Ultra-intense lasers that ionize and accelerate electrons in solids to near the speed of light can lead to kinetic instabilities that alter the laser absorption and subsequent electron transport, isochoric heating, and ion acceleration. These instabilities can be difficult to characterize, but a novel approach using X-ray scattering at keV energies allows for their visualization with femtosecond temporal resolution on the few nanometer mesoscale. Our experiments on laser-driven flat silicon membranes show the development of structure with a dominant scale of $~60\unit{nm}$ in the plane of the laser axis and laser polarization, and $~95\unit{nm}$ in the vertical direction with a growth rate faster than $0.1/\mathrm{fs}$. Combining the XFEL experiments with simulations provides a complete picture of the structural evolution of ultra-fast laser-induced instability development, indicating the excitation of surface plasmons and the growth of a new type of filamentation instability. These findings provide new insight into the ultra-fast instability processes in solids under extreme conditions at the nanometer level with important implications for inertial confinement fusion and laboratory astrophysics.

The High Energy Density Science (HED) instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser Facility in Hamburg, Germany, is dedicated to the investigation of a wide range of materials and systems at extreme conditions of pressure, temperature, ionization or electro-magnetic field. For sample excitation a variety of high energy drivers will be installed at this instrument. Three separate optical laser systems will be available for warm- to hot-dense-matter creation, dynamic compression and laser-plasma interaction in electron-relativistic regime. These drivers will allow studying various phase space parameters with time-resolution down to 10 fs, pressures into the TPa regime, and electric field strength up to $10^{20}$ $W/cm^{2}$. In addition, a pulsed-magnet will provide magnetic fields up to 50-60 T. This unique instrument is designed to enable the application of various x-ray probes including spectroscopic, diffraction and imaging methods. It will operate in the photon energy range from 3 to above 20 keV and will feature a variety of platforms facilitating the usage of different techniques in user-driven experiments. Due to the often non-reversible extreme excitation of the samples automated sample replacement schemes will have to be employed.Being on the baseline instrument of European XFEL, first user experiments are planned for 2017. The installation of the high energy and high intensity lasers as well as of the pulsed magnets will be available through contributions by the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HIBEF) User Consortium.Capabilities planned for the HED instrument together with several science cases are presented.

The High Energy Density science instrument (HED) at the European XFEL, Hamburg, Germany will provide unique experimental possibilities for the investigation of near solid material driven to extreme states and will also establish a new platform to study materials response to shock compression. HED is located at the SASE2 undulator, which provides up to 27000 pulses per second with about $10^{12}$ photons per pulse, photon energies between 3 and 24 keV and pulse lengths of 2 – 100 fs. Self-seeding is foreseen, as well as natural bandwidth (BW) SASE radiation. In addition, energy BW of $10^{-4}$ and $10^{-6}$ will be available through monochromators. Focussing is based on CRL optics, which will allow to provide beam sizes of 2 μm, 10-20 μm and 150 – 260 μm at the sample position. Samples will be driven to extreme states by different types of optical lasers (either 200 kHz/3 mJ/15 fs, 10 Hz/100 TW/30 fs or 10 Hz/100J/ns), the pump-probe FEL beam (delays of up to 2 -23 ps for 5 -20 keV using a split-and-delay unit) and pulsed magnetic fields (up to 50 T). Pump probe experiments can be performed at adapted repetition rates (4.5 MHz, 1 – 10 Hz, single shot). X-ray techniques comprise diffraction, imaging and spectroscopic methods. User operation is planned for fall 2017. We will present the science case of HED, the current layout and present ideas on first shock compression experiments

Free-electron laser facilities enable new applications in the field of high-pressure research including geo- and planetary sciences. At the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) in Hamburg, one of the six baseline instruments is dedicated to High Energy Density Science (HED). A 100 J optical laser with nanosecond pulse duration, high repetition rate and pulse shaping option will be integrated at this instrument, which will allow to shock compressing matter to very high internal pressures of up to 1 TPa and to off-Hugoniot states at lower pressures with ramped compression. This will enable to mimic conditions similar to the interior of Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Earth and Venus. The extreme states of matter can then be probed with the FEL X-ray source. At European XFEL hard X-rays with photon energies of up to 25 keV will be available. At the HED instrument, several X-ray techniques will be realized to probe the samples such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray imaging and spectroscopy including XANES. The high intensity and time structure of the FEL beam will enable time-resolved pump-probe studies of the samples generated during dynamic compression. The envisaged instrument time resolution is in the range of a few 10s fs which is well below the time scales of phase transitions. In addition, the high brilliance and coherence of the FEL radiation will allow spatially resolved studies. The HED instrument is currently in its detailed design phase and first user operation is foreseen for late 2017. In this contribution, we will present the capabilities of the HED instrument with respect to geo- and planetary sciences, compare this to state-of-the-art in-situ techniques and will show planned first experiments of this instrument.

Free-electron laser facilities provide new applications in the field of high-pressure research including planetary materials. The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) in Hamburg will start user operation in 2017 and will provide photon energies of up to 25 keV. With a photon flux of about $10^{12}$ photons/pulse, with a pulse duration of 2–100 fs and a repetition rate of up to 4.5 MHz during 600 μs long bursts with a repetition rate of 10 Hz, rendering up to 27000 pulses per second, this facility will provide unique opportunities to study material under extreme conditions. The high-energy density science instrument (HED) is one of the six baseline instruments at the European XFEL. It enables the study of dense material at strong excitation and high pressures, studying structural and electronic properties of excited states with hard x-rays. Besides the use of the x-ray FEL beam as a possible pump and/or probe, it will be equipped with a high contrast PW-class ultra-high power, a temporal shaped ultra-high energy, KJ-class and amJ-class MHz repetition rate, matching the X-ray burst structure, laser facility. Probing of the laser-generated excited states will be performed with the x-ray free electron laser.

Die Untersuchung exotischer, instabiler Materiezustände ist eine zentrale Aufgabe der modernen Experimentalphysik. Diese Zustände treten auf der Erde selten auf, spielen aber eine wichtige Rolle bei verschiedenen astrophysikalischen Vorgängen und sind für Entwicklungen im Bereich der Trägheitsfusion von großer Bedeutung. In dieser Arbeit wurde das Verhalten von Materie bei hoher Dichte und moderater Temperatur untersucht. Hierzu wurde Röntgenthomsonstreuung bei zwei verschiedenen Experimenten als Diagnostik eingesetzt. Das erste Experiment behandelte die Dynamik des Zustandes von Lithiumfolien, die durch Laserpulse schockkomprimiert und geheizt wurden. Um eine möglichst homogene Kompression zu erreichen, kamen hierzu zwei Laserpulse zum Einsatz, die symmetrisch von beiden Seiten mit einer Intensität von 2.7*10^12 W/cm^2 und Pulsdauern von 4 ns auf Folien einer Dicke von 50 μm gelenkt wurden. Bei diesem Aufbau kann eine hohe Kompression erreicht werden, da sich, nach der Vorhersage hydrodynamischer Simulationen, die Schockwellen nach etwa 1.2 ns überlagern während sie noch durch die Heizlaser getrieben werden. Als Röntgenquelle für die Streudiagnostik wurde durch separate Laserpulse mit Pulsdauern von 1 ns ein Chlorplasma erzeugt, das Lyman-alpha-Strahlung mit einer Photonenenergie von 2.96 keV emittierte. Die gestreute Strahlung wurde unter einem Winkel von 120° von einem Röntgenspektrometer mit einem gekrümmten Reflektor aus hochorientiertem pyrolithischen Graphit in von Hamos Geometrie aufgenommen. Eine Variation des zeitlichen Abstands der Laserpulse ermöglichte es, die Dynamik der gemessenen Parameter zu bestimmen. Die Messungen ergaben Dichten im komprimierten Bereich von bis zu 1.3 g/cm^3 bei Temperaturen von 2.6 eV. Dies entspricht annähernd der dreifachen Festkörperdichte. Der Vergleich der Messergebnisse zu hydrodynamischen Simulationen zeigt die beste Übereinstimmung bei Verwendung der PROPACEOS-Zustandsgleichung für die Plasmaexpansion und dem QEOS-Modell für die Ionisationszustände. Im zweiten Experiment wurden die Eigenschaften von Kohlenstoff im Bereich des Schmelzpunktes untersucht. Hierzu wurde eine Graphitprobe mit der Festkörperdichte von 2.25 g/cm^3 durch ultrakurze, lasererzeugte Protonenstrahlen geheizt. Als Röntgenquelle diente die Helium-alpha-Linie eines Titanplasmas mit einer Photonenenergie von 4.75 keV, das durch einen zweiten Hochintensitätslaser erzeugt wurde. Die Emissionsdauer der Röntgenstrahlung lag in derselben Größenordnung wie die Laserpulsdauer von 18 ps. Damit waren sowohl die Dauer des Heizmechanismus als auch die diagnostische Wechselwirkungszeit deutlich kürzer als die Zeitskalen, auf denen eine hydrodynamische Expansion stattfindet. Durch das für lasererzeugte Protonenstrahlen typische exponentielle Energiespektrum ergab sich in der Probe ein ebenfalls exponentielles Temperaturprofil. Bei den erreichten Protonenenergien führte das zu einer teilweise geschmolzenen Probe. Der Vergleich der Streusignale verschieden stark geheizter und kalter Kohlenstoffproben erlaubte die Bestimmung des Anteils, der sich in der flüssigen Phase befindet. So konnten bis zu 70% der Probe in den flüssigen Zustand gebracht werden, was einer Masse von etwa 6 μg entspricht. Diese Daten wurden mit theoretischen Vorhersagen der SESAME-Zustandsgleichung sowie einer Zustandsgleichung verglichen, die aus ab-initio-Simulationen auf Basis der Dichtefunktionaltheorie gewonnen wurde. Es ergibt sich, dass SESAME eine gute Beschreibung liefert, solange der flüssige Anteil der Probe nicht überwiegt. Bei zunehmender Energiedeposition in der Probe wird die Abweichung dieses Modells so groß, dass insgesamt die Dichtefunktionaltheorie eine bessere Übereinstimmung mit den Ergebnissen zeigt.

This technical design report (TDR) of the High Energy Density Physics scientific instrument (HED instrument) at the European XFEL outlines the scientific and technological requirements for the various subsystems and describes the technical realization of the instrument chosen to match these requirements.The scientific requirements have been extracted from a range of proposed scientific applications at HED. Most of these applications had been discussed in the past years as the core of the scientific activity at HED, but, with the recent start of operation of the Matter under Extreme Conditions instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, California, several new ideas and applications have been included. High energy density (HED) matter is generally defined as having an energy density above 1011 J•$m^{-3}$, which is equivalent to 100 GPa (1 Mbar) pressure and 500 T magnetic pressure.
