Abstract

The traditional Haber–Bosch process in industry to produce NH3 leads to excessive CO2 emissions and a large amount of energy consumption. Ambient electrochemical N2 reduction is emerging as a green and sustainable alternative method to convert N2 to NH3, but is in sore need of efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Herein, we propose using Pd-doped TiO2 nanoparticles as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst to synthesize NH3 under ambient conditions. The Pd–TiO2 catalyst delivers a large NH3 yield (17.4 μg h−1 mgcat.−1) and a high faradaic efficiency (12.7%) at −0.50 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in a neutral electrolyte, outperforming most Pd- and Ti-based electrocatalysts recently reported for N2 reduction. 40. Effect of Functional Group on the Monolayer Structures of Biodegradable Quaternary Ammonium Surfactants

Abstract

The monolayer structures and conformational ordering of cationic surfactants including the biodegradable quaternary ammonium molecules have been systematically characterized by π–Aisotherm, surface potential, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. It was found that the monolayer of the typical dialkyl dimethylammonium on the water surface was less densely packed along with many conformational gauchedefects. The packing density and ordering of these monolayers were improved as halide ions were added to the subphase. A similar condensation effect was also observed when amide or ester groups are present in the alkyl tails of the surfactant. These results are discussed on the basis of the repulsive electrostatic interactions between the terminal ammonium moieties, the hydrogen bonding between the functional groups in the alkyl chains, as well as the flexibility of the alkyl chains in these surfactants. The present study is crucial to understanding the relationship between the interfacial structures and the functionalities of the biodegradable quaternary ammonium surfactants.

In this Minireview, we summarize the recent advances in the development of electrocatalysts for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR). Strategies to boost the NRR performances are also discussed. Abstract

As a carbon-neutral alternative to the Haber–Bosch process, electrochemical N2 reduction enables environment-friendly NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions but needs active electrocatalysts for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR). In this communication, we report on the first experimental demonstration that non-metal boron phosphide (BP) nanoparticles can be used as a high-efficiency catalyst for the ambient electrohydrogenation of N2 to NH3 with excellent selectivity. In 0.1 M HCl, this catalyst offers a high NH3 yield of 26.42 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 and a high faradaic efficiency of 12.7% at −0.60 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, much superior to those of reported B catalysts. Such an enhancement is attributed to the fact that P in BP further weakens the N≡N bond while simultaneously strengthening the B–N bond and favors the exposure of more active sites for the NRR catalysis, which is supported by density functional theory calculations. Abstract

Rapid and simple detection of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) is important to manage infection and prevent the spread of these bacteria. In this work, we utilize pH response to detect CRE in urine rapidly. By using vancomycin-modified Fe3O4@Au nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Au@VanNPs), CRE in urine were enriched and separated efficiently viavancomycin–cell wall interaction. More importantly, carbapenemases released viaCRE lysis were detected using a pH metre which responded to hydrogen ions generated from imipenem hydrolysis. Thus, the concentration of CRE in urine was detected viathe carbapenemase hydrolysis reaction. The proposed method demonstrated a good linear relationship in the range of 104–108cfu mL−1for CRE with the limit of detection estimated to be 1.0 × 103cfu mL−1. More importantly, this method successfully detected clinically isolated CRE strains in urine samples within 3.5 h. Thus, this biosensing strategy might have the potential for practical application in the rapid detection of various resistant bacteria.
