Repeated practice of a perceptual task, termed "perceptual learning," can improve visual performance. Previously, the training thresholds were determined in two ways. One is that the stimulus corresponding to a certain level in individually set psychometric functions was selected as the training threshold. The other is that the certain stimulus was selected as the training threshold without consideration of individual differences. However, little is known about how the two training methods modulate perceptual learning. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of initial performance on patterns of motion perceptual learning under two methods-individually set or group averaged-for setting the training threshold. Thirty-six observers were randomly divided into individual and group thresholds. Psychometric functions, with the percentage correct as a function of coherence, were measured using the coherent motion direction identification task. For the individual threshold, each observer was trained at individualized coherence level, targeting 60% correct for each observer's psychometric function. For the group threshold, each observer was trained at one coherence level, targeting 60% correct in the group-averaged psychometric function. The threshold was reduced after training with the method of constant stimulus in both groups, indicating improvements following perceptual learning. Furthermore, observers with a poorer initial performance exhibited greater learning gains independent of the training method. Importantly, the correlation between the initial performance and learning gains was larger in the individual threshold than in the group threshold, suggesting the influence of the initial performance on the learning amount depends on the training method.

The classification of inhibitory control and the relationship between the subcomponents of inhibitory control have been the focus of many studies. This study mainly explored the influence of response inhibition training on interference control through event-related potential data. Forty college students were randomly divided into a training group and a control group. Two response inhibition tasks were used as training tasks and the Stroop and go/no-go tasks were used with electroencephalogram monitoring to evaluate students' abilities in the two kinds of inhibitory control. The results showed that the conflict effect of the training group significantly improved after training compared with those of the control group. In the training group, the N2 effect was enhanced not only in the no-go stimulation in the training task but also in the incongruent stimulation in the untrained Stroop task and there was a correlation in the enhancement of the N2 effect between the two tasks. To some extent, this study provided neuroscientific evidence that response inhibition training can transfer to interference control.

Various glares can decrease visual performance and cause discomfort, thus increasing drivers’ risk for traffic accidents in real life. The current study aimed to systematically investigate glare sensitivity in the central and peripheral visual fields by measuring contrast sensitivity function (CSF) under nonglare, steady glare, and transient glare conditions. Nine observers with normal visual acuity in the dominant eye were enrolled. The CSF in central and peripheral vision (the 5° upper left visual field) was measured in a mesopic environment while the stimulus was displayed under three conditions: nonglare, steady glare, and transient glare. An orientation identification task was used to obtain the CSF. After the experiment, the observers were asked to report their level of discomfort in the presence of the glare. The area under the log CSF (AULCSF) and cut-off spatial frequency served as indicators of visual performance. In agreement with previous studies, both steady and transient glare reduced the AULCSF and cut-off frequency. However, the AULCSF and cut-off frequency were reduced more for central vision than for nearly peripheral vision. In addition, the extent of the decreases in the AULCSF and cut-off frequency was greater for steady glare than for transient glare; in contrast, more discomfort was associated with transient glare than steady glare.

Lévy walks are continuous-time random-walk processes with a spatiotemporal coupling of jump lengths and waiting times. We here apply the Hermite polynomial method to study the behavior of LWs with power-law walking time density for four different cases. First we show that the known result for the infinite density of an unconfined, unbiased LW is consistently recovered. We then derive the asymptotic behavior of the probability density function (PDF) for LWs in a constant force field, and we obtain the corresponding qth-order moments. In a harmonic external potential we derive the relaxation dynamic of the LW. For the case of a Poissonian walking time an exponential relaxation behavior is shown to emerge. Conversely, a power-law decay is obtained when the mean walking time diverges. Finally, we consider the case of an unconfined, unbiased LW with decaying speed v(τ)=v_{0}/sqrt[τ]. When the mean walking time is finite, a universal Gaussian law for the position-PDF of the walker is obtained explicitly.

Based on the recognition of the huge change of the transport properties for diffusion particles in non-static media, we consider a Lévy walk model subjected to an external constant force in non-static media. Since the physical and comoving coordinates of non-static media are related by scale factor, we equivalently transfer the process from physical coordinate into comoving coordinate and derive the master equation governing the probability density function of the position of the particles in comoving coordinate. Utilizing the Hermite orthogonal polynomial expansions, some statistical properties are obtained, including the asymptotic behaviors of the first two moments in both coordinates and kurtosis. For some representative types of non-static media and Lévy walks, the striking and interesting phenomena originating from the interplay between non-static media, external force, and intrinsic stochastic motion are observed. The stationary distribution are also analyzed for some cases through numerical simulations.

Anthocyanin accumulation is transcriptionally regulated by the MYB–bHLH–WD40 complex. Light is indispensable for anthocyanin accumulation, and light-inducible MYB and HY5 were considered to promote anthocyanin accumulation in many fruits. Whether and how light-inducible bHLH transcription factor and HY5 regulate anthocyanin synthesis in strawberry is unknown. In this study, we identified a bHLH transcription factor, FvbHLH9, which was induced by light as well as FvHY5, and found that, similar to FvHY5, the transient overexpression and interference FvbHLH9 in strawberry fruits can promote and decrease anthocyanin accumulation, respectively, indicating FvbHLH9 functions as a positive regulator of anthocyanin biosynthesis. Furthermore, we confirmed that both FvHY5 and FvbHLH9 specifically bind to the promoter region of some key enzyme genes, including FvDFR, and the expression of FvDFR was activated through the heterodimer formation between FvHY5 and FvbHLH9. Finally, we confirmed that FvbHLH9-promoted anthocyanin accumulation is dependent on HY5–bHLH heterodimerisation in Arabidopsis. Our findings provide insights into a mechanism involving the synergistic regulation of light-dependent coloration and anthocyanin biosynthesis via a HY5–bHLH heterodimer formed by the interaction of FvHY5 and FvbHLH9 in strawberry fruits.

According to the theory that bubble clouds have strong scattering properties in the water, effective medium theory (EMT) based on bubble clouds has been developed for a new kind of target simulator available for multi-static sonar experiments. According to the theory, the effects of the porosity of the bubble clouds and the size of the simulator on the backscattering strength of the target simulator are investigated. The optimal parameters for designing the target simulator are given by simulation analysis. Finally, by comparing with the traditional target simulator design scheme, it is shown that the target simulator designed based on EMT theory has the characteristics of low-frequency bandwidth, high target strength, small size, low cost, and application flexibility.

Flavonoids belong to the family of polyphenolic secondary metabolites and contribute to fruit quality traits. It has been shown that MBW complexes (MYB-bHLH-WD40) regulate the flavonoids biosynthesis in different plants, but only a limited number of MBW complexes have been identified in strawberry species in general. In this study, we identified 112 R2R3-MYB proteins in woodland strawberry; 12 of them were found to have potential functions in regulating flavonoids biosynthesis by phylogenetic analysis. qRT-PCR assays showed that FvMYB3, FvMYB9, FvMYB11, FvMYB22, FvMYB64, and FvMYB105 mostly expressed at green stage of fruit development, aligned with proanthocyanidins accumulation; FvMYB10 and FvMYB41 showed higher expression levels at turning and ripe stages, aligned with anthocyanins accumulation. These results suggest that different MYBs might be involved in flavonoids biosynthesis at specific stages. Furthermore, FvMYB proteins were demonstrated to interact with FvbHLH proteins and induce expression from the promoters of CHS2 and DFR2 genes, which encode key enzymes in flavonoids biosynthesis. The co-expression of FvMYB and FvbHLH proteins in strawberry fruits also promoted the accumulation of proanthocyanidins. These findings confirmed and provided insights into the biofunction of MBW components in the regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis in woodland strawberry.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has received considerable attention as a new option to facilitate cognitive ability or rehabilitation in healthy populations or in individuals with neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the tDCS effect varies widely, possibly because individual differences in initial performance have frequently been ignored in previous research. Here, we aimed to examine the influence of initial performance on inhibitory control after tDCS. Fifty-six participants were randomly divided into three groups: anodal, cathodal and sham stimulation. The go/no-go task, stop-signal task and Stroop task were performed to measure inhibitory control before and immediately after tDCS. tDCS was applied to the F4 site (international 10–20 system), corresponding to the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC), for 20 min with an intensity of 1.5 mA. Neither anodal nor cathodal stimulation had significant effects on the performance of these three tasks at the group level in comparison with sham stimulation. However, the analyses at the individual level only showed a negative relationship between baseline performance and the magnitude of change in go/no-go task performance following cathodal tDCS, indicating the dependence of the change amount on initial performance, with greater gains (or losses) observed in individuals with poorer (or better) initial performance. Together, the initial performance modulates the proactive inhibitory effect of cathodal tDCS of the rDLPFC. Additionally, the rDLPFC plays a crucial role in proactive inhibition.

Implementation intention is a kind of behaviour choice strategy in which individuals adopt specific and definite behaviour patterns to achieve behavioural goals. The standard form is 'if something happens, then I will do something'. Previous studies have shown that implementation intention strategy is a fast and effective mental skill with notable advantages. However, adding the requirement of 'deliberate' to the implementation plan will increase the probability of decision adjustment to a certain extent. In this study, the classic Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) was selected as the evaluation index of risk decision-making, and the 'deliberate' implementation intention was adopted to explore the impact of this behavioural strategy on risk selection. The recruited medical students were divided into two groups: the implementation intention group (n = 37) and the control group (n = 34). The baseline assessment for the BART was performed by all participants, and the intensive training of 'deliberate' implementation intention to 'make as much money as possible' was conducted before the post-test decision-making after one week. The adjusted BART (adj BART) value and AvgIncome were significantly higher than those at baseline in the implementation intention group(adj BART value: baseline 12.63 ± 2.90, post-test: 14.78 ± 2.66, F = 15.978, p < 0.001, η 2 = 0.307; AvgIncome: baseline 12.43 ± 2.56, post-test 15.00 ± 2.57, F = 20.953, p < 0.001, η 2 = 0.368). The mixed-model ANOVAs showed that there was a significant interaction between test time and group (adj BART value: F = 4.859, p = 0.031, η 2 = 0.066; AvgIncome: F = 4.261, p = 0.043, η 2 = 0.058). Conclusion: The implementation of 'deliberate' intention can help medical students make more rational judgements in risk decision-making tasks, avoid over conservative behaviour and obtain more benefits.

A stochastic process with movement, return, and rest phases is considered in this paper. For the movement phase, the particles move following the dynamics of Gaussian process or ballistic type of L\'evy walk, and the time of each movement is random. For the return phase, the particles will move back to the origin with a constant velocity or acceleration or under the action of a harmonic force after each movement, so that this phase can also be treated as a non-instantaneous resetting. After each return, a rest with a random time at the origin follows. The asymptotic behaviors of the mean squared displacements with different kinds of movement dynamics, random resting time, and returning are discussed. The stationary distributions are also considered when the process is localized. Cryptochromes are blue light photoreceptors that mediate various light responses in plants and mammals. The heterotrimeric G-protein is known to regulate various physiological processes in plants and mammals. In Arabidopsis, cryptochrome 1 (CRY1) and the G-protein β subunit AGB1 act antagonistically to regulate stomatal development. The molecular mechanism by which CRY1 and AGB1 regulate this process remains unknown. Here, we show that Arabidopsis CRY1 acts partially through AGB1, and AGB1 acts through SPEECHLESS (SPCH), a master transcription factor that drives stomatal initiation and proliferation, to regulate stomatal development. We demonstrate that AGB1 physically interacts with SPCH to block the bHLH DNA-binding domain of SPCH and inhibit its DNA-binding activity. Moreover, we demonstrate that photoexcited CRY1 represses the interaction of AGB1 with SPCH to release AGB1 inhibition of SPCH DNA-binding activity, leading to the expression of SPCH-target genes promoting stomatal development. Taken together, our results suggest that the mechanism by which CRY1 promotes stomatal development involves positive regulation of the DNA-binding activity of SPCH mediated by CRY1 inhibition of the AGB1-SPCH interaction. We propose that the antagonistic regulation of SPCH DNA-binding activity by CRY1 and AGB1 may allow plants to balance light and G-protein signaling and optimize stomatal density and pattern.

We consider a one-dimensional Brownian search in the presence of trapping. The diffusion equation of the particle is represented by a memory kernel that enters the general waiting time probability density function. We find the general form of the first arrival time density, search reliability and efficiency and analyze several special cases of the memory kernel. We also analyze the Lévy search in the presence of trapping in cases of single and multiple targets, as well as combined Lévy–Brownian search strategies in case of a single target. The presented results are general and could be of interest for further investigation of different optimal search strategies, as well as in the animal foraging or spreading of contamination particles in the environment.

L\'evy walk process is one of the most effective models to describe superdiffusion, which underlies some important movement patterns and has been widely observed in the micro and macro dynamics. From the perspective of random walk theory, here we investigate the dynamics of L\'evy walks under the influences of the constant force field and the one combined with harmonic potential. Phytochrome B (phyB), the primary red light photoreceptor, promotes photomorphogenesis in Arabidopsis by interacting with the basic helix-loop-helix transcriptional factor PIF3 and inducing its phosphorylation and degradation. Heterotrimeric G proteins are known to regulate various developmental processes in plants and animals. In Arabidopsis, the G-protein β subunit AGB1 is known to repress photomorphogenesis. However, whether and how phyB and AGB1 coordinately regulate photomorphogenesis are largely unknown. Here we show that phyB physically interacts with AGB1 in a red light-dependent manner and that AGB1 interacts directly with PIF3. Moreover, we demonstrate that the AGB1-PIF3 interaction inhibits the association of PIF3 with phyB, leading to reduced phosphorylation and degradation of PIF3, whereas the phyB-AGB1 interaction represses the association of PIF3 with AGB1, resulting in enhanced phosphorylation and degradation of PIF3. Our results suggest that phyB and AGB1 antagonistically regulate PIF3 stability by dynamically interacting with each other and PIF3. This dynamic mechanism may allow plants to balance phyB and G-protein signaling to optimize photomorphogenesis.

Cryptochromes are photolyase-like, blue-light (BL) photoreceptors found in various organisms. Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) cryptochromes (CRYs; CRY1, and CRY2) mediate many light responses including photoperiodic floral initiation. Cryptochromes interact with COP1 and SPA1, causing the stabilization of CONSTANS (CO) and promotion of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) transcription and flowering. The AP2-like transcriptional factor TOE1 negatively regulates FT expression and flowering by indirectly inhibiting CO transcriptional activation activity and directly binding to FT. Here, we demonstrate that CRY1 and CRY2 physically interact with TOE1 and TOE2 in a BL-dependent manner in flowering regulation. Genetic studies showed that mutation of TOE1 and TOE2 partially suppresses the late-flowering phenotype of cry1 cry2 mutant plants. BL-triggered interactions of CRY2 with TOE1 and TOE2 promote the dissociation of TOE1 and TOE2 from CO, resulting in alleviation of their inhibition of CO transcriptional activity and enhanced transcription of FT. Furthermore, we show that CRY2 represses TOE1 binding to the regulatory element within the Block E enhancer of FT. These results reveal that TOE1 and TOE2 act as downstream components of CRY2, thus partially mediating CRY2 regulation of photoperiodic flowering through modulation of CO activity and FT transcription.

L\'evy walks (LWs) are spatiotemporally coupled random-walk processes describing superdiffusive heat conduction in solids, propagation of light in disordered optical materials, motion of molecular motors in living cells, or motion of animals, humans, robots, and viruses. We here investigate a key feature of LWs, their response to an external harmonic potential. In this generic setting for confined motion we demonstrate that LWs equilibrate exponentially and may assume a bimodal stationary distribution. We also show that the stationary distribution has a horizontal slope next to a reflecting boundary placed at the origin, in contrast to correlated superdiffusive processes. A physical composite nanochitin/microemulsion (NCh/ME) hydrogel for a prolonged release of hydrophobic compounds (drugs) under in vitro physiological conditions was investigated. A strong physical hydrogel was prepared by an alkali gas phase coagulation bath composting NCh with an oil in water ME in which a hydrophobic dye, Nile Red (NR), was embedded to simulate a drug release process. Different release conditions, such as concentration of NCh, diameter of ME, temperature and specific surface areas, were studied. The results showed that the NCh/ME composite hydrogel effectively encapsulated NR with a prolonged release period of 60 h in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS pH 7.4, similar to physiological conditions), which demonstrated the significance of NCh/ME composite hydrogels for hydrophobic compound (drug) delivery.

Levy walk is a fundamental model with applications ranging from quantum physics to paths of animal foraging. Taking animal foraging as an example, a natural idea that comes to one's mind is to introduce the multiple internal states for dealing with the dependence of the PDF of waiting time on the energy of the animal and richness of the food at a particular location, etc; the framework can also be used to model the moving trajectories of smart animals without returning to the directions or locations which they come from immediately. After building the Levy walk model with multiple internal states and deriving the governing equation of the distribution of the positions of the particles, some applications are discussed with specific transition matrices. Cryptochromes (CRYs) are blue light photoreceptors that mediate a variety of light responses in plants and animals, including photomorphogenesis, flowering, and circadian rhythms. The signaling mechanism by which Arabidopsis thaliana cryptochromes CRY1 and CRY2 promote photomorphogenesis involves direct interactions with COP1, a RING motif-containing E3 ubiquitin ligase, and its enhancer SPA1. Brassinosteroid (BR) is a key phytohormone involved in the repression of photomorphogenesis, and here, we show that the signaling mechanism of Arabidopsis CRY1 involves the inhibition of BR signaling. CRY1 and CRY2 physically interact with BES1-INTERACTING MYC-LIKE1 (BIM1), a basic helix-loop-helix protein. BIM1, in turn, interacts with and enhances the activity of BRI1-EMS SUPPRESSOR1 (BES1), a master transcription factor in the BR signaling pathway. In addition, CRY1 and CRY2 interact specifically with dephosphorylated BES1, the physiologically active form of BES1 that is activated by BR in a blue light-dependent manner. The CRY1-BES1 interaction leads to both the inhibition of BES1 DNA binding activity and the repression of its target gene expression. Our study suggests that the blue light-dependent, BR-induced interaction of CRY1 with BES1 is a tightly regulated mechanism by which plants optimize photomorphogenesis according to the availability of external light and internal BR signals.
