Introduction Vection is a stationary individual's illusory experience of self-motion. This illusory self-motion is operationally important for aviation, particularly military aviation, since vection is a dramatic example of spatial disorientation (SD), which is an individual's failure to correctly sense the aircraft's position, motion, and/or attitude with respect to the fixed coordinate system of the Earth's surface and its gravitational vertical. Notably, SD is a major cause of fatal aviation mishaps, and the visual system is particularly prone to provoking vection. This article describes the Virtual Reality Vection System (VRVS), which uses computer-controlled virtual reality technology to induce vection under controlled conditions for training, demonstration, testing, and research. Materials and Methods The VRVS enables the precise specification of the number and appearance of visual stimulus elements intended to generate vection, including photorealistic images. The VRVS can present visual stimuli on any OpenXR-capable virtual reality headset. The VRVS currently records 2 types of behavioral responses, button presses to indicate the presence and duration of vection and the voltage of a handheld linear potentiometer to indicate the presence, duration, and magnitude of vection. Results An approved test plan helped guide, organize, document, and validate the VRVS during its development. Under this plan, a pair of tests guided hardware and software development of the VRVS system. Although the first test verified the ability of the VRVS to generate and measure vection, it also demonstrated that the VRVS can quickly manipulate the visual stimuli from one trial to the next so that the VRVS can support complex experimental designs. The second test used these capabilities to verify that the VRVS can characterize vection in a more analytic fashion using a masking paradigm. Specifically, the test assessed whether random stimulus elements injected into the vection-inducing stimulus disrupted vection in a quantifiable fashion. This work opens the door to studies that characterize the necessary and sufficient visual elements for vection-based SD. Discussion The VRVS is currently used to research, develop, test, and evaluate mitigation strategies targeting vection-related SD in degraded visual environments. Similarly, the VRVS is supporting research to develop methods to predict individual differences in visually induced motion sickness susceptibilities. The VRVS is currently being integrated with a precision motor-controlled rotating Barany chair for multisensory studies. It should be noted that since the VRVS was developed to support United States Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory projects, it is an Army product representing government intellectual property and may be freely available to other government institutions. Objective: Demonstrate the ability of 0.5 mm thickness lithium disilicate laminates associated with resin cement to mask different substrate saturations. Methods: 60 specimens (n = 5) were prepared with CAD/CAM lithium disilicate glass–ceramic IPS e.max CAD, 0.5 mm thick, in three degrees of translucency (HT, MT and LT); cemented by Variolink Esthetic LC Light+ (L) and Neutral (N) on composite resin substrates A1 and A4 shades. Color measurements were performed by a spectrophotometer (CM‐3700d ‐Konica Minolta). The L*, a*, b* parameters of the tri‐layer structure (laminate/ resin cement/ substrate) were used to calculate color difference (∆E00) by CIEDE2000 formula and Translucency Parameter (TP00). This study adopted ∆E00 = 0.8, as perceptibility threshold (PT), and ∆E00 = 1.8, as acceptability threshold (AT). Statistical analyses were performed by one‐way ANOVA and Tukey tests (a = 0.05). Results: Color difference between resin cement shades showed statistical differences (p < 0.0001) and ∆E00 > 1.8 for all groups. Color difference between substrates saturations showed a significant statistical difference (p < 0.0001) and ∆E00 values above AT for all groups. The TP00 demonstrated significant statistical differences (p < 0.0001). The LTL combination, the opaquest set, showed the smallest ∆E00 values between substrate shades differences, however, above AT. Conclusion: The translucency of the lithium disilicate, the substrate saturation and the resin cement opacity influenced final color of restoration. The ceramic translucency impact on final color was reduced by opaque resin cement. Furthermore, the LT lithium disilicate and the Light+ resin cement reduced the translucency of the restoration, contributing to mask saturated substrate. Clinical Relevance: This study shows the influence of conservative lithium disilicate laminates with different degrees of translucency associated with resin cement on final color of saturated substrate restorations. A minimally invasive esthetic protocol for masking substrates is demonstrated by associating low translucency ceramic laminates and opaque resin cement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Auditory stream segregation and informational masking were investigated in brain-lesioned individuals, age-matched controls with no neurological disease, and young college-age students. A psychophysical paradigm known as rhythmic masking release (RMR) was used to examine the ability of participants to identify a change in the rhythmic sequence of 20-ms Gaussian noise bursts presented through headphones and filtered through generalized head-related transfer functions to produce the percept of an externalized auditory image (i.e., a 3D virtual reality sound). The target rhythm was temporally interleaved with a masker sequence comprising similar noise bursts in a manner that resulted in a uniform sequence with no information remaining about the target rhythm when the target and masker were presented from the same location (an impossible task). Spatially separating the target and masker sequences allowed participants to determine if there was a change in the target rhythm midway during its presentation. RMR thresholds were defined as the minimum spatial separation between target and masker sequences that resulted in 70.7% correct-performance level in a single-interval 2-alternative forced-choice adaptive tracking procedure. The main findings were (1) significantly higher RMR thresholds for individuals with brain lesions (especially those with damage to parietal areas) and (2) a left-right spatial asymmetry in performance for lesion (but not control) participants. These findings contribute to a better understanding of spatiotemporal relations in informational masking and the neural bases of auditory scene analysis.

Anthropogenic noise is an increasing threat to marine mammals that rely on sound for communication, navigation, detecting prey and predators, and finding mates. Auditory masking is one consequence of anthropogenic noise, the study of which is approached from multiple disciplines including field investigations of animal behavior, noise characterization from in-situ recordings, computational modeling of communication space, and hearing experiments conducted in the laboratory. This paper focuses on laboratory hearing experiments applying psychophysical methods, with an emphasis on the mechanisms that govern auditory masking. Topics include tone detection in simple, complex, and natural noise; mechanisms for comodulation masking release and other forms of release from masking; the role of temporal resolution in auditory masking; and energetic vs informational masking.

We describe a scalp-recorded measure of tonotopic selectivity, the "cortical onset response" (COR) and compare the results between humans and cats. The COR results, in turn, were compared with psychophysical masked-detection thresholds obtained using similar stimuli and obtained from both species. The COR consisted of averaged responses elicited by 50-ms tone-burst probes presented at 1-s intervals against a continuous noise masker. The noise masker had a bandwidth of 1 or 1/8th octave, geometrically centred on 4000 Hz for humans and on 8000 Hz for cats. The probe frequency was either - 0.5, - 0.25, 0, 0.25 or 0.5 octaves re the masker centre frequency. The COR was larger for probe frequencies more distant from the centre frequency of the masker, and this effect was greater for the 1/8th-octave than for the 1-octave masker. This pattern broadly reflected the masked excitation patterns obtained psychophysically with similar stimuli in both species. However, the positive signal-to-noise ratio used to obtain reliable COR measures meant that some aspects of the data differed from those obtained psychophysically, in a way that could be partly explained by the upward spread of the probe's excitation pattern. Our psychophysical measurements also showed that the auditory filter width obtained at 8000 Hz using notched-noise maskers was slightly wider in cat than previous measures from humans. We argue that although conclusions from COR measures differ in some ways from conclusions based on psychophysics, the COR measures provide an objective, noninvasive, valid measure of tonotopic selectivity that does not require training and that may be applied to acoustic and cochlear-implant experiments in humans and laboratory animals.

Macular degeneration (MD), a retinal disease affecting central vision, represents the leading cause of visual impairment in the Western world, and MD patients face severe limitations in daily activities like reading and face recognition. A common compensation strategy adopted by these patients involves the use of a region in the spared peripheral retina as a new fixation spot and oculomotor reference (preferred retinal locus, or PRL). Still, peripheral vision is characterized by poorer visual acuity, fixation stability, and larger crowding zones that further hinder processes like object recognition, visual search, and reading. Perceptual learning (PL) has been successfully used to improve visual acuity in mild visual conditions (e.g., presbyopia, amblyopia and myopia), but results in MD are less clear, often showing limited generalization of learning, unlike what is observed in a healthy population. A possible reason is the suboptimal fixation in the PRL that might prevent patients from processing the briefly presented training stimuli. Following this hypothesis, we trained five MD patients and four age- and eccentricity-matched controls with a protocol that combined contrast detection and a task previously used to train fixation stability. Results showed transfer of learning to crowding reduction, reading speed, and visual acuity in both MD patients and controls. These results suggest that in the case of central vision loss, PL training might benefit from the integration of oculomotor components to optimize the effect of training and promote transfer of learning to other visual functions.

The interaction between the primary visual cortex (V1) and extrastriate visual areas provides the first building blocks in our perception of the world. V2, in particular, seems to play a crucial role in shaping contextual modulation information through feedback projections to V1. However, whether this feedback is inhibitory or excitatory is still unclear. In order to test the nature of V2 feedback to V1, we used neuronavigation-guided offline inhibitory transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on V2 before testing participants on collinear facilitation, a contrast detection task with lateral masking. This contextual modulation task is thought to rely on horizontal connections in V1 and possibly extrastriate feedback. Results showed that when inhibitory TMS was delivered over V2, contrast thresholds decreased for targets presented in the contralateral hemifield, consistent with the retinotopic mapping of this area, while having no effect for targets presented in the ipsilateral hemifield or after control (CZ) stimulation. These results suggest that feedback from V2 to V1 during contextual modulation is mostly inhibitory, corroborating recent observations in monkey electrophysiology and extending this mechanism to human visual system. Moreover, we provide for the first time direct evidence of the involvement of extrastriate visual areas in collinear facilitation.

The normalization model provides an elegant account of contextual modulation in individual neurons of primary visual cortex. Understanding the implications of normalization at the population level is hindered by the heterogeneity of cortical neurons, which differ in the composition of their normalization pools and semi-saturation constants. Here we introduce a geometric approach to investigate contextual modulation in neural populations and study how the representation of stimulus orientation is transformed by the presence of a mask. We find that population responses can be embedded in a low-dimensional space and that an affine transform can account for the effects of masking. The geometric analysis further reveals a link between changes in discriminability and bias induced by the mask. We propose the geometric approach can yield new insights into the image processing computations taking place in early visual cortex at the population level while coping with the heterogeneity of single cell behavior.

In a selective centroid task, the participant views a brief cloud of items of different types-some of which are targets, the others distractors-and strives to mouse-click the centroid of the target items, ignoring the distractors. Advantages of the centroid task are that multiple target types can appear in the same display and that influence functions, which estimate the weight of each stimulus type in the cloud on the perceived centroid for each participant, can be obtained easily and efficiently. Here we document the strong, negative impact on performance that results when the participant is instructed to attend to target dots that consist of two or more levels of a single feature dimension, even when those levels differ categorically from those of the distractor dots. The results also show a smaller, but still observable decrement in performance that results when there is heterogeneity in the distractor dots.

Peters and Lau (eLife, 4, e09651, 2015) found that when criterion bias is controlled for, there is no evidence for unconscious visual perception in normal observers, in the sense that they cannot directly discriminate a target above chance without knowing it. One criticism of that study is that the visual suppression method used, forward and backward masking (FBM), may be too blunt in the way it interferes with visual processing to allow for unconscious forced-choice discrimination. To investigate this question, we compared FBM directly to continuous flash suppression (CFS) in a two-interval forced-choice task. Although CFS is popular, and may be thought of as a more powerful visual suppression technique, we found no difference in the degree of perceptual impairment between the two suppression types. To the extent that CFS impairs perception, both objective discrimination and subjective awareness are impaired to similar degrees under FBM. This pattern was consistently observed across three experiments in which various experimental parameters were varied. These findings provide evidence for an ongoing debate about unconscious perception: normal observers cannot perform forced-choice discrimination tasks unconsciously.

In a complex auditory scene, signals of interest can be distinguished from masking sounds by differences in source location [spatial release from masking (SRM)] and by differences between masker-alone and masker-plus-signal envelopes. This study investigated interactions between those factors in release of masking of 700-Hz tones in an open sound field. Signal and masker sources were colocated in front of the listener, or the signal source was shifted 90° to the side. In Experiment 1, the masker contained a 25-Hz-wide on-signal band plus flanking bands having envelopes that were either mutually uncorrelated or were comodulated. Comodulation masking release (CMR) was largely independent of signal location at a higher masker sound level, but at a lower level CMR was reduced for the lateral signal location. In Experiment 2, a brief signal was positioned at the envelope maximum (peak) or minimum (dip) of a 50-Hz-wide on-signal masker. Masking was released in dip more than in peak conditions only for the 90° signal. Overall, open-field SRM was greater in magnitude than binaural masking release reported in comparable closed-field studies, and envelope-related release was somewhat weaker. Mutual enhancement of masking release by spatial and envelope-related effects tended to increase with increasing masker level.

ObjectivesTo determine the effectiveness of a customized sound therapy and compare its effectiveness to that of masking with broadband noise.MethodsSubjects were randomized to receive either customized sound therapy or broadband noise for 2 hours per day for 3 months and then switched to the other treatment after a washout period. The outcome variables were tinnitus loudness (scored 0-10), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), minimum masking levels (MML), and residual inhibition (RI).ResultsEighteen subjects completed the study. Mean age was 53 ± 11 years, and mean tinnitus duration was 118 ± 99 months. With customized sound therapy, mean loudness decreased from 6.4 ± 2.0 to 4.9 ± 1.9 ( P = .001), mean THI decreased from 42.8 ± 21.6 to 31.5 ± 20.3 ( P < .001), mean BAI decreased from 10.6 ± 10.9 to 8.3 ± 9.9 ( P = .01), and MML decreased from 22.3 ± 11.6 dB SL to 17.2 ± 10.6 dB SL ( P = .005). After 3 months of broadband noise therapy, only BAI and, to a lesser degree, MML decreased ( P = .003 and .04, respectively).ConclusionsCustomized sound therapy can decrease the loudness and THI scores of tinnitus patients, and the results may be superior to broadband noise.

Speech-in-noise (SIN) perception is a fundamental ability that declines with aging, as does general cognition. We assess whether auditory cognitive ability, in particular short-term memory for sound features, contributes to both. We examined how auditory memory for fundamental sound features, the carrier frequency and amplitude modulation rate of modulated white noise, contributes to SIN perception. We assessed SIN in 153 healthy participants with varying degrees of hearing loss using measures that require single-digit perception (the Digits-in-Noise, DIN) and sentence perception (Speech-in-Babble, SIB). Independent variables were auditory memory and a range of other factors including the Pure Tone Audiogram (PTA), a measure of dichotic pitch-in-noise perception (Huggins pitch), and demographic variables including age and sex. Multiple linear regression models were compared using Bayesian Model Comparison. The best predictor model for DIN included PTA and Huggins pitch (r 2 = 0.32, p < 0.001), whereas the model for SIB included the addition of auditory memory for sound features (r 2 = 0.24, p < 0.001). Further analysis demonstrated that auditory memory also explained a significant portion of the variance (28 %) in scores for a screening cognitive test for dementia. Auditory masking methods originally employed to assess behavioral frequency selectivity have evolved over the years to infer cochlear tuning. Behavioral forward masking thresholds for spectrally notched noise maskers and a fixed, low-level probe tone provide accurate estimates of cochlear tuning. Here, we use this method to investigate the effect of stimulus duration on human cochlear tuning at 500 Hz and 4 kHz. Probes were 20-ms sinusoids at 10 dB sensation level. Maskers were noises with a spectral notch symmetrically and asymmetrically placed around the probe frequency. For seven participants with normal hearing, masker levels at masking threshold were measured in forward masking for various notch widths and for masker durations of 30 and 400 ms. Measurements were fitted assuming rounded exponential filter shapes and the power spectrum model of masking, and equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs) were inferred from the fits. At 4 kHz, masker thresholds were higher for the shorter maskers but ERBs were not significantly different for the two masker durations (ERB 30ms =294 Hz vs. ERB 400ms =277 Hz). At 500 Hz, by contrast, notched-noise curves were shallower for the 30-ms than the 400-ms masker, and ERBs were significantly broader for the shorter masker (ERB 30ms =126 Hz vs. ERB 400ms =55 Hz). We discuss possible factors that may underlay the duration effect at low frequencies and argue that it may not be possible to fully control for those factors. Since the presence of tinnitus is not always associated with audiometric hearing loss, it has been hypothesized that hidden hearing loss may act as a potential trigger for increased central gain along the neural pathway leading to tinnitus perception. In recent years, the study of hidden hearing loss has improved with the discovery of cochlear synaptopathy and several objective diagnostic markers. This study investigated three potential markers of peripheral hidden hearing loss in subjects with tinnitus: extended high-frequency audiometric thresholds, the auditory brainstem response, and the envelope following response. In addition, speech intelligibility was measured as a functional outcome measurement of hidden hearing loss. To account for age-related hidden hearing loss, participants were grouped according to age, presence of tinnitus, and audiometric thresholds. Group comparisons were conducted to differentiate between age- and tinnitus-related effects of hidden hearing loss. All three markers revealed age-related differences, whereas no differences were observed between the tinnitus and non-tinnitus groups. However, the older tinnitus group showed improved performance on low-pass filtered speech in noise tests compared to the older non-tinnitus group. These low-pass speech in noise scores were significantly correlated with tinnitus distress, as indicated using questionnaires, and could be related to the presence of hyperacusis. Based on our observations, cochlear synaptopathy does not appear to be the underlying cause of tinnitus. The improvement in low-pass speech-in-noise could be explained by enhanced temporal fine structure encoding or hyperacusis. Objective: To analyze the Benefit of Modulated Masking (BMM) on hearing in young, adult and elderly normal-hearing individuals., Methods: The sample included 60 normal-hearing individuals aged 18-75 years who underwent behavioral assessment (sentence recognition test in the presence of steady and modulated noise) and electrophysiological assessment (cortical Auditory Evoked Potential) to investigate BMM. The results were analyzed comparatively using the paired t-test and ANOVA for repeated measures, followed by the Bonferroni post-hoc test (p-value < 0.05)., Results: A decrease in latencies and an increase in amplitudes of cortical components (P1-N1-P2) was observed due to noise modulation in all age groups. Modulated noise generated better auditory threshold responses (electrophysiological and behavioral), compared to steady noise. The elderly presented a higher threshold in both hearing domains, compared to the other participants, as well as a lower BMM magnitude., Conclusion: It was possible to conclude that the modulated noise generated less interference in the magnitude of the neural response (smaller latencies) and in the neural processing time (larger amplitudes) for the speech stimulus in all participants. Band importance functions for speech-in-noise recognition, typically determined in the presence of steady background noise, indicate a negligible role for extended high frequencies (EHFs; 8-20 kHz). However, recent findings indicate that EHF cues support speech recognition in multi-talker environments, particularly when the masker has reduced EHF levels relative to the target. This scenario can occur in natural auditory scenes when the target talker is facing the listener, but the maskers are not. In this study, we measured the importance of five bands from 40 to 20 000 Hz for speech-in-speech recognition by notch-filtering the bands individually. Stimuli consisted of a female target talker recorded from 0° and a spatially co-located two-talker female masker recorded either from 0° or 56.25°, simulating a masker either facing the listener or facing away, respectively. Results indicated peak band importance in the 0.4-1.3 kHz band and a negligible effect of removing the EHF band in the facing-masker condition. However, in the non-facing condition, the peak was broader and EHF importance was higher and comparable to that of the 3.3-8.3 kHz band in the facing-masker condition. Objective: The present study sought to determine the cochlear frequency regions represented by Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) obtained using the high-pass noise/derived response (HP/DR) technique., Design: Broadband noise sufficient to mask the ABR to 50 dB nHL clicks was HP filtered (96 dB/oct) at 8000, 4000, 2000, 1000 and 500 Hz. Mixed with the clicks and HP noise masker was narrowband noise. Three derived response bands, denoted by the upper and lower high-pass noise frequencies, were obtained: DR4000-2000, DR2000-1000, and DR1000-500., Study Sample: Ten adults with normal hearing, aged 19-27 years (mean age: 22.4 years), were recruited from the community., Results: Frequencies contributing to each DR were determined from the wave V percent amplitude (or latency shift) vs narrowband masker frequency profiles (relative to a no-narrowband-noise condition). Overall, results indicate derived band centre frequencies were closer to the lower HP cut-off frequencies for DR4000-2000 and DR2000-1000, and approximately halfway between the lower HP cut-off and the geometric mean of the two HP frequencies for DR1000-500, with bandwidths of 0.5-1 octave in width., Conclusions: These results confirm the validity of the HP/DR technique for assessing narrow cochlear regions (≤1.0 octave wide), with centre frequencies within ½-octave of the lower HP frequency.

Understanding speech in noisy environments is a challenging task, especially in communication situations with several competing speakers. Despite their ongoing improvement, assistive listening devices and speech processing approaches still do not perform well enough in noisy multi-talker environments, as they may fail to restore the intelligibility of a speaker of interest among competing sound sources. In this study, a quasi-causal deep learning algorithm was developed that can extract the voice of a target speaker, as indicated by a short enrollment utterance, from a mixture of multiple concurrent speakers in background noise. Objective evaluation with computational metrics demonstrated that the speaker-informed algorithm successfully extracts the target speaker from noisy multi-talker mixtures. This was achieved using a single algorithm that generalized to unseen speakers, different numbers of speakers and relative speaker levels, and different speech corpora. Double-blind sentence recognition tests on mixtures of one, two, and three speakers in restaurant noise were conducted with listeners with normal hearing and listeners with hearing loss. Results indicated significant intelligibility improvements with the speaker-informed algorithm of 17% and 31% for people without and with hearing loss, respectively. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that deep learning-based speaker extraction can enhance speech intelligibility in noisy multi-talker environments where uninformed speech enhancement methods fail., (© 2024 Author(s). Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory temporal processing to detect echoes generated by calls that may be emitted at rates reaching 150-200 Hz. High call rates can introduce forward masking perceptual effects that interfere with echo detection; however, bats may have evolved specializations to prevent repetition suppression of auditory responses and facilitate detection of sounds separated by brief intervals. Recovery of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was assessed in two species that differ in the temporal characteristics of their echolocation behaviors: Eptesicus fuscus, which uses high call rates to capture prey, and Carollia perspicillata, which uses lower call rates to avoid obstacles and forage for fruit. We observed significant species differences in the effects of forward masking on ABR wave 1, in which E. fuscus maintained comparable ABR wave 1 amplitudes when stimulated at intervals of <3 ms, whereas post-stimulus recovery in C. perspicillata required 12 ms. When the intensity of the second stimulus was reduced by 20-30 dB relative to the first, however, C. perspicillata showed greater recovery of wave 1 amplitudes. The results demonstrate that species differences in temporal resolution are established at early levels of the auditory pathway and that these differences reflect auditory processing requirements of species-specific echolocation behaviors., (© 2024 Acoustical Society of America.)

Previous research has shown that learning effects are present for speech intelligibility in temporally modulated (TM) noise, but not in stationary noise. The present study aimed to gain more insight into the factors that might affect the time course (the number of trials required to reach stable performance) and size [the improvement in the speech reception threshold (SRT)] of the learning effect. Two hypotheses were addressed: (1) learning effects are present in both TM and spectrally modulated (SM) noise and (2) the time course and size of the learning effect depend on the amount of masking release caused by either TM or SM noise. Eighteen normal-hearing adults (23-62 years) participated in SRT measurements, in which they listened to sentences in six masker conditions, including stationary, TM, and SM noise conditions. The results showed learning effects in all TM and SM noise conditions, but not for the stationary noise condition. The learning effect was related to the size of masking release: a larger masking release was accompanied by an increased time course of the learning effect and a larger learning effect. This study investigated the effect of different types of phonetic training on potential changes in the production and perception of English vowels by Arabic learners of English. Forty-six Arabic learners of English were randomly assigned to one of three high variability vowel training programs: Perception training (High Variability Phonetic Training), Production training, and a Hybrid Training program (production and perception training). Pre- and post-tests (vowel identification, category discrimination, speech recognition in noise, and vowel production) showed that all training types led to improvements in perception and production. There was some evidence that improvements were linked to training type: learners in the Perception Training condition improved in vowel identification but not vowel production, while those in the Production Training condition showed only small improvements in performance on perceptual tasks, but greater improvement in production. Older adults with hearing loss may experience difficulty recognizing speech in noise due to factors related to attenuation (e.g., reduced audibility and sensation levels, SLs) and distortion (e.g., reduced temporal fine structure, TFS, processing). Furthermore, speech recognition may improve when the amplitude modulation spectrum of the speech and masker are non-overlapping. The current study investigated this by filtering the amplitude modulation spectrum into different modulation rates for speech and speech-modulated noise. The modulation depth of the noise was manipulated to vary the SL of speech glimpses. Younger adults with normal hearing and older adults with normal or impaired hearing listened to natural speech or speech vocoded to degrade TFS cues. Control groups of younger adults were tested on all conditions with spectrally shaped speech and threshold matching noise, which reduced audibility to match that of the older hearing-impaired group. All groups benefitted from increased masker modulation depth and preservation of syllabic-rate speech modulations. Older adults with hearing loss had reduced speech recognition across all conditions. In recent studies, psychophysiological measures have been used as markers of listening effort, but there is limited research on the effect of hearing loss on such measures. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of hearing acuity on physiological responses and subjective measures acquired during different levels of listening demand, and to investigate the relationship between these measures. A total of 125 participants (37 males and 88 females, age range 37-72 years, pure-tone average hearing thresholds at the best ear between -5.0 to 68.8 dB HL and asymmetry between ears between 0.0 and 87.5 dB) completed a listening task. A speech reception threshold (SRT) test was used with target sentences spoken by a female voice masked by male speech. Listening demand was manipulated using three levels of intelligibility: 20 % correct speech recognition, 50 %, and 80 % (IL20 %/IL50 %/IL80 %, respectively). During the task, peak pupil dilation (PPD), heart rate (HR), pre-ejection period (PEP), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and skin conductance level (SCL) were measured. For each condition, subjective ratings of effort, performance, difficulty, and tendency to give up were also collected. Linear mixed effects models tested the effect of intelligibility level, hearing acuity, hearing asymmetry, and tinnitus complaints on the physiological reactivity (compared to baseline) and subjective measures. PPD and PEP reactivity showed a non-monotonic relationship with intelligibility level, but no such effects were found for HR, RSA, or SCL reactivity. Participants with worse hearing acuity had lower PPD at all intelligibility levels and showed lower PEP baseline levels. Additionally, PPD and SCL reactivity were lower for participants who reported suffering from tinnitus complaints. For IL80 %, but not IL50 % or IL20 %, participants with worse hearing acuity rated their listening effort to be relatively high compared to participants with better hearing. The reactivity of the different physiological measures were not or only weakly correlated with each other. Together, the results suggest that hearing acuity may be associated with altered sympathetic nervous system (re)activity. Combining cochlear implants with binaural acoustic hearing via preserved hearing in the implanted ear(s) is commonly referred to as combined electric and acoustic stimulation (EAS). EAS fittings can provide patients with significant benefit for speech recognition in complex noise, perceived listening difficulty, and horizontal-plane localization as compared to traditional bimodal hearing conditions with contralateral and monaural acoustic hearing. However, EAS benefit varies across patients and the degree of benefit is not reliably related to the underlying audiogram. Previous research has indicated that EAS benefit for speech recognition in complex listening scenarios and localization is significantly correlated with the patients' binaural cue sensitivity, namely interaural time differences (ITD). In the context of pure tones, interaural phase differences (IPD) and ITD can be understood as two perspectives on the same phenomenon. Through simple mathematical conversion, one can be transformed into the other, illustrating their inherent interrelation for spatial hearing abilities. However, assessing binaural cue sensitivity is not part of a clinical assessment battery as psychophysical tasks are time consuming, require training to achieve performance asymptote, and specialized programming and software all of which render this clinically unfeasible. In this study, we investigated the possibility of using an objective measure of binaural cue sensitivity by the acoustic change complex (ACC) via imposition of an IPD of varying degrees at stimulus midpoint. Ten adult listeners with normal hearing were assessed on tasks of behavioral and objective binaural cue sensitivity for carrier frequencies of 250 and 1000 Hz. Results suggest that 1) ACC amplitude increases with IPD; 2) ACC-based IPD sensitivity for 250 Hz is significantly correlated with behavioral ITD sensitivity; 3) Participants were more sensitive to IPDs at 250 Hz as compared to 1000 Hz. Thus, this objective measure of IPD sensitivity may hold clinical application for pre- and post-operative assessment for individuals meeting candidacy indications for cochlear implantation with low-frequency acoustic hearing preservation as this relatively quick and objective measure may provide clinicians with information identifying patients most likely to derive benefit from EAS technology., (Copyright © 2024. Objective: To determine the reliability and validity of the Quick Repeat-Recall Test (Q-RRT)., Design: Within-subject repeated measures. Participants completed the Q-RRT at a speech level of 75 dB SPL in 2 noise configurations at signal-to-noise ratios of 5, 10, and 15 dB in a counterbalanced order, along with the full-RRT. The Q-RRT was repeated after 1-3 weeks to estimate within-session and between-session reliability. Participants also completed external validation measures relating speech-in-noise ability (Hearing-In-Noise Test, HINT), memory (Reading Span Test, RST; Forward Digit Span Test, DST-F), and noise acceptance (Tracking of Noise Tolerance, TNT)., Study Sample: Twenty-five normal-hearing listeners (mean age = 63.9 years)., Results: Group Repeat and Recall scores were similar between the full-RRT and the Q-RRT. However, Listening Effort and Tolerable Time ratings were significantly poorer for the full-RRT than the Q-RRT. The average repeat scores correlated with the HINT scores, while the recall scores correlated with the DST-F and RST scores. Tolerable Time ratings also correlated with the TNT scores. Within-session and between-session test-retest reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients were fair-to-excellent (0.41-0.91) depending on the outcome measures., Conclusions: The Q-RRT is a reliable and valid measure of speech-in-noise ability, working memory, listening effort, and noise acceptance.

Objectives: The Children's English and Spanish Speech Recognition (ChEgSS) test is a computer-based tool for assessing closed-set word recognition in English and in Spanish, with a masker that is either speech-shaped noise or competing speech. The present study was conducted to (1) characterize the psychometric properties of the ChEgSS test, (2) evaluate feasibility and reliability for a large cohort of Spanish/English bilingual children with normal hearing, and (3) establish normative data., Design: Three experiments were conducted to evaluate speech perception in children (4-17 years) and adults (19-40 years) with normal hearing using the ChEgSS test. In Experiment 1, data were collected from Spanish/English bilingual and English monolingual adults at multiple, fixed signal-to-noise ratios. Psychometric functions were fitted to the word-level data to characterize variability across target words in each language and in each masker condition. In Experiment 2, Spanish/English bilingual adults were tested using an adaptive tracking procedure to evaluate the influence of different target-word normalization approaches on the reliability of estimates of masked-speech recognition thresholds corresponding to 70.7% correct word recognition and to determine the optimal number of reversals needed to obtain reliable estimates. In Experiment 3, Spanish/English bilingual and English monolingual children completed speech perception testing using the ChEgSS test to (1) characterize feasibility across age and language group, (2) evaluate test-retest reliability, and (3) establish normative data., Results: Experiments 1 and 2 yielded data that are essential for stimulus normalization, optimizing threshold estimation procedures, and interpreting threshold data across test language and masker type. Findings obtained from Spanish/English bilingual and English monolingual children with normal hearing in Experiment 3 support feasibility and demonstrate reliability for use with children as young as 4 years of age. Equivalent results for testing in English and Spanish were observed for Spanish/English bilingual children, contingent on adequate proficiency in the target language. Regression-based threshold norms were established for Spanish/English bilingual and English monolingual children between 4 and 17 years of age., Conclusions: The present findings indicate the ChEgSS test is appropriate for testing a wide age range of children with normal hearing in either Spanish, English, or both languages. The ChEgSS test is currently being evaluated in a large cohort of patients with hearing loss at pediatric audiology clinics across the United States. Results will be compared with normative data established in the present study and with established clinical measures used to evaluate English- and Spanish-speaking children. One major motivation for introducing Reversible Data Hiding (RDH) techniques in biometric systems is the need to provide a higher security level to biometric images without compromising their recognition accuracy. In this paper, a novel RDH scheme that merges the advantages of both image interpolation approaches and the transform-based data hiding schemes is proposed for fingerprint images. Since the secret data is hidden into the transform coefficients, the proposed scheme relies on setting back the reference pixels to their original values to maintain cover image reversibility. To compensate for the distortions induced by the aforementioned operation, we have adapted the robust DM-QIM embedding method, designed an enhanced perceptual masking model for fingerprint images and developed a novel iterative correction algorithm. As a result, the proposed scheme allows to achieve error-free embedding with no extra information needed for image or secret data recovery. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can effectively ensure full system reversibility and provides higher performance in terms of embedding capacity and visual quality when compared with recent state-of-the-art techniques. In peripheral vision, object identification can be impeded when a target object is flanked by other objects. This phenomenon of crowding has been attributed to basic processes associated with image encoding by the visual system, but the neural origin of crowding is not known. Determining whether crowding depends on subjective awareness of the flankers can provide information on the neural origin of crowding. However, recent studies that manipulated flanker awareness have yielded conflicting results. In the current study, we suppressed flanker awareness with two methods: interocular suppression (IOS) and adaptation-induced blindness (AIB). We tested two different types of stimuli: gratings and letters. With IOS, we found that the magnitude of crowding increased as the number of physical flankers increased, even when the observers did not report seeing any of the flankers. In contrast, when flanker awareness was manipulated with AIB, the magnitude of crowding increased with the number of perceived flankers. Our results show that whether crowding is contingent on awareness of the flankers depends on the method used to suppress awareness. In addition, our results imply that the locus of crowding is upstream from the neural locus of IOS and close to or downstream from that of AIB. Neurophysiology and neuroimaging studies jointly implicate mid-to-high level visual processing stages for IOS, while direct evidence regarding the neural locus of AIB is limited. The most consistent interpretation of our empirical findings is to place the neural locus of crowding at an early cortical site, such as V1 or V2.

Patients with schizophrenia show specific abnormalities in visual perception, and patients with bipolar disorder may have related perceptual deficits. During tasks that highlight perceptual dysfunction, patients with schizophrenia show abnormal activity in visual brain areas, including the lateral occipital complex (LOC) and early retinotopic cortex. It is unclear whether the anatomical structure of those visual areas is atypical in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In members of those two patient groups and healthy controls, we localized LOC and early retinotopic cortex individually for each participant using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), then measured the thickness of those regions of interest using structural MRI scans. In both regions, patients with schizophrenia had the thinnest cortex, controls had the thickest cortex, and bipolar patients had intermediate cortical thickness. A control region, motor cortex, did not show this pattern of group differences. The thickness of each visual region of interest was significantly correlated with performance on a visual object masking task, but only in schizophrenia patients. These findings suggest an anatomical substrate for visual processing abnormalities that have been found with both neural and behavioral measures in schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses.

Humans are adept at understanding speech despite the fact that our natural listening environment is often filled with interference. An example of this capacity is phoneme restoration, in which part of a word is completely replaced by noise, yet listeners report hearing the whole word. The neurological basis for this unconscious fill-in phenomenon is unknown, despite being a fundamental characteristic of human hearing. Here, using direct cortical recordings in humans, we demonstrate that missing speech is restored at the acoustic-phonetic level in bilateral auditory cortex, in real-time. This restoration is preceded by specific neural activity patterns in a separate language area, left frontal cortex, which predicts the word that participants later report hearing. These results demonstrate that during speech perception, missing acoustic content is synthesized online from the integration of incoming sensory cues and the internal neural dynamics that bias word-level expectation and prediction.

Perception is shaped not only by current sensory inputs but also by expectations generated from past sensory experience. Humans viewing ambiguous stimuli in a stable visual environment are generally more likely to see the perceptual interpretation that matches their expectations, but it is less clear how expectations affect perception when the environment is changing predictably. We used statistical learning to teach observers arbitrary sequences of natural images and employed binocular rivalry to measure perceptual selection as a function of predictive context. In contrast to previous demonstrations of preferential selection of predicted images for conscious awareness, we found that recently acquired sequence predictions biased perceptual selection toward unexpected natural images and image categories. These perceptual biases were not associated with explicit recall of the learned image sequences. Our results show that exposure to arbitrary sequential structure in the environment impacts subsequent visual perceptual selection and awareness. Specifically, for natural image sequences, the visual system prioritizes what is surprising, or statistically informative, over what is expected, or statistically likely.

Stimuli that are briefly presented around the time of saccades are often perceived with spatiotemporal distortions. These distortions do not always have deleterious effects on the visibility and identification of a stimulus. Recent studies reported that when a stimulus is the target of an intended saccade, it is released from both masking and crowding. Here, we investigated pre-saccadic changes in single and crowded letter recognition performance in the absence (Experiment 1) and the presence (Experiment 2) of backward masks to determine the extent to which saccadic "uncrowding" and "unmasking" mechanisms are similar. Our results show that pre-saccadic improvements in letter recognition performance are mostly due to the presence of masks and/or stimulus transients which occur after the target is presented. More importantly, we did not find any decrease in crowding strength before impending saccades. A simplified version of a dual-channel neural model, originally proposed to explain masking phenomena, with several saccadic add-on mechanisms, could account for our results in Experiment 1. However, this model falls short in explaining how saccades drastically reduced the effect of backward masking (Experiment 2). The addition of a remapping mechanism that alters the relative spatial positions of stimuli was needed to fully account for the improvements observed when backward masks followed the letter stimuli. Taken together, our results (i) are inconsistent with saccadic uncrowding, (ii) strongly support saccadic unmasking, and (iii) suggest that pre-saccadic letter recognition is modulated by multiple perisaccadic mechanisms with different time courses.

Listeners can perceive interleaved sequences of sounds from two or more sources as segregated streams. In humans, physical separation of sound sources is a major factor enabling such stream segregation. Here, we examine spatial stream segregation with a psychophysical measure in domestic cats. Cats depressed a pedal to initiate a target sequence of brief sound bursts in a particular rhythm and then released the pedal when the rhythm changed. The target bursts were interleaved with a competing sequence of bursts that could differ in source location but otherwise were identical to the target bursts. This task was possible only when the sources were heard as segregated streams. When the sound bursts had broad spectra, cats could detect the rhythm change when target and competing sources were separated by as little as 9.4°. Essentially equal levels of performance were observed when frequencies were restricted to a high, 4-to-25-kHz, band in which the principal spatial cues presumably were related to sound levels. When the stimulus band was restricted from 0.4 to 1.6 kHz, leaving interaural time differences as the principal spatial cue, performance was severely degraded. The frequency sensitivity of cats in this task contrasts with that of humans, who show better spatial stream segregation with low- than with high-frequency sounds. Possible explanations for the species difference includes the smaller interaural delays available to cats due to smaller sizes of their heads and the potentially greater sound-level cues available due to the cat's frontally directed pinnae and higher audible frequency range.

Nearby collinear flankers increase the false alarm rate (reports of the target being present when it is not) in a Yes-No experiment. This effect has been attributed to "filling-in" of the target location due to increased activity induced by the flankers. According to signal detection theory, false alarms are attributed to noise in the visual nervous system. Here we investigated the effect of external noise on the filling-in effect by adding white noise to a low contrast Gabor target presented between two collinear Gabor flankers at a range of target-flanker separations. External noise modulates the filling-in effect, reducing visual sensitivity (d') and increasing the filling-in effect (False Alarm rate). We estimated the amount of external noise at which the false alarm rate increases by the √2 (which we refer to as NFA). Across flank distances, both the false alarm rate and d' (with no external noise) are correlated with NFA. These results are consistent with the notion that nearby collinear flankers add both signal and noise to the target location. The increased signal results in higher d' values; the increased noise to higher false alarm rates (the filling effect).

Crowding between adjacent letters has been investigated primarily as a spatial effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatio-temporal properties of letter crowding. Specifically, we examined the systematic changes in the degradation effects in letter identification performance when adjacent letters were presented with a temporal asynchrony, as a function of letter separation and between the fovea and the periphery. We measured proportion-correct performance for identifying the middle target letter in strings of three lowercase letters at the fovea and 10° in the inferior visual field, for a range of center-to-center letter separations and a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) between the target and flanking letters (positive SOAs: target preceded flankers). As expected, the accuracy for identifying the target letters reduces with decreases in letter separation. This crowding effect shows a strong dependency on SOAs, such that crowding is maximal between 0 and ∼100 ms (depending on conditions) and diminishes for larger SOAs (positive or negative). Maximal crowding does not require the target and flanking letters to physically coexist for the entire presentation duration. Most importantly, crowding can be minimized even for closely spaced letters if there is a large temporal asynchrony between the target and flankers. The reliance of letter identification performance on SOAs and how it changes with letter separations imply that the crowding effect can be traded between space and time. Our findings are consistent with the notion that crowding should be considered as a spatio-temporal, and not simply a spatial, effect.

Amplitude modulation (AM) of a masker reduces its masking on a simultaneously presented unmodulated pure-tone target, which likely involves dip listening. This study tested the idea that dip-listening efficiency may depend on stimulus context, i.e., the match in AM peakedness (AMP) between the masker and a precursor or postcursor stimulus, assuming a form of temporal pattern analysis process. Masked thresholds were measured in normal-hearing listeners using Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes as maskers and precursors or postcursors. Experiment 1 showed threshold elevation (i.e., interference) when a flat cursor preceded or followed a peaked masker, suggesting proactive and retroactive temporal pattern analysis. Threshold decline (facilitation) was observed when the masker AMP was matched to the precursor, irrespective of stimulus AMP, suggesting only proactive processing. Subsequent experiments showed that both interference and facilitation (1) remained robust when a temporal gap was inserted between masker and cursor, (2) disappeared when an F0-difference was introduced between masker and precursor, and (3) decreased when the presentation level was reduced. These results suggest an important role of envelope regularity in dip listening, especially when masker and cursor are F0-matched and, therefore, form one perceptual stream. Frequency importance functions (FIFs) for simulated bimodal hearing were derived using sentence perception scores measured in quiet and noise. Acoustic hearing was simulated using low-pass filtering. Electric hearing was simulated using a six-channel vocoder with three input frequency ranges, resulting in overlap, meet, and gap maps, relative to the acoustic cutoff frequency. Spectral holes present in the speech spectra were created within electric stimulation by setting amplitude(s) of channels to zero. FIFs were significantly different between frequency maps. In quiet, the three FIFs were similar with gradually increasing weights with channels 5 and 6 compared to the first three channels. However, the most and least weighted channels slightly varied depending on the maps. In noise, the patterns of the three FIFs were similar to those in quiet, with steeper increasing weights with channels 5 and 6 compared to the first four channels. Thus, channels 5 and 6 contributed to speech perception the most, while channels 1 and 2 contributed the least, regardless of frequency maps. Objective: To gather preliminary reference data on older normal-hearing (NH) adults for the refined Tracking of Noise Tolerance (TNT) test., Design: Within-subject repeated measures. Participants were tested on the TNT in the sound-field and under headphones. In the sound-field, speech stimuli were presented at 75 dB SPL and 82 dB SPL from 0° with a speech-shaped noise presented either from 0° or 180° at a level controlled by the participants. The order of signal level, mode of presentation, noise azimuth, and TNT passages were counterbalanced across listeners. Testing was repeated for one condition after 1-3 weeks to estimate within-session and between-session reliability., Study Sample: Twenty-five NH listeners (51-82 yrs of age)., Results: Mean TNT scores (TNT Ave ) were about 4 dB at a speech input of 75 dB SPL and 3 dB at 82 dB SPL. The TNT Ave was similar between the headphone and sound-field presentations in the co-located noise. TNT Ave scores measured with noise-back were about 1 dB better than those measured from the front. The 95% confidence intervals of absolute test-retest differences were about 1.2 dB within-session and 2.0 dB between sessions., Conclusions: The refined TNT may be a reliable tool to measure noise acceptance and subjective speech intelligibility.

Objective: To investigate the extent to which Headphone Accommodations in Apple AirPods Pro attend to the hearing needs of individuals with normal audiograms who experience hearing difficulties in noisy environments., Design: Single-arm interventional study using acoustic measures, speech-in-noise laboratory testing, and real-world measures via questionnaires and ecological momentary assessment., Study Sample: Seventeen normal-hearing individuals (9 female, 21-59 years) with self-reported hearing-in-noise difficulties., Results: Acoustic measures showed that, relative to unaided, AirPods Pro provided a SNR advantage of +5.4 dB. Speech intelligibility performance in laboratory testing increased 11.8% with AirPods Pro, relative to unaided. On average, participants trialling AirPods Pro in real-world noisy venues reported that their overall hearing experience was a bit better than without them. Five participants (29%) reported that they would continue using AirPods Pro in the future. The most relevant barriers that would discourage their future use were limited hearing benefit, discomfort, and stigma., Conclusions: Occasional use of AirPods Pro may help some individuals with normal audiograms ameliorate their speech-in-noise hearing difficulties. The identified barriers may inspire the development of new technological solutions aimed at providing an optimal management strategy for the hearing difficulties of this segment of the population.

A key issue in recent visual word recognition literature is whether text rotation disrupts the early stages of orthographic processing. Previous research found no masked repetition priming effect when primes were rotated ≥90° in alphabetic languages. The present study investigated the impact of text rotation using logographic (two-character Japanese kanji) words. In Experiment 1, we conducted a masked repetition priming lexical decision experiment with upright and 180° rotated primes. The rotated primes produced a significant priming effect, although the effect was smaller than the upright primes. In Experiment 2, we further examined the effectiveness of 180° rotated primes in two different conditions: the whole words were rotated vs. each constituent character was rotated at their own positions. Both prime types produced significant priming effects of similar magnitudes. Young children today are exposed to masks on a regular basis. However, there is limited empirical evidence on how masks may affect word learning. The study explored the effect of masks on infants' abilities to fast-map and generalize new words. Seventy-two Chinese infants (43 males, M age = 18.26 months) were taught two novel word-object pairs by a speaker with or without a mask. They then heard the words and had to visually identify the correct objects and also generalize words to a different speaker and objects from the same category. Eye-tracking results indicate that infants looked longer at the target regardless of whether a speaker wore a mask. They also looked longer at the speaker's eyes than at the mouth only when words were taught through a mask. Thus, fast-mapping and generalization occur in both masked and not masked conditions as infants can flexibly access different visual cues during word-learning.

Spatial separation and fundamental frequency (F0) separation are effective cues for improving the intelligibility of target speech in multi-talker scenarios. Previous studies predominantly focused on spatial configurations within the frontal hemifield, overlooking the ipsilateral side and the entire median plane, where localization confusion often occurs. This study investigated the impact of spatial and F0 separation on intelligibility under the above-mentioned underexplored spatial configurations. The speech reception thresholds were measured through three experiments for scenarios involving two to four talkers, either in the ipsilateral horizontal plane or in the entire median plane, utilizing monotonized speech with varying F0s as stimuli. The results revealed that spatial separation in symmetrical positions (front-back symmetry in the ipsilateral horizontal plane or front-back, up-down symmetry in the median plane) contributes positively to intelligibility. Both target direction and relative target-masker separation influence the masking release attributed to spatial separation. As the number of talkers exceeds two, the masking release from spatial separation diminishes. Nevertheless, F0 separation remains as a remarkably effective cue and could even facilitate spatial separation in improving intelligibility. During the global COVID-19 pandemic, the wearing of face masks became a common practice, raising questions about how masks affect perceptions of and behaviour towards others. Numerous studies have explored the impact of face masks on perceptions of trustworthiness, but results have been mixed and it remains unclear whether masks influence perceptions via their social meaning or their effects on facial appearance. In this study, Australian participants ( N  = 363) rated a series of faces which were either masked, unmasked, or occluded by a non-mask object (computer) in terms of perceived trustworthiness in 2020, 2022, or 2023. The apparent trustworthiness of unmasked faces remained stable across years, but masked faces were rated significantly more trustworthy in 2020 compared to 2022 and 2023. Furthermore, ratings of masked faces, but not unmasked faces, were correlated with participants' attitudes towards wearing masks. Faces occluded by a non-mask object were perceived to be less trustworthy than masked faces. Medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents modulate outer hair cell motility through specialized nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to support encoding of signals in noise. Transgenic mice lacking the alpha9 subunits of these receptors (α9KOs) have normal hearing in quiet and noise, but lack classic cochlear suppression effects and show abnormal temporal, spectral, and spatial processing. Mice deficient for both the alpha9 and alpha10 receptor subunits (α9α10KOs) may exhibit more severe MOC-related phenotypes. Like α9KOs, α9α10KOs have normal auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and weak MOC reflexes. Here, we further characterized auditory function in α9α10KO mice. Wild-type (WT) and α9α10KO mice had similar ABR thresholds and acoustic startle response amplitudes in quiet and noise, and similar frequency and intensity difference sensitivity. α9α10KO mice had larger ABR Wave I amplitudes than WTs in quiet and noise. Other ABR metrics of hearing-in-noise function yielded conflicting findings regarding α9α10KO susceptibility to masking effects. α9α10KO mice also had larger startle amplitudes in tone backgrounds than WTs. Overall, α9α10KO mice had grossly normal auditory function in quiet and noise, although their larger ABR amplitudes and hyperreactive startles suggest some auditory processing abnormalities. Objective: Currently, the variety of speech recognition tests used to evaluate cochlear implant (CI) recipients makes it difficult to compare results, especially across languages. The Matrix Test limits contextual cues and is available in multiple languages, including American English. The current study investigated test format and noise type for the American English Matrix Test (AMT) and compared results to AzBio sentence scores in adult CI recipients., Design: Fifteen experienced CI recipients were administered the AMT in fixed- and adaptive-level formats and AzBio sentences in a fixed-level format. Testing in noise used the AMT-specific noise and 4-talker babble., Results: Ceiling effects were present for all AMT fixed-level conditions and AzBio sentences in quiet. Group mean AzBio scores were poorer than AMT scores. Noise type affected performance regardless of format; 4-talker babble was more challenging., Conclusions: The limited number of word choices in each category likely aided listeners performance for the AMT compared to AzBio sentences. The use of the AMT in the designed adaptive-level format would allow effective evaluation and comparison of CI performance internationally. A test battery with the AMT may also benefit from including AzBio sentences in 4-talker babble to reflect performance during listening challenges.

Ambient sound can mask acoustic signals. The current study addressed how echolocation in people is affected by masking sound, and the role played by type of sound and spatial (i.e. binaural) similarity. We also investigated the role played by blindness and long-term experience with echolocation, by testing echolocation experts, as well as blind and sighted people new to echolocation. Results were obtained in two echolocation tasks where participants listened to binaural recordings of echolocation and masking sounds, and either localized echoes in azimuth or discriminated echo audibility. Echolocation and masking sounds could be either clicks or broad band noise. An adaptive staircase method was used to adjust signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) based on participants' responses. When target and masker had the same binaural cues (i.e. both were monoaural sounds), people performed better (i.e. had lower SNRs) when target and masker used different types of sound (e.g. clicks in noise-masker or noise in clicks-masker), as compared to when target and masker used the same type of sound (e.g. clicks in click-, or noise in noise-masker). A very different pattern of results was observed when masker and target differed in their binaural cues, in which case people always performed better when clicks were the masker, regardless of type of emission used. Further, direct comparison between conditions with and without binaural difference revealed binaural release from masking only when clicks were used as emissions and masker, but not otherwise (i.e. when noise was used as masker or emission). This suggests that echolocation with clicks or noise may differ in their sensitivity to binaural cues. We observed the same pattern of results for echolocation experts, and blind and sighted people new to echolocation, suggesting a limited role played by long-term experience or blindness. Visual detection is a fundamental natural task. Detection becomes more challenging as the similarity between the target and the background in which it is embedded increases, a phenomenon termed 'similarity masking'. To test the hypothesis that V1 contributes to similarity masking, we used voltage sensitive dye imaging (VSDI) to measure V1 population responses while macaque monkeys performed a detection task under varying levels of target-background similarity. Paradoxically, we find that during an initial transient phase, V1 responses to the target are enhanced, rather than suppressed, by target-background similarity. This effect reverses in the second phase of the response, so that in this phase V1 signals are positively correlated with the behavioral effect of similarity. Finally, we show that a simple model with delayed divisive normalization can qualitatively account for our findings. The processing and perception of amplitude modulation (AM) in the auditory system reflect a frequency-selective process, often described as a modulation filterbank. Previous studies on perceptual AM masking reported similar results for older listeners with hearing impairment (HI listeners) and young listeners with normal hearing (NH listeners), suggesting no effects of age or hearing loss on AM frequency selectivity. However, recent evidence has shown that age, independently of hearing loss, adversely affects AM frequency selectivity. Hence, this study aimed to disentangle the effects of hearing loss and age. A simultaneous AM masking paradigm was employed, using a sinusoidal carrier at 2.8 kHz, narrowband noise modulation maskers, and target modulation frequencies of 4, 16, 64, and 128 Hz. The results obtained from young (n = 3, 24-30 years of age) and older (n = 10, 63-77 years of age) HI listeners were compared to previously obtained data from young and older NH listeners. Notably, the HI listeners generally exhibited lower (unmasked) AM detection thresholds and greater AM frequency selectivity than their NH counterparts in both age groups.
