Ion specificity and related Hofmeister effects, ubiquitous in aqueous systems, can have spectacular consequences in hydrated clays, where ion-specific nanoscale surface forces can determine large scale cohesive, swelling and shrinkage behaviors of soil and sediments. We have used a semi-atomistic computational approach and examined sodium, calcium and aluminum counterions confined with water between charged surfaces representative of clay materials, to show that ion-water structuring in nanoscale confinement is at the origin of surface forces between clay particles which are intrinsically ion-specific. When charged surfaces strongly confine ions and water, the amplitude and oscillations of the net pressure naturally emerge from the interplay of electrostatics and steric effects, which can not be captured by existing theories. Increasing confinement and surface charge densities promote ion-water structures that increasingly deviate from the ions' bulk hydration shells, being strongly anisotropic and persistent, and self-organizing into optimized, nearly solid-like assemblies where hardly any free water is left. In these conditions, strongly attractive interactions can prevail between charged surfaces, due to the dramatically reduced dielectric screening of water and the highly organized water-ion structures. By unravelling the ion-specific nature of these nanoscale interactions, we provide evidence that ion-specific solvation structures determined by confinement are at the origin of ion specificity in clays and potentially a broader range of confined aqueous systems., Comment: Main text: 14 pages and 6 figures. Cement is one of the most produced materials in the world. A major player in greenhouse gas emissions, it is the main binding agent in concrete, to which it provides a cohesive strength that rapidly increases during setting. Understanding how such cohesion emerges has been a major obstacle to advances in cement science and technology. Here, we combine computational statistical mechanics and theory to demonstrate how cement cohesion results from the organization of interlocked ions and water, progressively confined in nano-slits between charged surfaces of Calcium-Silicate-Hydrates. Due to the water/ions interlocking, dielectric screening is drastically reduced and ionic correlations are proven significantly stronger than previously thought, dictating the evolution of the nano-scale interactions during cement hydration. By developing a quantitative analytical prediction of cement cohesion based on Coulombic forces, we reconcile a novel fundamental understanding of cement hydration with the fully atomistic description of the solid cement paste and open new paths for science and technologies of construction materials.

Utilizing a 3D mean-field lattice-gas model, we analyze the effect of confinement on the nature of capillary phase transition in granular aggregates with varying disorder and their inverse porous structures obtained by interchanging particles and pores. Surprisingly, the confinement effects are found to be much less pronounced in granular aggregates as opposed to porous structures. We show that this discrepancy can be understood in terms of the surface-surface correlation length with a connected path through the fluid domain, suggesting that this length captures the true degree of confinement. We also find that the liquid-gas phase transition in these porous materials is of second order nature near capillary critical temperature, which is shown to represent a true critical temperature, i.e. independent of the degree of disorder and the nature of solid matrix, discrete or continuous. The critical exponents estimated here from finite-size scaling analysis suggest that this transition belongs to the 3D random field Ising model universality class as hypothesized by P.G. de Gennes, with the underlying random fields induced by local disorder in fluid-solid interactions.

From soft polymeric gels to hardened cement paste, amorphous solids under constant load exhibit a pronounced time-dependent deformation called creep. The microscopic mechanism of such a phenomenon is poorly understood in amorphous materials and constitutes an even greater challenge in densely packed and chemically reactive granular systems. Both features are prominently present in hydrating cement pastes composed of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) nanoparticles, whose packing density increases as a function of time, while cement hydration is taking place. Performing nano-indentation tests and porosity measurements on a large collection of samples at various stages of hydration, we show that the creep response of hydrating cement paste is mainly controlled by the inter-particle distance and results from slippage between (C-S-H) nanoparticles. Our findings provide a unique insight into the microscopic mechanism underpinning the creep response in aging granular materials, thus paving the way for the design of concrete with improved creep resistance., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Freezing in charged porous media can induce significant pressure and cause damage to tissues and functional materials. We formulate a thermodynamically consistent theory to model freezing phenomena inside charged heterogeneous porous space. Two regimes are distinguished: free ions in open pore space lead to negligible effects of freezing point depression and pressure. On the other hand, if nano-fluidic salt trapping happens, subsequent ice formation is suppressed due to the high concentration of ions in the electrolyte. In this case, our theory predicts that freezing starts at a significantly lower temperature compared to pure water. In 1D, as the temperature goes even lower, ice continuously grows, until the salt concentration reaches saturation, all ions precipitate to form salt crystals, and freezing completes. Enormous pressure can be generated if initial salt concentration is high before salt entrapment. We show modifications to the classical nucleation theory, due to the trapped salt ions. Interestingly, although the freezing process is enormously changed by trapped salts, our analysis shows that the Gibbs-Thompson equation on confined melting point shift is not affected by the presence of the electrolyte., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Capillary effects such as imbibition-drying cycles impact the mechanics of granular systems over time. A multiscale poromechanics framework was applied to cement paste, that is the most common building material, experiencing broad humidity variations over the lifetime of infrastructure. First, the liquid density distribution at intermediate to high relative humidities is obtained using a lattice gas density functional method together with a realistic nano-granular model of cement hydrates. The calculated adsorption/desorption isotherms and pore size distributions are discussed and compare well to nitrogen and water experiments. The standard method for pore size distribution determination from desorption data is evaluated. Then, the integration of the Korteweg liquid stress field around each cement hydrate particle provided the capillary forces at the nanoscale. The cement mesoscale structure was relaxed under the action of the capillary forces. Local irreversible deformations of the cement nano-grains assembly were identified due to liquid-solid interactions. The spatial correlations of the nonaffine displacements extend to a few tens of nm. Finally, the Love-Weber method provided the homogenized liquid stress at the micronscale. The homogenization length coincided with the spatial correlation length nonaffine displacements. Our results on the solid response to capillary stress field suggest that the micronscale texture is not affected by mild drying, while local irreversible deformations still occur. A remarkable variety of organisms and wet materials are able to endure temperatures far below the freezing point of bulk water. Cryo-tolerance in biology is usually attributed to "anti-freeze" proteins, and yet massive supercooling ($< -40^\circ$C) is also possible in porous media containing only simple aqueous electrolytes. For concrete pavements, the common wisdom is that freeze-thaw damage results from the expansion of water upon freezing, but this cannot explain the large pressures ($> 10$~MPa) required to damage concrete, the observed correlation between pavement damage and de-icing salts, or the damage of cement paste loaded with benzene (which contracts upon freezing). In this Letter, we propose a different mechanism -- nanofluidic salt trapping -- which can explain the observations, using simple mathematical models of dissolved ions confined to thin liquid films between growing ice and charged surfaces. Although trapped salt lowers the freezing point, ice nucleation in charged pores causes enormous disjoining pressures via the rejected ions, until their removal by precipitation or surface adsorption at a lower temperatures releases the pressure and allows complete freezing. The theory is able to predict the non-monotonic salt-concentration dependence of freeze-thaw damage in concreter and provides a general framework to understand the origins of cryo-tolerance., Comment: 5 figures

We simulate the granulation process of solid spherical particles in the presence of a viscous liquid in a horizontal rotating drum by using molecular dynamics simulations in three dimensions. The numerical approach accounts for the cohesive and viscous effects of the binding liquid, which is assumed to be transported by wet particles and re-distributed homogeneously between wet particles in contact. We investigate the growth of a single granule introduced into the granular bed and the cumulative numbers of accreted and eroded particles as a function of time for a range of values of material parameters such as mean particle size, size polydispersity, friction coefficient, and liquid viscosity. We find that the granule growth is an exponential function of time, reflecting the decrease of the number of free wet particles. The influence of material parameters on the accretion and erosion rates reveals the nontrivial dynamics of the granulation process. It opens the way to a granulation model based on the realistic determination of particle-scale mechanisms of granulation.

This Article presents a nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory for the mean-field precipitation, aggregation and pattern formation of colloidal clusters. A variable gradient energy coefficient and the arrest of particle diffusion upon "jamming" of cluster aggregates in the spinodal region predicts observable gel patterns that, at high inter-cluster attraction, form system-spanning, out-of-equilibrium networks with glass-like, quasi-static structural relaxation. For reactive systems, we incorporate the free energy landscape of stable pre-nucleation clusters into the Allen-Cahn-Reaction equation. We show that pattern formation is dominantly controlled by the Damk\"ohler number and the stability of the clusters, which modifies the auto-catalytic rate of precipitation. As clusters individually become more stable, bulk phase separation is suppressed.

We propose a theoretical framework to calculate capillary stresses in complex mesoporous materials, such as moist sand, nanoporous hydrates, and drying colloidal films. Molecular simulations are mapped onto a phase-field model of the liquid-vapor mixture, whose inhomogeneous stress tensor is integrated over Voronoi polyhedra in order to calculate equal and opposite forces between each pair of neighboring grains. The method is illustrated by simulations of moisture-induced forces in small clusters and random packings of spherical grains using lattice-gas Density Functional Theory. For a nano-granular model of cement hydrates, this approach reproduces the hysteretic water sorption/desorption isotherms and predicts drying shrinkage strain isotherm in good agreement with experiments. We show that capillary stress is an effective mechanism for internal stress relaxation in colloidal random packings, which contributes to the extraordinary durability of cement paste., Comment: 4 figures

Upon loading, atomic networks can feature delayed viscoplastic relaxation. However, the effect of composition and structure on such a relaxation remains poorly understood. Herein, relying on accelerated molecular dynamics simulations and topological constraint theory, we investigate the relationship between atomic topology and stress-induced relaxation, by taking the example of creep deformations in calcium--silicate--hydrates, the binding phase of concrete. Under constant shear stress, C--S--H is found to feature delayed logarithmic shear deformations. We demonstrate that the propensity for relaxation is minimum for isostatic atomic networks, which are characterized by the simultaneous absence of floppy internal modes of relaxation and eigen stress. This suggests that topological nano-engineering could lead to the discovery of non-aging materials.

Understanding the physical origin of creep in calcium--silicate--hydrate (C--S--H) is of primary importance, both for fundamental and practical interest. Here, we present a new method, based on molecular dynamics simulation, allowing us to simulate the long-term visco-elastic deformations of C--S--H. Under a given shear stress, C--S--H features a gradually increasing shear strain, which follows a logarithmic law. The computed creep modulus is found to be independent of the shear stress applied and is in excellent agreement with nanoindentation measurements, as extrapolated to zero porosity.

The nature of Calcium--Silicate--Hydrate (C--S--H), the binding phase of cement, remains a controversial question. In particular, contrary to the former crystalline model, it was recently proposed that its nanoscale structure was actually amorphous. To elucidate this issue, we analyzed the structure of a realistic simulation of C--S--H, and compared the latter to crystalline tobermorite, a natural analogue to cement, and to an artificial ideal glass. Results clearly support that C--S--H is amorphous. However, its structure shows an intermediate degree of order, retaining some characteristics of the crystal while acquiring an overall glass-like disorder.
