1. Codesigned counterdiabatic quantum optimization on a photonic quantum processor

Abstract

Codesign, an integral part of computer architecture referring to the information interaction in hardware-software stack, is able to boost the algorithm mapping and execution in the computer hardware. This well applies to the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era, where quantum algorithms and quantum processors both need to be shaped to allow for advantages in experimental implementations. The state-of-the-art quantum adiabatic optimization algorithm faces challenges for scaling up, where the deteriorating optimization performance is not necessarily alleviated by increasing the circuit depth given the noise in the hardware. The counterdiabatic term can be introduced to accelerate the convergence, but decomposing the unitary operator corresponding to the counterdiabatic terms into one and two-qubit gates may add additional burden to the digital circuit depth. In this work, we focus on the counterdiabatic protocol with a codesigned approach to implement this algorithm on a photonic quantum processor. The tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometer mesh provides rich programmable parameters for local and global manipulation, making it able to perform arbitrary unitary evolutions. Accordingly, we directly implement the unitary operation associated to the counterdiabatic quantum optimization on our processor without prior digitization. Furthermore, we develop and implement an optimized counterdiabatic method by tackling the higher-order many-body interaction terms. Moreover, we benchmark the performance in the case of factorization, by comparing the final success probability and the convergence speed. Abstract

Purpose: The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), also known as JUNO-TAO. Located close to one of the reactors of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, TAO will measure the antineutrino energy spectrum precisely as a reference spectrum for JUNO. The data acquisition (DAQ) system is designed to acquire data from the TAO readout electronics and process it with software trigger and data compression algorithms. The data storage bandwidth is limited by the onsite network to be less than 100 Mb/s. Methods: The system is designed based on a distributed architecture, with fully decoupled modules to facilitate customized design and implementation. It is divided into two main components: the data flow system and the online software. The online software serves as the foundation, providing the electronics configuration, the process management, the run control, and the information sharing. The data flow system facilitates continuous data acquisition from various electronic boards or trigger systems, assembles and processes raw data, and ultimately stores it on the disk. Results: The core functionality of the system has been designed and developed. The usability of the data flow system interface and the software trigger results have been verified during the pre-installation testing phase. Conclusion: The DAQ system has been deployed for the TAO experiment. It has also successfully been applied to the integration test of the detector and electronics prototypes.

3. The pole structures of the $X(1840)/X(1835)$ and the $X(1880)$

Abstract

Whether the $N\bar{N}$ interaction could form a state or not is a long standing question, even before the observation of the $p\bar{p}$ threshold enhancement in 2003. The recent high statistic measurement in the $J/\psi \to \gamma 3(\pi^+\pi^-)$ channel would provide a good opportunity to probe the nature of the peak structures around the $p\bar{p}$ threshold in various processes. By constructing the $N\bar{N}$ interaction respecting chiral symmetry, we extract the pole positions by fitting the $p\bar{p}$ and $3(\pi^+\pi^-)$ invariant mass distributions of the $J/\psi \to \gamma p \bar p$ and $J/\psi \to \gamma 3(\pi^+\pi^-)$ processes. The threshold enhancement in the $p\bar{p}$ invariant mass distribution is from the pole on the third Riemann sheet, which more couples to the isospin triplet channel. The broader structure in the $3(\pi^+\pi^-)$ invariant mass comes from the pole on the physical Riemann sheet, which more couples to the isospin singlet channel. Furthermore, the large compositeness indicates that there should exit $p\bar{p}$ resonance based on the current experimental data. In addition, we also see a clear threshold enhancement in the $n\bar{n}$ channel, but not as significant as that in $p\bar{p}$ channel, which is useful and compared with further experimental measurement., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

4. Weak Cosmic Censorship Conjecture Cannot be Violated in Gedanken Experiments

Abstract

We innovate a systematic investigation of the Weak Cosmic Censorship Conjecture (WCCC) using gedanken experiments involving black hole perturbations by test particles. We classify various WCCC violation scenarios proposed in recent decades, including Hubeny, mixed, and the latest Sorce-Wald (SW). We provide general formulae in each case, and resolve contradictions in numerous studies. Following SW type, our analysis reveals that WCCC depends on the sign choice of the parameter $W\equiv \big(\frac{\partial S}{\partial T}\big)_{Q_i; T=0}$ of the extremal black holes. $W > 0$ preserves WCCC and $W < 0$ would indicate potential violation. We show explicitly that $W>0$ for spherically-symmetric and static black holes, and for general case, we argue that it is protected by the black hole no-hair theorem. Abstract

We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $\tau/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $\tau/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

6. Gain-loss-engineering: a new platform for extreme anisotropic thermal photon tunneling

Abstract

We explore a novel approach to achieving anisotropic thermal photon tunneling, inspired by the concept of parity-time symmetry in quantum physics. Our method leverages the modulation of constitutive optical parameters, oscillating between loss and gain regimes. This modulation reveals a variety of distinct effects in thermal photon behavior and dispersion. Specifically, we identify complex tunneling modes through gain-loss engineering, which include thermal photonic defect states and Fermi-arc-like phenomena, which surpass those achievable through traditional polariton engineering. Abstract

On-chip integrated metasurface driven by in-plane guided waves is of great interests in various light field manipulation applications such as colorful augmented reality and holographic display. However, it remains a challenge to design colorful multichannel holography by a single on-chip metasurface. Here we present metasurfaces integrated on top of guided-wave photonic slab that achieves multi-channel colorful holographic light display. An end-to-end scheme is used to inverse design the metasurface for projecting off-chip preset multiple patterns. Particular examples are presented for customized patterns that were encoded into the metasurface with a single-cell meta-atom, working simultaneously at RGB color channels and for several different diffractive distance, with polarization dependence. Holographic images are generated at 18 independent channels with such a single-cell metasurface. The proposed design scheme is easy to implement and the resulting device is viable to fabrication, promising a plenty of applications in nanophotonics., Comment: 18 pages and 11 figures

We adopt the Reall-Santos method to obtain the quadratic curvature corrections to the thermodynamics of Myers-Perry rotating black holes in diverse dimensions. We consider the corrections in canonical and grand canonical ensembles, and also for fixed mass and angular momenta. We find that there exist inevitable divergences for generic rotation parameters so that the perturbative approach breaks down. Abstract

With the measurements of the decay $D^+_s \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S \pi^+$ by the BESIII Collaboration, we investigate this three-body weak decay via the chiral unitary approach for the final state interaction, where the resonances $S(980)$ and $S(1710)$ are dynamically reproduced with the interaction of eleven coupled channels, and the $W$-external and -internal emission mechanisms are considered at the quark level. Besides, we also take into account the contribution from the $P$-wave resonance $K^*(892)^+$ and make a combined fit of the $K^0_S K^0_S$ and $K^0_S \pi^+$ invariant mass spectra measured by the BESIII Collaboration. The fitted results show that the enhancement around 1.7 GeV in $K^0_S K^0_S$ mass spectrum is overlapped with two visible peaks, indicating the mixing signal originated from the resonances $a_0(1710)$ and $f_0(1710)$ due to their different poles (masses). Thus, the decay $D^+_s \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S \pi^+$ is helpful to reveal their molecular nature with the mixing signal, which can be more precisely measured in the future., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Phase modulation has scarcely been mentioned in diffusive systems since the diffusion process does not carry momentum like waves. Recently, the non-Hermitian physics provides a new perspective for understanding diffusion and shows prospects in the phase regulation of heat flow, for example, the discovery of anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry in diffusive systems. The precise control of thermal phase however remains elusive hitherto and can hardly be realized in APT-symmetric thermal systems due to the existence of phase oscillation. Here we construct the counterpart of APT-symmetric diffusive systems, i.e., PT-symmetric diffusive systems, which can achieve complete suppression of thermal phase oscillation. We find the real coupling of diffusive fields can be readily established through a strong convective background, where the decay-rate detuning is enabled by thermal metamaterial design. Moreover, we observe phase transition of PT symmetry breaking in diffusive systems with the symmetry-determined amplitude distribution and phase regulation of coupled temperature fields. Our work uncovers the existence of PT-symmetry in dissipative energy exchanges and provides a unique approach for harnessing the mass transfer of particles, the wave propagation in strongly scattering systems as well as thermal conduction.

Abstract

Photonic crystals (PCs) are periodic dielectric structures that severed as an excellent platform to manipulate light. A conventional way to guide/trap light via PCs is to introduce a line or point defect by removing or modifying several unit cells. Here we show that the light can be effectively guided and trapped in the glided photonic crystal interfaces (GPCIs). The projected band gap of GPCIs, which depends on the glide parameter, is characterized by a Dirac mass. Interestingly, the GPCIs with zero Dirac mass is a glide-symmetric waveguide featured with excellent transmission performance even in the presence of sharp corners and disorders. Moreover, placing two GPCIs with opposite Dirac mass together results in a photonic bound state due to the Jackiw-Rebbi theory. Our work provides an alternative way towards the design of ultracompact photonic devices such as GPCIs-induced coupled cavity-waveguide system and waveguide splitter.

Abstract

The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. Abstract

Video has become the predominant medium for information dissemination, driving the need for efficient video codecs. Recent advancements in learned video compression have shown promising results, surpassing traditional codecs in terms of coding efficiency. However, challenges remain in integrating fragmented techniques and incorporating new tools into existing codecs. In this paper, we comprehensively review the state-of-the-art CANF-VC codec and propose CANF-VC++, an enhanced version that addresses these challenges. We systematically explore architecture design, reference frame type, training procedure, and entropy coding efficiency, leading to substantial coding improvements. CANF-VC++ achieves significant Bj{\o}ntegaard-Delta rate savings on conventional datasets UVG, HEVC Class B and MCL-JCV, outperforming the baseline CANF-VC and even the H.266 reference software VTM. Our work demonstrates the potential of integrating advancements in video compression and serves as inspiration for future research in the field.

49. LRRC8A drives NADPH oxidase-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation in allergic rhinitis

Abstract

Abstract Objectives Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a complex disorder with variable pathogenesis. Increasing evidence suggests that the LRRC8A is involved in maintaining cellular stability, regulating immune cell activation and function, and playing significant roles in inflammation. However, the involvement of LRRC8A in AR inflammation and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Methods LRRC8A expression in AR patients, confirmed by qRT-PCR and Western blotting, was analyzed to investigate its relationship with the clinical characteristics of AR patients. In vitro, IL-13 stimulated HNEpCs to establish a Th2 inflammation model, with subsequent LRRC8A knockout or overexpression. NOX1/NOX4 inhibitor (GKT137831) and chloride channel inhibitor (DCPIB) were utilized to investigate AR development mechanisms during LRRC8A overexpression. An OVA-induced AR model with nasal mucosa LRRC8A knockdown confirmed LRRC8A's regulatory role in AR inflammation. Results LRRC8A mRNA and protein levels were significantly elevated in AR patients, positively correlating with NADPH oxidase subunits and Th2 inflammatory markers. In vitro, IL-13 stimulation of HNEpCs resulted in upregulation of LRRC8A and increased expression of NOX1, NOX4, and p22phox, along with mitochondrial dysfunction and NF-κB pathway activation. The knockout of LRRC8A reversed these effects. In nasal mucosal epithelial cells, DCPIB and GKT137831 completely blocked mitochondrial dysfunction caused by the overexpression of LRRC8A, which led to up-regulation of NOX1, NOX4, and p22phox. In vivo, knocking down LRRC8A reduced eosinophil infiltration, downregulated the expression of NOX1, NOX4, p22phox IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, and decreased NF-κB pathway activation. Conclusion LRRC8A drives the upregulation of NOX1, NOX4, and p22phox, leading to ROS overproduction and mitochondrial dysfunction. It also activates NF-κB, ultimately leading to nasal mucosal epithelial inflammation. LRRC8A may be a potential target for the treatment of AR.

Abstract

Abstract Many plants associate with endophytic microbes that improve root phosphorus (P) uptake. Understanding the interactions between roots and endophytes can enable efforts to improve P utilization. Here, we characterize the interactions between lateral roots of endophytes in a core collection of 50 rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) genotypes with differing sensitivities to low P conditions. With the correlation analysis result between bacterial abundance and plant physiological indices of rapeseeds, and inoculation experiments on plates and soil, we identify one Flavobacterium strain (C2) that significantly alleviates the P deficiency phenotype of rapeseeds. The underlying mechanisms are explored by performing the weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA), and conducting genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using Flavobacterium abundance as a quantitative trait. Under P-limited conditions, C2 regulates fatty acid and lipid metabolic pathways. For example, C2 improves metabolism of linoleic acid, which mediates root suberin biosynthesis, and enhances P uptake efficiency. In addition, C2 suppresses root jasmonic acid biosynthesis, which depends on α-linolenic acid metabolism, improving C2 colonization and activating P uptake. This study demonstrates that adjusting the endophyte composition can modulate P uptake in B. napus plants, providing a basis for developing agricultural microbial agents.
