Genus Pectiniunguis Bollman, 1889 Pectiniunguis Bollman, 1889, by original designation. Type species. Pectiniunguis americanus Bollman, 1889: 212, by original designation. Number of species: 24. For a list of species currently contained in Pectiniunguis see Foddai et al. (2000), Pereira (2011), and ChiloBase 2.0 (Bonato et al. 2016). Diagnosis. This genus is distinguished from others in the family Schendylidae by the following combination of features. Second maxillae pleurites not fused to the posterior internal border of the coxosternite (not as in Ctenophilus Cook, 1896 in which the pleurites are fused). Apical claw of telopodites pectinate on both dorsal and ventral edges (not smooth as in Sogodes Chamberlin, 1921). Metasternites with pore-fields (not absent as in Nannopodellus Chamberlin, 1924). Telopodites of ultimate legs with six articles (not five as in Nannopodellus), and ultimate pretarsus a small hairy tubercle, replaced by a small spine, or altogether absent, in both males and females (not claw-like as in Nyctunguis Chamberlin, 1914). Female holotype: The following additional morphological details are provided regarding the antennae: Ventral and dorsal surface of a.a. II, V, IX and XIII with very small specialized sensilla. On the ventral side the sensilla are restricted to an internal latero-apical area, represented by two different types (a and b). Type a sensilla very thin and not split apically, type b sensilla very similar to those of the apex of a.a. XIV but thicker, with two diminutive apical branches slightly more evident than those of the latter. Specialized sensilla on dorsal side restricted to external latero-apical area and represented by three different types: a and b similar to a and b of ventral side; and type c sensilla, similar to type b; but thicker, not divided apically and darker (ocherous in color). Number and distribution of type a, b, and c sensilla as in Table 3. Remarks. The original description by Pereira et al. (1994), only mentions two types of specialized sensilla (hereby individualized as “ type b ” and “ type c ”). The original source of this nomenclature is Pereira et al. (1995). Distribution. This species inhabiting the Yungas rainforests of northwestern Argentina (Yungas biogeographic province), is currently known from only two specimens, both collected in the montane forest altitudinal level: male holotype, with 49 leg-bearing segments, body length 19 mm (from Jujuy province: Ledesma department: ca. 50 km W of Fraile Pintado, ca. 900 m a.s.l.), and a female specimen with 53 leg-bearing segments, body length 24 mm (from Jujuy province: Ledesma department: Parque Nacional Calilegua, entry area, ca. 605 m a.s.l.). The present new specimen, as the latter, comes from Parque Nacional Calilegua, but it was collected in a different area of the park, at ca. 1700 m a.s.l. (montane cloud forest altitudinal level). Plateurytion roigi sp. nov. (Figs. 1���50) Diagnosis. A species of Plateurytion characterized by having the following features: coxosternite of first maxillae without lappets; sclerotized rim of coxosternites of second maxillae not elongated; ventral pore-fields present in an uninterrupted series all along the trunk; all coxal organs distinct and open separately; dorsal side of coxopleura of the ultimate leg-bearing segment devoid of coxal pores. Of the other South American species currently included in the genus, only the present new species and P. gracilis (Gervais, 1849) share all these combined characters. Plateurytion roigi can be confidently differentiated from P. gracilis by means of the following selected traits (the corresponding ones in the latter are given in parentheses): body length of female 18 mm (40 mm); female with 43 leg-bearing segments (with 67 leg-bearing segments); undivided pore-fields of anterior region of the body extended up to ca. metasternite 11 (up to ca. metasternite 25); coxal pores dispersed on ventral and lateral surfaces of coxopleuron, Figs. 46, 47 (restricted along the membrane between coxopleuron and metasternite); anal organs present, Figs. 46: c, 50: b (absent). Remarks. Other morphological traits included in Table 1 differentiate P. ro i gi sp. nov. from P. gracilis. Type material examined. CHILE: Region X (de Los Lagos region): Palena province: Chait��n: El Amarillo, December 12, 1986, S. A. Roig-Ju��ent coll.: holotype ♀ with 43 leg-bearing segments, body length 18 mm, in ethanol, head detached from trunk (MLP-Ar 19441). Depository of type. MLP-Ar. Description. Female holotype (adult). General features. Forty three leg-bearing segments, body length 18 mm, maximum body width 0.70 mm, maximum width of cephalic plate 0.54 mm, length of cephalic plate 0.72 mm, maximum width of forcipular coxosternite 0.70 mm. Colour (of preserved specimen in ethanol): forcipular segment bright ferrugineous, rest of the body pale orange-brownish. Antennae. About 2.90 times as long as the cephalic plate, ratio of width of a.a. II/width of a.a. XIV 1.55: 1. A.a. I nearly as long as wide, remaining a.a. longer than wide. Length/width ratio of a.a. XIV 2.05: 1. Ventral chaetotaxy: setae on a.a. I-VII of various lengths and relatively few in number, those on a.a. VIII-XIV progressively shorter and more numerous towards the tip of the appendage (Fig. 1). Dorsal chaetotaxy: setae slightly shorter and less numerous than on ventral side. A.a. XIV with 13 claviform sensilla on the external margin and 12 on the internal margin (Fig. 2: a); distal end of this a.a. with ca. 5 ��� 6 very small hyaline specialized sensilla not split apically (Fig. 2: b). Ventral and dorsal surface of a.a. II, V, IX and XIII with very small specialized sensilla. Ventrally, sensilla restricted to a middle and apical latero-internal area (Figs. 3���6), and represented by two different types: a and b. Type a sensilla very thin, not split apically (Fig. 5: a); type b sensilla (Fig. 5: b) thicker and very similar to those of the apex of a.a. XIV. Specialized sensilla on dorsal side restricted to a middle and apical latero-external area (Figs. 7 ��� 10) and represented by two different types: a similar to a of ventral side, but proportionally much shorter (Fig. 10: a), and b similar to b of ventral side (Fig. 10: b). Cephalic plate. Distinctly longer than wide (length/width ratio ca. 1.30: 1), without a distinct frontal sulcus. Anterior margin very slightly concave at middle; lateral margins slightly convex; posterior margin slightly concave; anterior and posterior sides, curved. Shape and chaetotaxy as in Fig. 11. Clypeus. Four setae located on the clypeal area; posteriorly accompanied by 1 + 1 setae at either side (Fig. 12). Clypeal area with surface minutely punctate or granulate not areolate (Figs. 12: a, 13). Labrum. Mid-piece slightly pigmented, well-developed with 10 short distinct teeth. Side-pieces with ca. 13 + 16 hyaline filaments (Fig. 14). Mandible. Pectinate lamella with ca. 14 hyaline teeth. First maxillae. Coxosternite without lappets, telopodites with small lappets (Fig. 15: a). Coxosternite devoid of setae; coxal projections subtriangular, well-developed, round tipped and provided with 2 + 2 large setae and 4 + 4 small setae (Fig. 16). Apical article of telopodites with 2 + 3 setae on ventral side (Fig. 16). Second maxillae. Coxosternites medially joined through a narrow, hyaline and non-areolate membranous isthmus only, and with 8 + 8 setae near the internal margins (Fig. 16). Antero-internal corners of coxosternites without processes (Fig. 16). Metameric pores accompanied by a sclerotized, not elongated rim (Figs. 16: c, 17: b). Articles of telopodites without distoectal processes; apical claw well-developed, a little shorter than the third article, shape as in Figs. 16, 18. Chaetotaxy of coxosternite and telopodites as in Fig. 16. Forcipular segment. Telopodites, when extended, almost attaining the end of a.a. II (Fig. 11). Forcipular tergite trapeziform, anterior and posterior margins respectively covered by the cephalic plate and the tergite of the first leg-bearing segment; chaetotaxy represented by ca. 14 large and short setae distributed as in Fig. 11. Coxosternite without chitin-lines, middle part of anterior margin slightly notched and concave, provided with 1 + 1 slightly pigmented denticles bearing 1 + 0 dorsal small setae, aspect and relative size as in Figs. 19, 21. Telopodites: medial edge of trochanteroprefemur with two teeth, both deeply pigmented, relative size and shape as in Figs. 19 ��� 21; ratio width of trochanteroprefemur at level of distal basal part of apical tooth/width of trochanteroprefemur at level of distal basal part of proximal tooth ca. 0.87: 1. Femur and tibia without denticles. Tarsungulum basally with a welldeveloped, round tipped and deeply pigmented subtriangular tooth (Figs. 19, 21); ventral and dorsal medial edges of forcipular tarsungulum not serrate, ventral edge very slightly crenulate (Figs. 19, 21). Relative size of poison glands as in Figs. 21, 22: a; calyx of poison gland subtriangular in shape (Figs. 21, 22: b, 23: a). Chaetotaxy of coxosternite and telopodites as in Fig. 19. Metasternites of leg-bearing segments 1 to penultimate. Pore-fields present in an uninterrupted series from metasternite 2 to penultimate inclusive, fields undivided on metasternites 2 ��� 11, uncompletely divided on metasternite 12 (Fig. 30), divided in two subsymmetrical areas on metasternites 13 ��� 42. Shape and relative size of pore-fields changing along the trunk as in Figs. 24���36. Claws with two thin and pale accessory spines ventrobasally, one anterior (Figs. 42���44: a) and one posterior, shorter (Figs. 42 ��� 44: b). Ultimate leg-bearing segment. Intercalary pleurites absent at both sides of the ultimate pretergite; ultimate presternite not divided along the sagittal plane; length/width ratio of metatergite 0.86: 1; length/width ratio of metasternite 0.76: 1. Shape and chaetotaxy of metatergite and metasternite as in Figs. 45, 46. Coxopleura slightly protruding at distal-internal ventral ends, setae small and numerous distributed on the internal ventral area, the remaining coxopleural surface with few small and larger setae (Figs. 45, 46). Coxopleura with 9 + 10 single (���homogeneous��� sensu Br��lemann & Ribaut 1912) coxal organs, opening independently; a few coxal pores placed near the membrane between coxopleuron and metasternite, partially covered by the latter, remaining ones dispersed on ventral and lateral surfaces (Figs. 46, 47), dorsal side of coxopleura devoid of coxal pores (Fig. 45); internal cuticular structure of coxal organs as in Fig. 47 (a: mucous layer, b: contour of lobe). Telopodites of ultimate legs with six articles, shape and chaetotaxy as in Figs. 45, 46. Length of telopodites of ultimate legs/length of metasternite ca. 4.21: 1. Ultimate pretarsus unguiform, bearing a single internal spine ventrobasally (Figs. 48, 49: a). Postpedal segments. Intermediate tergite with posterior margin strongly convex, bearing numerous small and large setae (Fig. 45); intermediate sternite seemingly covered by the metasternite of the ultimate leg-bearing segment; posterior margin of first genital sternite slightly concave (Fig. 46). Gonopods uniarticulate not separated on the middle line (Figs. 46: b, 50: a). Anal organs present (Figs. 46: c, 50: b). Male. Unknown. Etymology. The new species is respectfully dedicated to the collector of the type specimen Dr. Sergio Alberto Roig-Ju��ent, researcher of the CONICET, working at the Instituto Argentino de Investigaciones de las Zonas Aridas (IADIZA), Mendoza, Argentina. Ecology. The holotype was collected in the soil, at about 800 m a.s.l., in a temperate rain forest environment, the Valdivian forest, which occurs on the west coast of southern South America, lying mostly in Chile extending into small parts of Argentina, from roughly 37�� to 48�� south latitude. Schendylops grismadoi sp. nov. (Figs. 1���59) Diagnosis. A Neotropical species of Schendylops with pore-field area on first sternite; pore-fields present in an uninterrupted series all along the body; pore-fields undivided on anterior and posterior sternites, divided in two subsymmetrical areas on intermediate sternites; posterior limit of ventral pore-field series on penultimate sternite. The other Neotropical members of the genus sharing these combined traits are S. tropicus (Br��lemann & Ribaut, 1911), S. inquilinus Pereira, Uliana & Minelli, 2007, S. coscaroni (Pereira & Minelli, 1996), S. demelloi (Verhoeff, 1938), and S. parahybae (Chamberlin, 1914). S. grismadoi sp. nov. differs from the latter taxa by having the following unique traits: anterior margin of cephalic plate conspicuously notched in the middle (Fig. 10); dentate lamellae of mandibles divided in two blocks (Figs. 13���15); basal internal edge of forcipular tarsungulum with a small pigmented tooth (Figs. 21���23). Other morphological traits included in Table 2 differentiate S. grismadoi sp. nov. from the other five abovementioned species. Remarks. For details on features differentiating S. grismadoi sp. nov. from some other Neotropical species of Schendylops, see comments on morphological similarities below, and Table 3. The new species can be separated from the Neotropical members of Schendylops having sternal pore-fields all along the body, by using the identification key below. Type material examined. Colour (of preserved specimen in alcohol): head, forcipular segment and legbearing segments 1���7 (- 8) bright ferrugineous, rest of the body pale orange-brownish. Antennae. About 3.1 times as long as the cephalic plate, distally attenuate, ratio of width of a.a. I/width of a.a. XIV ca. 2.29: 1, width of a.a. II/width of a.a. XIV ca. 1.75: 1. A.a. I nearly as long as wide, all remaining a.a. longer than wide. Ventral chaetotaxy: setae on a.a. I���IV of various lengths and relatively few in number; those of a.a. V���XIV progressively shorter and more numerous towards the tip of the appendage (Fig. 1). Dorsal chaetotaxy: setae on a.a. I���IV similar to the ventral side, setae on remaining a.a. a little longer and slightly less numerous. A.a. XIV with ca. 16 claviform sensilla on the external margin and ca. 6 on the internal margin (Fig. 2: c); distal end of this a.a. with ca. 5 small hyaline specialized sensilla ending in three small apical branches (Fig. 2: d). Ventral and dorsal surface of a.a. II (Figs. 3, 6), V (Figs. 4, 7), IX (Figs. 5, 8) and XIII (Figs. 2, 9) with very small specialized sensilla placed on hyaline, unreticulated, unpigmented areas. On the ventral side these sensilla are placed on the middle and internal latero-apical area and are represented by two different types (a and b). Dentate lamellae subdivided into two distinct blocks, with 5, 6 teeth in the right mandible (Fig. 15) and 3, 8 in the left (Figs. 13, 14), pectinate lamella with ca. 21 hyaline teeth. First maxillae. Coxosternite and telopodites with well developed lappets (Fig. 16). Coxosternite with 2 + 2 setae; coxal projections subtriangular, round tipped and provided with 1 + 1 large setae and 0+ 1 small setae (Fig. 17). Article 2 of telopodites with 3 + 3 ventral setae (Fig. 17) and 5 + 5 dorsal sensilla (Fig. 16). Second maxillae. Coxosternite bearing 11 + 10 setae with relative size and arrangement as in Fig. 17. Forcipular segment. When closed the telopodites do not reach the anterior margin of the head. The species is respectfully dedicated to one of the collectors of the type specimen described herein, the distinguished arachnologist Cristian Jos�� Grismado of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales ���Bernardino Rivadavia��� (CONICET), Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ecology. The holotype specimen was collected in leaf litter in a subhumid tropical forest environment, in a selective logging area (���La Chonta��� forestry concession), at about 300 m a.s.l., east-central Bolivia (Amazon basin). In the differential diagnosis above, the new species has been compared in detail with the other Neotropical species characterized by having an uninterrupted series of ventral pore-fields, extending from first to penultimate sternite (undivided on anterior and posterior sternites, divided in two subsymmetrical areas on the intermediate). The Neotropical members with pore-field series, ending instead on the antepenultimate sternite (but sharing all remaining mentioned traits) are S. amazonicus (Pereira, Minelli & Barbieri, 1994), S. borellii (Silvestri, 1895), S. iguapensis (Verhoeff, 1938), S. longitarsis (Silvestri, 1895), S. marchantariae (Pereira, Minelli & Barbieri, 1995), and S. mesopotamicus (Pereira, 1981). S. grismadoi can be differentiated from the latter by means of the following unique features: anterior margin of cephalic plate conspicuously notched in the middle (Fig. 10); basal internal edge of forcipular tarsungulum with a small pigmented tooth (Figs. 21���23). Genus Schendylops Cook, 1899 Diagnosis. This taxon can be distinguished from all other genera currently recognized in the family Schendylidae by the following unique combination of features. Second maxillae: pleurites not fused to the posterior internal border of the coxosternite; apical claw of telopodites of second maxillae pectinate on both dorsal and ventral edges. Sternites of leg-bearing segments with pore-fields. Ultimate leg-bearing segment: ultimate legs with seven articles; pretarsus in form of a small hairy tubercle or replaced by a small spine or altogether absent; each coxopleuron with two internal coxal organs of simple structure (���homogeneous coxal glands��� sensu Br��lemann & Ribaut 1912). Schendylops grismadoi sp. nov., a new schendylid centipede (Chilopoda: Geophilomorpha) from the Amazon forest of east-central Bolivia (Santa Cruz Department, Guarayos Province) is described and illustrated based on the holotype fe-male. The new species is characterized by having an uninterrupted series of ventral pore-fields, from first to penultimate sternite inclusive (undivided on anterior and posterior sternites, divided in two subsymmetrical areas on the intermediate); these combined traits being shared by five other Neotropical species currently included in the genus Schendylops Cook, 1899, i.e., S. tropicus (Brölemann & Ribaut, 1911) (from French Guiana), S. inquilinus Pereira, Uliana & Minelli, 2007 (from Brazil), S. coscaroni (Pereira & Minelli, 2006) (from Brazil), S. demelloi (Verhoeff, 1938) (from Brazil), and S. parahybae (Chamberlin, 1914) (from Brazil). The new taxon is differentiated from all aforementioned species by having the anterior margin of cephalic plate conspicuously notched in the middle, dentate lamellae of mandibles divided in two blocks, and basal internal edge of forcipular tarsungulum with a small pigmented tooth; it is included in a key which will enable the identification of all known Neotropical members having sternal pore-fields all along the trunk (including those with an interrupted series on some mid-body sternites). Plateurytion mundus can be confidently differentiated from P. zapallar by means of the following selected traits (the corresponding ones in the latter are given in parentheses): body length of female 35���45 mm (28 mm, female; 27 mm, male); female with 49, 51 leg-bearing segments (female with 47, 49, probably 51, 53; male with 47, 49, 51); dorsal side of a.a. XIII with ca. 14 type b and ca. 6 type c specialized sensilla, Fig. 4 (with ca. 3 type b and ca. 1 type c, Fig. 59); teeth of labrum midpiece short, slightly sharp-pointed, Fig. 8 (similar to the long filaments of the side-pieces, but thinner and smaller, Figs. 63, 64); second article of telopodite of first maxillae with ca. 12���13 setae (with ca. 4���7); ventral pore-fields undivided on metasternite 1, divided in two areas on metasternites 2 to penultimate, Figs. 15���29, 45��� 51 (undivided on metasternites 1 to ca. 15, divided in two areas on remaining metasternites including penultimate, Figs. 73���85); with ca. 20���25 organs in each cluster of coxal organs in the coxopleura of the ultimate leg-bearing segment, Fig. 39 (with ca. 8���11 organs in each cluster, Figs. 96, 104). Other morphological traits included in Table 1 differentiate P. mundus from P. zapallar. Remarks. P. mundus can be separated from the other South American members of Plateurytion using the identification key below. Type material examined. CHILE: 35 km E of Temuco, winter of 1951, M. G. Smith col., three syntypes here designated as lectotype ♀ with 49 l. -b.s., b.l. 45 mm (head capsule, dissected mouth parts, leg-bearing segments 44���49, and postpedal segments in an original permanent slide; forcipular segment, and leg-bearing segments 1���43 in alcohol); paralectotype A ♀ with 51 l. -b.s., b.l. 35 mm (in alcohol); paralectotype B ♀ with 51 l. -b.s., b.l. 37 mm (in alcohol). All specimens labeled as Chilerium mundum Chamberlin (CAS Entomology type No. 9173). Remarks. Chamberlin (1955) stated that the syntypical series comprised four specimens, but actually comprises three (apparently one of these is now missing). Left forcipular telopodite, pretarsus of left ultimate leg, and last three apical articles of right ultimate leg, missing in lectotype ♀. Depository of types. CAS. Redescription. Female lectotype. Forty nine leg-bearing segments, body length 45 mm, maximum body width 1.9 mm. Maximum width of cephalic plate 1.08 mm, length of cephalic plate 1.74 mm, maximum width of forcipular coxosternite 1.70 mm. Color (of preserved specimen): head and forcipular segment light chestnut, rest of the body yellowish light orange. Antennae. About 2.95 times as long as the cephalic plate, distally attenuate (Fig. 1). Ratio of width of a.a. II/ width of a.a. XIV ca. 2.08: 1, all a.a. longer than wide. Ventral chaetotaxy: setae on a.a. I���VI (VII) of various lengths and relatively few in number; those of remaining a.a. progressively shorter and more numerous towards the tip of the appendage (Fig. 1). Dorsal chaetotaxy: setae on a.a. I���VI (VII) similar to the ventral side, setae on remaining a.a. a little longer and slightly less numerous. A.a. XIV with ca. 29 claviform sensilla on the external margin and ca. 16 on the internal margin (Fig. 2: a); distal end of this a.a. with ca. 5���6 very small hyaline specialized sensilla, having about half the length of the claviform sensilla and not split apically (Fig. 2: b). Ventral and dorsal surface of a.a. II, V, IX and XIII (Figs. 3, 4) with very small specialized sensilla. On the ventral side these sensilla are restricted to an internal latero-apical area and are represented by two different types (a and b). Type a sensilla very thin and not split apically (Fig. 3: a), type b sensilla (Fig. 3: b) very similar to those of the apex of a.a. XIV. Specialized sensilla on dorsal side restricted to an external latero-apical area and are represented by three different types: a and b respectively similar to a and b of ventral side (Fig. 4: a, b) and type c sensilla, similar to type b, but a little bigger and darker (ochreous in color) (Fig. 4: c). Shape and chaetotaxy as in Fig. 5. Clypeus. With one central seta in front of the clypeal area, one seta located on it (Fig. 7), and posterior to the latter 3 + 2 setae distributed at both sides of the middle line (Fig. 6). Clypeal area well developed with surface minutely punctuate or granulate, not areolate (Fig. 7). Labrum. Mid-piece unpigmented, small, with ca. 8 short slightly sharp pointed teeth; side-pieces with 21 + 20 hyaline filaments of variable sizes (Fig. 8). Mandible. With shape as in Fig. 9, pectinate lamella with ca. 31 hyaline teeth. First maxillae. With well developed lappets on coxosternite and telopodites, relative size as in Figs. 10, 11. Coxosternite devoid of setae; coxal projections subtriangular, round tipped and provided with 11 + 8 setae (Fig. 10). Apical article of telopodites with 12 + 13 setae on ventral side (Fig. 10), and 2 + 2 small sensilla on dorsal side. Second maxillae. Coxosternites medially joined through a narrow, hyaline and non-areolate membranous isthmus only (Fig. 10), provided with 12 + 12 setae distributed as in Fig. 10. Metameric pores accompanied by a sclerotized rim (Fig. 10: c; Fig. 12: a). Apical claw of telopodites well developed (Figs. 10, 13, 14). Chaetotaxy of coxosternites and telopodites as in Figs. 10, 13. Forcipular segment (similar to paralectotype A female). When extended the telopodites attaining the end of the a.a. II (Fig. 40). Forcipular tergite trapeziform, with anterior and posterior margins respectively covered by the cephalic plate and the tergite of the first leg-bearing segment (Fig. 41: a); chaetotaxy represented by 16 + 19 setae with relative size and distribution as sin Fig. 41. Coxosternite without chitin-lines, middle part of anterior border slightly concave, provided with 1 + 1 slightly pigmented denticles bearing one dorsal seta; aspect and relative size as in Figs. 40, 42. Telopodites: medial edge of trochanteroprefemur with two teeth, both deeply pigmented, the proximal one smaller than the distal (Figs. 40, 42). Femur and tibia without denticles. Tarsungulum basally with a well developed and deeply pigmented subtriangular tooth (Figs. 40, 43); medial edge of tarsungulum not serrate (Figs. 40, 43). Gonopods uniarticulate, relatively small, not separated on the middle line (Fig. 38). Anal organs absent. Male. Unknown. Variation. Disposition of ventral pores in lectotype female and paralectotype A female reveals the following intraspecific variation (traits in the latter are given in parentheses): Metasternite of first leg-bearing segment with a single pore, Fig. 15 (with a group of three pores, Fig. 45); most of pore-fields on metasternites 2 to penultimate divided in two subsymmetrical areas, Figs. 16, 18, 19, 22���29, and a few divided in two asymmetrical areas, Figs. 17, 20, 21 (all divided in two subsymmetrical areas, Figs. 46���51); a few metasternites bearing an additional small group of pores located on their left or right posterior sides, Figs. 18, 19, 24, 26 (all metasternites devoid of additional groups of pores, Figs. 45���51). (Shape of divided pore-fields of paralectotype B female similar as to paralectotype A female). All other characters without significant variation. Remarks. Plateurytion mundus was inadequately described by Chamberlin. The original description does not refer to a specimen in particular, nor does it specify the sex of the studied specimens. It only includes three not accurate drawings (cephalic plate; first maxillae; coxopleura and metasternite of ultimate leg-bearing segment showing coxal organs); and completely lacks information on pilosity of the antennae; kind and number of specialized sensilla of a.a. II, V, IX and XIII; shape of mandibles; anterior and posterior limits of ventral pore-field series; shape and relative size of pore-fields; shape of postpedal segments; etc. In his original description Chamberlin states ���coxae of second maxillae broadly and completely united at middle���, but the coxosternites are medially joined through a narrow, hyaline and non-areolate membranous isthmus only (Fig. 10). About the labrum, the author says ���median piece small, transversally subelliptic, without teeth on caudal margin���, but ca. 8 distinct short teeth are present. The adult (and mated) condition of the three female type specimens is indicated by the presence of spermatozoa in both spermathecae, located at level of the antepenultimate leg-bearing segment. In the preceding redescription, the forcipular segment is described after the paralectotype A female, because in the lectotype the left forcipular telopodite is missing. Both ultimate legs are incomplete in the lectotype, therefore an ultimate leg of the paralectotype A is illustrated including a detail of the claw-like ultimate pretarsus. Type locality. CHILE: Region IX (Araucan��a region): Caut��n province: 35 km E of Temuco. Known range. Only known from the type locality. (See Fig. 110). Remarks. Plateurytion zapallar (Chamberlin, 1955) (Figs. 54���109) Chilerium zapallar Chamberlin, 1955: 24, 25. Eurytion zapallar: Foddai, Pereira & Minelli, 2000: 75, 185. Eurytion zapallar: Pereira, 2006: 167 (in key). Plateurytion zapallar: Bonato, Pereira & Minelli, 2007: 6; Pereira, 2008: 56. Diagnosis. A species of Plateurytion characterized by having one cluster of coxal organs in each coxopleuron of the ultimate leg-bearing segment. Of the other South American species currently included in the genus, only the present species and P. mundus (Chamberlin, 1955) share the same character. Plateurytion zapallar can be confidently differentiated from P. mundus by means of the characters used in the preceding diagnosis of the latter. Other morphological traits included in Table 1 differentiate P. zapallar from P. mundus. Remarks. P. zapallar can be separated from the other South American members of Plateurytion using the identification key below. Type material examined. Chamberlin (1955) stated that the syntypical series comprised three specimens (all with 49 legbearing segments), but actually comprises two (apparently one of these is now missing); the author gives 28 mm as body length for the species, because the trunk of the lectotype is incomplete, it is not possible to determine if this length corresponds to it (or to the presumptive missing specimen of unknown sex). All other characters without significant variation. Remarks. An accurate comparison of the characters of specific value in the lectotype male (Figs. 99���104) and paralectotype female (Figs. 105���107), with those of the specimens cited in "Other material examined" (Figs. 54 ��� 98, 108, 109) leave no doubts as to the conspecificity of all of them. The precedent redescription of P. zapallar is based on the non-type specimens, because the lectotype male is incomplete and the paralectotype female shows a sub-adult condition, indicated by the relatively small body size, empty spermathecae (located at level of the penultimate leg-bearing segment), low number of organs in each cluster of coxal organs and reduced pilosity on the articles of ultimate legs. Plateurytion zapallar was inadequately described by Chamberlin; his original description does not refer to a specimen in particular, nor does it specify the sex of the studied specimens. It only includes a single inaccurate figure of the cephalic plate, and completely lacks information on pilosity of the antennae; kind and number of specialized sensilla of a.a. II, V, IX and XIII; shape of mandibles; anterior and posterior limits of ventral porefields; shape of postpedal segments; etc. In his description Chamberlin states "First joint of telopodite of first maxillae bearing a sensory lappet, the syncoxite with none", but the coxosternite of the first maxillae actually bears lappets (Figs. 99���101: a). About the ventral pores, the author says "Ventral pores present in a circular area in front of caudal margin of sternite", this is correct for the metasternites of the anterior region of the body, but in those of the posterior region, the pore-fields are divided in two subsymmetrical areas. Two poorly known species of geophilid centipedes from the Andes of South-Central Chile, i.e., Plateurytion mundus (Chamberlin, 1955) and Plateurytion zapallar (Chamberlin, 1955) (Myriapoda: Chilopoda: Geophilomorpha), are herein redescribed and illustrated after type specimens of both taxa and new material of the latter, rectifying the condition of the coxosternites of the second maxillae, which are medially joined through a narrow, hyaline and non-areolate membranous isthmus only (instead of "broadly fused as in Pachymerium", as stated by Chamberlin), this being consistent with the current generic assignment of these species under Plateurytion Attems, 1909. New data on many morphological features of specific value, until now unknown, are also given for both taxa. Plateurytion zapallar is reported for the first time from Coquimbo region, 11 Km N of Los Vilos (Elqui province), Valparaíso region, Quebrada Huaquén, Pichicuy (Petorca province), La Campana National Park (Quillota province), and Quebrada el Tigre, Cachagua (Valparíso province). The centipedes of the clade Epimorpha change slightly during post-embryonic growth but there is huge variation between species in the maximum body size. New specimens of the rarely collected Neotropical genus Dinogeophilus provide further evidence that this genus comprises the smallest species of the Epimorpha, with a recorded maximum length of 5.5 mm. Up to now Dinogeophilus has been invariantly classified in Geophilidae but different sources of evidence (examination by SEM, cladistic evaluation of morphology, similarity and phylogenetic analysis of molecular data) agree on a very different phylogenetic hypothesis: Dinogeophilus is actually a derived lineage of Schendylidae, only distantly related to Geophilidae, and possibly belong to a mainly Neotropical subgroup of schendylids. A comparison of Dinogeophilus with the most closely related taxa suggests that body miniaturization was accompanied by possibly paedomorphic traits, including lower number of some multiple elements (antennal sensilla, processes on the mouth-parts, coxal organs) and shorter setae. Among the Neotropical species currently assigned to the genus, only the present new taxon, R. combinata Pereira, Uliana & Minelli, 2006 (from Peru), R. jakulicai Pereira, 2007 (from Argentina) and R. lewisi Pereira, 2013 (from Argentina) share these two combined traits. Ribautia paranaensis sp. nov. a new miniature species of geophilid centipede from the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest (the westernmost of the fifteen ecoregions comprising the Atlantic Forest biome sensu Di Bitetti et al. 2003), is herein described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by having the coxal organs grouped in clusters (one of these in each coxopleuron of the ultimate leg-bearing segment) and a claw-like pretarsus in the ultimate legs; these traits being shared by three other Neotropical members of the genus, i.e., R. combinata Pereira, Uliana & Minelli, 2006 (from the Amazonian rainforest of Peru), R. jakulicai Pereira, 2007 (from the Yungas rainforest of Northwestern Argentina), and R. lewisi Pereira, 2013 (collected in a gallery forest in the Mesopotamian region, Northeastern Argentina). R. paranaensis sp. nov. represents the first report of Ribautia Brölemann, 1909 in the entire Atlantic Forest biome, and the third confirmed record of the taxon from Argentina. Diagnosis. A Neotropical species of Ityphilus with internal edge of the forcipular tarsungulum completely smooth. The other Neotropical members of the genus sharing the same trait are I. cavernicolus (Matic, Negrea & Fundora Martinez, 1977) (from Cuba); I. idanus Crabill, 1960 (from Antigua and Barbuda); I. lilacinus Cook, 1899 (from South Bimini Island: Bahamas: British West Indies; Sugarloaf Key: Florida: USA); I. palidus (Matic, Negrea & Fundora Martinez, 1977) (from Cuba); and I. polypus (Matic, Negrea & Fundora Martinez, 1977) (from Cuba). Ityphilus calinus can be differentiated from all these taxa by the low number of leg-bearing segments, 43 (against 49 to 93 in the others). Among them, those having a range of leg-bearing segments roughly similar to I. calinus are I. cavernicolus and I. idanus. Ityphilus calinus can be confidently differentiated from I. cavernicolus by means of the following selected traits (the corresponding traits in the latter are given in parentheses): body length of male 19 mm (50 mm (female?)); male with 43 leg-bearing segments (49, 51, 53, 55, 57, 59, ���frequently 51���53 ��� (sex not specified for each number)); antennae moderately clavate, not truly geniculate (strongly clavate and geniculate); a.a. XIV longer than wide (wider than long); cephalic plate ca. as long as wide (wider than long); telopodites of first maxillae with lappets (without lappets); forcipular coxosternum with complete, strongly developed chitin-lines, Fig. 21: a (���very fine and difficult to observe���); ventral pore-fields circular in shape (transversally subrectangular); tergites smooth (roughened). Ityphilus calinus can be confidently differentiated from I. idanus by means of the following selected traits (the corresponding traits in the latter are given in parentheses): male with 43 leg-bearing segments (male with 55, female with 59); dorsal side of a.a. IX and XIII with ca. 9 spine-like deeply pigmented specialized sensilla (ca. 2); clypeus with 2 + 2 postantennal setae (1 + 1); mid-piece of labrum smooth (with a fringe of minute hair-like structures); first maxillary telopodite lappets present (absent); labrum side-pieces with 3 + 3 teeth (1-2 + 1-2); shape of calyx of poison gland cylindrical, Fig. 23 (like a bunch of grapes, Fig. 118: a); sternite of ultimate leg-bearing segment with ratio of width of anterior border/width of posterior border, ca. 2.47: 1 (ca. 1.58: 1). Remarks. Morphological traits included in Table 1 differentiate I. calinus from all the other Neotropical species of Ityphilus with internal edge of forcipular tarsungulum smooth. Ityphilus calinus can be confidently separated from I. savannus and I. ceibanus (of which it is unknown whether the forcipular tarsungulum is serrate or smooth) by means of the following selected traits (corresponding features for I. calinus already mentioned above). I. savannus: terminal portion of the antennae greatly thickened; male with 55 leg-bearing segments. I. ceibanus: antennae strongly clavate and geniculate; head longer than wide; more than 69 leg-bearing segments (sex unknown). Type material examined. Depository of type. CAS. Remarks. The holotype is on a permanent original slide made in glycerin gelatin water-based mounting medium. The entire specimen is in dorsal position, head not separated from the body (mouth parts not dissected), trunk undivided. Head, forcipular segment, and leg-bearing segments 1 to 35 under the cover slip (very well cleared and preserved); leg-bearing segments 36 to 43 and postpedal segments not covered and included in overflowed mounting medium only (therefore the preservation is not adequate for microscopic observation). Description. Male holotype. Forty-three leg-bearing segments, body length about 19 mm. Trunk attenuate in anterior and posterior regions, with exception of the ultimate leg-bearing segment which is ca. 1.25 times as wide as the penultimate. Width of selected leg-bearing segments as follows: 1 (0.50 mm); 2 (0.47 mm); 3 (0.47 mm); 6 (0.54 mm); 12 (0.62 mm); 18 (0.75 mm); 22 (0.80 mm); 27 (0.87 mm); 32 (0.65 mm); 39 (0.61 mm); 42 (0.43 mm); 43 (0.54 mm). Width of cephalic plate 0.45 mm. Width of forcipular coxosternite 0.50 mm. Ground color (of preserved specimen in permanent slide) ocher. Antennae. Relatively short, ca. 1.64 times as long as the cephalic plate, curved at middle, not truly geniculate, apically slightly thickened, moderately clavate (Figs. 1, 2). Basal a.a. not overlapping medially (Figs. 12, 13, 24). Ratio of width of a.a. XII (= widest a.a. of distal antennal half) / width of a.a. III (= narrowest a.a. of basal antennal half) ca. 1.34: 1. A.a. XIV of same length as the three previous a.a. taken together. Length / width ratio of right a.a. Ventral chaetotaxy: setae on a.a. I to IX of various lengths, and relatively few in number, those of a.a. X to XIV much shorter and very numerous (Fig. 1). Dorsal chaetotaxy: setae on a.a. I to IX similar to those on ventral side, setae on a.a. XI to XIV much longer and less numerous than those on ventral side (Fig. 2). A.a. XIV with ca. 18 claviform sensilla on the external border and ca. 13 on the internal border (Fig. 3: a); distal end of this a.a. with ca. 6 very small hyaline specialized sensilla apparently not split apically (Fig. 3: b). Ventral and dorsal surface of a.a. II, V, IX, and XIII with very small specialized sensilla. Ventrally, sensilla restricted to an apical latero-internal area (Figs. 4���7), represented by two different types: a and b. Type a sensilla very thin and not split apically (Fig. 7: a); type b sensilla (Fig. 7: b) very similar to those on the apex of a.a. XIV. Specialized sensilla on dorsal side distributed on apical half of the specified a.a. (Figs. 8���11), represented by three different types: a and b similar to a and b of ventral side (Fig. 10: a, b), and type c sensilla ���spine-like, larger, not divided apically, and more deeply colored (brownish-ochreous) (Fig. 10: c). Number and distribution of specialized sensilla on ventral and dorsal sides of a.a. II, V, IX, and XIII as in Table 2. Cephalic plate. Ca. as long as wide; about as wide as the forcipular tergite; shape and chaetotaxy as in Figure 12. Clypeus. With 2 + 2 setae near the anterior margin and 1 + 1 setae in the center (Fig. 13). Labrum. Poorly sclerotized and poorly pigmented. Central part membranous with posterior border convex and without teeth or hairlike structures; sidepieces with 3 + 3 small sharply pointed teeth (Fig. 14). Mandibles. Dentate lamella not subdivided into blocks, with 8 teeth of which the two most ventral are largest (Figs. 15���17); pectinate lamella with ca. 17 hyaline teeth. First maxillae. Coxal projections subtriangular, well-developed, round tipped and provided with 1 + 1 ventral setae (Fig. 18). Telopodites with lappets, bearing 1 + 1 ventral setae (Fig. 18). Second maxillae. Apical claw of telopodites well developed, bipectinate, dorsal edge with ca. 13 teeth (Figs. 19, 20), ventral edge with ca. 10 teeth. Dorsal chaetotaxy of telopodites as in Figure 19. Forcipular segment. When closed, telopodites not extending beyond anterior margin of head. Forcipular tergite a little narrower than the tergite of the first leg-bearing segment (ratio 0.93: 1), chaetotaxy represented by 14 setae distributed as in Figure 24. Coxosternite: with complete chitin-lines (Fig. 21: a); maximum width / length at the middle ratio, ca. 1.58: 1; central part of anterior margin as in Figure 21. Telopodites: all articles without teeth; trochanteroprefemur with greatest length / greatest width 1.06: 1; internal edge of tarsungula not serrate, completely smooth (Figs. 21, 22). Calyx of poison gland subcylindrical, shape and relative size as in Figures 22, 23. Shape and chaetotaxy of coxosternite and telopodites as in Figures 21, 24. Tergites. Surface of pretergites and metatergites smooth, sulci not evident, chaetotaxy similar along all the body length (Fig. 25). Sternites of leg-bearing segments 1 to penultimate. Sternite 1 without pore-field, sternites 2 to 40 with an uninterrupted series of pore-fields; presence/absence of pore-fields on sternite 41 (antepenultimate) and 42 (penultimate) unclear due to inadequate mounting conditions in the original slide. All pore-fields undivided, subcircular in shape, and located on subcircular raised prominences. Form and relative size of pore-fields changing along trunk as in Figures 26���43. Number of pores on selected sternites as follows: sternite 2 (13); 3 (31); 4 (51); 5 (63); 6 (58); 7 (81); 10 (108); 14 (119); 19 (138); 22 (100); 24 (74); 27 (44); 29 (28); 31 (21); 33 (21); 34 (27); 35 (25); 39 (22). Legs (pair 1 to penultimate). First pair shorter than second pair in the proportion ca. 0.86: 1, articles of leg-pair 1 a little narrower that those of leg-pair 2 (relative size as in Figures 44, 45); chaetotaxy of legs similar throughout the entire body. Distribution, number and relative size of setae as in Figures 44���48. Claws with three thin and pale accessory spines ventrobasally, one anterior and two posterior (Fig. 49). Claws of a few walking legs with two accessory spines only, one anterior, one posterior (Fig. 50), (an additional presumptive posterior spine, lost by damage or truly absent?). Ultimate leg-bearing segment. About 1.25 times as wide as the penultimate leg-bearing segment; intercalary pleurites present at both sides of the ultimate pretergite; ultimate presternite divided along sagittal plane; length / width ratio of the tergite 0.82: 1; length / width ratio of the sternite 0.91: 1. Shape and chaetotaxy of tergite and sternite as in Figures 51, 52. Coxopleura very slightly protruding at distal internal ventral ends, setae distributed on almost the whole ventral, lateral and dorsal surfaces (Figs. 51, 52). Two single (���homogeneous���) coxal organs in each coxopleuron, the anterior being smaller than the posterior (Fig. 52), coxal pores opening on the membrane between coxopleuron and sternite, partially covered by the latter (Fig. 52). Ultimate legs with seven articles. Articles strongly thickened, femur wider than all the other telopodite articles (ratio of width of femur / width of tarsus 2 ca. 2.66: 1). Ratio of length of telopodites of ultimate legs / length of sternite ca. 1.34: 1. Shape and chaetotaxy of ultimate legs as in Figures 51, 52. Ultimate pretarsus represented by a long, straight, setiform structure. Postpedal segments. Intermediate tergite with posterior margin convex (Fig. 51); intermediate sternite with posterior margin very slightly concave, posterior margin of first genital sternite very slightly convex (Fig. 52). Gonopods apparently uniarticulate (suture between the presumptive basal and apical articles not evident), bearing ca. 4���5 ventral setae (Fig. 52). Female. Unknown. Remarks. Ityphilus calinus was insufficiently described by Chamberlin on the basis of a unique specimen (male holotype). The original description only includes a single figure, "fig. 7 " (here reproduced as Figure 106), showing the anterior end of the body in dorsal view; it does not state whether the forcipular tarsungulum is serrate or smooth; and completely lacks information on pilosity of the antennae, kind and number of specialized sensilla of a.a. II, V, IX and XIII, shape and teeth of labrum, shape and pilosity of the cephalic plate and clypeus, anterior and posterior limits of ventral pore-field series, etc. In his description Chamberlin stated ���Dorsal plates bisulcate, but in the holotype as preserved the sulci are apparently absent. The author also said ���Claws of prehensors when closed extending a little beyond anterior margin of head, but, this statement is only valid when the prehensors are fully extended (see Fig. 24), not when flexed. Furthermore, he stated: "This species differs from I. guianensis in having the antennae much less strongly crassate and less geniculate; also differing in the number of pairs of legs - 43 as against 49���55 ". Strikingly, he omitted to mention that the forcipular tarsungulum is smooth in I. calinus and serrate in I. guianensis. Since the entire holotype is mounted in dorsal position (and not dissected at all), observing shape and pilosity of first and second maxillae is difficult; for this reason the data and illustrations given herein for these structures are incomplete. Description of the shape of penis is not feasible for the same reason. Pereira (2012) gave a few approximate length/width ratios of some a.a. and cephalic plate, tentatively deduced from the original illustration given by Chamberlin (Fig. 106). The corresponding new ratios taken directly from the specimen reveal that the figure is imprecise. The male holotype of Ityphilus calinus is the only specimen recorded to date for this species. Ityphilus bonatoi sp. nov. (Figs. 53���105) Diagnosis. An Ityphilus species with internal edge of forcipular tarsungulum serrate. Among the other Neotropical members of the genus having the same trait it only shares with I. donatellae Pereira, 2012 a very small body size and a low number of leg-bearing segments. Ityphilus bonatoi sp. nov. can be differentiated from I. donatellae by means of the following selected traits (the corresponding traits in the latter are given in parentheses): body length of the female 13 mm (female: 11 mm, male: 8.5 mm); female with 41 leg-bearing segments (female with 43, male with 41); shape of the antennae as in Figures 53, 54 (as in Figure 107); a. a. Poorly pigmented; mid-piece membranous, smooth, slightly concave; sidepieces with 2 + 2 diminutive sharply pointed denticles (Fig. 63). Mandibles. Dentate lamella not subdivided into blocks, 9 teeth in the right mandible (Fig. 64), 7 teeth in left mandible; pectinate lamella with ca. 17 hyaline teeth. First maxillae. Coxosternite apparently without lappets, telopodites bearing lappets (Fig. 65). Coxosternite devoid of setae; coxal projections subtriangular, round tipped and provided with 1 + 1 setae (Fig. 65). Telopodites without visible suture between presumptive basal and distal articles, ventral surface with 1 + 1 setae near the central part of the medial edge (Fig. 65), dorsal surface with 1 + 1 sensilla. Second maxillae. Coxosternite without any trace of suture along the sagittal plane and provided with 4 + 5 setae arranged as in Figure 65. Apical claw of telopodites well developed, bipectinate, dorsal and ventral edges with 7 teeth (Figs. 66, 67). Forcipular segment. When closed, telopodites not reaching the anterior margin of the head (Fig. 61). Forcipular tergite slightly wider than the tergite of the first leg-bearing segment (ratio 1.10: 1), chaetotaxy represented by two irregular transverse rows each of ca. 11���13 setae (Fig. 61). Coxosternite: with complete chitinlines (Fig. 68: a); maximum width / length at the middle ratio, 1.83: 1; central part of anterior margin as in Figure 68. Telopodites: all articles without teeth; trochanteroprefemur with greatest length / greatest width 1.12: 1; internal edge of tarsungula expanded inwards, bearing 6���7 strong teeth occupying the middle and apical thirds (Figs. 68���70). Ultimate leg-bearing segment. About 1.10 times as wide as the penultimate; intercalary pleurites present at both sides of ultimate pretergite; ultimate presternite divided along the sagittal plane; length / width ratio of tergite 0.72: 1; length / width ratio of sternite 1.0: 1. Coxopleura very slightly protruding at distal-internal ventral ends, setae distributed on almost the whole ventral and lateral surfaces, dorsal side with setae on the external half only (Figs. 102, 103). Ultimate legs with seven articles. Articles strongly thickened, subconically narrowing from base to distal end, width of trochanter / width of tarsus 2 ca. 2.66: 1. Gonopods uniarticulate, without setae (Fig. 103). Remarks. The adult condition of the female holotype is indicated by the presence of spermatozoa in both spermathecae (Fig. 103: a). Etymology. The species is dedicated to my distinguished colleague Lucio Bonato (Dipartimento di Biologia, University of Padova, Italy) in recognition of his extraordinary skill, dedication, and hard work as a leader in analysing and establishing a common terminology for the external anatomy of all centipede orders. Genus Ribautia Br��lemann, 1909 Diagnosis. This genus can be distinguished from all other genera currently recognized in the family Geophilidae by the following combination of features. Second maxillae: united by a small coxosternal bridge only; antero-internal corners of coxosternite with a more or less developed process; prominent distally convergent ridges (statuminia sensu Crabill 1960) present. Forcipules: pleurocoxosternal sutures extending obliquely to the outer margin; chitinlines present; medial edge of trochanteroprefemur of telopodites either with a small unpigmented protuberance, with a conspicuous pigmented or unpigmented tooth, with two of these teeth, or without teeth. Sternal pores arranged in a single subcircular or longitudinaly elongate area on the anterior part of the trunk, in a single or two paired areas on the posterior part of the trunk (or even totally absent on the latter). Each coxopleuron of the ultimate leg-bearing segment with coxal organs, distributed in one of the following ways: (1) opening separately, (2) an anterior organ opening separately and all the remaining grouped in a cluster, (3) grouped in one to three clusters. Pretarsus of ultimate legs either claw-like or tubercle-like. Type species of the genus. Ribautia bouvieri Br��lemann, 1909, by monotypy. Remarks. Ityphilus calinus Chamberlin, 1957 (Chilopoda: Geophilomorpha, Ballophilidae), a poorly known centipede from Cauca Valley, Colombia, is herein redescribed and illustrated after the male holotype, revealing the condition of the forcipular tarsungulum (which is completely smooth), also giving new data on many other morphological features of specific value until now unknown. A new diminutive species named Ityphilus bonatoi sp. nov. is herein proposed after the holotype female from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The new species is characterized by having the internal edge of the forcipular tarsungulum serrate; among the other Neotropical members of the genus having the same trait, it only shares with I. donatellae Pereira, 2012 (from Central Amazon) a very small body size and a low number of leg-bearing segments. The new species represents the first record of the genus Ityphilus from the Atlantic Rainforest biome, and the southernmost representative of the genus in the Continent.
