Objective: Limited access to high-quality green spaces could contribute to growing rates of chronic diseases and unhealthy behaviors. Public parks provide numerous benefits for population well-being. However, past research has shown mixed results regarding the association between proximal parks and residents' physical and mental health. This study examined the relationship between diverse elements of park access and quality and multiple health outcomes., Methods: Seventy-three unique parks within 70 census tracts in 4 cities in South Carolina were analyzed. Data about 7 aspects of park quality (transportation access, facility availability, facility quality, amenity availability, park aesthetics, park quality concerns, neighborhood quality concerns) were collected via on-site observations using the Community Park Audit Tool. Health data for each tract (obesity, no leisure time physical activity, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, depression, poor mental health) were collected from the CDC PLACES dataset. Linear regression analyses examined the association between 10 park access and quality metrics and 8 health metrics, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics., Results: All associations were in the unexpected direction except 1 relationship involving mental health. Specifically, positive associations were found between the number of parks and obesity, the number of parks and no leisure time physical activity, transportation access and obesity, and transportation access and high blood pressure. As concerns about neighborhood quality increased, poor mental health status worsened., Conclusions: This study provides valuable information for public health professionals and researchers. Further research is needed to expand on and elucidate these findings.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a valuable and complementary tool in environmental research, but it is underutilized due to the cost, size, and maintenance requirements of standard "high-field" NMR spectrometers. "Low-field" NMR spectrometers are a financially and physically accessible alternative, but their lower sensitivity and increased spectral overlap limit the analysis of heterogeneous environmental/biological media, especially with fast-relaxing samples that produce broad, low-intensity spectra. This study therefore investigates the potential of the steady-state free precession (SSFP) experiment to enhance signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of fast-relaxing, complex samples at both high- and low-field. SSFP works by obtaining steady-state transverse signal using a train of equally spaced radiofrequency pulses with the same flip angle and a time between pulses less than the transverse relaxation time, allowing for thousands of scans to be summed in a short time period. Here, 13 C-SSFP is applied to samples of varying complexity (egg white, dissolved organic matter, and crude oil) at low-field and at high-field for testing and comparison. The potential of in vivo SSFP NMR is additionally investigated by applying 31 P-SSFP to live Eisenia fetida at high-field. In some samples, SSFP increased 13 C SNR by over 2000% at both high-field and low-field compared to standard 13 C NMR and enabled detection of peaks that were not observable by standard 13 C NMR. Ultimately, SSFP holds great potential for improving analysis of fast-relaxing, complex samples, which could in turn make low-field NMR spectroscopy a more effective tool not only in environmental/biological research but also in numerous other disciplines.

The excellent versatility of 5-axis computer numerical control (CNC) micromilling has led to its application for prototyping NMR microcoils tailored to mass-limited samples (reducing development time and cost). However, vibrations during 5-axis milling can hinder the creation of complex 3D volume microcoils (i.e., solenoids and saddle coils). To address these limitations, a high-resolution NSCNC ELARA 4-axis milling machine was developed with the extra precision required for making complex 3D volume microcoils. Upon investigating the performance of resonators made with various copper-coated dielectrics, resonators with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) provided the best SNR/line shape. Thus, complex 1.7 mm microcoil designs were machined from Cu-coated PMMA. A milled 6.4 mm solenoid also provided 6.6× the total carbon signal for a 13 C-labeled broccoli seed compared to a commercial inverse 5 mm NMR probe (demonstrating potential for larger coil designs). However, the manufacture of coils <1.7 mm with copper-coated PMMA rods was challenging as ∼0.5 mm of remaining PMMA was needed to retain their structural integrity. To manufacture smaller microcoils, both a solenoid and saddle coil (both with 1 mm O.D., 0.1 mm thick walls) were etched from Cu-coated glass capillaries using a UV picosecond laser that was mounted onto an NSCNC 5-axis MiRA7L. Both resonators showed excellent signal and identified a wide range of metabolites in a 13 C-labeled algae extract, while the solenoid was further tested on two copepod egg sacs (∼4 μg of total sample). In summary, the flexibility to prototype complex microcoils in-house allows laboratories to tailor microcoils to specific mass-limited samples while avoiding the costs of cleanrooms.

In vivo NMR is evolving into an important tool to understand biological processes and environmental responses. Current approaches use flow systems to sustain the organisms with oxygenated water and food (e.g., algae) inside the NMR. However, such systems have the potential to leak and clog (potentially damaging costly hardware), require large volumes of media, and multiple expensive HPLC pumps. The proposed "oxygenation system", uses a simple "double slit" adapter and a single air/oxygen flow line into the NMR. The design is especially suited to larger diameter probes given that standard flow systems would require higher flow rates thus amplifying the potential and impact of leaks/clogs. Traditionally, in vivo NMR of small organisms (e.g., Daphnia ) have required 2D NMR in combination with 13 C enrichment to overcome susceptibility distortions and provide information rich metabolic profiles. Here Daphnia magna , Eisenia fetida and Artemia franciscana are used to demonstrate the potential of the oxygenation system. Survivability tests and 1 H time-resolved monitoring were first performed on D. magna , while E. fetida contained enough biomass to permit 1 H- 13 C HSQC, 13 C- 1 H HETCOR and 31 P NMR without isotopic enrichment. Finally, STOCSY of 1D 13 C NMR was used to follow the growth of A. franciscana (without 13 C enrichment) for 48 h after birth, which helps visualize trends across a series of 1D in vivo data. In summary, application of the oxygenation system toward larger diameter probes allows the collection of NMR data without enrichment, offering a promising solution to better understand processes in vivo.

Benchtop NMR provides improved accessibility in terms of cost, space, and technical expertise. In turn, this encourages new users into the field of NMR spectroscopy. Unfortunately, many interesting samples in education and research, from beer to whole blood, contain significant amounts of water that require suppression in 1 H NMR in order to recover sample information. However, due to the significant reduction in chemical shift dispersion in benchtop NMR systems, the sample signals are much closer to the water resonance compared to those in a corresponding high-field NMR spectrum. Therefore, simply translating solvent suppression experiments intended for high-field NMR instruments to benchtop NMR systems without careful consideration can be problematic. In this study, the effectiveness of several popular water suppression schemes was evaluated for benchtop NMR applications. Emphasis is placed on pulse sequences with no, or few, adjustable parameters making them easy to implement. These fall into two main categories: (1) those based on Pre-SAT including Pre-SAT, PURGE, NOESY-PR, and g-NOESY-PR and (2) those based on binomial inversion including JRS and W5-WATERGATE. Among these schemes, solvent suppression sequences based on Pre-SAT offer a general approach for easy solvent suppression for samples with higher analyte concentrations (sucrose standard and Redbull™). However, for human urine, binomial-like sequences were required. In summary, it is demonstrated that highly efficient water suppression approaches can be implemented on benchtop NMR systems in a simple manner, despite the limited spectral dispersion, further illustrating the potential for widespread implementation of these approaches in education and research., (© 2024 The Authors. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) based 13 C tracing has broad applications across medical and environmental research. As many biological and environmental samples are heterogeneous, they experience considerable spectral overlap and relatively low signal. Here a 1D 1 H- 12 C/ 13 C is introduced that uses "in-phase/opposite-phase" encoding to simultaneously detect and discriminate both protons attached to 12 C and 13 C at full 1 H sensitivity in every scan. Unlike traditional approaches that focus on the 12 C/ 13 C satellite ratios in a 1 H spectrum, this approach creates separate sub-spectra for the 12 C and 13 C bound protons. These spectra can be used for both quantitative and qualitative analysis of complex samples with significant spectral overlap. Due to the presence of the 13 C dipole, faster relaxation of the 1 H- 13 C pairs results in slight underestimation compared to the 1 H- 12 C pairs. However, this is easily compensated for, by collecting an additional reference spectrum, from which the absolute percentage of 13 C can be calculated by difference. When combined with the result, 12 C and 13 C percent enrichment in both 1 H- 12 C and 1 H- 13 C fractions are obtained. As the approach uses isotope filtered 1 H NMR for detection, it retains nearly the same sensitivity as a standard 1 H spectrum. Here, a proof-of-concept is performed using simple mixtures of 12 C and 13 C glucose, followed by suspended algal cells with varying 12 C / 13 C ratios representing a complex mixture. The results consistently return 12 C/ 13 C ratios that deviate less than 1 % on average from the expected. Finally, the sequence was used to monitor and quantify 13 C% enrichment in Daphnia magna neonates which were fed a 13 C diet over 1 week. The approach helped reveal how the organisms utilized the 12 C lipids they are born with vs. the 13 C lipids they assimilate from their diet during growth. Objective: Although the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had widespread negative impacts on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs), there has been little research on psychological interventions during the pandemic for this population. The current study examines whether a brief coping-focused treatment intervention delivered in a virtual individual format would be associated with positive changes in Canadian HCWs' mental health during the pandemic., Method: Three hundred and thirty-three HCWs receiving the intervention at 3 large specialty tertiary care hospitals in Ontario, Canada, completed measures of anxiety, depression, perceived stress, work/social impairment, insomnia and fear of COVID-19. After completing treatment, HCWs rated their satisfaction with the treatment., Results: The intervention was associated with large effect size improvements in anxiety, depression, perceived stress, insomnia and fear of COVID-19, and moderate effect size improvements in work/social impairment. At treatment session 1, prior mental health diagnosis and treatment were both significantly correlated with depression, anxiety, and work/social impairment scores. Secondary analyses of data from one of the sites revealed that treatment-related changes in anxiety, depression, perceived stress and work/social impairment were independent of age, gender, occupational setting, profession and the presence of a previous mental health diagnosis or treatment, with the exception that nurses improved at a slightly greater rate than other professions in terms of work/social impairment. HCWs were highly satisfied with the treatment., Conclusions: A large number of HCWs experiencing significant distress at baseline self-referred for assistance. Timely and flexible access to a brief virtual coping-focused intervention was associated with improvements in symptoms and impairment, and treatment response was largely unrelated to demographic or professional characteristics. Background: The phenomenon of lung cancer stigma has been firmly established in the literature. However, studies have predominantly focused on patients with advanced disease, whose experiences may differ from patients with earlier stage, surgically resectable lung cancer and an improved prognosis., Purpose: The objective of the study was to examine the stigma experienced in a Canadian population with early-stage, resectable lung cancer., Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer were enrolled at a tertiary thoracic surgery clinic. The 25-item Lung Cancer Stigma Inventory (LCSI) was self-administered by patients to quantitatively measure experiences of lung cancer stigma. LCSI results informed the development of a semi-structured focus group and individual interviews., Results: Of the 53 participants completing the survey, 38 (72%) met established LCSI score threshold, indicating a clinically meaningful level of stigma. No significant relationship was found between total LCSI scores and any demographic variable. Analysis of qualitative data revealed multiple themes related to experiences of lung cancer stigma. The major themes were classified into four categories: impact of the association between lung cancer and smoking, societal attitudes and assumptions, personal choices in relation to diagnosis, and experiences related to care., Conclusions: A surgical population of patients with predominantly early-stage lung cancer experienced lung cancer stigma at a high incidence and a level similar to previously studied populations with more advanced disease. The qualitative results support the quantitative findings that respondents experienced more internal stigma than either perceived stigma from others or constrained disclosure related to their diagnosis., (© Society of Behavioral Medicine 2022. In three studies that employed community-based samples the relationship between personality, marital, and job-related factors and quality of life was examined. Study 1 indicated that hardiness and self-esteem were important components of overall quality of life. The marital communication skills of expressiveness and intimacy were identified as major aspects of overall quality of life in the second study. In Study 3, satisfaction with various job characteristics was related to overall quality of life. These studies start to provide definition to the quality of life concept in terms of personality characteristics, skills, and beliefs that have potential for modification.
