Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the levels of Burnout Syndrome (BS) in Agricultural Sciences students, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Design/methodology/approach: We accessed 77 students for Burnout Syndrome using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) on two occasions, the first in February and the second in October 2020. Sixty-three students completed both phases. The data were analyzed in a mixed factorial scheme (Three-way ANOVA; p < 0.05). Findings: Academic efficacy improved over time without interference of sex or physical activity frequency (p < 0.001). The emotional exhaustion domain significantly reduced over time in women who declared to practice physical activity (p = 0.037). A similar effect was observed in both men and women for the cynicism domain (p < 0.001). Online teaching strategies and the regular practice of exercise were associated to reduced levels of BS during the pandemic. Practical implications: The adoption of the emergency remote education system (ERE) associated with the practice of exercise can mitigate the harmful effects of the COVID-19 quarantine on the mental health of students. Theoretical implications: The ERE can be an effective strategy to mitigate BS levels in Agricultural Science students in the post-pandemic period. Originality/Value: This is the first study that presents results of BS in students of Agricultural Sciences, comparing before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reducing uncertainties in the response of tropical forests to global change requires understanding how intra- and interannual climatic variability selects for different species, community functional composition and ecosystem functioning, so that the response to climatic events of differing frequency and severity can be predicted. Here we present an extensive dataset of hydraulic traits of dominant species in two tropical Amazon forests with contrasting precipitation regimes - low seasonality forest (LSF) and high seasonality forest (HSF) - and relate them to community and ecosystem response to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) of 2015. Hydraulic traits indicated higher drought tolerance in the HSF than in the LSF. Despite more intense drought and lower plant water potentials in HSF during the 2015-ENSO, greater xylem embolism resistance maintained similar hydraulic safety margin as in LSF. This likely explains how ecosystem-scale whole-forest canopy conductance at HSF maintained a similar response to atmospheric drought as at LSF, despite their water transport systems operating at different water potentials. Our results indicate that contrasting precipitation regimes (at seasonal and interannual time scales) select for assemblies of hydraulic traits and taxa at the community level, which may have a significant role in modulating forest drought response at ecosystem scales.

The relationship between rooting depth and above‐ground hydraulic traits can potentially define drought resistance strategies that are important in determining species distribution and coexistence in seasonal tropical forests, and understanding this is important for predicting the effects of future climate change in these ecosystems. We assessed the rooting depth of 12 dominant tree species (representing c. 42% of the forest basal area) in a seasonal Amazon forest using the stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) of water collected from tree xylem and soils from a range of depths. We took advantage of a major ENSO‐related drought in 2015/2016 that caused substantial evaporative isotope enrichment in the soil and revealed water use strategies of each species under extreme conditions. We measured the minimum dry season leaf water potential both in a normal year (2014; Ψₙₒₙ‐ENSO) and in an extreme drought year (2015; ΨENSO). Furthermore, we measured xylem hydraulic traits that indicate water potential thresholds trees tolerate without risking hydraulic failure (P₅₀ and P₈₈). We demonstrate that coexisting trees are largely segregated along a single hydrological niche axis defined by root depth differences, access to light and tolerance of low water potential. These differences in rooting depth were strongly related to tree size; diameter at breast height (DBH) explained 72% of the variation in the δ¹⁸Oₓyₗₑₘ. Additionally, δ¹⁸Oₓyₗₑₘ explained 49% of the variation in P₅₀ and 70% of P₈₈, with shallow‐rooted species more tolerant of low water potentials, while δ¹⁸O of xylem water explained 47% and 77% of the variation of minimum Ψₙₒₙ‐ENSO and ΨENSO. We propose a new formulation to estimate an effective functional rooting depth, i.e. the likely soil depth from which roots can sustain water uptake for physiological functions, using DBH as predictor of root depth at this site. Based on these estimates, we conclude that rooting depth varies systematically across the most abundant families, genera and species at the Tapajós forest, and that understorey species in particular are limited to shallow rooting depths. Our results support the theory of hydrological niche segregation and its underlying trade‐off related to drought resistance, which also affect the dominance structure of trees in this seasonal eastern Amazon forest. Synthesis. Our results support the theory of hydrological niche segregation and demonstrate its underlying trade‐off related to drought resistance (access to deep water vs. tolerance of very low water potentials). We found that the single hydrological axis defining water use traits was strongly related to tree size, and infer that periodic extreme droughts influence community composition and the dominance structure of trees in this seasonal eastern Amazon forest.

Understanding xylem embolism formation is challenging due to dynamic changes and multiphase interactions in conduits. Here, we hypothesise that embolism spread involves gas diffusion in xylem, and is affected by time. We measured hydraulic conductivity (Kh) in flow‐centrifuge experiments over 1 h at a given pressure and temperature for stem samples of three angiosperm species. Temporal changes in Kh at 5, 22, and 35°C, and at various pressures were compared to modelled gas concentration changes in a recently embolised vessel in the centre of a centrifuge sample. Temporal changes in Kh were logarithmic and species‐specific. Maximum relative increases of Kh between 6% and 40% happened at 22°C for low centrifugal speed (<3250 RPM), while maximum decreases between 41% and 61% occurred at higher speeds. These reductions in Kh were experimentally shown to be associated with a temporal increase of embolism at the centre of centrifuge samples, which was likely associated with gas concentration increases in recently embolized vessels. Although embolism is mostly pressure‐driven, our experimental and modelled data indicate that time, conduit characteristics, and temperature are involved due to their potential role in gas diffusion. Gas diffusion, however, does not seem to cover the entire process of embolism spread. Summary Statement: Based on flow‐centrifuge experiments and modelling, we found that embolism formation is not only driven by pressure, but also involves gas movement, which is affected by time, temperature, and vessel anatomy. Objectives: Periodontitis (PD) has the potential to induce systemic changes that affect both physical and behavioral aspects. These alterations may be associated with changes in both the inflammatory profile and the oxidative stress status of individuals with PD. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of PD on oxidative stress, as well as on behavioral parameters and cognitive impairment, in a preclinical model. Material and Methods: Twenty‐four male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to PD and sham groups. PD was induced by the ligature protocol for 14 days. Behavioral tests were initiated on the 9th day of the experiment to evaluate anxious behavior and cognition (learning and memory). After euthanasia, oxidative stress was evaluated in the gums, blood, hippocampus, and amygdala. Alveolar bone loss, bone microstructure, and elemental compositions of the mandibular bone were also assessed. Results: PD increased alveolar bone loss, reduced the calcium and phosphorus content in the mandibular bone, and increased anxiety‐like behavior and cognitive decline (p < 0.05). Furthermore, PD significantly affected the redox balance, as evidenced by increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the gingiva and hippocampus (p < 0.05). It also led to increased lipid peroxidation in the gingiva and erythrocytes (p < 0.05), decreased antioxidant defenses in erythrocytes (superoxide dismutase) and the hippocampus (catalase), and increased antioxidant activity (catalase) in the amygdala (p < 0.05). Conclusion: PD resulted in cognitive alterations, including impairments in spatial learning and memory, as well as increased anxious behavior, likely due to redox imbalance in rats. Background: Periodontal disease (PD) leads to the destruction of supportive tissues through an inflammatory response induced by biofilm accumulation. This low-grade systemic inflammation from PD increases the risk of comorbidities. Among potential therapeutic agents for PD, humic acids (HAs) are notable for their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of varying HA doses on PD progression in an experimental model. Methods: Fifty-four Wistar rats were assigned to six groups (n = 8 each): control, PD, PD + 40 mg/kg HA, PD + 80 mg/kg HA, PD + 160 mg/kg HA, and PD + 320 mg/kg HA. HA from vermicompost was administered daily by gavage for 28 days, with PD induced by ligature on day 14. Post-euthanasia, mandibular samples were analyzed histomorphometrically for bone loss and osteocyte density. Alveolar bone topography and elemental composition were examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Renal and hepatic tissues were assessed histopathologically. Data were analyzed with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's test. Results: HA-treated animals showed reduced epithelial attachment loss and alveolar bone loss, with improved bone quality parameters, such as reduced pore number and diameter and increased osteocyte density compared to the PD group. Renal lesions observed in PD animals were mitigated at 40 and 80 mg/kg HA doses. Conclusions: HA treatment improves alveolar bone integrity and, at lower doses, reduces PD-induced renal lesions.
