Abstract

The present study aimed at exploring adaptive mechanisms underlying the development of musical competence and, in particular, at qualifying and quantifying differences in cognitive functioning between people with and without musical training, as measured by electroencephalographic (EEG) and behavioral responses during an experimental task tapping into attention and monitoring mechanisms. Eighteen participants took part in the study. EEG responses to an omitted tone task were processed to compute their spatial components and time/frequency dynamics (power spectra, event-related spectral perturbation, and inter-trial coherence). In general, musicians showed greater EEG reactivity than control participants, which might signal adaptive changes linked to trained musical competence. Furthermore, musicians also performed better than controls, suggesting greater cognitive efficiency. Present findings also provide evidence that EEG is a valuable tool to help our understanding of adaptive mechanisms fostered by musical training and that it may complement behavioral methods to test performance.

Abstract

Mild endurance exercise training positively affects limb skeletal muscle in the mdx mice model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). However, few and controversial data are available on the effects of mild exercise training on the diaphragm of mdx mice. The diaphragm was examined in mdx and wild type mice either under sedentary conditions (mdx-SD, WT-SD) or during mild exercise training (mdx-EX, WT-EX). At baseline and after 30 and 45 days of training (5 d/wk for 6 weeks), diaphragm muscle morphology and Cx39 protein were assessed. In addition, tissue levels of the chaperonin Hsp60 were measured at the same time points in gastrocnemius, quadriceps and diaphragm in each experimental group. Although morphological analysis showed unchanged total area of necrosis/regeneration in the diaphragm after training, there was a trend for regeneration areas to be larger than necrosis areas. However, the levels of Cx39 protein, a marker associated with active degeneration-regeneration process in damaged muscle were similar in the diaphragm of mdx-EX and mdx-SD mice. The diaphragm, but not limb muscles, of both trained and sedentary mdx mice showed decreased Hsp60 expression at 45 days, suggesting exhaustion of potentially protective mechanisms in the diaphragm similar to previous findings in lung epithelium. Compared to the positive effects of exercise training previously observed in limb skeletal muscles, the diaphragm showed little change after training.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not chronic exercise could cause long-term metabolic plasticity in cerebellum. The activity of cytochrome oxidase (COX), coupled to ATP production, reflects long-term plasticity in metabolic capacity. The present study examined whether or not 10 weeks of voluntary exercise would increase COX activity in the cerebellum. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a control or exercise condition. Exercising rats had running wheels attached to their home cages. COX activity was measured using histochemical methods and optical densitometry. Rats in the exercise condition had significantly higher optical density in spinocerebellum (mainly in lobules 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 and in the copula), but not in neocerebellar crura I and II.
