Abstract

The use of the spin Hall effect and its inverse to electrically detect and manipulate dynamic spin currents generated via ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) driven spin pumping has enabled the investigation of these dynamically injected currents across a wide variety of ferromagnetic materials. However, while this approach has proven to be an invaluable diagnostic for exploring the spin pumping process it requires strong spin-orbit coupling, thus substantially limiting the materials basis available for the detector/channel material (primarily Pt, W and Ta). Here, we report FMR driven spin pumping into a weak spin-orbit channel through the measurement of a spin accumulation voltage in a Si-based metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) heterostructure. This alternate experimental approach enables the investigation of dynamic spin pumping in a broad class of materials with weak spin-orbit coupling and long spin lifetime while providing additional information regarding the phase evolution of the injected spin ensemble via Hanle-based measurements of the effective spin lifetime., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

6. High-quality InAsyP1-y step-graded buffer by molecular-beam epitaxy

Abstract

Relaxed, high-quality, compositionally step-graded InAsyP1-y layers with an As composition of y=0.4, corresponding to a lattice mismatch of similar to1.3% were grown on InP substrates using solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy. Each layer was found to be nearly fully relaxed observed by triple axis x-ray diffraction, and plan-view transmission electron microscopy revealed an average threading dislocations of 4x10(6) cm(-2) within the InAs0.4P0.6 cap layer. Extremely ordered crosshatch morphology was observed with very low surface roughness (3.16 nm) compared to cation-based In0.7Al0.3As/InxAl1-xAs/InP graded buffers (10.53 nm) with similar mismatch and span of lattice constants on InP. The results show that InAsyP1-y graded buffers on InP are promising candidates as virtual substrates for infrared and high-speed metamorphic III-V devices. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis due to vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (CVST-VITT) is an adverse drug reaction occurring after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination. CVST-VITT patients often present with large intracerebral haemorrhages and a high proportion undergoes decompressive surgery. Clinical characteristics, therapeutic management and outcomes of CVST-VITT patients who underwent decompressive surgery are described and predictors of in-hospital mortality in these patients are explored. METHODS: Data from an ongoing international registry of patients who developed CVST within 28 days of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, reported between 29 March 2021 and 10 May 2022, were used. Definite, probable and possible VITT cases, as defined by Pavord et al. (N Engl J Med 2021; 385: 1680-1689), were included. RESULTS: Decompressive surgery was performed in 34/128 (27%) patients with CVST-VITT. In-hospital mortality was 22/34 (65%) in the surgical and 27/94 (29%) in the non-surgical group (p < 0.001). In all surgical cases, the cause of death was brain herniation. The highest mortality rates were found amongst patients with preoperative coma (17/18, 94% vs. 4/14, 29% in the non-comatose; p < 0.001) and bilaterally absent pupillary reflexes (7/7, 100% vs. 6/9, 67% with unilaterally reactive pupil, and 4/11, 36% with bilaterally reactive pupils; p = 0.023). Postoperative imaging revealed worsening of index haemorrhagic lesion in 19 (70%) patients and new haemorrhagic lesions in 16 (59%) patients. At a median follow-up of 6 months, 8/10 of surgical CVST-VITT who survived admission were functionally independent. CONCLUSIONS: Almost two-thirds of surgical CVST-VITT patients died during hospital admission. Preoperative coma and bilateral absence of pupillary responses were associated with higher mortality rates. Survivors often achieved functional independence.

Abstract

Background: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) due to vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a severe condition, with high in-hospital mortality rates. Here, we report clinical outcomes of patients with CVT-VITT after SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) vaccination who survived initial hospitalization. Methods: We used data from an international registry of patients who developed CVT within 28 days of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, collected until February 10, 2022. VITT diagnosis was classified based on the Pavord criteria. Outcomes were mortality, functional independence (modified Rankin Scale score 0-2), VITT relapse, new thrombosis, and bleeding events (all after discharge from initial hospitalization). Results: Of 107 CVT-VITT cases, 43 (40%) died during initial hospitalization. Of the remaining 64 patients, follow-up data were available for 60 (94%) patients (37 definite VITT, 9 probable VITT, and 14 possible VITT). Median age was 40 years and 45/60 (75%) patients were women. Median follow-up time was 150 days (interquartile range, 94-194). Two patients died during follow-up (3% [95% CI, 1%-11%). Functional independence was achieved by 53/60 (88% [95% CI, 78%-94%]) patients. No new venous or arterial thrombotic events were reported. Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) due to vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a severe condition, with high in-hospital mortality rates. Here, we report clinical outcomes of patients with CVT-VITT after SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) vaccination who survived initial hospitalization. METHODS: We used data from an international registry of patients who developed CVT within 28 days of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, collected until February 10, 2022. VITT diagnosis was classified based on the Pavord criteria. Outcomes were mortality, functional independence (modified Rankin Scale score 0-2), VITT relapse, new thrombosis, and bleeding events (all after discharge from initial hospitalization). RESULTS: Of 107 CVT-VITT cases, 43 (40%) died during initial hospitalization. Of the remaining 64 patients, follow-up data were available for 60 (94%) patients (37 definite VITT, 9 probable VITT, and 14 possible VITT). Median age was 40 years and 45/60 (75%) patients were women. Median follow-up time was 150 days (interquartile range, 94-194). Two patients died during follow-up (3% [95% CI, 1%-11%). Functional independence was achieved by 53/60 (88% [95% CI, 78%-94%]) patients. No new venous or arterial thrombotic events were reported. One patient developed a major bleeding during follow-up (fatal intracerebral bleed). CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to the high mortality of CVT-VITT in the acute phase, mortality among patients who survived the initial hospitalization was low, new thrombotic events did not occur, and bleeding events were rare. Contains fulltext : 282309.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), OBJECTIVE: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) caused by vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a rare adverse effect of adenovirus-based severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines. In March 2021, after autoimmune pathogenesis of VITT was discovered, treatment recommendations were developed. These comprised immunomodulation, non-heparin anticoagulants, and avoidance of platelet transfusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate adherence to these recommendations and its association with mortality. METHODS: We used data from an international prospective registry of patients with CVT after the adenovirus-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We analyzed possible, probable, or definite VITT-CVT cases included until January 18, 2022. Immunomodulation entailed administration of intravenous immunoglobulins and/or plasmapheresis. RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients with VITT-CVT from 71 hospitals in 17 countries were analyzed. Five of 38 (13%), 11 of 24 (46%), and 28 of 37 (76%) of the patients diagnosed in March, April, and from May onward, respectively, were treated in-line with VITT recommendations (p < 0.001). Overall, treatment according to recommendations had no statistically significant influence on mortality (14/44 [32%] vs 29/55 [52%], adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.43, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16-1.19). However, patients who received immunomodulation had lower mortality (19/65 [29%] vs 24/34 [70%], adjusted OR = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.06-0.58). Treatment with non-heparin anticoagulants instead of heparins was not associated with lower mortality (17/51 [33%] vs 13/35 [37%], adjusted OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.24-2.04). Mortality was also not significantly influenced by platelet transfusion (17/27 [63%] vs 26/72 [36%], adjusted OR = 2.19, 95% CI = 0.74-6.54). Abstract

Defects in semiconductors lead to deleterious effects in electron devices, but identifying their physical sources can be difficult. An example of this in gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistors is the well-known trap state located at approximately EC-0.57 eV. This trap is strongly correlated with output power degradation and reliability issues, but despite two decades of study, its specific physical source is still unknown. To address this long-standing question, two complementary nm-resolution characterization techniques—scanning probe deep level transient spectroscopy (SP-DLTS) and electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI)—were used to spatially map the lateral distribution of these traps and to image and characterize their relation to residual threading dislocations within NH3-MBE-grown n-type GaN. Direct comparison of the SP-DLTS and ECCI measurements on the same sample region reveals highly localized concentrations of EC-0.57 eV traps that are spatially correlated with pure edge type threading dislocations in the GaN, but not with mixed and/or screw type dislocations, indicating that the specific dislocation character is a defining factor for this particular defect level. This work demonstrates the efficacy of combining these two techniques to obtain energy-, location-, and structure-resolved characterization of defects in a functional device structure. Abstract

Aim: Granule‐based products of solid state fermented micro‐organisms are available for biocontrol. Because liquid fermentation has several advantages, we investigated fluid‐bed coating with liquid fermented biomass. Methods and Results: Biomass containing mycelium or mycelium and submerged spores of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium brunneum, Cordyceps fumosorosea and Beauveria bassiana were produced in liquid culture, separated and different biomass concentrations were adjusted. Based on the examined thermo‐tolerance, we defined fluid‐bed coating adjustments and investigated granule colonization and sporulation on granules. Granule colonization depended on the biomass concentration and strain. For C. fumosorosea and B. bassiana, concentrations of 0·003%dry weight resulted in nearly 100% granule colonization, for M. brunneum with concentrations of 0·7%dry weight in only 50%. The conidiation on granules in sterile soil was highly influenced by the moisture content. Because the granule colonization of M. brunneum was unsatisfactory, we pre‐coated nutrients followed by coating with biomass, submerged spores or conidia. Malt extract had a positive effect on the granule colonization for biomass and submerged spores. Furthermore, aerial conidia can also be coated. Conclusions: Fluid‐bed coating of fungal biomass is suitable for the development of granules. Abstract

The structural, morphological, and defect properties of mixed anion, InAsyP1-y and mixed cation, InxAl1-xAs metamorphic step-graded buffers grown on InP substrates are investigated and compared. Two types of buffers were grown to span the identical range of lattice constants and lattice mismatch (∼1.1–1.2%) on (100) InP substrates by solid source molecular beam epitaxy. Symmetric relaxation of ∼90% in the two orthogonal <110> directions with minimal lattice tilt was observed for the terminal InAs0.4P0.6 and In0.7Al0.3As overlayers of each graded buffer type, indicating nearly equal numbers of α and β dislocations were formed during the relaxation process and that the relaxation is near equilibrium and hence insensitive to asymmetric dislocation kinetics. Atomic force microscopy reveals extremely ordered crosshatch morphology and very low root mean square (rms) roughness of ∼2.2 nm for the InAsP relaxed buffers compared to the InAlAs relaxed buffers (∼7.3 nm) at the same degree of lattice mismatch with respect to the InP substrates. Moreover, phase decomposition is observed for the InAlAs buffers, whereas InAsP buffers displayed ideal, step-graded buffer characteristics. The impact of the structural differences between the two buffer types on metamorphic devices was demonstrated by comparing identical 0.6 eV band gap lattice-mismatched In0.69Ga0.31As thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices that were grown on these buffers. Clearly superior device performance was achieved on InAsyP1-y buffers, which is attributed primarily to the impact of layer roughness on the carrier recombination rates near the front window/emitter interface of the TPV devices. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

We have made finite element calculations of the expected potential profile around negatively charged threading dislocations (TDs) close to a metal -- semiconductor interlace, using a Pt contact on n-type GaN as a specific case. The potential was calculated as a function of the assumed linear density and energy level of TD-related acceptors. Our model shows good agreement with the model of Read [W. T. Read, Philos. Mag. 45, 775 (1954); 46, 111 (1954)] for an infinite dislocation, far from any interface. Assuming 1 acceptor/c-axis lattice spacing (c=0.52 nm), we found for our near-surface modeling that acceptors levels deeper than 1.3 eV below the conduction band minimum (CBM) should be charged all the way to the Pt/GaN interface. This should produce a significant local increase in the potential barrier and at the Pt/GaN interface and should be observable by ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM). In fact recent BEEM measurements by Im et al. on molecular beam epitaxy-grown GaN films [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 106802 (2001)] showed no significant increased barrier at TDs indicating an acceptor energy within 1.3 eV of CBM and/or an acceptor density less then 1 acceptor/c-axis lattice spacing. 38. Refinement of a training concept for tutors in problem-based learning

Abstract

The use of problem-based learning (PBL) in the Charité Berlin Human Medicine model curriculum requires the annual training of 80 to 100 new PBL tutors using PBL tutor training (PTT). Therefore, the following three measures were taken: The existing traditional PTT (Trad-PTT) was further developed into an interactive PTT (Inter-PTT), which is using more interactive teaching tools. Both PTT concepts ran for 12 months, respectively. The review of the Inter-PTT was significantly better, as the PBL tutors understood their tasks within the PBL process better and felt more motivated. A follow-up survey after the initial experience with PBL confirmed almost all the positive aspects of the Inter-PTT. In addition, the Inter-PTT was also offered to non-clinicians and other scientific staff to make the training interdisciplinary. PTT made it possible to communicate beyond specialist boundaries; however, the interdisciplinary idea was no longer detectable in the follow-up survey. In order to increase the number of available PBL tutors, a self-commitment was introduced for the departments. This increased the number of "involuntary" participants for PTT, but reduced the amount of necessary training courses. The fulfilment of self-commitment succeeded in almost all departments. A PTT tailored to the needs of the tutors is a basic prerequisite in order to excite teachers about PBL and to familiarise them with their role as learning facilitators. The increase of interactive teaching forms led to a joint interdisciplinary learning process within PTT. The excellent review of Inter-PTT makes it a solid basis for further training concepts., Der Einsatz von Problem- orientiertem Lernen (PBL) im Modellstudiengang Humanmedizin der Charité Berlin erfordert die jährliche Schulung von 80- 100 neuen PBL Tutoren mittels PBL- Tutortraining (PTT). Deshalb wurden drei Maßnahmen ergriffen: Das bisher durchgeführte traditionelle PTT (Trad- PTT) wurde zum interaktiven PTT (Inter- PTT) weiter entwickelt, das verstärkt mit interaktiven Lehrformen arbeitet. Beide PTT- Konzepte liefen jeweils 12 Monate lang. Die Bewertung des Inter- PTT war signifikant besser, die PBL Tutoren verstanden ihre Aufgaben im PBL- Prozess besser und fühlten sich stärker motiviert. Eine Nachbefragung nach den ersten Erfahrungen mit PBL bestätigte fast alle positiven Aspekte des Inter- PTT. Zusätzlich wurde das Inter- PTT auch für Nichtkliniker und andere wissenschaftliche Angestellte angeboten, um das Training interdisziplinär zu gestalten. Die Kommunikation über Fachgrenzen hinaus gelang beim PTT; allerdings war der interdisziplinäre Gedanke bei der Nachbefragung nicht mehr nachweisbar. Um die Zahl der verfügbaren PBL Tutoren zu erhöhen, wurde eine Selbstverpflichtung für die Abteilungen eingeführt. Dies steigerte die Teilnahme "unfreiwilliger" Teilnehmer am PTT, reduzierte aber die Zahl der erforderlichen Schulungen. Die Erfüllung der Selbstverpflichtung gelang fast allen Abteilungen. Ein auf die Bedürfnisse der Tutoren zugeschnittenes PTT stellt eine Grundvoraussetzung dar, um Lehrende für PBL zu begeistern und mit ihrer Rolle als Lernförderer vertraut zu machen. Die Vermehrung interaktiver Lehrformen führte beim PTT zu einem gemeinsamen interdisziplinären Lernprozess. Die sehr gute Bewertung von Inter- PTT macht es zur Basis für weitere Schulungskonzepte.
