Abstract The UNet architecture, based on convolutional neural networks (CNN), has demonstrated its remarkable performance in medical image analysis. However, it faces challenges in capturing long-range dependencies due to the limited receptive fields and inherent bias of convolutional operations. Recently, numerous transformer-based techniques have been incorporated into the UNet architecture to overcome this limitation by effectively capturing global feature correlations. However, the integration of the Transformer modules may result in the loss of local contextual information during the global feature fusion process. In this work, we propose a 2D medical image segmentation model called multi-scale cross perceptron attention network (MCPA). The MCPA consists of three main components: an encoder, a decoder, and a Cross Perceptron. The Cross Perceptron first captures the local correlations using multiple Multi-scale Cross Perceptron modules, facilitating the fusion of features across scales. The resulting multi-scale feature vectors are then spatially unfolded, concatenated, and fed through a Global Perceptron module to model global dependencies. Considering the high computational cost of using 3D neural network models, and the fact that many important clinical data can only be obtained in two dimensions, our MCPA focuses on 2D medical image segmentation. Furthermore, we introduce a progressive dual-branch structure (PDBS) to address the semantic segmentation of the image involving finer tissue structures. This structure gradually shifts the segmentation focus of MCPA network training from large-scale structural features to more sophisticated pixel-level features. We evaluate our proposed MCPA model on several publicly available medical image datasets from different tasks and devices, including the open large-scale dataset of CT (Synapse), MRI (ACDC), and widely used 2D medical imaging datasets captured by fundus camera (DRIVE, CHASE $$\_$$ _ DB1, HRF), and OCTA (ROSE). The experimental results show that our MCPA model achieves state-of-the-art performance.

In situ temperature monitoring has become extremely imperative in high-temperature harsh environments and polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) as sensing materials have attracted great attention. However, the stability and oxidation/corrosion resistance of PDCs cannot be simultaneously achieved at the moment, limiting their practical application. Herein, polymer-derived SiAlBCN ceramics were synthesized via polymer conversion method under different pyrolysis temperatures. Their microstructure evolution, high temperature sensing properties, and stability were investigated in detail. The results show that the amorphous SiAlBCN phase grows more orderly and the size of the free carbon phase enlarges with the increasing temperature. The defect concentration displays a decreasing tendency. Concurrently, the SiAlBCN ceramics as sensing materials exhibit a good temperature–resistance property from roo temperature to 1100 ℃. The fabricated SiAlBCN temperature sensor possesses excellent stability, repeatability, and accuracy. Moreover, SiAlBCN ceramics exhibit distinguished oxidation/corrosion resistance after 100 h treatment at 1200 ℃ in a water/oxygen environment, which is attributed to their low corrosive rate constant (0.57 mg/(cm2·h)) and oxidative rate constant (3.43 mg2/(cm4·h)). Therefore, polymer-derived SiAlBCN ceramics as sensing materials, which possess outstanding stability and oxidation/corrosion resistance, have great potential for in-situ monitoring of extreme environmental temperatures in the future.

Summary: Sunitinib, a primary treatment for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), frequently encounters the challenge of resistance development. Metabolic reprogramming, a characteristic change in ccRCC, is likely linked to this resistance. Our research revealed a notable decrease in the expression of the key metabolic gene ABAT in ccRCC, which contributed to diminished sensitivity to sunitinib. Downregulation of ABAT led to an increase in the intracellular level of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), triggering abnormal activation of the G-protein-coupled receptor GABA-B. This activation resulted in increased transactivation of the tyrosine kinase receptors SYK and LYN, thereby reducing the antitumor and antiangiogenic properties of sunitinib. However, the application of SYK and LYN inhibitors successfully inhibited this effect. The transactivation of SYK and LYN caused resistance to the antiangiogenic effects of sunitinib through the upregulation of PGF protein levels. Furthermore, the combined application of an LYN inhibitor with sunitinib has been shown to enhance therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been extensively investigated in the field of cancer, among which, lncRNA ladybird homeobox 2-antisense RNA 1 (LBX2-AS1) has been demonstrated to exert carcinogenic effects on a variety of malignancies. However, the biological functions of LBX2-AS1 in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) have not been explicitly elucidated. Methods Arraystar lncRNA chip and qRT-PCR verify the expression of LncRNA LBX2-AS1 in ccRCC. CCK-8 assay and cell cloning assay were used to assess the proliferative capacity of ccRCC cells. Migration abilities were quantified by scratch assay and transwell assay. Potential molecular signaling pathways were determined by high-throughput whole transcriptomics analysis. WB analysis was performed to validate the relationship between LBX2-AS1 and key molecules of mitophagy pathway. The effect of LBX2-AS1 on mitophagy was observed by laser confocal microscopy. Rescue experiments further validated the role of downstream gene FOXO3A in the LBX2-AS1 signaling pathway. Finally, the authentic effect of LBX2-AS1 was verified in vivo. Results LncRNA LBX2-AS1 was over expressed in ccRCC tissues and could enhance the proliferation and migration of ccRCC cells. Autophagic pathway was identified as a possible mechanism involved in the oncogenic effect of LBX2-AS1. Mitophagy levels were observed in LBX2-AS1 low-expressing cells through laser confocal microscopy. Knockdown of LBX2-AS1 significantly elevated mitophagy levels as observed using laser confocal microscopy and led to FOXOA3 decreasing in and BNIP3L and LC3 enrichment. Meanwhile, LBX2-AS1 knocking down dampened the proliferation of ccRCC cells in vivo.

Carbon dioxide is one of the most influential greenhouse gases affecting human life. CO2 data can be obtained through three methods: ground-based, airborne, and satellite-based observations. However, ground-based monitoring is typically composed of sparsely distributed stations, while airborne monitoring has limited coverage and spatial resolution; they cannot fully reflect the spatiotemporal distribution of CO2. Satellite remote sensing plays a crucial role in monitoring the global distribution of atmospheric CO2, offering high observation accuracy and wide coverage. However, satellite remote sensing still faces spatiotemporal constraints, such as interference from clouds (or aerosols) and limitations from satellite orbits, which can lead to significant data loss. Therefore, the reconstruction of satellite-based CO2 data becomes particularly important. This article summarizes methods for the reconstruction of satellite-based CO2 data, including interpolation, data fusion, and super-resolution reconstruction techniques, and their advantages and disadvantages, it also provides a comprehensive overview of the classification and applications of super-resolution reconstruction techniques. Finally, the article offers future perspectives, suggesting that ideas like image super-resolution reconstruction represent the future trend in the field of satellite-based CO2 data reconstruction.

With the rapid development of satellite remote sensing technology, carbon-cycle research, as a key focus of global climate change, has also been widely developed in terms of carbon source/sink-research methods. The internationally recognized “top-down” approach, which is based on satellite observations, is an important means to verify greenhouse gas-emission inventories. This article reviews the principles, categories, and development of satellite detection payloads for greenhouse gases and introduces inversion algorithms and datasets for satellite remote sensing of XCO2. It emphasizes inversion methods based on machine learning and assimilation algorithms. Additionally, it presents the technology and achievements of carbon-assimilation systems used to estimate carbon fluxes. Finally, the article summarizes and prospects the future development of carbon-assimilation inversion to improve the accuracy of estimating and monitoring Earth’s carbon-cycle processes.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the primary cause of cancer mortality. Herein, we aimed to establish and verify a prognostic model consisting of endoplasmic reticulum stress and apoptosis related genes (ERAGs) to predict patient survival. Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was used to download gene expression and clinical data to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Using univariate Cox regression analysis and the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO)-penalized Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, the prognostic ERAGs were screened. The predictive performance was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Furthermore, a nomogram model incorporating clinical parameters and risk scores was constructed and subsequently evaluated using ROC and KM analysis. The correlation analysis, mutation analysis, functional enrichment analysis, and immune infiltration analysis were employed to investigate the specific mechanism of ERAGs. We also used Quantitative Real-Time PCR (RT-qPCR) to verify the differential expression of DE-ERAGs between the breast cancer cell line and mammary epithelial cell line. Results: We constructed a prognostic signature comprising 16 ERAGs. ROC, KM analysis and the nomogram model demonstrated high effectiveness in accurately predicting the overall survival (OS) of BRCA patients. The results of these analysis could provide reference for further mechanism exploration. Conclusion: We developed and assessed a novel molecular predictive model for breast cancer that focuses on endoplasmic reticulum stress and apoptosis in this study. It is a valuable complement to the existing prognostic prediction models for breast cancer.

ProposeThis meta-analysis aimed to determine whether 3D-printed artificial vertebral bodies (AVBs) have superior clinical efficacy compared to conventional titanium mesh cages (TMCs) for spinal reconstruction after total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) for spinal tumors.MethodsElectronic databases, including PubMed, OVID, ScienceDirect, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, WANFANG, and CNKI, were searched to identify clinical trials investigating 3D-printed AVB versus conventional TMC from inception to August 2023. Data on the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, preoperative and postoperative Frankel classification of spinal cord injury, vertebral body subsidence, and early complications were collected from eligible studies for a meta-analysis. Data were analyzed using Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 14.0.ResultsNine studies assessing 374 patients were included. The results revealed significant differences between the 3D-printed AVB and conventional TMC groups with regard to operation time (P = 0.04), intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.004), postoperative VAS score (P = 0.02), vertebral body subsidence (P < 0.0001), and early complications (P = 0.02). Conversely, the remaining preoperative VAS score and Frankel classifications (pre-and postoperative) did not differ significantly between the groups.ConclusionThe 3D-printed AVB in spinal reconstruction after TES for spinal tumors has the advantages of a short operative time, little intraoperative blood loss, weak postoperative pain, low occurrence of vertebral body subsidence and early complications, and a significant curative effect. Abstract Background In recent years, researchers have proposed a number of adjuvant methods for extended curettage of giant cell tumors of the bone. However, various schemes have significant differences in efficacy and safety. Therefore, this article will describe an empirical expanded curettage protocol, ‘triple clear’, in detail to show the effect of the efficient surgical protocol. Method Patients with Campanacci grades II and III primary GCTB who were treated with either SR (n = 39) or TC (n = 41) were included. Various perioperative clinical indicators, including the therapy modality, operation time, Campanacci grade, and filling material were recorded and compared. The pain level was determined by the visual analog scale. Limb function was determined by the Musculoskeletal Tumour Society (MSTS) score. Follow-up time, recurrence rates, reoperation rates, and complication rates were also recorded and compared. Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are man-made chemicals used in the manufacture of many products with water and dirt repellent properties. Many diseases have been proved to be related to the exposure of PFCs, including breast fibroadenoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer and leydig cell adenoma. However, whether the PFCs promote the progression of prostate cancer remains unclear. In this work, through comprehensive bioinformatics analysis, we discovered the correlation between the prostate cancer and five PFCs using Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases. In addition, further analysis showed that several PFCs-related genes demonstrated strong prognostic value for prostate cancer patients. The survival analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves revealed that PFCs-related genes based prognostic model held great predictive value for the prognosis of prostate cancer, which could potentially serve as an independent risk factor in the future. In vitro experiments verified the promotive role of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) in the growth of prostate cancer cells. This study provided novel insights into understanding the role of PFCs in prostate cancer and brought attention to the environmental association with cancer risks and progression.

Carbon satellites are an important observation tool for analyzing ground carbon emission. From the perspective of the Earth’s scale, the spatiotemporal sparse characteristics of raw data observed from carbon satellite requires the accurate interpolation of data, and based on only this work, people predict future carbon emission trends and formulate appropriate management and conservation strategies. The existing research work has not fully considered the close correlation between data and seasons, as well as the characteristics accumulated over a long time scale. In this paper, firstly, by employing extreme random forests and auxiliary data, we reconstruct a daily average CO2 dataset at a resolution of 0.25°, and achieve a validated determination coefficient of 0.92. Secondly, introducing technologies such as Time Convolutional Networks (TCN), Channel Attention Mechanism (CAM), and Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM), we conduct atmospheric CO2 concentration interpolation and predictions. When conducting predictive analysis for the Yangtze River Delta region, we train the model by using quarterly data from 2016 to 2020; the correlation coefficient in summer is 0.94, and in winter it is 0.91. These experimental data indicate that compared to other algorithms, this algorithm has a significantly better performance.

Objective To compare the biomechanical properties of percutaneous cement discoplasty (PCD) in the spinal column between different implant‐endplate friction. Methods A validated L3‐Scarumfinite element (FE) model was modified for simulation. In the PCD model, the L4/5 level was modified based on model 1 (M1) and model 2 (M2). In M1, the interaction between bone cement and endplate was defined as face‐to‐face contact with a friction coefficient of 0.3; in M2, the contact was defined as a Tie constraint. 7.5 N m moments of four physiological motions and axial load of 15, 100 and 400 N preload were imposed at the top of L3. The range of motion (ROM) and interface stress analysis of endplates, annulus fibrosus and bone cement of the operated level were calculated for comparisons among the three models. Results The ROM of M1 and M2 increased when compared with the intact model during flexion (FL) (17.5% vs 10.0%), extension (EX) (8.8% vs −8.8%), left bending (LB) (19.0% vs −17.2%) and left axial rotation (LR) (34.6% vs −3.8%). The stress of annulus fibrosus in M1 and M2 decreased in FL (−48.4% vs −57.5%), EX (−25.7% vs −14.7%), LB (−47.5% vs −52.4%), LR (−61.4% vs −68.7%) and axis loading of 100 N (−41.5% vs −15.3%), and 400 N (−27.9% vs −27.3%). The stress of upper endplate of M1 and M2 increased in FL (24.6% vs 24.7%), LB (82.2% vs 89.5%), LR (119% vs 62.4%) and axis loading of 100 N (64.6% vs 45.5%), and 400 N (58.2% vs 24.3%), but was similar in EX (2.9% vs 0.3%). The stress of lower endplate of M1 and M2 increased in FL (170.9% vs 175.0%), EX (180.8% vs 207.7%), LB (302.6% vs 274.7%), LR (332.4% vs 132.8%) and axis loading of 100 N (350.7% vs 168.6%), and 400 N (165.2% vs 106.7%). Conclusion Percutaneous cement discoplasty procedure could make effect on the mobility or stiffness. The fusion of bone cement and endplate might have more biomechanical advantages, including of the decreasing rate of implant subsidence and dislocation, and the increase spine stability.

Abstract Background Near-infrared (NIR) autofluorescence detection is an effective method for identifying parathyroid glands (PGs) in thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy. Fiber optical probes provide quantitative autofluorescence measurements for PG detection owing to its high sensitivity and high excitation light cut-off efficiency at a fixed detection distance. However, an optical fiber probe lacks the imaging capability and cannot map the autofluorescence distribution on top of normal tissue background. Therefore, there is a need for intraoperative mapping of PGs with high sensitivity and imaging resolution. Methods We have developed a fluorescence scanning and projection (FSP) system that combines a scanning probe and a co-axial projector for intraoperative localization and in situ display of PGs. Some of the key performance characteristics, including spatial resolution and sensitivity for detection, spatial resolution for imaging, dynamic time latency, and PG localization capability, are characterized and verified by benchtop experiments. Clinical utility of the system is simulated by a fluorescence-guided PG localization surgery on a tissue-simulating phantom and validated in an ex vivo experiment. Results The system is able to detect indocyanine green (ICG) solution of 5 pM at a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Additionally, it has a maximal projection error of 0.92 mm, an averaged projection error of 0.5 ± 0.23 mm, and an imaging resolution of 748 μm at a working distance ranging from 35 to 55 cm. The dynamic testing yields a short latency of 153 ± 54 ms, allowing for intraoperative scanning on target tissue during a surgical intervention. The simulated fluorescence-guided PG localization surgery has validated the system’s capability to locate PG phantom with operating room ambient light interference. The simulation experiment on the PG phantom yields a position detection bias of 0.36 ± 0.17 mm, and an area intersection over unit (IoU) of 76.6% ± 6.4%. Fluorescence intensity attenuates exponentially with the thickness of covered tissue over the PG phantom, indicating the need to remove surrounding tissue in order to reveal the weak autofluorescence signal from PGs. The ex vivo experiment demonstrates the technical feasibility of the FSP system for intraoperative PG localization with accuracy. Conclusion We have developed a novel probe-based imaging and navigation system with high sensitivity for fluorescence detection, capability for fluorescence image reconstruction, multimodal image fusion and in situ PG display function. Our studies have demonstrated its clinical potential for intraoperative localization and in situ display of PGs in thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy.

Microglia are the resident macrophages in the brain, which play a critical role in post-stroke neuroinflammation. Accordingly, targeting neuroinflammation could be a promising strategy to improve ischemic stroke outcomes. Ethyl ferulate (EF) has been confirmed to possess anti-inflammatory properties in several disease models, including acute lung injury, retinal damage and diabetes-associated renal injury. However, the effects of EF on microglial activation and the resolution of post-stroke neuroinflammation remains unknown. Here, we found that EF suppressed pro-inflammatory response triggered by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation in primary microglia and BV2 cell lines, as well as post-stroke neuroinflammation in an in vivo transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) stroke model in C57BL/6 mice, consequently ameliorating ischemic brain injury. Furthermore, EF could directly bind and inhibit the activity of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) to reduce pro-inflammatory response. Taken together, our study identified a MAO-B inhibitor, Ethyl ferulate, as an active compound with promising potentials for suppressing post-stroke neuroinflammation.

PurposeNephron-sparing surgery (NSS) is a mainstream treatment for localized renal tumors. Segmental renal artery clamping (SRAC) is commonly used in NSS. Automatic and precise segmentations of renal artery trees are required to improve the workflow of SRAC in NSS. In this study, we developed a tridimensional kidney perfusion (TKP) model based on deep learning technique to automatically demonstrate renal artery segmentation, and verified the precision and feasibility during laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (PN).MethodsThe TKP model was established based on convolutional neural network (CNN), and the precision was validated in porcine models. From April 2018 to January 2020, TKP model was applied in laparoscopic PN in 131 patients with T1a tumors. Demographics, perioperative variables, and data from the TKP models were assessed. Indocyanine green (ICG) with near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging was applied after clamping and dice coefficient was used to evaluate the precision of the model.ResultsThe precision of the TKP model was validated in porcine models with the mean dice coefficient of 0.82. Laparoscopic PN was successfully performed in all cases with segmental renal artery clamping (SRAC) under TKP model’s guidance. The mean operation time was 100.8 min; the median estimated blood loss was 110 ml. The ischemic regions recorded in NIRF imaging were highly consistent with the perfusion regions in the TKP models (mean dice coefficient = 0.81). Multivariate analysis revealed that the feeding lobar artery number was strongly correlated with tumor size and contact surface area; the supplying segmental arteries number correlated with tumor size.ConclusionsUsing the CNN technique, the TKP model is developed to automatically present the renal artery trees and precisely delineate the perfusion regions of different segmental arteries. The guidance of the TKP model is feasible and effective in nephron-sparing surgery.

BackgroundCopper-induced cell death has been widely investigated in human diseases as a form of programmed cell death (PCD). The newly recognized mechanism underlying copper-induced cell death provided us creative insights into the copper-related toxicity in cells, and this form of PCD was termed cuproptosis.MethodsThrough consensus clustering analysis, ccRCC patients from TCGA database were classified into different subgroups with distinct cuproptosis-based molecular patterns. Analyses of clinical significance, long-term survival, and immune features were performed on subgroups accordingly. The cuproptosis-based risk signature and nomogram were constructed and validated relying on the ccRCC cohort as well. The cuproptosis scoring system was generated to better characterize ccRCC patients. Finally, in vitro validation was conducted using ccRCC clinical samples and cell lines.ResultPatients from different subgroups displayed diverse clinicopathological features, survival outcomes, tumor microenvironment (TME) characteristics, immune-related score, and therapeutic responses. The prognostic model and cuproptosis score were well validated and proved to efficiently distinguish the high risk/score and low risk/score patients, which revealed the great predictive value. The cuproptosis score also tended out to be intimately associated with the prognosis and immune features of ccRCC patients. Additionally, the hub cuproptosis-associated gene (CAG) FDX1 presented a dysregulated expression pattern in human ccRCC samples, and it was confirmed to effectively promote the killing effects of copper ionophore elesclomol as a direct target. In vitro functional assays revealed the prominent anti-cancer role of FDX1 in ccRCC.ConclusionCuproptosis played an indispensable role in the regulation of TME features, tumor progression, and long-term prognosis of ccRCC.

AimsThis research aimed to explore alterations in the local gyrification index (GI) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).MethodsIn this study, 126 T2DM patients with MCI (T2DM-MCI), 154 T2DM patients with normal cognition (T2DM-NC), and 167 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. All subjects underwent a battery of neuropsychological tests. A multimodal approach combining surface-based morphometry (SBM) and seed-based RSFC was used to determine the structural and functional alterations in patients with T2DM-MCI. The relationships among the GI, RSFC, cognitive ability, and clinical variables were characterized.ResultsCompared with the T2DM-NC group and HC group, T2DM-MCI patients showed significantly reduced GI in the bilateral insular cortex. Decreased RSFC was found between the left insula and right precuneus, and the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG). The altered GI was correlated with T2DM duration, global cognition, and episodic memory. The mediation effects of RSFC on the association between GI and cognition were not statistically significant.ConclusionOur results suggest that GI may serve as a novel neuroimaging biomarker to predict T2DM-related MCI and help us to improve the understanding of the neuropathological effects of T2DM-related MCI.

Abstract Background Ubiquitylation modification is one of the multiple post-transcriptional process to regulate cellular physiology, including cell signaling, cycle regulation, DNA repair and transcriptional regulation. Members of TRIM family proteins could be defined as E3 ubiquitin ligases as they contain a RING-finger domain, and alterations of TRIM proteins are involved into a broad range of diverse disorders including cancer. TRIM37 is a novel discovered E3 ubiquitin ligase and acts as a oncoprotein in multiple human neoplasms, however its biological role in RCC still remains elusive. Methods RCC microarray chips and public datasets were screened to identify novel TRIMs member as TRIM37, which was dysregulated in RCC. Gain or loss of functional cancer cell models were constructed, and in vitro and in vivo assays were performed to elucidate its tumorigenic phenotypes. Interactive network analyses were utilized to define intrinsic mechanism. Results We identified TRIM37 was upregulated in RCC tumors, and its aberrant function predicted aggressive neoplastic phenotypes, poorer survival endings. TRIM37 promoted RCC cells EMT and malignant progression via TGF-β1 signaling activation, as a consequence of directly mediated by ubiquitinating-H2A modifications. Conclusions Our findings identified a previously unappreciated role of TRIM37 in RCC progression and prognostic prediction. Importantly, we declared a novel ubiquitination-dependent link between TRIM ubiquitin ligases and TGF-β1 signaling in regulating cancerous malignancies.

This study aimed to propose an equal-integral-bandwidth feature extraction method based on fast Fourier transform (FFT) to solve the problem of cumbersome processing and a large amount of calculation in the common feature extraction algorithm for vibration signals of on-load tap changer (OLTC). First, the vibration signals of OLTC were preprocessed in segments, which highlighted the status features and avoided the shortcomings of the FFT spectrum that lacked time axis information. Second, the vibration signal segments were analyzed with FFT, and the generated signal spectrum was divided into several segments according to equal integral. The bandwidth coefficient obtained in each segment was the characteristic value. Third, this study proposed that adding appropriate time domain features and further improving the algorithm could improve the accuracy of fault diagnosis. Finally, the main mechanical faults of OLTC were simulated, and the vibration signals were collected to carry out the fault diagnosis experiment of OLTC. The results showed that the FFT-based equal-integral-bandwidth feature extraction method was simple in processing, small in calculation, easy to implement in an embedded system, and had a high accuracy of fault diagnosis.

ObjectiveThe cognitive performance of individuals with white matter hyperintensities (WMH) tends to vary considerably. This study aimed to explore the relationship of the synchronous spontaneous activities in homotopic areas across hemispheres, named as voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC), with the cognitive performance of individuals with WMH.Materials and MethodsEighty-two WMH subjects without cognitive impairment (CI), 56 WMH subjects with CI, and 92 healthy subjects (HS) underwent neuropsychological tests and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging scans. VMHC maps were analyzed among the three groups. Correlative analyses were performed between VMHC values and cognitive function.ResultsNo significant difference in WMH volume, brain volume, or gray matter atrophy rate was shown between WMH subjects with and without CI. In contrast, those with CI displayed lower VMHC in the bilateral cuneus and calcarine and higher VMHC in the lentiform nucleus and caudate nucleus (LNCN) than those without CI. Furthermore, the VMHC in the LNCN was negatively associated with the global function and the memory function in WMH subjects.ConclusionThe enhanced VMHC in the LNCN was associated with the development of CI in individuals with WMH. This finding may contribute to the exploration of surrogate markers for the CI caused by WMH.

We designed and fabricated narrow-band UV-B AlGaN p-i-n photodiodes (PDs) with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 8 nm by optimizing the Al composition and thickness of the AlGaN layers. To improve the photoelectric response of the narrow-band PDs, a polarization electric field with the same direction with the applied bias field was introduced to the absorption layer by adjusting the Al composition ratio between the p-type AlGaN layer and i-type AlGaN absorption layer. The polarization enhanced narrow-band PD exhibited a higher external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 82% than the conventional one with an EQE of 67%. Meanwhile, a low dark current density of 1.7 nA/cm2 and four orders of magnitude UV-visible rejection ratio were achieved for the enhanced narrow-band PDs with a maximum photocurrent responsivity of 202 mA/W at 304 nm.

Abstract Background Published studies present conflicting data regarding the impact of Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) expression on prognosis of various cancers. We performed this meta-analysis to illustrate the preliminary predictive value of TSP-1. Methods Twenty-four studies with a total of 2379 patients were included. A comprehensive literature search was performed by using PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, and hand searches were also conducted of relevant bibliographies. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for patient survival and disease recurrence were initially identified to explore relationships between TSP-1 expression and patient prognosis. Results A total of 24 eligible studies were included in this meta-analysis. Abstract Background Renal cancer is one of the 10 most common cancers in human beings. The laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) is an effective way to treat renal cancer. Localization and delineation of the renal tumor from pre-operative CT Angiography (CTA) is an important step for LPN surgery planning. Recently, with the development of the technique of deep learning, deep neural networks can be trained to provide accurate pixel-wise renal tumor segmentation in CTA images. However, constructing the training dataset with a large amount of pixel-wise annotations is a time-consuming task for the radiologists. Therefore, weakly-supervised approaches attract more interest in research. Methods In this paper, we proposed a novel weakly-supervised convolutional neural network (CNN) for renal tumor segmentation. A three-stage framework was introduced to train the CNN with the weak annotations of renal tumors, i.e. the bounding boxes of renal tumors. The framework includes pseudo masks generation, group and weighted training phases. Clinical abdominal CT angiographic images of 200 patients were applied to perform the evaluation. Results Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a higher dice coefficient (DSC) of 0.826 than the other two existing weakly-supervised deep neural networks. Furthermore, the segmentation performance is close to the fully supervised deep CNN. Conclusions The proposed strategy improves not only the efficiency of network training but also the precision of the segmentation.

BackgroundThe role of brain atrophy in cognitive decline related to cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) remains unclear. This study used AccuBrain™ to identify major CSVD-related brain changes and verified the relationship between brain atrophy and different cognition domains in CSVD patients.MethodsAll enrolled 242 CSVD patients and 76 healthy participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging examinations and detailed neuropsychological scale assessments were collected at the same time. The AccuBrain™ technology was applied to fully automated image segmentation, measurement, and calculation of the acquired imaging results to obtain the volumes of different brain partitions and the volume of WMH for quantitative analysis. Correlation analyses were used to estimate the relationship between MRI features and different cognitive domains. Multifactor linear regression models were performed to analyze independent predictors of MTA and cognitive decline.ResultsCSVD patients exhibited multiple gray matter nucleus volume decreases in the basal ganglia regions and brain lobes, including the temporal lobe (P = 0.019), especially in the medial temporal lobe (p < 0.001), parietal lobe (p = 0.013), and cingulate lobe (p = 0.036) compare to HC. The volume of PWMH was an independent predictor of MTA for CSVD patients. Both medial temporal atrophy (MTA) and PWMH were associated with cognition impairment in CSVD-CI patients. MTA mediated the effect of PWMH on executive function in CSVD-CI patients.ConclusionsOur results showed that MTA was related to cognition impairment in CSVD patients, which might become a potential imaging marker for CSVD-CI.

AimsThis study aimed to investigate the relationships of impaired cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) and abnormal functional connectivity (FC) with white matter hyperintensity (WMH)-related cognitive decline.MethodsA total of 233 WMH subjects were recruited and categorized into WMH-I (n = 106), WMH-II (n = 72), and WMH-III (n = 55) groups according to Fazekas visual rating scale. All participants underwent neuropsychological tests and multimodal MRI scans, including 3D-T1, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The alterations of CVR maps and FC were further explored.ResultsSubjects with a higher WMH burden displayed a lower CVR in the left medial occipital gyrus (MOG). The FC analysis using MOG as a seed revealed that the FC of the left insula, left inferior parietal lobule, and thalamus changed abnormally as WMH aggravated. After adjusting for age, gender, and education years, the serial mediation analysis revealed that periventricular white matter hyperintensity contributes indirectly to poorer Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores (indirect effect: β = −0.1248, 95% CI: −0.4689, −0188), poorer Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) (indirect effect: β = −0.1436, 95% CI: −0.4584, −0.0292) scores, and longer trail making tests A (TMT-A) (indirect effect: β = 0.1837, 95% CI: 0.0069, 0.8273) times, specifically due to the lower CVR of the left MOG and the higher FC of the left insula-MOG.ConclusionThe CVR decline of the left MOG and the abnormal FC of the left insula-MOG attributed to WMH progression were responsible for the poor general cognition (MMSE and MoCA) and information processing speed (TMT-A). The left MOG may act as a connection, which is involved in the processing of cognitive biases by connecting with the left insula-cortical regions in WMH individuals.

PurposeCombined the number, volume, and location of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), this study aimed to explore the different features of CMBs and their correlation with cognitive ability in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).MethodsThis study recruited 95 patients with T2DM and 80 healthy control (HC) individuals. AccuBrain®, an automated tool, was used to obtain the number and volume of CMBs. The scores on global cognition and five cognitive domains were derived from a battery of cognitive tests. The logistic regression and multivariate linear regression were conducted to determine the relationship between the CMBs (number, volume, and location) and cognitive ability in patients with T2DM.ResultsAfter adjusting for several variables, the total volume of CMBs (OR = 0.332, 95%CI: 0.133–0.825, and p = 0.018) was independent risk factor for cognitive impairment, whereas the total number of CMBs was not (OR = 0933, 95%CI: 0.794–1.097, and p = 0.400). Furthermore, the volume of CMBs in lobar regions was independently associated with working memory (β = −0.239, 95%CI: −0.565 to −0.035, and p = 0.027). However, no significant correlation between the number of CMBs (both lobar and deep/infratentorium) and any cognitive domains was observed.ConclusionsLobar CMBs was related with cognitive impairment in patients with T2DM and might be a potential early warning signal. Compared with the counting analysis, the quantitative method offered a more sensitive and objective measurement for studying imaging features of CMBs.

Retinal imaging being a potential biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease is gradually attracting the attention of researchers. However, the association between retinal parameters and AD neuroimaging biomarkers, particularly structural changes, is still unclear. In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 25 cognitively impaired (CI) and 21 cognitively normal (CN) individuals. All subjects underwent retinal layer thickness and microvascular measurements with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Gray matter and white matter (WM) data such as T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging, respectively, were also collected. In addition, hippocampal subfield volumes and WM tract microstructural alterations were investigated as classical AD neuroimaging biomarkers. The microvascular and retinal features and their correlation with brain structural imaging markers were further analyzed. We observed a reduction in vessel density (VD) at the inferior outer (IO) sector (p = 0.049), atrophy in hippocampal subfield volumes, such as the subiculum (p = 0.012), presubiculum (p = 0.015), molecular_layer_HP (p = 0.033), GC-ML-DG (p = 0.043) and whole hippocampus (p = 0.033) in CI patients. Altered microstructural integrity of WM tracts in CI patients was also discovered in the cingulum hippocampal part (CgH). Importantly, we detected significant associations between retinal VD and gray matter volumes of the hippocampal subfield in CI patients. These findings suggested that the retinal microvascular measures acquired by OCTA may be markers for the early prediction of AD-related structural brain changes.

Objective and Impact Statement. There is a need to develop high-performance and low-cost data augmentation strategies for intelligent skin cancer screening devices that can be deployed in rural or underdeveloped communities. The proposed strategy can not only improve the classification performance of skin lesions but also highlight the potential regions of interest for clinicians’ attention. This strategy can also be implemented in a broad range of clinical disciplines for early screening and automatic diagnosis of many other diseases in low resource settings. Methods. We propose a high-performance data augmentation strategy of search space 101, which can be combined with any model through a plug-and-play mode and search for the best argumentation method for a medical database with low resource cost. Results. With EfficientNets as a baseline, the best BACC of HAM10000 is 0.853, outperforming the other published models of “single-model and no-external-database” for ISIC 2018 Lesion Diagnosis Challenge (Task 3). The best average AUC performance on ISIC 2017 achieves 0.909 (±0.015), exceeding most of the ensembling models and those using external datasets. Performance on Derm7pt archives the best BACC of 0.735 (±0.018) ahead of all other related studies. Moreover, the model-based heatmaps generated by Grad-CAM++ verify the accurate selection of lesion features in model judgment, further proving the scientific rationality of model-based diagnosis. Conclusion. The proposed data augmentation strategy greatly reduces the computational cost for clinically intelligent diagnosis of skin lesions. It may also facilitate further research in low-cost, portable, and AI-based mobile devices for skin cancer screening and therapeutic guidance.

Logistics migration and movement require precise information updates for traceability and visibility of goods through E-commerce platforms. Computer vision and digital image processing techniques are used for visual identification and tracking through different warehouses and delivery points. In this article, an incessant visualized tracking scheme (IVTS) is designed for identifying and tracking E-commerce logistics throughout the migration points. This scheme endorsed computer vision technology for logistics recognition and labelled data detection. In this scheme, the labelled logistics data is verified for its similarity in different migrating locations and to the endpoint. Based on the dimensional features and regional-pixel similarity factor, it is verified using the deep neural network. This learning process identifies dimensional variations due to logistics displacement and position suppressing the similarity variations. It is performed based on the migration and information available to prevent tracking errors. For the varying locations and logistics displacement, the error pixel regions are identified and trained for possible similarity detection. The proposed scheme effectively improves visual accuracy, tracking maximization, and logistics detection by reducing dimensional errors.

Cortical visual system dysfunction is closely related to the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), while retinal vascular structures play an important role in the integrity of the function of the visual network and are a potential biomarker of AD. This study explored the association between the cortical visual system and retinal vascular structures in AD-spectrum patients, and it established a screening tool to detect preclinical AD based on these parameters identified in a retinal examination. A total of 42 subjects were enrolled and were distributed into two groups: 22 patients with cognitive impairment and 20 healthy controls. All participants underwent neuropsychological tests, optical coherence tomography angiography and resting-state fMRI imaging. Seed-based functional connectivity analysis was used to construct the cortical visual network. The association of functional connectivity of the cortical visual system and retinal vascular structures was further explored in these subjects. This study found that the cognitive impairment group displayed prominently decreased functional connectivity of the cortical visual system mainly involving the right inferior temporal gyrus, left supramarginal gyrus and right postcentral gyrus. Meanwhile, we observed that retinal vascular structure characteristics deteriorated with the decline in functional connectivity in the cortical visual system. Our study provided novel insights into the aberrant cortical visual system in patients with cognitive impairment that strongly emphasized the critical role of retinal vascular structure characteristics, which could be used as potential biomarkers for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of AD.

BackgroundAntiangiogenic agents that specifically target vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), such as sunitinib, have been utilized as the standard therapy for metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients. However, most patients eventually show no responses to the targeted drugs, and the mechanisms for the resistance remain unclear. This study is aimed to identify pivotal molecules and to uncover their potential functions involved in this adverse event in ccRCC treatment.MethodsTwo datasets, GSE64052 and GSE76068, were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using the limma package in R software. The gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was conducted using clusterProfiler package. A protein–protein interaction (PPI) network was built using the STRING database and Cytoscape software. Kaplan—Meier survival curves were plotted using R software. qRT-PCR and Western blotting were used to detect the MX2 and pathway expression in RCC cell lines. Sunitinib-resistant cell lines were constructed, and loss-of-function experiments were conducted by knocking down MX2. All statistical analyses were performed using R version 3.6.1 and SPSS 23.0.ResultsA total of 760 DEGs were derived from two datasets in GEO database, and five hub genes were identified, among which high-level MX2 exhibited a pronounced correlation with poor overall survival (OS) in sunitinib-resistant ccRCC patients. Clinical correlation analysis and Gene Set Variation Analysis (GSVA) on MX2 showed that the upregulation of MX2 was significantly related to the malignant phenotype of ccRCC, and it was involved in several pathways and biological processes associated with anticancer drug resistance. qRT-PCR and Western blotting revealed that MX2 was distinctly upregulated in sunitinib-resistant RCC cell lines. Colony formation assay and Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) assay showed that MX2 strongly promoted resistant capability to sunitinib of ccRCC cells.ConclusionMX2 is a potent indicator for sunitinib resistance and a therapeutic target in ccRCC patients.

Inflammatory reaction after ischemia-reperfusion contributes significantly to a worsened prognosis, and microglia activation is the main resource of inflammation in the nervous system. Targeting STAT5 has been shown to be a highly effective anti-inflammatory therapy; however, the mechanism by which the STAT5 signaling pathway regulates neuroinflammation following brain injury induced by ischemia-reperfusion remains unclear. Dauricine is an effective agent in anti-inflammation and neuroprotection, but the mechanism by which dauricine acts in ischemia-reperfusion remained unknown. This study is the first to find that the anti-inflammation mechanism of dauricine mainly occurs through the STAT5-NF-κB pathway and that it might act as a STAT5 inhibitor. Dauricine suppresses the inflammation caused by cytokines Eotaxin, KC, TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12β, and IL-17α, as well as inhibiting microglia activation. The STAT5b mutant at Tyr-699 reverses the protective effect of dauricine on the oxygen-glucose deprivation-reperfusion injury of neurons and reactivates the P-NF-κB expression in microglia. These results suggest that dauricine might be able to suppress the neuroinflammation and protect the neurons from the injury of post-ischemia-reperfusion injury via mediating the microglia activation through the STAT5-NF-κB pathway. As a potential therapeutic target for neuroinflammation, STAT5 needs to be given further attention regarding its role in ischemic stroke.

AlGaN nanorods have attracted increasing amounts of attention for use in ultraviolet (UV) optoelectronic devices. Here, self-assembled AlGaN nanorods with embedding quantum disks (Qdisks) were grown on Si(111) using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE). The morphology and quantum construction of the nanorods were investigated and well-oriented and nearly defect-free nanorods were shown to have a high density of about 2 × 1010 cm−2. By controlling the substrate temperature and Al/Ga ratio, the emission wavelengths of the nanorods could be adjusted from 276 nm to 330 nm. By optimizing the structures and growth parameters of the Qdisks, a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the AlGaN Qdisk nanorods of up to 77% was obtained at 305 nm, which also exhibited a shift in the small emission wavelength peak with respect to the increasing temperatures during the PL measurements.

BackgroundStructural network alterations in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are related to worse cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to quantify the alterations in gray matter associated with impaired cognition and their pathological biomarkers in AD-spectrum patients.MethodsWe extracted gray matter networks from 3D-T1 magnetic resonance imaging scans, and a graph theory analysis was used to explore alterations in the network metrics in 34 healthy controls, 70 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients, and 40 AD patients. Spearman correlation analysis was computed to investigate the relationships among network properties, neuropsychological performance, and cerebrospinal fluid pathological biomarkers (i.e., Aβ, t-tau, and p-tau) in these subjects.ResultsAD-spectrum individuals demonstrated higher nodal properties and edge properties associated with impaired memory function, and lower amyloid-β or higher tau levels than the controls. Furthermore, these compensations at the brain regional level in AD-spectrum patients were mainly in the medial temporal lobe; however, the compensation at the whole-brain network level gradually extended from the frontal lobe to become widely distributed throughout the cortex with the progression of AD.ConclusionThe findings provide insight into the alterations in the gray matter network related to impaired cognition and pathological biomarkers in the progression of AD. The possibility of compensation was detected in the structural networks in AD-spectrum patients; the compensatory patterns at regional and whole-brain levels were different and the clinical significance was highlighted.

Objective: To characterize earlier damage pattern of white matter (WM) microstructure in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and its relationship with cognitive domain dysfunction.Methods: A total of 144 CSVD patients and 100 healthy controls who underwent neuropsychological measurements and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) examination were recruited. Cognitive function, emotion, and gait were assessed in each participant. The automated fiber quantification (AFQ) technique was used to extract different fiber properties between groups, and partial correlation and general linear regression analyses were performed to assess the relationship between position-specific WM microstructure and cognitive function.Results: Specific segments in the association fibers, commissural WM regions of interest (ROIs), and projection fibers were damaged in the CSVD group [P < 0.05, family-wise error (FWE) correction], and these damaged segments showed interhemispheric symmetry. In addition, the damage to specific tract profiles [including the posteromedial component of the right cingulum cingulate (CC), the occipital lobe portion of the callosum forceps major, the posterior portion of the left superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), and the bilateral anterior thalamic radiation (ATR)] was related to the dysfunction in specific cognitive domains. Among these tracts, we found the ATR to be the key set of tracts whose profiles were most associated with cognitive dysfunction. The left ATR was a specific fiber bundle associated with episode memory and language function, whereas the fractional anisotropy (FA) values of the intermediate component of the right ATR were negatively correlated with executive function and gait evaluation. It should be noted that the abovementioned relationships could not survive the Bonferroni correction (p < 0.05/27), so we chose more liberal uncorrected statistical thresholds.Conclusions: Damage to the WM fiber bundles showed extensive interhemispheric symmetry and was limited to particular segments in CSVD patients. Disruption of strategically located fibers was associated with different cognitive deficits, especially the bilateral ATR.

The long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) H19 has been demonstrated to play a crucial role in carcinogenesis, including renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, the impact of genetic variations in H19 gene on RCC has not been investigated before. In the present study, we sought to evaluate whether genetic polymorphisms in H19 are related to the susceptibility and mortality of RCC. We genotyped four widely studied polymorphisms in H19 and assessed their relationship with susceptibility and prognosis of RCC in a case-control study compromising 1,027 cases and 1,094 controls. The functionality of the important polymorphism was further investigated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and luciferase reporter assay. We found that H19 rs2839698 was significantly associated with risk and prognosis of RCC. Compared with the H19 rs2839698 CC genotype, the variant genotypes (CT/TT) were significantly associated with increased risk of RCC (P = 0.023, OR = 1.21; 95% CI = 1.03–1.45). Besides, patients with variant genotypes (CT/TT) were more likely to develop large tumor (P = 0.003, OR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.16–1.85) and advanced disease (P = 0.010, OR = 1.59; 95% CI = 1.12–2.26); and had a significantly unfavorable overall survival than those with the rs2839698 CC genotype (CT/TT vs. CC: Log-rank P = 0.026, HR = 2.25, 95%CI = 1.07–4.75). Furthermore, the CT/TT genotypes were associated with significantly increased expression of H19 in renal tissue. The luciferase reporter assays revealed the potential effect of rs2839698 variant on the binding of microRNAs to H19. Our results suggest that the H19 rs2839698 variant may be a genetic predictor of susceptibility and mortality of RCC. The risk effects and the functional impact of the variant on H19 still need further validation.

Purpose: There is a high correlation between white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and cognitive impairment (CI) in elderly people. However, not all WMH will develop into CI, and the potential mechanism of WMH-related CI is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the topological properties of white matter structural network in WMH-related CI.Methods: Forty-one WMH subjects with CI (WMH-CI), 42 WMH subjects without CI (WMH-no-CI), and 52 elderly healthy controls (HC) were recruited. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) fiber tractography and graph theoretical analysis were applied to construct the structural network. We compared network properties and clinical features among the three groups. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationships among WMH volumes, impaired network properties, and cognitive functions in the WMH-CI group.Results: Compared with the controls, both WMH groups showed decreased network strength, global efficiency, and increased characteristic path length (Lp) at the level of the whole brain. The WMH-CI group displayed more profound impairments of nodal efficiency and nodal path length (NLp) within multiple regions including precentral, cingulate, and medial temporal gyrus. The disrupted network properties were associated with CI and WMH burdens in the WMH-CI group. Furthermore, a mediation effect of NLp in the left inferior frontal gyrus was observed for the association between periventricular WMH (PWMH) and memory deficit.Conclusions: Brain structural network in WMH-CI is significantly disturbed, and this disturbance is related to the severity of WMH and CI. Increased NLp in the left opercular part of inferior frontal gyrus (IFGoperc.L) was shown to be a mediation framework between PWMH and WMH-related memory, which shed light on investigating the underlying mechanisms of CI caused by WMH.

Abstract In this paper, we introduce hemiellipsoid- and inverted hemiellipsoid-modified semiconductor nanowire (NW) optical structures, and present a systematic investigation on light management of the corresponding arrays based on GaAs. It is found that the modification makes well utilization of light scattering and antireflection, thus leading to excellent light confinement with limited effective thickness. For example, 90% and 95% of the incident photons with the energy larger than the bandgap energy can be trapped by the inverted hemiellipsoid-modified NW arrays with the effective thicknesses of only ~ 180 and 270 nm, respectively. Moreover, excellent light confinement can be achieved in a broad range of the modification height. Compared to the corresponding array without top modification, spatial distribution of the photo-generated carriers is expanded, facilitating carrier collection especially for the planar pn junction configuration. Further investigation indicates that these composite nanostructures possess excellent omnidirectional light confinement, which is expected for advanced solar absorbers.

This paper presents a distributed traffic control strategy based on cell-transmission model (CTM). In view of the drawbacks of the CTM in describing the evolution of traffic flow on the intersections under the control signals, we modify the CTM and propose a simplified model. A series of rules is designed with the help of the subgradient descent method to update the status of intersections. Unlike the conventional method, the traffic signal timing plan is found in a fully distributed manner. The evolution of traffic flow for several kinds of typical traffic states is studied through numerical simulation, and the validity and benefits of our method are evaluated against the most popular mixed-integer linear programing.

Abstract Background To explore the feasibility and safety of retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with sequential segmental renal artery clamping for the patients with multiple renal tumor of who have solitary kidney or contralateral kidney insufficiency. Methods Nine patients who have undergone retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with sequential segmental renal artery clamping between October 2010 and January 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical materials and parameters during and after the operation were summarized. Results Nineteen tumors were resected in nine patients and the operations were all successful. The operation time ranged from 100 to 180 min (125 min); clamping time of segmental renal artery was 10 ~ 30 min (23 min); the amount of blood loss during the operation was 120 ~ 330 ml (190 ml); hospital stay after the operation is 3 ~ 6d (5d). There was no complication during the perioperative period, and the pathology diagnosis after the surgery showed that there were 13 renal clear cell carcinomas, two papillary carcinoma and four perivascular epithelioid cell tumors with negative margins from the 19 tumors. All patients were followed up for 3 ~ 60 months, and no local recurrence or metastasis was detected. At 3-month post-operation follow-up, the mean serum creatinine was 148.6 ± 28.1 μmol/L (p = 0.107), an increase of 3.0 μmol/L from preoperative baseline. Conclusions For the patients with multiple renal tumors and solitary kidney or contralateral kidney insufficiency, retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with sequential segmental renal artery clamping was feasible and safe, which minimized the warm ischemia injury to the kidney and preserved the renal function effectively.

Abstract Background Currently, the standard treatment for renal pelvis carcinoma is radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision. To describe the feasibility of retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with segmental renal artery clamping for cancer of renal pelvis, we report this special case for the first time. Case presentation A 67-year-old woman received this operation. Preoperative ureteroscopy revealed a papillary neoplasm with a pedicle in the upper calyx of the left kidney. After entering the retroperitoneal space and dissociating the renal artery and renal vein, the target artery was clamped beyond the final bifurcation before entering the parenchyma. After incision of the left renal parenchyma and exposure of the upper calyceal neck, the tumor was found confined to the upper calyx. Thereafter, the renal calyx and parenchyma were sutured successively after complete resection of the neoplasm. Postoperative pathological examination confirmed that the Grade I papillary carcinoma was confined to the mucosal layer. Thus far, there is no evidence of recurrence during the follow-up period for more than 42 months after surgery. Conclusions Retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with segmental renal artery clamping of the kidney provides a feasible treatment modality for noninvasive tumors that are limited to the calyx.

ObjectivesThis study was to assess the feasibility of a modified multiphasic CT scan protocol combined with homemade software measurements of glomerular filtration rate (CT-GFR) and explore the effect of renal tumor volume on the calculation of CT-GFR.Materials and MethodsProspective observational study comparing three methods of GFR measurement from February 2017 to December 2017, 91 patients with unilateral renal tumor underwent both a modified multiphasic CT scans of kidney and serum creatinine (Scr) tests preoperatively, of which 15 cases underwent additional radionuclide examination. Total and split CT-GFR, with or without renal tumor, were quantified by the homemade software in early and late renal parenchymal phases, respectively. The volume of renal tumor was quantified by the homemade software. Correlation and difference between CT-GFR and traditional methods of GFR measurement, including estimated GFR (eGFR) from Scr concentration and split GFR using of radionuclide examination (R-GFR), were performed.ResultsThere is a strong correlation between CT-GFR with renal tumor and eGFR (r = 0.90, p < 0.001) in early renal parenchymal phase. The relative CT-GFR in early renal parenchymal phase was highly correlated with the relative R-GFR (r = 0.88, p < 0.001). Renal tumor volume significantly correlated with the value of CT-GFR that determined by subtracting the CT-GFR measurement without renal tumor from CT-GFR measurement with renal tumor (r = 0.89, p < 0.001).ConclusionA modified multiphasic CT scan protocol combined with homemade software might be an alternative technique for the evaluation of renal function for the patients with unilateral renal tumor.

This paper presents the new analysis of the applications of massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) in full-duplex (FD) cellular two-way relay networks, and sheds valuable insights on the interactions between massive MIMO, and relay and duplex modes. Practical scenarios are considered, where massive MIMO is deployed at the base station and the relay station. Based on generic relay modes, namely, antenna-selection-based decode-and-forward (DF) relay and signal-space alignment based amplify-and-forward (AF) relay, closed-form expressions for the asymptotic signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) are derived. The difference between AF and DF in the FD mode is quantified, and so is that between FD and half-duplex (HD) under the two relay modes. With massive MIMO, the superiority of DF in the FD mode is confirmed in terms of spectral efficiency. The sufficient conditions for the FD mode to outperform the HD mode are identified. The effectiveness of massive MIMO in terms of self-loop interference cancellation and inter-user interference suppression is proved. All these insightful findings are corroborated by simulations.

In wireless multicast networks，it is rarely concerned that there may be certain receiving nodes which have better quality links both to the source node and to the other receiving nodes. A novel hash-neighborhoodsearch-network-coding based opportunistic relay retransmission approach was proposed. According to the packet reception status and channel quality，this novel approach dynamically selected the best suitable receiving node whose channel quality was better than the source node as a relay，then hash-neighborhood-search-network-coding strategy was used for the relay to retransmit other receiving nodes’ lost packets. Simulation results show that this novel approach can effectively reduce the number of retransmissions to improve the transmission efficiency with respect to the existing algorithms，especially when one or more of the receiving nodes are interfered and the quality of the channel between receiving nodes and source node continues to decline，this approach can achieve a high retransmission gain.

A novel opportunistic-network-coding-based retransmission approach was proposed.According to the feedback on packet loss from the receiving nodes,this novel approach can not only efficiently select a combination of lost packets through Hash lookup for packet retransmission,but also can ensure priority retransmission making up to a single combination retransmission packet which can maximize the number of receiving nodes for recovering their lost packets.Furthermore,the proposed approach fully exploits the coding opportunity based on neighborhood association,and allows the receiving nodes to recover their lost packets from multiple retransmission packets.The simulation results show that this novel approach can effectively reduce the number of retransmissions to improve the transmission efficiency with respect to the existing algorithms.

Existing resource allocation algorithms can't balance system capacity and fairness well when the channel state information is imperfect. In order to solve this problem, a fair resource allocation algorithm was proposed to maximize the system ergodic capacity, while the fairness could be adjusted flexibly by introducing the fairness relaxation factor. In order to reduce the complexity in the use of dual optimization method for solving the lagrange operator process, an iteration searching method in the same layer was proposed to replace the traditional multi-layer iteration searching method. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively maximize the system ergodic capacity and guarantee the fairness, while the computational complexity was reduced significantly.

Prostate cancer is the most common male malignancies in the United States. The specific characteristics of different disease stages have been deeply investigated. We present our data on ALDH1A3 as a potential therapeutic target for the prostate cancer based on several functional investigations. Also, we used The Cancer Genome Atlas datasets for primary prostate cancer to detect the relevance of ALDH1A3 and prostate cancer luminal phenotype. We found that ALDH1A3 correlated with androgen receptor signaling pathway in primary prostate cancer, which is consistent with its luminal layer localization. Then, from the genetic manipulation assay, we knocked out the ALDH1A3 in PC-3 cells and found significantly reduced proliferation rate as well as the invasion ability. Furthermore, we looked up our single center primary prostate cancer post-operative follow-up data and suggested that the high level ALDH1A3 expression could predict the poor progression-free survival in a 158-patient cohort. We concluded that ALDH1A3, localized in luminal layer in prostate epithelium, is highly expressed in prostate cancer. It played important role in maintaining the proliferation, invasion, and cell cycle. It can also become the potential biomarker in the future to guide the therapeutic manipulations for primary prostate cancer.

Existing algorithms couldn't balance system capacity and high fairness well,so a multi-user rate adaptive allocation algorithm was proposed to maximize the capacity of OFDMA system under proportional fairness.Improved maximize the minimum（max-min）user rate model was proposed,the current user was allocated the highest efficiency subcarrier according to the channel efficiency control parameter.If some allocated subcarrier's channel gain was lower than the threshold value,which would be reallocated to another user whose channel gain was highest.Power allocation model was converted into expression of water-filling line; every user's power allocation was resolved according to the resolved water-filling line.Simulation results and analysis show that the proposed scheme can achieve higher capacity and perfect fairness in a variety of SNR cases,while requiring slightly less computation.
