Abstract

We study the high-energy behavior of the elastic scattering amplitude using two distinct unitarization schemes: the eikonal and the $U$-matrix. Our analysis begins with a formalism involving solely Pomerons, incorporating pion-loop insertions in the Pomeron trajectory representing the nearest singularity generated by $t$-channel unitarity. Subsequently, we explore a scenario that includes the presence of an Odderon. In our analyses, we explore the tension between the TOTEM and the ATLAS measurements for $\sigma_{tot}$ and $d\sigma/dt$ at 7, 8, and 13 TeV, and the subsequent implications for the properties of both the Pomeron and Odderon. Our results show that the Odderon phase factor $\xi_{\Bbb O}= -1$ is favored in both unitarization schemes, supporting an Odderon with a phase opposite to that of other crossing-odd components of the scattering amplitude. More interestingly, this specific phase factor stands as the sole one that aligns with results consistent with a non-zero Odderon coupling., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables, version to be published in Phys. Abstract

We investigate the two-gluon-exchange model of the Pomeron using nonperturbative gluon propagators characterized by a dynamical mass scale. We present the results for an analysis of the available $pp$ differential cross section data at TeV energies which accounts for dynamical gluon masses obtained from a non-linear version of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. We show that our two-gluon exchange model gives a very good description of the LHC data, provided we demand the Reggeization of the scattering amplitude and make a suitable choice for the convolution of proton wave functions., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, text improved, references added. 5. Soft Pomeron in light of the LHC correlated data

Abstract

The LHC has released precise measurements of elastic proton-proton scattering that provide a unique constraint on the asymptotic behavior of the scattering amplitude at high energies. Recent reanalyses of part of these data indicate that the central values of some forward quantities would be different than initially observed. We introduce correlation information between the original and the reanalyzed data sets in a way suitable for a global fitting analysis of all data. The careful treatment of correlated errors leads to much less stringent limits on the $\rho$ uncertainty and sets up the stage for describing the forward data using a scattering amplitude dominated by only crossing-even terms. In the light of these correlated data we determine the parameters of the soft Pomeron from the Regge theory. We use Born-level and eikonalized amplitudes. In the Born-level case we estimate the contribution of the double Pomeron exchange, while in the latter case we investigate the role of the eikonalization in both the one- and two-channel models. The role of the proton-Pomeron vertex form and of the nearest $t$-channel singularity in the Pomeron trajectory receives particular attention. We discuss the implications of our results and present predictions for the total cross section and the $\rho$ parameter in proton-proton collisions at LHC and cosmic ray energies., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, minor typos fixed. Abstract

We consider the effect of higher twist operators of the Wilson operator product expansion in the structure function $F_{2}(x,Q^{2})$ at small-$x$, taking into account QCD effective charges whose infrared behavior is constrained by a dynamical mass scale. The higher twist corrections are obtained from the renormalon formalism. Our analysis is performed within the conventional framework of next-to-leading order, with the factorization and renormalization scales chosen to be $Q^{2}$. The infrared properties of QCD are treated in the context of the generalized double-asymptotic-scaling approximation. We show that the corrections to $F_{2}$ associated with twist-four and twist-six are both necessary and sufficient for a good description of the deep infrared experimental data., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, text improved, references added, gluon distribution function calculated. 7. Exclusive production of pions and the pion distribution amplitude

Abstract

Considering, as a limit case, an approximately flat pion distribution amplitude, which is determined from the hardest, in momentum space, solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the pion wave function, we compute the pion transition form factor $F_{\pi\gamma\gamma^{*}}(Q^{2})$ and the pion form factor $F_{\pi}(Q^2)$, taking into account the LO as well as NLO form of the hard coefficient function entering the leading-twist factorization formula. We also compute the exclusive photoproduction of pions pairs at high energies, $\gamma \gamma \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, where perturbative QCD can be used to compute the hard scattering matrix elements. Previous studies that have explored predictors of low adherence to exercise during pregnancy have not examined group-based settings. We analysed an international cohort of 347 pregnant women who participated in group-based prenatal exercise interventions (from <20 weeks to 34–36 weeks pregnant). Probable adherence predictors informed by previous literature that were assessed included: pre-pregnancy physical activity level and body mass index (BMI) classification, age, number of previous pregnancies, and education level. Adherence was measured by attendance. Adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to explore the relationship between the selected predictors and high adherence (≥70%). Post-secondary education level versus only secondary (aOR 5.28; CI 1.67; 16.72) or primary level (aOR 13.82; CI 4.30; 44.45) presented greater likelihood to have high adherence to the exercise intervention than low adherence. We aimed to analyze the prevalence--and potential sociodemographic and medical predictors of--non-responsiveness to gestational exercise, and the association of non-responsiveness with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Among 688 women who completed a supervised light-to-moderate intensity exercise program (three ~1-h sessions/week including aerobic, resistance, and pelvic floor muscle training) until near-term, those who showed EGWG, GDM or GH were considered 'non-responders'. A low prevalence of non-responders was observed for GDM (3.6%) and GH (3.4%), but not for EGWG (24.2%). Pre-pregnancy obesity was the strongest predictor of non-responsiveness for GH (odds ratio 8.40 [95% confidence interval 3.10-22.78] and EGWG (5.37 [2.78-10.39]), whereas having a highest education level attenuated the risk of being non-responder for GDM (0.10 [0.02-0.49]). Non-responsiveness for EGWG was associated with a higher risk of prolonged labor length, instrumental/cesarean delivery, and macrosomia, and of lower Apgar scores. No association with negative delivery outcomes was found for GDM/GH. Abstract

La dermatitis atópica (DA), patología inflamatoria de la piel, es una enfermedad de distribución mundial, con una elevada prevalencia en los países desarrollados, lo que la ha convertido en una prioridad de salud.1 Su prevalencia se ha duplicado en las dos últimas décadas, sobre todo en países industrializados donde afecta hasta el 30% de la población infantil y 10% de los adultos.2,3 El tratamiento es amplio, siendo muy frecuente la falta de adherencia al mismo. Estudios recientes han demostrado que la forma activa de vitamina D podría ejercer efectos beneficiosos4 permitiendo la recuperación de la integridad de la barrera epidérmica.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and technology, society demands young generations of citizens able to work in a kind of environment characterized by complexity and diversity. Therefore, the education system faces a new kind of challenge, as graduates are reported to need transversal skills, which are unlikely to be learned through traditional classroom teaching. The overall aim of this article is to examine the needs for these skills and their acquisition by higher education teachers to cope with the evolving European labour market of the 2020s. The article envisions the importance of soft skills in the teaching profession. The empirical part consists of a comparative study with Italian and Portuguese teachers, highlighting the status of a set of crucial soft skills (assertiveness, networking skills, teamwork, sensitivity, socialization, action-orientation, ability to work under pressure and social desirability)

Previous studies that have explored predictors of low adherence to exercise during pregnancy have not examined group-based settings. We analysed an international cohort of 347 pregnant women who participated in group-based prenatal exercise interventions (from <20 weeks to 34–36 weeks pregnant). Probable adherence predictors informed by previous literature that were assessed included: pre-pregnancy physical activity level and body mass index (BMI) classification, age, number of previous pregnancies, and education level. Adherence was measured by attendance. Adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to explore the relationship between the selected predictors and high adherence (≥70%). Post-secondary education level versus only secondary (aOR 5.28; CI 1.67; 16.72) or primary level (aOR 13.82; CI 4.30; 44.45) presented greater likelihood to have high adherence to the exercise intervention than low adherence. 28. Moss cover and browsing scores as sustainability indicators of mountain ungulate populations in Mediterranean environments

Abstract

Here, we aimed to define ecological indicators of environmental change for monitoring the effect of a reintroduced species, the Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica), over the vegetation of a natural protected area with contrasting habitats. This species was reintroduced 30 years ago in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, Spain, and its population has since grown exponentially, reaching high densities in some areas. We tested the suitability of two complementary indicators: browsing damage on woody species and the percentage of moss cover loss on rocky outcrops. For this purpose, we used a mathematical approach to zone the natural protected area according to the historical presence of the species and established five different Iberian ibex pressure classes (Classes I–V). Our results showed a direct link between Iberian ibex pressure and vegetation status. Model predictions suggested 10% moss loss in the areas with low pressure (Class I) but 64% loss in the areas with high pressure (Class III), mostly due to ungulate trampling on rocks. Similarly, browsing damage increased with increasing pressure classes for different woody species. Low palatable plant species such as Pinus spp. showed little change in browsing damage for increasing ungulate pressure whereas more palatable plants (e.g., Erica arborea) showed significantly greater browsing damage variation across pressure classes (i.e., high sensitive to herbivory pressure). Both, moss cover on rocks and widely distributed palatable woody plants proved useful ecological indicators for monitoring ungulate populations in mountainous areas with a diverse array of habitats (e.g., rocky vs. woody). This methodology may help select the most suitable indicators for each type of ecosystem or dominant habitat in ungulate-dominated ecosystems., En este trabajo se pretende definir indicadores ecológicos de cambio ambiental para monitorizar el efecto de una especie reintroducida, la cabra montés (Capra pyrenaica), sobre la vegetación de un espacio natural protegido. Esta especie fue reintroducida hace 30 años en el Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama, España, y desde entonces su población ha crecido exponencialmente, alcanzando altas densidades en algunas zonas. Se comprobó la idoneidad de dos indicadores complementarios: los daños por ramoneo en especies leñosas y el porcentaje de pérdida de cobertura de musgo en afloramientos rocosos. Para ello, utilizamos una aproximación matemática para zonificar el espacio natural protegido en función de la presencia histórica de la especie y establecimos cinco clases diferentes de presión de la cabra montés ibérica (Clases I-V). Nuestros resultados mostraron una relación directa entre la presión de la cabra montés y el estado de la vegetación. Las predicciones del modelo sugerían una pérdida de musgo del 10% en las zonas con baja presión (Clase I) pero del 64% en las zonas con alta presión (Clase III), debido principalmente al pisoteo de rocas por parte de los ungulados. Del mismo modo, los daños causados por el ramoneo aumentaron con el incremento de las clases de presión para las diferentes especies leñosas. Las especies vegetales poco palatables, como Pinus spp., mostraron pocos cambios en los daños por ramoneo al aumentar la presión de los ungulados, mientras que las plantas más palatables (por ejemplo, Erica arborea) mostraron una variación significativamente mayor de los daños por ramoneo entre las clases de presión (es decir, alta sensibilidad a la presión herbívora). 34. QCD effective charges and the structure function At Small- : Higher twist effects

Abstract

We consider the effect of higher twist operators of the Wilson operator product expansion in the structure function F2(x,Q2) at small-x, taking into account QCD effective charges whose infrared behavior is constrained by a dynamical mass scale. The higher twist corrections are obtained from the renormalon formalism. Our analysis is performed within the conventional framework of next-to-leading order, with the factorization and renormalization scales chosen to be Q2. The infrared properties of QCD are treated in the context of the generalized double-asymptotic-scaling approximation. We show that the corrections to F2 associated with twist-four and twist-six are both necessary and sufficient for a good description of the deep infrared experimental data.

Abstract

Background: This study aims to evaluate the entire experience in heart-lung transplantation (HLTx) in a country of the European Union with 47 million inhabitants according to the etiologies that motivated the procedure. Methods: A retrospective study on 1,751 consecutive transplants (HLTx: 78) was performed from 1990 to 2020 in two centers. Overall survival, adjusted for clinical profile and etiological subgroups, was compared. 7 subgroups were considered: 1) Cardiomyopathy with pulmonary hypertension (CM + PH). 2) Eisenmenger syndrome. 3) Congenital heart disease (CHD). 4) Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH). 5) Cystic fibrosis. 6) Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)/Emphysema. 7) Diffuse interstitial lung disease (ILD). Results: Early mortality was 44% and that of the rest of the follow-up was 31%. There were differences between HTLx and HTx in survival, also comparing groups with a similar clinical profile with propensity score (p= 0.04). Median survival was low in CM + PH (18 days), ILD (29 days) and CHD (114 days), intermediate in Eisenmenger syndrome (600 days), and longer in IPAH, COPD/Emphysema and cystic fibrosis. Conclusion: HLTx has a high mortality. The etiological analysis is of the utmost interest to make the most of the organs and improve survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To prepare a list of highly toxic drugs in infants (HTDs) marketed in Spain, comparing those that reach the lethal dose in a child of 10kg with the ingestion of 1 to 3 units. METHOD: HTDs are defined as those capable of causing severe or lethal poisoning in children less than 8-year-old. Severe poisoning is considered as that corresponding to Grade 3 in the Poisoning Severity Score classification and to the "major effects" category in publications in the American Association of Poison Control Centers. A literature review was carried out on the annual reports of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, as well as in PubMed, between January 2000 and February 2019 (Keywords "severe", "fatal", "life-threatening", "poisoning", "child", "paediatric", "toxicological emergency"). An observational, retrospective study was also conducted on infants less than 8-year-old that were seen in a Paediatric Emergency Department due to suspected drug poisoning between July 2012 and June 2018. The active ingredients responsible marketed in Spain were selected, and the lethal or highly toxic doses were determined. The number of units (pills) necessary to reach this dose in children of 10kg was calculated. RESULTS: A total of 7 HTD groups were identified: analgesics; psychotropics and other medication used in neurological disorders; catarrh decongestants - cough -antihistamine - asthma drugs; cardiovascular drugs; antibiotics, topical preparations, and other drugs. In 29 active ingredients, the ingestion of a single pill could cause death in 10kg infant, in another 13, the ingestion of 2 pills could cause death, as well as the ingestion of 3 pills in 10 cases. CONCLUSION: There are numerous HTDs marketed in Spain, some of which are available in potentially fatal presentations with few pills.

We aimed to analyze the prevalence--and potential sociodemographic and medical predictors of--non-responsiveness to gestational exercise, and the association of non-responsiveness with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Among 688 women who completed a supervised light-to-moderate intensity exercise program (three ~1-h sessions/week including aerobic, resistance, and pelvic floor muscle training) until near-term, those who showed EGWG, GDM or GH were considered 'non-responders'. A low prevalence of non-responders was observed for GDM (3.6%) and GH (3.4%), but not for EGWG (24.2%). Pre-pregnancy obesity was the strongest predictor of non-responsiveness for GH (odds ratio 8.40 [95% confidence interval 3.10-22.78] and EGWG (5.37 [2.78-10.39]), whereas having a highest education level attenuated the risk of being non-responder for GDM (0.10 [0.02-0.49]). Non-responsiveness for EGWG was associated with a higher risk of prolonged labor length, instrumental/cesarean delivery, and macrosomia, and of lower Apgar scores. No association with negative delivery outcomes was found for GDM/GH. Abstract

Se realiza estudio mediante la técnica de Ziehl-Nelsen modificada por Henriksen, de las heces fecales de 1221 niños en busca de Cryptosporidium. Los resultados fueron: 1121 con diarreas agudas, 50 con diarreas crónicas, 50 con dolor abdominal recurrente. Se obtiene una positividad del 6,8% en los pacientes con diarreas agudas, 6% en los portadores de diarreas crónicas y 2% en niños con dolor abdominal recurrente; la mayor positividad fue en los niños menores de un año. Los vómitos y la fiebre son síntomas que acompañan con frecuencia a las diarreas por Cryptosporidium y sus ooquistes desaparecen de las muestras de heces fecales, en la mayoría de los casos, al desaparecer la diarrea o sólo unos días después.
