The technological development of increasingly larger quantum processors on different quantum platforms raises the problem of how to fairly compare their performance, known as quantum benchmarking of quantum processors. This is a challenge that computer scientists have already faced when comparing classical processors, leading to the development of various mathematical tools to address it, but also to the identification of the limits of this problem. In this work, we briefly review the most important aspects of both classical processor benchmarks and the metrics comprising them, providing precise definitions and analyzing the quality attributes that they should exhibit. Subsequently, we analyze the intrinsic properties that characterize the paradigm of quantum computing and hinder the naive transfer of strategies from classical benchmarking. However, we can still leverage some of the lessons learned such as the quality attributes of a \textit{good} benchmark. Additionally, we review some of the most important metrics and benchmarks for quantum processors proposed in the literature, assessing what quality attributes they fulfill. Finally, we propose general guidelines for quantum benchmarking. These guidelines aim to pave the way for establishing a roadmap towards standardizing the performance evaluation of quantum devices, ultimately leading to the creation of an organization akin to the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC)., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

We report on the controlled creation and destruction of antiferromagnetic dimers using two-tone Floquet engineering. We consider a one-dimensional spin-1/2 lattice with periodically modulated bonds using parametric resonances. The stroboscopic dynamics generated from distributed bond modulations lead to pair correlation between spins. Consequently, subharmonic response in local observables breaks discrete time translational symmetry and leads to the emergence of Floquet dynamical dimerisation. We present a protocol allowing the control of local spin-correlated pairs driven by one-period evolution operators, providing significant insight into new nonequilibrium states of matter that can be feasibly implemented in current quantum simulator platforms., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Periodically driven quantum many-body systems exhibit novel nonequilibrium states such as prethermalization, discrete time crystals, and many-body localization. Recently, the general mechanism of fractional resonances has been proposed that leads to slowing the many-body dynamics in systems with both $U(1)$ and parity symmetry. Here, we show that fractional resonance is stable under local noise models. To corroborate our finding, we numerically study the dynamics of a small-scale Bose-Hubbard model that can readily be implemented in existing noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Our findings suggest a possible pathway toward a stable nonequilibrium state of matter, with potential applications of quantum memories for quantum information processing., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. Controlling light-matter based quantum systems in the strong coupling regime allows for exploring quantum simulation of many-body physics in nowadays architectures. For instance, the atom-field interaction in a cavity QED network provides control and scalability for quantum information processing. Here, we propose the control of single- and two-body Jaynes-Cummings systems in a non-equilibrium scenario, which allows us to establish conditions for the coherent and incoherent interchange of polariton branches. Our findings provide a systematic approach to manipulate polaritons interchange, that we apply to reveal new insights in the transition between Mott Insulator- and Superfluid-like states. Furthermore, we study the asymmetry in the absorption spectrum by triggering the cavity and atomic losses as a function of the atom-cavity detuning and photon's hopping.

We report on an emergent dynamical phase of a strongly-correlated light-matter system, which is governed by dimerization processes due to short-range and long-range two-body interactions. The dynamical phase is characterized by the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the translational invariance and appears in an intermediate regime of light-matter interaction between the resonant and dispersive cases. We describe the quench dynamics from an initial state with integer filling factor of a finite-sized array of coupled resonators, each doped with a two-level system, in a closed and open scenario. The closed system dynamics has an effective Hilbert space description that allows us to demonstrate and characterize the emergent dynamical phase via time-averaged quantities, such as fluctuations in the number of polaritons per site and linear entropy. We prove that the dynamical phase is governed by intrinsic two-body interactions and the lattice topological structure. In the open system dynamics, we show evidence about the robustness of dynamical dimerization processes under loss mechanisms.
