Context: The existence of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) still poses challenges to theoretical and observational astronomers. Several candidates have been proposed, including the one in the IRS13 cluster in the Galactic centre, where the evidence is based on the velocity dispersion of its members, however, none have been confirmed to date. Aims: We aim to gain insights into the presence of an IMBH in the Galactic centre by a numerical study of the dynamical interplay between an IMBH and star clusters (SCs) in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole (SMBH). Methods: We use high-precision N-body models of IRS13-like SCs in the Galactic centre, and of more massive SCs that fall into the centre of the Galaxy from larger distances. Results: We find that at IRS13's physical distance of 0.4 pc, an IRS13-size SC cannot remain gravitationally bound even if it contains an IMBH of thousands $M_\odot$. Thus, IRS13 appears to be an incidental present-day clumping of stars. Furthermore, we show that the velocity dispersion of tidally disrupted SCs (the likely origin of IRS13) can be fully accounted for by the tidal forces of the central SMBH; the IMBH's influence is not essential., Comment: 7 pages, 1 table, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

In this contribution, we revisit the model of a dust-enshrouded star orbiting a low-luminosity galactic nucleus (Zajacek et al. 2014, 2016, 2017). Although it is quite challenging for dust to survive in hot X-ray-emitting plasma surrounding supermassive black holes (SMBHs), we now have an observational evidence that compact dusty objects or ``G'' objects can approach the SMBH in the Galactic center (Sgr A*) on the scale of a few 1000 gravitational radii. Since there are about ten G objects in the Galactic center, it is more likely that they are dust-enshrouded stars whose gaseous-dusty envelopes are stable within the corresponding tidal (Hill) radii of the order of a few astronomical units. Such a length-scale is consistent with their infrared broad-band spectral energy distributions. Broad emission lines, in particular Br-gamma recombination line, can be interpreted to arise within the accretion stream from the circumstellar envelopes forming a compact disc that is truncated by the stellar magnetic field. Alternatively, they could also be associated with circumstellar accretion-disc outflows as well as the material within a denser bow shock ahead of the star. In comparison with the line origin in the photoionized envelopes that can generally be tidally stretched, the scenario involving the circumstellar accretion-disc inflow or outflow can ensure that the line luminosity is rather stable, except for the viewing-angle effects. The existence of two distinct and apparently unrelated populations of dusty stellar objects in the Nuclear Stellar Cluster (NSC) of the Milky Way, namely IRS 13 and the S-cluster, are potentially prone to a general process describing the star formation history in the Galactic Center (GC). The former cluster is thought to be entangled in the clockwise and counterclockwise disks, a large-scale stellar distribution revealed by the analysis of stars at different distances from Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in the GC. Recently, this large-scale distribution was reported to exhibit a multi-disk structure with at least four components. Motivated by this finding, we revisit the anisotropic IRS 13 cluster and find strong evidence for a disk-like structure. An examination of about 50 individual stellar orbits reveals a new structure that does not follow any trend known in the literature. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of an inspiral cluster undergoing star formation processes, as proposed by several authors. Using a simplified N-body simulation to reproduce our observational results, we conclude that, under certain conditions, a massive cluster can migrate from the Circum Nuclear Disk toward the inner parsec. Based on this classification, we revisit the large-scale NACO (VLT) observations of IRS 13 and find evidence for a separation of the cluster into a gravitationally stable core remnant and a dissipating part. With the velocity-resolved H30{\alpha} line and the broadband spectral energy distribution of IRS 13E3, we provide tentative support for the existence of an intermediate-mass black hole of ~ 3 x 10^26 M_sun surrounded by a hot gaseous stream., Comment: 41 pages, 26 figures, Accepted and published at the ApJ

The observation of several L-band emission sources in the S cluster has led to a rich discussion of their nature. However, a definitive answer to the classification of the dusty objects requires an explanation for the detection of compact Doppler-shifted Br$\gamma$ emission. The ionized hydrogen in combination with the observation of mid-infrared $L$-band continuum emission suggests that most of these sources are embedded in a dusty envelope. These embedded sources are part of the S-cluster, and their relationship to the S-stars is still under debate. Until now, the question of the origin of these two populations is vague, although all explanations favor migration processes for the individual cluster members. This work revisits the S-cluster and its dusty members orbiting the supermassive black hole Sgr~A* on bound Keplerian orbits from a kinematic perspective. The aim is to explore the Keplerian parameters for patterns that might imply a non-random distribution of the sample. Additionally, various analytical aspects are considered to address the nature of the dusty sources. Based on the photometric analysis, we estimated the individual $H-K$ and $K-L$ colors for the source sample and compared the results to known cluster members. The classification revealed a noticeable contrast between the S-stars and the dusty sources. To fit the flux-density distribution, we utilized the radiative transfer code HYPERION and implemented a Young Stellar Object Class I model. We obtained the position angle from the Keplerian fit results, and additionally, we analyzed the distribution of the inclinations and the longitudes of the ascending node. We investigate the properties of strong (Hb+[OIII]) emitters before and after the end of the Epoch of Reionization from z=8 to z=5.5. We make use of ultra-deep JWST/NIRCam imaging in the Parallel Field of the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (P2-XDF), in order to select prominent (Hb+[OIII]) emitters (with rest EW_0 > 100 Angstroms) at z=5.5-7, based on their flux density enhancement in the F356W band with respect to the spectral energy distribution continuum. We complement our selection with other (Hb+[OIII]) emitters from the literature at similar and higher (z=7-8) redshifts. We find (non-independent) anti-correlations between EW_0(Hb+[OIII]) and both galaxy stellar mass and age, in agreement with previous studies, and a positive correlation with specific star formation rate (sSFR). On the SFR-M* plane, the (Hb+[OIII]) emitters populate both the star-formation main sequence and the starburst region, which become indistinguishable at low stellar masses (log10(M*) < 7.5). We find tentative evidence for a non-monotonic relation between EW_0(Hb+[OIII]) and SFR, such that both parameters correlate with each other at SFR > 1 Msun/yr, while the correlation flattens out at lower SFRs. This suggests that low metallicities producing high EW_0(Hb+[OIII]) could be important at low SFR values. Interestingly, the properties of the strong emitters and other galaxies (33% and 67% of our z=5.5-7 sample, respectively) are similar, including, in many cases, high sSFR. Therefore, it is crucial to consider both emitters and non-emitters to obtain a complete picture of the cosmic star formation activity around the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. The inner hundred parsecs of the Milky Way hosts the nearest supermassive black hole, largest reservoir of dense gas, greatest stellar density, hundreds of massive main and post main sequence stars, and the highest volume density of supernovae in the Galaxy. As the nearest environment in which it is possible to simultaneously observe many of the extreme processes shaping the Universe, it is one of the most well-studied regions in astrophysics. Due to its proximity, we can study the center of our Galaxy on scales down to a few hundred AU, a hundred times better than in similar Local Group galaxies and thousands of times better than in the nearest active galaxies. The Galactic Center (GC) is therefore of outstanding astrophysical interest. However, in spite of intense observational work over the past decades, there are still fundamental things unknown about the GC. JWST has the unique capability to provide us with the necessary, game-changing data. In this White Paper, we advocate for a JWST NIRCam survey that aims at solving central questions, that we have identified as a community: i) the 3D structure and kinematics of gas and stars; ii) ancient star formation and its relation with the overall history of the Milky Way, as well as recent star formation and its implications for the overall energetics of our galaxy's nucleus; and iii) the (non-)universality of star formation and the stellar initial mass function. We advocate for a large-area, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength NIRCam survey of the inner 100\,pc of the Galaxy in the form of a Treasury GO JWST Large Program that is open to the community. We describe how this survey will derive the physical and kinematic properties of ~10,000,000 stars, how this will solve the key unknowns and provide a valuable resource for the community with long-lasting legacy value., Comment: This White Paper will be updated when required (e.g. new authors joining, editing of content). A detailed analysis of the Nuclear Stellar Cluster (NSC) concedes not only the existence of the Scluster with its fast-moving stars and the supermassive black hole (SMBH) Sgr A*. It also reveals an embedded region of gas and dust with an exceptionally high stellar density called IRS 13. The IRS 13 cluster can be divided into the northern and the eastern counterparts, called IRS 13N and IRS 13E, respectively. This work will focus on both regions and study their most prominent members using rich infrared and radio/submm data baselines. Applying a multiwavelength analysis enables us to determine a comprehensive photometric footprint of the investigated cluster sample. Using the raytracing-based radiative transfer model HYPERION, the spectral energy distribution of the IRS 13 members suggests a stellar nature of the dusty sources. These putative Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) have a comparable spectroscopic identification to the D and G sources in or near the S cluster. Furthermore, we report the existence of a population of dusty sources in IRS 13 that can be mostly identified in the H-, K-, and Lband. Together with the objects reported in literature, we propose that this population is the outcome of a recent star formation process. Furthermore, we report that these presumably young objects are arranged in a disk structure. Although it cannot be excluded that the intrinsic arrangement of IRS 13 does show a disk structure, we find indications that the investigated cluster sample might be related to the counterclockwise disk., Comment: 59 pages, 44 figures, accepted and published by the ApJ

We study the stellar population properties of 182 spectroscopically-confirmed (MUSE/VLT) Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) and 450 photometrically-selected Lyman-Break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2.8 - 6.7 in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF). Leveraging the combined power of HST and JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations, we analyse their rest-frame UV-through-near-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with MIRI playing a crucial role in robustly assessing the LAE's stellar mass and ages. Our LAEs are low-mass objects (log$_{10}$(M$_\star$[M$_\odot$]) ~ 7.5), with little or no dust extinction (E(B - V) ~ 0.1) and a blue UV continuum slope ($\beta$ ~ -2.2). While 75% of our LAEs are young (< 100 Myr), the remaining 25% have significantly older stellar populations (> 100 Myr). These old LAEs are statistically more massive, less extinct and have lower specific star formation rate (sSFR) compared to young LAEs. Besides, they populate the M$_\star$ - SFR plane along the main-sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies, while young LAEs populate the starburst region. The comparison between the LAEs properties to those of a stellar-mass matched sample of LBGs shows no statistical difference between these objects, except for the LBGs redder UV continuum slope and marginally larger E(B - V) values. Interestingly, 48% of the LBGs have ages < 10 Myr and are classified as starbursts, but lack detectable Ly$\alpha$ emission. This is likely due to HI resonant scattering and/or selective dust extinction. Overall, we find that JWST observations are crucial in determining the properties of LAEs and shedding light on the properties and similarities between LAEs and LBGs., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. We present deep James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/MIRI F560W observations of a flux-limited, ALMA-selected sample of 28 galaxies at z=0.5-3.6 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). The data from the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) reveal the stellar structure of the HUDF galaxies at rest-wavelengths of >1 micron for the first time. We revise the stellar mass estimates using new JWST photometry and find good agreement with pre-JWST analysis; the few discrepancies can be explained by blending issues in the earlier lower-resolution Spitzer data. At z~2.5, the resolved rest-frame near-infrared (1.6 micron) structure of the galaxies is significantly more smooth and centrally concentrated than seen by HST at rest-frame 450 nm (F160W), with effective radii of Re(F560W)=1-5 kpc and S\'ersic indices mostly close to an exponential (disk-like) profile (n~1), up to n~5 (excluding AGN). We find an average size ratio of Re(F560W)/Re(F160W)~0.7 that decreases with stellar mass. The stellar structure of the ALMA-selected galaxies is indistinguishable from a HUDF reference sample of galaxies with comparable MIRI flux density. We supplement our analysis with custom-made, position-dependent, empirical PSF models for the F560W observations. The results imply that a smoother stellar structure is in place in massive gas-rich, star-forming galaxies at Cosmic Noon, despite a more clumpy rest-frame optical appearance, placing additional constraints on galaxy formation simulations. We present a JWST/MRS spectrum of the quasar J1120+0641 at z=7.0848, the first spectroscopic observation of a reionisation-era quasar in the rest-frame infrared ($0.6<\lambda<3.4\mu$m). In the context of the mysterious fast assembly of the first supermassive black holes at z>7, our observations enable for the first time the detection of hot torus dust, the H$\alpha$ emission line, and the Paschen-series broad emission lines in a quasar at z>7. Hot torus dust is clearly detected as an upturn in the continuum emission at $\lambda_{\text{rest}}\simeq1.3\mu$m, leading to a black-body temperature of $T=1413.5^{+5.7}_{-7.4}$K. Compared to similarly-luminous quasars at 06 ($2\sigma$ significance). We measure the black hole mass of J1120+0641 based on the H$\alpha$ Balmer line, $M_{\text{BH}}=1.52\pm0.17\cdot 10^9 M_\odot$, which is in good agreement with the previous rest-UV MgII black hole mass measurement. The black hole mass based on the Paschen-series lines is also consistent, indicating no significant extinction in the rest-frame UV measurement. The broad H$\alpha$, Pa-$\alpha$ and Pa-$\beta$ emission lines are consistent with an origin in a common broad-line region (BLR) with density log$N_H/\text{cm}^{-3}\geq 12$, ionisation parameter $-7<$log$U<-4$, and extinction E(B-V)$\lesssim 0.1$mag. We advocate for a Galactic center (GC) field to be added to the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey (GBTDS). The new field would yield high-cadence photometric and astrometric measurements of an unprecedented ${\sim}$3.3 million stars toward the GC. This would enable a wide range of science cases, such as finding star-compact object binaries that may ultimately merge as LISA-detectable gravitational wave sources, constraining the mass function of stars and compact objects in different environments, detecting populations of microlensing and transiting exoplanets, studying stellar flares and variability in young and old stars, and monitoring accretion onto the central supermassive black hole. In addition, high-precision proper motions and parallaxes would open a new window into the large-scale dynamics of stellar populations at the GC, yielding insights into the formation and evolution of galactic nuclei and their co-evolution with the growth of the supermassive black hole. We discuss the possible trade-offs between the notional GBTDS and the addition of a GC field with either an optimal or minimal cadence. Ultimately, the addition of a GC field to the GBTDS would dramatically increase the science return of Roman and provide a legacy dataset to study the mid-plane and innermost regions of our Galaxy., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures. To date, the proposed observation of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the Galactic center (GC) still raises the question where and how these objects could have formed due to the violent vicinity of Sgr~A*. Here, we report the multi-wavelength detection of a highly dynamic YSO close to Sgr~A* that might be a member of the IRS13 cluster. We observe the beforehand known coreless bow-shock source X3 in the near- and mid-infrared (NIR/MIR) with SINFONI (VLT), NACO (VLT), ISAAC (VLT), VISIR (VLT), SHARP (NTT), and NIRCAM2 (KECK). In the radio domain, we use CO continuum and H30$\alpha$ ALMA observations to identify system components at different temperatures and locations concerning the central stellar source. It is suggested that these radio/submm observations in combination with the NIR Br$\gamma$ line can be associated with a protoplanetary disk of the YSO which is consistent with manifold VISIR observations that reveal complex molecules and elements such as PAH, SIV, NeII and ArIII in a dense and compact region. Based on the photometric multi-wavelength analysis, we infer the mass of $15^{+10}_{-5} M_{\odot}$ for the YSO with a related age of a few $10^4$ yr. Due to this age estimate and the required relaxation time scales for high-mass stars, this finding is an indication for ongoing star formation in the inner parsec. The proper motion and 3d distance imply a relation of X3 and IRS13. We present the ultraviolet luminosity function and an estimate of the cosmic star formation rate density at $88$ galaxy candidates based on their dropout nature in the F115W and/or F150W filters, a high probability for their photometric redshifts, estimated with three different codes, being at $z>8$, good fits based on $\chi^2$ calculations, and predominant solutions compared to $z<8$ alternatives. We find mild evolution in the luminosity function from $z\sim13$ to $z\sim8$, i.e., only a small increase in the average number density of $\sim$0.2 dex, while the faint-end slope and absolute magnitude of the knee remain approximately constant, with values $\alpha=-2.2\pm0.1$ and $M^*=-20.8\pm0.2$ mag. Comparing our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art galaxy evolution models, we find two main results: (1) a slower increase with time in the cosmic star formation rate density compared to a steeper rise predicted by models; (2) nearly a factor of 10 higher star formation activity concentrated in scales around 2 kpc in galaxies with stellar masses $\sim10^8$ M$_\odot$ during the first 350 Myr of the Universe, $z\sim12$, with models matching better the luminosity density observational estimations $\sim$150 Myr later, by $z\sim9$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, in memoriam Hans Ulrik Noorgaard-Nielsen and Olivier Le F\`evre

The ongoing monitoring of the Galactic center and Sgr A*, the central supermassive black hole, produces surprising and unexpected findings. This goes hand in hand with the technical evolution of ground- and space-based telescopes and instruments, but also with the progression of image filter techniques such as the Lucy Richardson algorithm. As we continue to trace the members of the S cluster close to Sgr A* on their expected trajectory around the supermassive black hole, we present the finding of a new stellar source, which we call S4716. The newly found star orbits SgrA* in about 4.0 yr and can be detected with NIRC2 (Keck), OSIRIS (Keck), SINFONI (VLT), NACO (VLT), and GRAVITY (VLTI). With a periapse distance of about 100 au, S4716 shows an equivalent distance toward Sgr A* as S4711. These fast-moving stars undergo a similar dynamical evolution, since S4711-S4716 share comparable orbital properties. We will furthermore draw a connection between the recent finding of a new faint star called S300 and the data presented here. Mid-Infrared (MIR) images of the Galactic center show extended gas and dust features along with bright IRS sources. Some of these dust features are a part of ionized clumpy streamers orbiting Sgr~A*, known as the mini-spiral. We present their proper motions over 12 year time period and report their flux densities in $N$-band filters {and derive their spectral indices}. The observations were carried out by VISIR at ESO VLT. High-pass filtering led to the detection of several resolved filaments and clumps along the mini-spiral. Each source was fit by a 2-D Gaussian profile to determine the offsets and aperture sizes. We perform aperture photometry to extract fluxes in two different bands. We present the proper motions of the largest consistent set of resolved and reliably determined sources. In addition to stellar orbital motions, we identify a stream-like motion of extended clumps along the mini-spiral. We also detect MIR counterparts of the radio tail components of the IRS7 source. They show a clear kinematical deviation with respect to the star. They likely represent Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities formed downstream in the shocked stellar wind. We also analyze the shape and the orientation of the extended late-type IRS3 star that is consistent with the ALMA sub-mm detection of the source. Its puffed-up envelope with the radius of $\sim 2\times 10^6\,R_{\odot}$ could be the result of the red-giant collision with a nuclear jet, which was followed by the tidal prolongation along the orbit., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The observations of the near-infrared excess object G2/DSO induced an increased attention towards the Galactic center and its vicinity. The predicted flaring event in 2014 and the outcome of the intense monitoring of the supermassive black hole in the center of our Galaxy did not fulfill all predictions about a significantly enhanced accretion event. Subsequent observations furthermore addressed the question concerning the nature of the object because of its compact shape, especially during its periapse in 2014. Theoretical approaches have attempted to answer the contradicting behavior of the object, resisting the expected dissolution of a gaseous cloud due to tidal forces in combination with evaporation and hydrodynamical instabilities. However, assuming that the object is rather a dust-enshrouded young stellar object seems to be in line with the predictions of several groups and observations presented in numerous publications. Here we present a detailed overview and analysis of the observations of the object that have been performed with SINFONI (VLT) and provide a comprehensive approach to clarify the nature of G2/DSO. We show that the tail emission consists of two isolated and compact sources with different orbital elements for each source rather than an extended and stretched component as it appeared in previous representations of the same data. Considering our recent publications, we propose that the monitored dust-enshrouded objects are remnants of a dissolved young stellar cluster whose formation was initiated in the Circum-nuclear Disk. Given the increased attention towards the detection of faint stars in the Galactic center, we would like to address the detectability of S62 in its apoapsis with SINFONI (VLT) and NIRC2 (KECK) in this work. Because of the nearby stars and the chance of confusion, we are using Lucy-Richardson deconvolved images to detect S62 on its Keplerian orbit around Sgr~A* with a period of less than 10 years. We use the same dataset as for S62 to trace additionally the S-cluster star S29 at the expected position based on the orbital elements presented in this work. To verify the results of the filtering technique, we are analysing K-band continuum data of the same epoch independently observed with NIRC2/KECK. Based on the well-derived orbit of S62, we find the star in projection at the expected position in 2019.4 and 2019.5. By analyzing the SINFONI data of 2019.5, we confirm the $16.1\,\pm\,0.2$ mag for S62 that was formerly derived with NACO (VLT). We base our NACO imaging analysis on the robust data set that was previously used to investigate the Schwarzschild precision of S2. We also present a critical discussion of the elsewhere proposed linear trajectory of S62 and its disputed identification with a 19 mag star found with GRAVITY mounted at the VLT Interferometer., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, published at ApJ

Several publications highlight the importance of the observations of bow shocks to learn more about the surrounding interstellar medium and radiation field. We revisit the most prominent dusty and gaseous bow shock source, X7, close to the supermassive black hole, Sgr~A*, using multiwavelength analysis. For the purpose of this study, we use SINFONI (H+K-band) and NACO ($L'$- and $M'$-band) data-sets between 2002 and 2018 with additional COMIC/ADONIS+RASOIR ($L'$-band) data of 1999. By analyzing the line maps of SINFONI, we identify a velocity of $\sim 200$ km/s from the tip to the tail. Furthermore, a combination of the multiwavelength data of NACO and SINFONI in the $H$-, $K$-, $L'$-, and $M'$-band results in a two-component black-body fit that implies that X7 is a dust-enshrouded stellar object. The observed ongoing elongation and orientation of X7 in the Br$\gamma$ line maps and the NACO $L'$-band continuum indicate a wind arising at the position of Sgr~A* or at the IRS16 complex. Observations after 2010 show that the dust and the gas shell seems to be decoupled in projection from its stellar source S50. The data also implies that the tail of X7 gets thermally heated up due to the presence of S50. The gas emission at the tip is excited because of the related forward scattering (Mie-scattering), which will continue to influence the shape of X7 in the near future. We present high-pass filtered NACO and SINFONI images of the newly discovered stars S4711-S4715 between 2004 and 2016. Our deep H+K-band (SINFONI) and K-band (NACO) data show the S-cluster star S4711 on a highly eccentric trajectory around Sgr~A* with an orbital period of 7.6 years and a periapse distance of 144 AU to the super massive black hole (SMBH). S4711 is hereby the star with the shortest orbital period and the smallest mean distance to the SMBH during its orbit to date. The used high-pass filtered images are based on co-added data sets to improve the signal to noise. The spectroscopic SINFONI data let us determine detailed stellar properties of S4711 like the mass and the rotational velocity. The faint S-cluster star candidates, S4712-S4715, can be observed in a projected distance to Sgr~A* of at least temporarily $\leq$ 120 mas. From these stars, S4714 is the most prominent one with an orbital period of 12 years and an eccentricity of 0.985. The stars S4712-S4715 show similar properties with comparable magnitudes and stellar masses to S4711. The MCMC simulations determine confidently precise uncertainties for the orbital elements of S62 and S4711-S4715. The presence of S4711 in addition to S55, S62, and the also newly found star S4714 implies a population of faint stars that can be found at distances to Sgr~A* that are comparable to the size of our solar system. These short orbital time period stars in the dense cluster around the SMBH in the center of our Galaxy are perfect candidates to observe gravitational effects such as the periapse shift., Comment: 23 pages, accepted and published bei ApJ

We present a detailed analysis of the kinematics of 112 stars that mostly comprise the high velocity S-cluster and orbit the super massive black hole SgrA* at the center of the Milky Way. For 39 of them orbital elements are known, for the remainder we know proper motions. The distribution of inclinations, and proper motion flight directions deviate significantly from a uniform distribution which one expects if the orientation of the orbits are random. Across the central arcseconds the S-cluster stars are arranged in two almost edge on disks that are located at a position angle approximately +-45 o with respect to the Galactic plane. The angular momentum vectors for stars in each disk point in both directions, i.e. the stars in a given disk rotate in opposite ways. The poles of this structure are located only about 25 o from the line of sight. This structure may be the result of a resonance process that started with the formation of the young B-dwarf stars in the cluster about 6 Myr ago. We analyze the gas and dust emission in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole Sgr~A* at the Galactic center (GC) with the ESO VLT (Paranal/Chile) instruments SINFONI and VISIR. The SINFONI H+K data cubes show several emission lines with related line map counterparts. From these lines, the Br$\gamma$ emission is the most prominent one and appears to be shaped as a bar extending along the North-South direction. With VISIR, we find a dusty counterpart to this filamentary emission. In this work, we present evidence that this feature can be most likely connected to the mini-spiral and potentially influenced by the winds of the massive stars in the central cluster or an accretion wind from Sgr~A*. To this end, we co-add the SINFONI data between 2005 and 2015. The spectroscopic analysis reveals a range of Doppler-shifted emission lines. We also detect substructures in the shape of clumps that can be investigated in the channel maps of the Br$\gamma$-bar. In addition, we compare the detection of the near-infrared (NIR) Br$\gamma$ feature to PAH1 mid-infrared (MIR) observations and published 226 GHz radio data. These clumps show a proper motion of about $320$km/s that are consistent with other infrared continuum detected filaments in the Galactic center. Deriving a mass of $2.5\,\times\,10^{-5}\,M_{\odot}$ for the investigated Br$\gamma$-feature shows an agreement with former derived masses for similar objects. Besides the North-South Br$\gamma$-bar, we find a comparable additional East-West feature. We observe the S-cluster star S62 on its Keplerian orbit around the supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy, SgrA*. The orbital time period of S62 around SgrA* is 9.9 years. We derive its mass to be around 2 M_solar which is consistent with other members of the S-cluster. From the Lucy-Richardson deconvolved images, we determine a K-band magnitude of 16.1 mag. We observe almost two complete orbits of the star with two different and independent telescopes and three different instruments. The close distance of S62 to SgrA* at its periapse of around 2 mas results in a gravitational periapse shift of almost 10%/orbit., Comment: 18 pages, accepted and published by ApJ

The Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO/G2) orbiting the supermassive black hole (Sgr A*) in the Galactic centre has been monitored in both near-infrared continuum and line emission. There has been a dispute about the character and the compactness of the object: interpreting it as either a gas cloud or a dust-enshrouded star. A recent analysis of polarimetry data in $K_{\rm s}$-band ($2.2\,{\rm \mu m}$) allows us to put further constraints on the geometry of the DSO. The purpose of this paper is to constrain the nature and the geometry of the DSO. We compare 3D radiative transfer models of the DSO with the NIR continuum data including polarimetry. In the analysis, we use basic dust continuum radiative transfer theory implemented in the 3D Monte Carlo code Hyperion. Moreover, we implement analytical results of the two-body problem mechanics and the theory of non-thermal processes. We present a composite model of the DSO -- a dust-enshrouded star that consists of a stellar source, dusty, optically thick envelope, bipolar cavities, and a bow shock. This scheme can match the NIR total as well as polarized properties of the observed spectral energy distribution (SED). The SED may be also explained in theory by a young pulsar wind nebula that typically exhibits a large linear polarization degree due to magnetospheric synchrotron emission. The analysis of NIR polarimetry data combined with the radiative transfer modelling shows that the DSO is a peculiar source of compact nature in the S cluster $(r \lesssim 0.04\,{\rm pc})$. It is most probably a young stellar object embedded in a non-spherical dusty envelope, whose components include optically thick dusty envelope, bipolar cavities, and a bow shock. A peculiar source in the Galactic center known as the Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO/G2) moves on a highly eccentric orbit around the supermassive black hole with the pericenter passage in the spring of 2014. Its nature has been uncertain mainly because of the lack of any information about its intrinsic geometry. For the first time, we use near-infrared polarimetric imaging data to obtain constraints about the geometrical properties of the DSO. We find out that DSO is an intrinsically polarized source, based on the significance analysis of polarization parameters, with the degree of the polarization of $\sim 30\%$ and an alternating polarization angle as it approaches the position of Sgr A*. Based on the monitoring of the Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO/G2) during its closest approach to the Galactic Center supermassive black hole in 2014 and 2015 with ESO VLT/SINFONI, we further explore the model of a young, accreting star to explain observed spectral and morphological features. The stellar scenario is supported by our findings, i.e. ionized-hydrogen emission from the DSO that remains spatially compact before and after the peribothron passage. The detection of DSO/G2 object as a compact single-peak emission-line source is not consistent with the original hypothesis of a core-less cloud that is necessarily tidally stretched, hence producing a double-peak emission line profile around the pericentre passage. This strengthens the evidence that the DSO/G2 source is a dust-enshrouded young star that appears to be in an accretion phase.
