Developing a robust zinc (Zn) anode, free from Zn dendrites and unwanted side reactions, relies on designing a durable and efficient interfacial protection layer. In this study, gradient coating technology is employed to construct a hierarchically structured composite of Sn with diamond‐like carbon (DLC/Sn‐DLC) as an artificial protective layer. The DLC framework endows DLC/Sn‐DLC layer with high stability and adaptability, achieving long‐term stability of the anode–electrolyte interface. The gradual‐composite Sn, with its Sn─O─C interface chemical bonds, facilitates rapid charge transfer and offers ample zincophilic sites at the base, promoting uniform Zn2+ reduction reaction and deposition. Additionally, the DLC/Sn‐DLC composite exhibits a "lotus effect" and favorable hydrophobic properties, preventing water‐reduced side reactions. Leveraging this structural design and the synergistic cooperation of DLC and Sn, the DLC/Sn‐DLC@Zn electrode demonstrates remarkable Zn plating/stripping reversibility, eliminating Zn dendrites and side reactions. Notably, under a high current density of 10 mA cm−2, the DLC/Sn‐DLC@Zn anode‐based symmetrical cell exhibits stable operation for over 1550 h, with a low nucleation overpotential of 101 mV. The DLC/Sn‐DLC@Zn||Mn3O4‐CNTs full battery delivers a high capacity of 109.8 mAh cm−2 after 5800 cycles at 2 A g−1, and the pouch cell shows potential for energy storage applications. Heteroatom doping in carbon‐based anode materials is crucial to improve their capacity and promoting the practical application of low‐cost potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs). Herein, the selenium/nitrogen co‐doped amorphous carbon nanocluster (SeN‐ACN) anodes exhibit an ultra‐high reversible capacity of 621 mAh g−1 at 0.75 C (225 mA g−1) and a capacity retention of 93% after 2000 cycles at 5 C, which represent a remarkable achievement in potassium storage in nonmetallic doped carbon materials. This is attributed to the synergistic effects of Se/N co‐doping and their anchoring effects on potassium ions. As a proof of concept, a potassium‐based dual‐ion battery (K‐DIB), which consists of a SeN‐ACN anode and low‐cost graphite cathode, demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 118 mAh g−1 at 150 mA g−1 with a high cut‐off voltage of 5.2 V. Moreover, it presents excellent long‐term cycling performance, with 70% capacity retention after 500 cycles, among the best reported results of K‐DIBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Neuronal apoptosis is one of the pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is associated with senile plaques containing amyloid-b peptide (Abeta). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are proposed to be involved in the apoptotic mechanism of Abeta-mediated neurotoxicity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of aged garlic extract (AGE) and S-allyl cysteine (SAC) on Abeta(25-35)-induced apoptosis and ROS generation in a rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cell line., Material/methods: PC12 cells were grown in RPMI 1640 medium containing 5% fetal calf serum and 10% horse serum. Cells were incubated with AGE or SAC for 24 h prior to exposure to Abeta(25-35) for various times. Cell viability, DNA fragmentation, number of apoptotic cells, caspase activity and generation of ROS were determined., Results: Abeta(25-35)-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells was demonstrated by: 1) A dose-dependent loss of cell viability; 2) A time- and dose-dependent increase in apoptotic cells; 3) An induction of DNA fragmentation; and 4) An increase in caspase-3 activity and cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). After exposing PC12 cells to Abbeta(25-35), a significant increase in ROS preceded apoptotic events. AGE and SAC not only suppressed the generation of ROS but also attenuated caspase-3 activation, DNA fragmentation, PARP cleavage and eventually protected against Ab-induced apoptosis., Conclusions: Our data suggest that ROS may be involved in Ab-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells. They further suggest that garlic compounds can reduce apoptosis, possibly by enhancing the endogenous antioxidant defenses.
