The need for clean, renewable energy has driven the expansion of renewable energy generators, such as wind and solar. However, to achieve a robust and responsive electrical grid based on such inherently intermittent renewable energy sources, grid-scale energy storage is essential. The unmet need for this critical component has motivated extensive grid-scale battery research, especially exploring chemistries "beyond Li-ion". Among others, molten sodium (Na) batteries, which date back to the 1960s with Na-S, have seen a strong revival, owing mostly to raw material abundance and the excellent electrochemical properties of Na metal. Recently, many groups have demonstrated important advances in battery chemistries, electrolytes, and interfaces to lower material and operating costs, enhance cyclability, and understand key mechanisms that drive failure in molten Na batteries. For widespread implementation of molten Na batteries, though, further optimization, cost reduction, and mechanistic insight is necessary. In this light, this work provides a brief history of mature molten Na technologies, a comprehensive review of recent progress, and explores possibilities for future advancements. In this technical note, we report a process in scaling down the fabrication of Au disk nanoelectrodes as small as ~4 nm in radii. We have developed a bottom-up approach toward the fabrication of individual disk-shape Au nanoelectrodes. This new approach is based upon electrochemical deposition of Au in a silica nanopore electrode and involves the following four steps. First, a laser-assisted pulling process is employed to fabricate a disk-shape Pt nanoelectrode. Second, a Pt nanopore electrode is obtained by electrochemically etching the Pt from the disk nanoelectrode. Third, a Au metal nanowire is electrochemically deposited using the Pt nanopore electrode as a template. In the last step, the Au electrode is slightly polished to expose a disk-shape Au nanoelectrode, whose size is determined by the size of the initial Pt nanoelectrode. Steady-state voltammetry in the presence of ferrocene has been used to characterize these Au nanoelectrodes. The Au nanoelectrodes are also characterized using cyclic voltammetry in a [H.sub.2]S[O.sub.4] solution. The results show characteristic peaks corresponding to the formation of Au surface oxides and their subsequent reduction. The Au nanoelectrodes are modified with 6-(ferrocenyl)hexanethiol molecules, and cyclic voltammetry is used to characterize the ferrocene molecules attached at the Au. As an application, we have constructed Au single-nanoparticle electrodes (SNPEs) using the Au disk nanoelectrodes fabricated by electrochemical deposition. NaI-AlBr3 is a very appealing low melting temperature (<100 °C), salt system for use as an electrochemically-active electrolyte. This system was investigated for its electrochemical and physical properties with focus to energy storage considerations. A simple phase diagram was generated; at >100 °C, lower NaI concentrations had two partially miscible liquid phases, while higher NaI concentrations had solid particles. Considering the fully molten regime, electrical conductivities were evaluated over 5-25 mol% NaI and 110 °C-140 °C. Conductivities of 6.8-38.9 mS cm-1 were observed, increasing with temperature and NaI concentration. Effective diffusion coefficients of the I-/I3- redox species were found to decrease with both increasing NaI concentration and increasing applied potential. Regardless, oxidation current density at 3.6 V vs Na/Na+ was observed to increase with increasing NaI concentration over 5-25 mol%. Finally, the critical interface between the molten salt electrolyte and electrode materials was found to significantly affect reaction kinetics. When carbon was used instead of tungsten, an adsorbed species, most likely I2, blocked surface sites and significantly decreased current densities at high potentials. This study shows the NaI-AlBr3 system offers an attractive, low-temperature molten salt electrolyte that could be useful to many applied systems, though composition and electrode material must be considered. Molten salt electrolytes show promise as safe, effective elements of emerging low to intermediate temperature molten sodium batteries. Here we investigate the NaI-AlCl3 molten salt system for its electrochemical and physical properties at 150 and 180°, temperatures recently used to demonstrate a new NaI battery using this molten salt system. Molten salt compositions ranging from 20-75% NaI were prepared and electrochemically interrogated with carbon fiber ultramicroelectrodes utilizing cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and differential pulse voltammetry. Results indicate that at very high or very low NaI concentrations, secondary phases present hinder diffusion of the redox-active species, potentially impacting the current density of the system. Furthermore, a concentration-independent chronoamperometric analysis technique was tleveraged to determine effective diffusion coefficients of active I- in the melt phase. Collectively, the physical characterization and electrochemical properties of the tested salts indicate that the catholyte composition can significantly affect the physical state, current density, ionic diffusion, and voltage window of these promising NaI-AlCl3 molten salt battery catholytes. The cathodic dissolution of platinum, resulting from the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) or hydrogen peroxide reduction on platinum, has been investigated. Highly oxidizing hydroxyl radicals (OH•) are believed to be the species responsible for the platinum dissolution phenomenon. These radicals are produced from the ORR byproduct, hydrogen peroxide, through a 1 electron reduction pathway (H2O2 + e- → OH• + OH-). Platinum ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) were polarized sufficiently negative to drive the ORR or H2O2 reduction on the platinum surface, mainly using square wave potential pulses but constant applied potential and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were also investigated. The dissolved platinum was detected using a femtomolar level detection technique which involves reducing platinum ions to platinum metal species followed by an electrocatalytic amplification of proton reduction on an inert carbon fiber electrode. This method has allowed the quantification of the amount of platinum metal dissolved into the solution, from which the rate of platinum dissolution could be determined. Additionally, the detection method demonstrates the platinum is dissolved into the solution as an ionic species and does not form metallic nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here we report the preparation, characterization, and electrochemical study of conductive, ultrathin films of cross-linked metal nanoparticles (NPs). Nanoporous films ranging from 40 to 200 nm in thickness composed of gold and platinum NPs of ∼5 nm were fabricated via a powerful layer-by-layer spin coating process. This process allows preparation of uniform NP films as large as 2 × 2 cm² with precise control over thickness, structure, and electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties. Gold, platinum, and bimetallic NP films were fabricated and characterized using cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, and conductance measurements. Their electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated. Our results show that the electrochemical activity of such NP films is initially hindered by the presence of dense thiolate cross-linking ligands. Both electrochemical cycling and oxygen plasma cleaning are effective means in restoring their electrochemical activity. Gold NP films have higher electric conductivity than platinum possibly due to more uniform film structure and closer particle-particle distance. The electrochemical and electrocatalytic performance of platinum NP films can be greatly enhanced by the incorporation of gold NPs. This work focuses on electrochemical characterization of cross-linked NP films and demonstrates several unique properties. These include quick and easy preparation, ultrathin and uniform film thickness, tunable structure and composition, and transferability to many other substrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
