1. Integrated multiplexed microwave readout of silicon quantum dots in a cryogenic CMOS chip

Abstract

Solid-state quantum computers require classical electronics to control and readout individual qubits and to enable fast classical data processing [1-3]. Integrating both subsystems at deep cryogenic temperatures [4], where solid-state quantum processors operate best, may solve some major scaling challenges, such as system size and input/output (I/O) data management [5]. Spin qubits in silicon quantum dots (QDs) could be monolithically integrated with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronics using very-large-scale integration (VLSI) and thus leveraging over wide manufacturing experience in the semiconductor industry [6]. However, experimental demonstrations of integration using industrial CMOS at mK temperatures are still in their infancy. Here we present a cryogenic integrated circuit (IC) fabricated using industrial CMOS technology that hosts three key ingredients of a silicon-based quantum processor: QD arrays (arranged here in a non-interacting 3x3 configuration), digital electronics to minimize control lines using row-column addressing and analog LC resonators for multiplexed readout, all operating at 50 mK. With the microwave resonators (6-8 GHz range), we show dispersive readout of the charge state of the QDs and perform combined time- and frequency-domain multiplexing, enabling scalable readout while reducing the overall chip footprint. This modular architecture probes the limits towards the realization of a large-scale silicon quantum computer integrating quantum and classical electronics using industrial CMOS technology.

2. Quantum Transport in 40-nm MOSFETs at Deep-Cryogenic Temperatures

Abstract

In this letter, we characterize the electrical properties of commercial bulk 40-nm MOSFETs at room and deep cryogenic temperatures, with a focus on quantum information processing (QIP) applications. At 50 mK, the devices operate as classical FETs or quantum dot devices when either a high or low drain bias is applied, respectively. The operation in classical regime shows improved transconductance and subthreshold slope with respect to 300 K. In the quantum regime, all measured devices show Coulomb blockade. This is explained by the formation of quantum dots in the channel, for which a model is proposed. The variability in parameters, important for quantum computing scaling, is also quantified. Our results show that bulk 40-nm node MOSFETs can be readily used for the co-integration of cryo-CMOS classical-quantum circuits at deep cryogenic temperatures and that the variability approaches the uniformity requirements to enable shared control.

Abstract

Quantum computers require classical electronics to ensure fault-tolerant operation. To address compactness and scalability, it was proposed to implement such electronics as integrated circuits operating at cryogenic temperatures close to those at which quantum bits (qubits) operate. Circulators are among the most common blocks used in the qubit readout chain, but they are currently discrete devices with a bulky footprint, thus preventing large-scale system integration. For this reason, we present here a detailed description of the first fully integrated CMOS circulator operating from 300 K down to 4.2 K to be an integral part of cryogenic quantum computing platforms. At 300 K, the circuit's operating frequency is centered around 6.5 GHz with 28% fractional bandwidth, and it has 2.2-dB insertion loss, 2.4-dB noise figure, and 18-dB isolation while consuming 2.5-mW core power. These results are achieved thanks to a fully passive architecture based on LC all-pass filters, which allows achieving a 1.6\times increase in fractional bandwidth and the lowest power consumption with respect to the state of the art while using only 0.45 mm2 of core area. Abstract

In this paper, a broadband upconversion image-reject mixer integrating a quadrature signal generator is presented. The polyphase networks (PPNs ) are used to convert the single-ended local-oscillator input signal to quadrature signals. A pair of inductors is added to traditional PPN to enhance the return loss performance, while optimizing the image-reject ratio. A common-emitter tranconductance using the feedforward technique is applied to a quadrature active Gilbert mixer to obtain relative high linearity, and the optical solution for high-frequency applications is given and analyzed. An active differential to single totem-pole balun is applied as the output stage, which is well matched to load impedance and can provide medium output power. Measured results show excellent performance in the designed frequency from 400 MHz to 6 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Quantum computing holds the promise to solve many of today's intractable problems. A solid-state quantum computer (QC) is generally made of an array of qubits implemented in one of many solid-state technologies and operating at deep-cryogenic temperatures (10-to-20mK). Silicon spin qubits are a promising candidate for scalable QCs, due to their size, long coherence times and potential for co-integration with the required classical control and readout electronics. Recently, semiconductor spin qubits have been demonstrated to operate at ~1K, thus accelerating the achievement of a compact QC [1]. Classical qubit control electronics has also progressed, with the demonstration of fully-integrated control of spin qubits [2] and transmons [3] implemented in a cryo-CMOS technology. While a cryo-CMOS integrated circuit has been co-integrated with quantum dots [4], fully-integrated readout electronics has not yet been addressed in the literature.
