumour biopsies according to irHPC. The follow-up was from 07 March 2018 to 31 December 2021, mainly focusing on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Second, 109 biopsies of lung squamous cell carcinoma were evaluated to explore the relationship between eosinophils and PD-L1 expression. Results Superior 2-year DFS rates and 2-year OS rates were observed in patients who achieved major pathologic response (MPR) (MPR vs. non-MPR: 92.9% vs. 78.6%; 100.0% vs. 93.3%). Whether necrosis was included in the calculation of the per cent of residual viable tumour (%RVT) or not had almost no effect on the consistency of pathologic assessment and the histological response grouping. The interpathologist variability in assessing %RVT with immune-activated phenotype was not statistically significant (P = 0.480). Four immune-related features of pretreatment biopsies were included for calculating the predictive score. The trained pathologist accurately predicted most cases according to irHPC. For interobserver reproducibility using “2 points” as the cutoff, the overall per cent agreement was 77.8%. The reliability between pathologists for a binary tumour evaluation showed “moderate” agreement (κ = 0.54). Patients with scores ≥ 2 points tended to have better 2-year DFS rates and 2-year OS rates than those with scores < 2 points (85.7% vs. 71.4%; 100.0% vs. 87.5%). Conclusions The irHPC scoring system reflecting the preexisting immune response could be used to predict pathologic response to neoadjuvant immunotherapy, possibly further predicting the long-term prognosis, but larger trials are needed for verification.

The gas sensitivity of the W defect in WS2 (VW/WS2) to five toxic gases—HCHO, CH4, CH3HO, CH3OH, and CH3CH3—has been examined in this article. These five gases were adsorbed on the VW/WS2 surface, and the band, density of state (DOS), charge density difference (CDD), work function (W), current–voltage (I–V) characteristic, and sensitivity of adsorption systems were determined. Interestingly, for HCHO-VW/WS2, the energy level contribution of HCHO is closer to the Fermi level, the charge transfer (B) is the largest (0.104 e), the increase in W is more obvious than other adsorption systems, the slope of the I–V characteristic changes more obviously, and the calculated sensitivity is the highest. To sum up, VW/WS2 is more sensitive to HCHO. In conclusion, VW/WS2 has a great deal of promise for producing HCHO chemical sensors due to its high sensitivity and selectivity for HCHO, which can aid in the precise and efficient detection of toxic gases.

Abstract Background Since December 2020, public health agencies have implemented a variety of vaccination strategies to curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2, along with pre-existing Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs). Initial strategies focused on vaccinating the elderly to prevent hospitalizations and deaths, but with vaccines becoming available to the broader population, it became important to determine the optimal strategy to enable the safe lifting of NPIs while avoiding virus resurgence. Methods We extended the classic deterministic SIR compartmental disease-transmission model to simulate the lifting of NPIs under different vaccine rollout scenarios. Using case and vaccination data from Toronto, Canada between December 28, 2020, and May 19, 2021, we estimated transmission throughout past stages of NPI escalation/relaxation to compare the impact of lifting NPIs on different dates on cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, given varying degrees of vaccine coverages by 20-year age groups, accounting for waning immunity. Results We found that, once coverage among the elderly is high enough (80% with at least one dose), the main age groups to target are 20–39 and 40–59 years, wherein first-dose coverage of at least 70% by mid-June 2021 is needed to minimize the possibility of resurgence if NPIs are to be lifted in the summer. While a resurgence was observed for every scenario of NPI lifting, we also found that under an optimistic vaccination coverage (70% coverage by mid-June, along with postponing reopening from August 2021 to September 2021) can reduce case counts and severe outcomes by roughly 57% by December 31, 2021. Conclusions Our results suggest that focusing the vaccination strategy on the working-age population can curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2. However, even with high vaccination coverage in adults, increasing contacts and easing protective personal behaviours is not advisable since a resurgence is expected to occur, especially with an earlier reopening.

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare phenomenon. Although renal cell carcinoma is the most common recipient tumor, metastatic lobular breast carcinoma to clear cell renal cell carcinoma is even rarer, with only one case reported to date. We present a 66-year-old female patient with an invasive lobular carcinoma history who was admitted to the hospital with a right renal mass. The patient received partial nephrectomy. The final established diagnosis is lobular breast carcinoma metastasizing to clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Thus, although rare, the simultaneous or consecutive find of a renal mass in follow-up should be carefully evaluated, especially in high-risk patients, including women with an advanced breast cancer history, as in this scenario.

At the end of 2021, with the rapid escalation of COVID19 cases due to the Omicron variant, testing centers in Canada were overwhelmed. To alleviate the pressure on the PCR testing capacity, many provinces implemented new strategies that promote self testing and adjust the eligibility for PCR tests, making the count of new cases underreported. We designed a novel compartmental model which captures the new testing guidelines, social behaviours, booster vaccines campaign and features of the newest variant Omicron. To better describe the testing eligibility, we considered the population divided into high risk and non-high-risk settings. The model is calibrated using data from January 1 to February 9, 2022, on cases and severe outcomes in Canada, the province of Ontario and City of Toronto. We conduct analyses on the impact of PCR testing capacity, self testing, different levels of reopening and vaccination coverage on cases and severe outcomes. Our results show that the total number of cases in Canada, Ontario and Toronto are 2.34 (95%CI: 1.22–3.38), 2.20 (95%CI: 1.15–3.72), and 1.97(95%CI: 1.13–3.41), times larger than reported cases, respectively. The current testing strategy is efficient if partial restrictions, such as limited capacity in public spaces, are implemented. Allowing more people to have access to PCR reduces the daily cases and severe outcomes; however, if PCR test capacity is insufficient, then it is important to promote self testing. Also, we found that reopening to a pre-pandemic level will lead to a resurgence of the infections, peaking in late March or April 2022. Vaccination and adherence to isolation protocols are important supports to the testing policies to mitigate any possible spread of the virus.

Although membrane separation technology has been widely used in the treatment of oily wastewater, the complexity and high cost of the membrane preparation, as well as its poor stability, limit its further development. In this study, via the vacuum-assisted suction filtration method, polydopamine (PDA)-coated TiO2 nanoparticles were tightly attached and embedded on both sides of laboratory filter paper (FP). The resultant FP possessed the typical wettability of high hydrophilicity in the air with the water contact angle (WCA) of 28°, superoleophilicity with the oil contact angle (OCA) close to 0°, underwater superoleophobicity with the underwater OCA greater than 150°, and superhydrophobicity under the water with the underoil WCA over 150° for five kinds of organic solvents (carbon tetrachloride, toluene, n-hexane, n-octane, and iso-octane). The separation efficiency of immiscible oil/water, oil-in-water, and water-in-oil emulsions using the modified FP is higher than 99%. After 17 cycles of emulsion separation, a high separation efficiency of 99% was still maintained for the FP, along with good chemical and mechanical stability. In addition, successful separation and purification were also realized for the oil-in-water emulsion that contained the methylene blue (MB) dye, along with the complete degradation of MB in an aqueous solution under UV irradiation.

Improper disposal of waste tires will not only bring environmental impact and safety risks but also cause a serious waste of resources. In the field of civil engineering materials, waste tire particles are used as a substitute for non-renewable aggregates to produce flexible rubber-cement composites (RCC). To explore the high-speed slicing stability of RCC, this test took normal cement mortar (NCM) and rubber cement mortar (RCM) as research objects. The SHPB tests with the same impact energy level and the high-speed slicing tests with a slice thickness range of about 1.4 mm ~ 4.4 mm were carried out. The results showed that NCM and RCM showed different stability differences in the process of high-speed slicing. In the case of ensuring the integrity of the slice, the minimum thickness of the slice can be better decreased with the increase of the rubber content. Finally, from the perspectives of split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test results and mesoscopic structure states, the essential reason for ensuring the stability of high-speed slicing lied in the improvement of rubber particles (dominant role) and pores on material deformation and flexible energy dissipation.

Nasolacrimal duct (NLD) damage is associated in the majority of type II and III naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) fractures.1 Our study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of prophylactic NLD intubation in the setting of facial fractures, by comparing incidence of postoperative epiphora and wound infection. A retrospective matched control study was conducted on all patients with surgically treated facial fractures from 2008 to 2013 (n = 280) (IRB ref number: DSRB 2013/01198). Patients with the following fracture types were included: NOE (n = 16), frontal sinus (n = 2), Le Fort II/III (n = 8), and > 1 type (n = 48). All patients in this study were included with the intention to treat. The study group comprised patients who were intubated, while the control group patients were not intubated. Each group had 37 patients matched for age, gender, fracture type, and injury type. A single oculoplastic surgeon skilled in lacrimal surgery performed the procedure for all intubated patients. Patients with more severe and complex facial fractures were intubated with bicanalicular Crawford stents. Postoperative epiphora and infective complications (both facial wound and dacryocystitis) were assessed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. There was no significant difference in incidence of either postoperative epiphora (p = 0.152) or wound infection (p = 0.556) comparing both groups. Reduced incidence of postoperative epiphora in the study group is statistically not significant and does not support the need for prophylactic intubation. If radiographic evidence of NLD disruption or regurgitation seen on syringing on the NLD intraoperatively is present, intubation is safe and efficacious only if performed by an expert.

Abstract Several clinical trials have shown the safety and effectiveness of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in neoadjuvant therapy in resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, 18–83% patients can benefit from it. In this study, we aimed to assess the association of PD-L1 expression, tumor mutation burden, copy number alteration (CNA, including copy number gain and loss) burden with the pathologic response to neoadjuvant PD-1 blockade and investigate the changes in the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) during neoadjuvant immunotherapy in NSCLC. Pre-immunotherapy treatment tumor samples from twenty-nine NSCLC patients who received neoadjuvant immunotherapy with sintilimab, an anti-PD-1 drug, were subjected to targeted DNA sequencing and PD-L1 immunochemistry staining. The pathological response was positively correlated with tumor proportion score (TPS) of PD-L1 and negatively correlated with copy number gain (CNgain) burden. Of note, the combination of CNgain burden and TPS can better stratify major pathological response (MPR) patients than did CNgain or TPS alone. Whereas, TMB showed a limited correlation with pathological regression. Additionally, PD-1 blockade led to an increase in CD8+PD-1−T cells which was clinically relevant to MPR as evaluated by multiplex immunofluorescence. A significant reduction in CD19+ cells was observed in the Non-MPR group but not in the MPR group, indicating the involvement of B cells in improving neoadjuvant immunotherapy response in NSCLC. Together, our study provides new data for the correlation of PD-L1 expression and genomic factors with drug response in neoadjuvant immunotherapy settings in NSCLC. The changes of TIME may provide novel insight into the immune responses to neoadjuvant anti-PD-1 therapy.

PurposeThe aim of this study was to develop a nomogram for predicting positive non-sentinel lymph nodes (non-SLNs) in positive SLN breast cancer patients and validate the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) nomogram for non-SLN metastasis in Chinese patients.MethodsThe pathological features of 2,561 breast cancer patients were retrospectively reviewed, and the patients were divided into training and validation cohorts. Positive non-SLN predictors were identified using univariate and multivariate analyses and used to construct the nomogram. In patients with positive SLNs, the MSKCC nomogram was used to calculate the probability of non-SLN metastasis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was calculated to assess the accuracy of this model and the MSKCC nomogram.ResultsAccording to multivariate logistic regression analysis, the number of positive and negative SLNs, tumor stage, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and extracapsular extension were independent predictive factors for non-SLN metastasis and were selected to establish the nomogram for predicting positive non-SLNs. This nomogram performed favorably in predicting positive non-SLNs, with AUCs of 0.765 and 0.741 for the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The MSKCC nomogram predicted non-SLN metastasis with an AUC of 0.755.ConclusionA nomogram was developed and validated to assist clinicians in evaluating the likelihood of positive non-SLN. For Chinese patients with a known ER status before surgery, the MSKCC nomogram can be used to predict non-SLN metastases.

BackgroundThe monkeypox outbreak in non-endemic countries in recent months has led the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). It is thought that festivals, parties, and other gatherings may have contributed to the outbreak.MethodsWe considered a hypothetical metropolitan city and modeled the transmission of the monkeypox virus in humans in a high-risk group (HRG) and a low-risk group (LRG) using a Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered (SEIR) model and incorporated gathering events. Model simulations assessed how the vaccination strategies combined with other public health measures can contribute to mitigating or halting outbreaks from mass gathering events.ResultsThe risk of a monkeypox outbreak was high when mass gathering events occurred in the absence of public health control measures. However, the outbreaks were controlled by isolating cases and vaccinating their close contacts. Furthermore, contact tracing, vaccinating, and isolating close contacts, if they can be implemented, were more effective for the containment of monkeypox transmission during summer gatherings than a broad vaccination campaign among HRG, when accounting for the low vaccination coverage in the overall population, and the time needed for the development of the immune responses. Reducing the number of attendees and effective contacts during the gathering could also prevent a burgeoning outbreak, as could restricting attendance through vaccination requirements.ConclusionMonkeypox outbreaks following mass gatherings can be made less likely with some restrictions on either the number and density of attendees in the gathering or vaccination requirements. The ring vaccination strategy inoculating close contacts of confirmed cases may not be enough to prevent potential outbreaks; however, mass gatherings can be rendered less risky if that strategy is combined with public health measures, including identifying and isolating cases and contact tracing. Compliance with the community and promotion of awareness are also indispensable to containing the outbreak.

The load of the showcase is a nonlinear and unstable time series data, and the traditional forecasting method is not applicable. Deep learning algorithms are introduced to predict the load of the showcase. Based on the CEEMD–IPSO–LSTM combination algorithm, this paper builds a refrigerated display cabinet load forecasting model. Compared with the forecast results of other models, it finally proves that the CEEMD–IPSO–LSTM model has the highest load forecasting accuracy, and the model’s determination coefficient is 0.9105, which is obviously excellent. Compared with other models, the model constructed in this paper can predict the load of showcases, which can provide a reference for energy saving and consumption reduction of display cabinet.

Abstract Background Definitive treatment of primary middle ear lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) is not well established owing to the rarity of this disease entity. We report a case of locally advanced primary middle ear LEC treated with concurrent chemoradiation, with good oncologic outcomes. Case presentation A 46 year-old female of Cantonese (Southern Chinese) descent presented with a four-month history of left sided hearing loss and non-pulsatile tinnitus, associated with progressive ipsilateral facial weakness. She had a left facial palsy (House-Brackmann 2) which then deteriorated to complete palsy over 2 weeks. Otoscopic examination of the left ear revealed a red-hued mass replacing the tympanic membrane. There was no cervical lymphadenopathy. Fibreoptic nasoendoscopy was unremarkable. Pure tone audiometry revealed profound mixed left hearing loss with type B impedance. Computed tomography of the temporal bone showed an ill-defined left middle ear mass with erosion of the malleus, tegmen tympani and facial canal. Magnetic Resonance Imaging showed an avidly enhancing lesion involving the dura of the left middle cranial fossa, tympanic and labyrinthine portions of the facial nerve. This mass extended into the apex of the left internal acoustic canal and basal turn of the cochlea. Histopathology confirmed EBV-positive primary middle ear LEC. Concurrent chemoradiation comprising 70Gy of intensity-modulated radiation therapy and 3 cycles of concurrent Cisplatin based chemotherapy over a 6 week period was administered. The patient achieved near-complete disease resolution on 3 month post-treatment imaging. Serum EBV DNA titres declined to undetectable levels and the patient is disease-free at 18 months post-diagnosis. Discussion and conclusion Concurrent chemoradiation with curative intent may be a viable treatment option for locally advanced middle ear LEC not amenable to surgical resection due to expected surgical morbidity. It confers good oncologic outcomes that mimic the response in other head and neck EBV-related lymphoepithelial carcinomas.

BackgroundThe pandemic of COVID-19 has been shaping economic developments of the world. From the standpoint of government measures to prevent and control the epidemic, the lockdown was widely used. It is essential to access the economic losses in a lockdown environment which will provide government administration with a necessary reference for decision making in controlling the epidemic.MethodsWe introduce the concept of “standard unit incident” and an economic losses assessment methodology for both the standard and the assessed area. We build a “standard unit lockdown” economic losses assessment system and indicators to estimate the economic losses for the monthly lockdown. Using the comprehensive assessment system, the loss infected coefficient of monthly economic losses during lockdown in the 40 countries has been calculated to assess the economic losses by the entropy weighting method (EWM) with data from the CSMAR database and CDC website.ResultsWe observe that countries in North America suffered the most significant economic losses due to the epidemic, followed by South America and Europe, Asia and Africa, and Oceania and Antarctica suffered relatively minor economic losses. The top 10 countries for monthly economic losses during lockdown were the United States, India, Brazil, France, Turkey, Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and Germany. The United States suffered the greatest monthly economic losses under lockdown ($65.3 billion), roughly 1.5 times that of China, while Germany suffered the least ($56.4 billion), roughly 1.3 times that of China.ConclusionLockdown as a control and mitigation strategy has great impact on the economic development and causes huge economic losses. The economic impact due to the pandemic has varied widely among the 40 countries. It will be important to conduct further studies to compare and understand the differences and the reasons behind.

Abstract Background Clinical detection of EGFR‐TKI resistance mechanism through tissue can be really challenging due to risks associated with the procedure. Thus, liquid biopsy, especially circulation tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis, can be an adequate source for biomarker testing in targeted therapy. Our study was aimed at clinical validation of liquid biopsy next‐generation sequencing (NGS) by comparison with tissue biopsy, and we also investigated clinical utility of ctDNA NGS on the prediction of TKI outcomes. Methods Using hybrid capture panel NGS, we compared the concordance, sensitivity, and specificity of ctDNA using 39 paired plasma and tissue biopsy, and investigated the association between ctDNA genomic alterations of 147 first‐generation TKI‐relapsed patients and their response to first‐ and third‐generation TKIs. Results The concordance for ctDNA and tissue biopsy was 84.62% among all patients, and even higher among late stage patients (88.24%). Among 147 EGFR‐TKI‐relapsed patients, T790M was the most common reason for resistance (40.13%). Compared with T790M‐positive patients, patients only detected with sensitizing mutations (sensi‐mutations) had lower mutant allele frequency (MAF) of sensi‐mutations (P = 0.031). TP53 mutation showed negative impact on TKI treatments. In survival analysis of third‐generation TKI, we found a positive correlation between ratio of T790M sensi‐mutation and PFS (P = 0.018); also, higher MAFs of both sensi‐mutation and T790M were observed in the PR group than the SD + PD group. Conclusions Both ratio of T790M sensi‐mutations and MAFs of EGFR mutations were associated with third‐generation TKI outcomes. Thus, incorporation of high‐throughput NGS into clinical trials may be crucial to identifying the response to osimertinib, as it provides more comprehensive genomic information. Key points High concordance of ctDNA and tissue biopsy was observed. NGS of ctDNA from 147 TKI‐relapsed patients showed that both high ratio of T790M sensitizing mutation (sensi‐mutation) and high MAFs of mutations were all associated with better third generation TKI treatment outcomes. The quantification of both MAFs and T790M sensi‐mutation ratio should be taken into consideration in some clinical situations, and incorporation of high‐throughput NGS into clinical trials may be crucial to identifying the response to osimertinib, as it provides more comprehensive genomic information.

The oral cavity and the intestine are the main distribution locations of human digestive bacteria. Exploring the relationships between the tongue coating and gut microbiota, the influence of the diurnal variations of the tongue coating microbiota on the intestinal microbiota can provide a reference for the development of the disease diagnosis and monitoring, as well as the medication time. In this work, a total of 39 healthy college students were recruited. We collected their tongue coating microbiota which was collected before and after sleep and fecal microbiota. The diurnal variations of tongue coating microbiota are mainly manifested on the changes in diversity and relative abundance. There are commensal bacteria in the tongue coating and intestines, especially Prevotella which has the higher proportion in both sites. The relative abundance of Prevotella in the tongue coating before sleep has a positive correlation with intestinal Prevotella; the r is 0.322 (p < 0.05). Bacteroides in the intestine had the most bacteria associated with the tongue coating and had the highest correlation coefficient with Veillonella in the oral cavity, which was 0.468 (p < 0.01). These results suggest that the abundance of the same flora in the two sites may have a common change trend. The SourceTracker results show that the proportion of intestinal bacteria sourced from tongue coating is less than 1%. It indicates that oral flora is difficult to colonize in the intestine in healthy people. This will provide a reference for the study on the oral and intestinal microbiota in diseases.

Operating schools safely during the COVID-19 pandemic requires a balance between health risks and the need for in-person learning. Using demographic and epidemiological data between 31 July and 23 November 2020 from Toronto, Canada, we developed a compartmental transmission model with age, household and setting structure to study the impact of schools reopening in September 2020. The model simulates transmission in the home, community and schools, accounting for differences in infectiousness between adults and children, and accounting for work-from-home and virtual learning. While we found a slight increase in infections among adults (2.2%) and children (4.5%) within the first eight weeks of school reopening, transmission in schools was not the key driver of the virus resurgence in autumn 2020. Rather, it was community spread that determined the outbreak trajectory, primarily due to increases in contact rates among adults in the community after school reopening. Analyses of cross-infection among households, communities and schools revealed that home transmission is crucial for epidemic progression and safely operating schools, while the degree of in-person attendance has a larger impact than other control measures in schools. This study suggests that safe school reopening requires the strict maintenance of public health measures in the community.

Initial efforts to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic have relied heavily on non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), including physical distancing, hand hygiene, and mask-wearing. However, an effective vaccine is essential to containing the spread of the virus. We developed a compartmental model to examine different vaccine strategies for controlling the spread of COVID-19. Our framework accounts for testing rates, test-turnaround times, and vaccination waning immunity. Using reported case data from the city of Toronto, Canada between Mar-Dec, 2020 we defined epidemic phases of infection using contact rates as well as the probability of transmission upon contact. We investigated the impact of vaccine distribution by comparing different permutations of waning immunity, vaccine coverage and efficacy throughout various stages of NPI's relaxation in terms of cases and deaths. The basic reproduction number is also studied. We observed that widespread vaccine coverage substantially reduced the number of cases and deaths. Under phases with high transmission, an early or late reopening will result in new resurgence of the infection, even with the highest coverage. On the other hand, under phases with lower transmission, 60% of coverage is enough to prevent new infections. Our analysis of R0 showed that the basic reproduction number is reduced by decreasing the tests turnaround time and transmission in the household. While we found that household transmission can decrease following the introduction of a vaccine, public health efforts to reduce test turnaround times remain important for virus containment.

As a cornerstone for many quantum linear algebraic and quantum machine learning algorithms, controlled quantum state preparation (CQSP) aims to provide the transformation of $|i\rangle |0^n\rangle \to |i\rangle |\psi_i\rangle $ for all $i\in \{0,1\}^k$ for the given $n$-qubit states $|\psi_i\rangle$. In this paper, we construct a quantum circuit for implementing CQSP, with depth $O\left(n+k+\frac{2^{n+k}}{n+k+m}\right)$ and size $O(2^{n+k})$ for any given number $m$ of ancillary qubits. These bounds, which can also be viewed as a time-space tradeoff for the transformation, are optimal for any integer parameters $m,k\ge 0$ and $n\ge 1$. When $k=0$, the problem becomes the canonical quantum state preparation (QSP) problem with ancillary qubits, which asks for efficient implementations of the transformation $|0^n\rangle|0^m\rangle \to |\psi\rangle |0^m\rangle$. This problem has many applications with many investigations, yet its circuit complexity remains open. Our construction completely solves this problem, pinning down its depth complexity to $\Theta(n+2^{n}/(n+m))$ and its size complexity to $\Theta(2^{n})$ for any $m$. Another fundamental problem, unitary synthesis, asks to implement a general $n$-qubit unitary by a quantum circuit. Previous work shows a lower bound of $\Omega(n+4^n/(n+m))$ and an upper bound of $O(n2^n)$ for $m=\Omega(2^n/n)$ ancillary qubits. In this paper, we quadratically shrink this gap by presenting a quantum circuit of the depth of $O\left(n2^{n/2}+\frac{n^{1/2}2^{3n/2}}{m^{1/2}}~~\right)$.

Using first principles based on density functional theory (DFT), the CO, NH3, NO, and NO2 gas adsorbed on intrinsic Graphite-like ZnO (g−ZnO) and vacancy-deficient g−ZnO were systematically studied. For intrinsic g−ZnO, the adsorption energy of NH3, NO, and NO2 adsorption defective g−ZnO systems increased significantly due to the introduction of Zn vacancy (VZn). Especially, for NH3, NO, and NO2 adsorbed Zn-vacancy g−ZnO (VZn/g−ZnO) systems increased to 1.366 eV, 2.540 eV and 2.532 eV, respectively. In addition, with the introduction of vacancies, the adsorption height of the gases adsorbed on VZn/g−ZnO system is significantly reduced, especially the adsorption height of the NH3 adsorbed on VZn/g−ZnO system is reduced to 0.686 Å. It is worth mentioning that the introduction of O-vacancy (VO) significantly enhances the charge transfer between NO or NO2 and VO/g−ZnO. This suggest that the defective g−ZnO is more suitable for detecting NH3, NO and NO2 gas. It is interesting to note that the adsorption of NO and NO2 gases gives rise to magnetic moments of 1 μB and 0.858 μB for g−ZnO, and 1 μB and 1 μB for VO/g−ZnO. In addition, VZn induced 1.996 μB magnetic moments for intrinsic g−ZnO, and the CO, NH3, NO and NO2 change the magnetic of VZn/g−ZnO. The adsorption of NO2 causes the intrinsic g−ZnO to exhibit metallic properties, while the adsorption of NH3 gas molecules causes VZn/g−ZnO also to show metallic properties. The adsorption of NO and NO2 causes VZn/g−ZnO to display semi-metallic properties. These results facilitate the enrichment of defect detection means and the design of gas detection devices.

A proportion of up to 10% of breast cancer resulted from hereditary germline pathogenic variants (GPVs) in cancer predisposition genes (CPGs), which been demonstrated distinct clinical features and imaging manifestations. However, the performance of imaging modalities for breast cancer surveillance in CPG mutation-carriers is still unclear, especially in Asian women. A population of 3002 breast cancer patients who received germline genetic testing of CPGs was enrolled from three hospitals in China. In total, 343 (11.6%) patients were found to harbor GPVs in CPGs, including 137 (4.6%) in BRCA1 and 135 (4.6%) in BRCA2. We compared the performances of ultrasound, mammograms, MRI, and the combining strategies in CPG mutation carriers and non-carriers. As a result, the ultrasound showed a higher detection rate compared with mammograms regardless of the mutation status. However, its detection rate was lower in CPG mutation carriers than in non-carriers (93.2% vs 98.0%, P=2.1×10-4), especially in the BRCA1 mutation carriers (90.9% vs 98.0%, P=2.0×10-4). MRI presented the highest sensitivity (98.5%) and the lowest underestimation rate (14.5%) in CPG mutation carriers among ultrasound, mammograms, and their combination. Supplemental ultrasound or mammograms would add no significant value to MRI for detecting breast cancer (P>0.05). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the family or personal cancer history could not replace the mutation status as the impact factor for the false-negative result and underestimation. In summary, clinicians and radiologists should be aware of the atypical imaging presentation of breast cancer in patients with GPVs in CPGs.

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogator is a scientific instrument that converts the wavelength change of FBG sensors into readable electrical signals. To achieve miniaturization and integration of FBG interrogator, we designed and fabricated a 36-channel array waveguide grating (AWG) on silica-based planar lightwave circuits (PLC) as a key device in a built FBG interrogation system. It is used to achieve continuous demodulation in C-band, while maintaining high resolution. This AWG has a 1.6 nm channel spacing, 3-dB bandwidth of 1.76 nm, non-adjacent channel crosstalk of −29.76 dB, and insertion loss of 3.46 dB. The dynamic range of the FBG interrogation system we built was tested to be 1522.4–1578.4 nm, with an interrogation resolution of 1 pm and accuracy of less than 1 pm in the dynamic range of 1523.16–1523.2 nm. The test results show that the FBG interrogation technology, based on AWG, can realize FBG wavelengths accurately demodulated, which has high application value in aerospace, deep sea exploration, and environmental monitoring, as well as other fields.

Introduction: Accurate results on the status of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) rely on not only the quality of immunohistochemistry testing but also the accuracy of the pathologic assessments. We explored the intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility of the interpretations for the companion diagnostics, the Dako PD-L1 22C3 pharmDx kit (Dako North America, Inc, Carpinteria, CA) and the VENTANA PD-L1 (SP263, Ventana Medical Systems, Inc, Tucson, AZ) assay, and the consistency between microscopic and digital interpretations of PD-L1. Methods: A total of 150 surgical specimens diagnosed as NSCLC from December 2013 to July 2017 were included in this study. Twenty pathologists from different medical centers were enrolled to interpret the results of PD-L1 on the same day. A total of 100 sections were stained with the 22C3 clone and scored for the interobserver reproducibility, 20 cases of which were interpreted twice to assess the intraobserver reproducibility, and 50 cases of which were scanned into digital images to measure the consistency between microscopic and digital interpretations. A total of 44 sections were stained with the SP263 clone and scored for the interobserver reproducibility. Results: For the intraobserver reproducibility of 22C3, the overall percent agreements were 92.0% and 89.0% for binary tumor evaluation at the cutoffs of 1% and 50%, respectively. The reliability among the pathologists revealed a substantial agreement for 22C3, whereas it revealed a substantial agreement at the cutoff of 1% and moderate agreement at the cutoffs of 25% and 50% for SP263. Microscopic and digital interpretations of PD-L1 revealed good consistency. Conclusions: Intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility of the interpretations for PD-L1 was high using the 22C3 clone but lower for the SP263 clone. Corresponding training on such assessments, especially on the cases around the specific cutoffs, is essential for markedly improving such reproducibility. Digital imaging could improve the reproducibility of interpretation for PD-L1 among pathologists.

Molecular doping is an excellent instrument to modify the electronic properties of two−dimensional materials. In our work, the structure and electronic properties of the adsorption systems of g−ZnO adsorbed by organic molecules (including Tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), and Tetrahydrofulvalene (TTF)) were investigated computationally using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The results showed that the TCNE and TCNQ, as electron receptors, doped the LUMO energy level above the valence band maximum (VBM) of the g−ZnO band structure, demonstrating effective p−type doping. The n−type doping of g−ZnO was obtained that the TTF molecules, as electron donors, doped the HOMO energy level below the conduction band minimum (CBM) of the band structure for g−ZnO. In addition, the TCNE, TCNQ, and TTF breathed additional holes or electrons into the monolayer g−ZnO, creating surface dipole moments between the g−ZnO and organic molecules, which caused work function to be adjustable, ranging from 3.871 eV to 5.260 eV. Our results prove that organic molecular doping was instrumental in improving the performance of g−ZnO−based nano−electronic devices, providing theoretical support for the fabrication of p−doping or n−doping nano−semiconductor components. The tunable range of field emission capability of g−ZnO−based electronic devices was also extended.
