16. Very-low dose antacid in treatment of duodenal ulcer: comparison with cimetidine

Abstract

Duodenal ulcer, a condition in which the wall of the small intestine develops painful, sometimes bleeding lesions, is thought to result from an imbalance between the protective effects of the gastrointestinal mucosa (lining) and the destructive effects of hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach. A standard therapeutic approach to the treatment of duodenal ulcer is the administration of drugs that reduced gastric acid secretion. However, there is controversy over what might be the most effective regimen for administration of acid antisecretory or antacid drugs. Additionally, there has been debate over the effectiveness of over-the-counter (OTC) antacid medications which simply neutralize gastric acid (rather than preventing secretion, as most prescription ulcer medications do). A comparative evaluation of the effectiveness of a widely used antisecretory drug (cimetidine, a blocker of histamine H2 receptors) and an OTC antacid (magaldrate) was carried out in a group of 371 consecutive ulcer patients who were being treated at a Brazilian ulcer clinic. The standard therapeutic dose of cimetidine (800 milligrams) was given once per day to one group of patients, and one of three very-low-dose regimens of OTC antacid was given to the other groups of patients. The healing rates in the patients administered antacid were higher at both four and eight weeks than in the cimetidine group. Healing rates in this study were not affected by age, sex, symptoms at entry, presence or absence of night pain, or coffee consumption. In the cimetidine-treated group, smoking was associated with a slower healing rate, but there was no association between smoking status and healing rate in the antacid groups. 26. Condemnation of bovine liver in the southern region of the State Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract

This survey was carried out in slaughter plants in the southern of the Espírito Santo State in order to study the causes and the percentages of liver condemnation during post mortem examination from 2008 to 2010. The main reasons for the condemnation of cattle livers in routine meat inspection of the State Inspection Service were fasciolosis (62.2%), telangiectatic (12.2%), bleeding (5.9%), abscess (5.2%), cysticercosis (4.0%), adherence (3.7%), infection (1.9%) and tuberculosis (1.1%). The hepatic fascioliasis was responsible for most of the lover condemnations, constituting a major challenge to livestock health in the south of the Espírito Santo.

Abstract

Comunicação oral apresentada ao 7.º Congresso Nacional de Bibliotecários,Arquivistas e Documentalistas, no âmbito de um painel, coordenado pela Comissão Permanente do Grupo de Trabalho das Bibliotecas do Ensino Superior da BAD. Apresentam-se os resultados de um inquérito efectuado aos bibliotecários dos estabelecimentos de ensino superior politécnico portugueses com o intuito de perceber a sua perspectiva acerca dos utilizadores das bibliotecas. A amostra foi constituída pelos bibliotecários de todos os estabelecimentos de ensino superior politécnico existentes em 2001, em Portugal, tendo a taxa de resposta atingido os 65% do total. Obtiveram-se resultados acerca da utilização dos serviços e recursos disponibilizados pelas bibliotecas, tendo os bibliotecários identificado a necessidade de formação dos utilizadores como o maior obstáculo à utilização plena dos mesmos.

33. Effects of iron-ore mining and processing on metal bioavailability in a tropical coastal lagoon

Abstract

In water systems, water quality and geochemical properties of sediments determine the speciation of trace metals, metal transport, and sediment-water exchange, influencing metal availability and its potential effects on biota. Studies from temperate climates have shown that iron-ore mining and tailing wastewaters, besides being a source of trace metals, usually show high levels of dissolved ions and particulate suspended matter, thus having the potential of indirectly changing metal bioavailability. For the first time in the tropics, we identified the effects of iron-ore mining and processing on metal bioavailability in a coastal lagoon. With an extensive sampling scheme, we investigated the potential sources of metals; the links among metal levels in water, sediments, and invertebrates; and the contrasting effects on metal speciation and bioavailability. The metals Fe, Mn, Al, Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Hg, and As were measured in water, sediments (surface and profiles), and invertebrates from Mãe-Bá Lagoon and in the sites directly influenced by the mining operations (tailing dams and nearby rivers). In addition, samples from two other lagoons, considered pristine, were analyzed. The study area is located in the southeast of Brazil (Iron Quadrangle Region and a coastal area of Espírito Santo State). General water characteristics included pH, dissolved organic carbon, alkalinity, and anion composition. Water metal speciation was assessed by a speciation model (Chemical Equilibria in Aquatic Systems). Grain-size distribution, organic carbon, carbonate, and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) were determined in sediments. Statistical methods included comparison of means by Mann-Whitney test, ordination and correlation analyses, and analysis of regression for geochemical normalization of metals with grain size.
