Il contributo, dopo aver presentato le caratteristiche principali dei Big Data ne discute le implicazioni epistemologiche e metodologiche nella ricerca sociale. Se l’attuale interesse per i Big Data ha generato l’impressione diffusa che tali informazioni siano in grado di produrre conoscenza senza la necessità di ricorrere ai metodi scientifici convenzionali, rimane aperta la discussione se la possibilità di lavorare con una ingente mole di dati abbia realmente portato a una nuova transizione epistemologica. Un ulteriore aspetto di riflessione critica, presente nel saggio, riguarda la qualità e l’affidabilità delle informazioni, le questioni legate alla privacy e alla proprietà dei dati.

Il contributo propone una riflessione sul "tempo mensa" come momento educativo.

Le esperienze illustrate dai saggi di questa sezione della Rivista propongono, tra gli altri, almeno tre piani di riflessione, intimamente connessi tra loro, ma che possono, tuttavia, distinguersi analiticamente al fine di una più chiara contestualizzazione della misura di cui espongono i problemi e lo stato di attuazione in sei città. Su questi tre piani, almeno, sarà importante valorizzare anche la valutazione complessiva della Carta Acquisti Sperimentale (CAS), quando questa sarà completata , in relazione alle opzioni da assumere nella progettazione della misura nazionale di contrasto alla povertà proposta nel disegno di legge delega del governo del 28 gennaio 2016, The article proposes a multilevel discussion of the new social card and offers a reflection on the path towards a national measure against poverty. Three dimensions should be taken into account, all of them closely intertwined, yet to be analytically distinguished in order to contextualize this new measure against poverty and its limits. The first dimension concerns the connection of the new social card with plans to contrast poverty developed by the European Union. Secondly, there is the need to reflect on the deep, variegated and yet unexplored effects of the long economic crisis on our social system and its institutional structures. The third dimension to think about is represented by the issue of governance, to understand which model could offer an effective management and implementation of the measure on the national and local levels.

The Century Pb-Zn-Ag mine, Queensland, Australia, is a large open-cut mine approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. The mine experienced three failures in 2009, which began as small failures and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes were carried out to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area located south of the wall. As mining progressed shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. The area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management. The development and construction of a thermometry system based on optical fiber sensors is presented. This system is used in a laboratory of experimental hyperthermia to characterize the distribution of temperature on a substitute material of biological tissue (phantom), when it is subjected to controlled electromagnetic or ultrasonic radiation. The experiments are carried out inside an anechoic chamber. The temperature sensors were developed based on plastic optical fibers that work under the principle of evanescent sensors. Its presence in the phantom doesn't disturb the electromagnetic fields. The sensors are positioned inside the phantom by means of a system of automated positioning, controlled in precise form through a personal computer (PC) located inside the chamber. An external PC carries out the automation of the experiments using a control software that also allows to visualize the temperature mapping inside the phantom. The measurement of the temperature is carried out with a precision of plus or minus 0.2 degrees C in the interval of 35 degrees C at 45 degrees C. The sensors positioning system has a resolution of 2.5 mm and a load capacity of 3 kg. The control and visualization software presents a friendly interface for the user.
