1. Phase distortions of attosecond pulses produced by resonance-enhanced high harmonic generation

Abstract

Resonant enhancement of high harmonic generation can be obtained in plasmas containing ions with strong radiative transitions resonant with harmonic orders. The mechanism for this enhancement is still debated. We perform the first temporal characterization of the attosecond emission from a tin plasma under near-resonant conditions for two different resonance detunings. We show that the resonance considerably changes the relative phase of neighbouring harmonics. For very small detunings, their phase locking may even be lost, evidencing strong phase distortions in the emission process and a modified attosecond structure. These features are well reproduced by our simulations, allowing their interpretation in terms of the phase of the recombination dipole moment. more...

Abstract

Absolute Ar XK (3 keV) and Xe XL (4 keV) photon yields are measured as a function of laser peak intensity, for large (104 - 105 atoms) argon and xenon clusters submitted to intense laser pulses. A clear threshold behavior is observed. The intensity threshold is found as low as 2 1014 Wcm-2, a value matching the production of singly-charged argon or doubly-charged xenon by optical field ionization. Possible mechanisms involved in the inner-shell ionization are discussed. Abstract

The formation of negative ions by electron attachment in collisions of He atoms in the well-defined low-Rydberg state (n=14)1P with SF6 is studied as a function of the relative velocity of the reactants in a crossed-beam experiment at thermal energies. The data show that the cross section does not follow the behavior predicted by the free electron model; it presents a maximum and then decreases at low kinetic energy, thus providing a direct observation of the postattachment Coulomb interaction of the He+ and SF-6 product ions. It is assumed that, at low kinetic energy, rovibrational energy of SF-6 and SF6 which coexist inside a temporary collision complex (He+SF6)-, is transferred into translational energy of the collision products, allowing SF-6 and He+ to escape from the collision complex with reduced vibrational energy in SF-6 and increased kinetic energy of He+. Both can thus be detected even when the ion pair He+–SF-6 is expected to stay bound. This explains qualitatively the nonzero value of the cross section in this low kinetic energy range. At high kinetic energy, transfer of translational energy into rovibrational energy is assumed to occur inside the collision complex, leading to SF-6 ions with increased vibrational energy and thus shorter lifetime against autodetachment. Abstract

Photofragmentation of mass-selected C+16 to C+36 clusters is investigated at two laser wavelengths: 532 and 355 nm. The depletion dependence on laser fluence leads to the number of absorbed photons, together with the photoabsorption cross section. From the knowledge of the internal energy deposited in the clusters before the fragmentation step, the dissociation energies are deduced. Abstract

International audience; The interaction between short laser pulses (electric field > 109 V/m) and Van Der Waals clusters induces an intense electronic excitation of the matter. In particular, the energy coupling between the radiation and the matter is much more efficient than for atomic or solid targets. Experimentally, highly charged ions (like Xe40+), energetic electrons (with Ekin > 3keV) and keV x-rays have been observed. Whereas many studies concentrated on ion emission yields [1], we are interested on the x-ray production (E > 1 keV) when large rare gas cluster ((Ar)n, (Kr)n and (Xe)n with n>104 atoms/cluster) are submitted to intense (up to 5 1017 W/cm2) ultra - short (50 fs to 1 ps) laser pulses (IR-800 nm or UV-400 nm). The x-rays observed are emitted by highly charged ions: for example, from Ar11+ to Ar16+ with K vacancies in the case of Ar clusters [2] and from Xeq+ with q " 24 with L vacancies in the case of xenon. Our goal is to understand how electrons initially produced by optical field ionisation can reach enough energy to generate a strong production of ions with inner shell vacancies. Because the heating mechanisms involved remain controversial, we perform studies, under well-controlled conditions, on the evolution of the absolute photon emission yields and the complete charge state distribution with different physical parameters governing the interaction (like intensity, polarization, and wavelength of the laser, size and density of the clusters). Abstract

We present single shot nanoscale imaging using a table-top femtosecond soft X-ray laser harmonic source at a wavelength of 32 nm. We show that the phase retrieval process in coherent diffractive imaging critically depends on beam quality. Coherence and image fidelity are measured from single-shot coherent diffraction patterns of isolated nano-patterned slits. Impact of flux, wave front and coherence of the soft X-ray beam on the phase retrieval process and the image quality are discussed. After beam improvements, a final image reconstruction is presented with a spatial resolution of 78 nm (half period) in a single 20 fs laser harmonic shot. more...

Abstract

Performed studies of keV X-ray production from (Ar)n, (Kr)n and (Xe)n rare gas clusters (with n between 104 and 106 atoms/cluster) submitted to intense (18 W/cm2) infrared (800 nm) laser pulses. Up to 106 3 keV photons per pulse at a moderate (1015/cm3) atomic density have been observed. High resolution spectroscopy studies in the case of (Ar)n clusters have also been performed, giving unambiguous evidence of highly charge (up to heliumlike) ions with K vacancies production. We have determined the photon energies and the absolute photon emission yields as a function of several physical parameters governing the interaction: size and atomic number of the clusters, peak intensity of the laser. Unexpectedly low laser intensity thresholds ( approximately=1015 Wcm-2) have been measured.
