1. A Systematic Review of Social Media as a Teaching and Learning Tool in Higher Education: A Theoretical Grounding Perspective

Abstract

The use of social media in higher education has been demonstrated in a number of studies to be an attractive and contemporary method of teaching and learning. However, further research and investigation are required in order to align social media's pedagogical benefits with the theoretical perspectives that inform educational practices. It is the objective of this study to provide a systematic literature review using bibliometric analysis techniques and content analysis to provide a map of research produced between 2009 and 2021. This study aims to identify theoretical frameworks, current research trends, and patterns in this field. A total of 772 publications were analysed using bibliometric methodology, while a subset of 55 publications were analysed using content analysis. As indicated by the results, there is still a growing interest in this area of research, with recent studies still focusing on attitudes towards the use of social media in teaching and learning. According to the content analysis, technology acceptance theories and learning theories are the most commonly used reference theories. This field has yet to elaborate on pedagogical theory, and there is a tendency to rely primarily on technology acceptance models rather than pedagogical models. A discussion of future practice and research implications is also provided.

Abstract

Accumulating evidence points to an important role for the gut microbiome in anti-tumor immunity. Here, we show that altered intestinal microbiota contributes to anti-tumor immunity, limiting tumor expansion. Mice lacking the ubiquitin ligase RNF5 exhibit attenuated activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) components, which coincides with increased expression of inflammasome components, recruitment and activation of dendritic cells and reduced expression of antimicrobial peptides in intestinal epithelial cells. Reduced UPR expression is also seen in murine and human melanoma tumor specimens that responded to immune checkpoint therapy. Co-housing of Rnf5-/- and WT mice abolishes the anti-tumor immunity and tumor inhibition phenotype, whereas transfer of 11 bacterial strains, including B. rodentium, enriched in Rnf5-/- mice, establishes anti-tumor immunity and restricts melanoma growth in germ-free WT mice. Altered UPR signaling, exemplified in Rnf5-/- mice, coincides with altered gut microbiota composition and anti-tumor immunity to control melanoma growth.

Abstract

This report uses the most recent Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) data, primarily from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 and Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2013 cycles, and seeks to evaluate the Ibero-American, countries where Spanish or Portuguese are the predominant languages, teaching profession in support of policy makers across the region. It provides contextual evidence about the environment in which Ibero-American teachers work and develop, underlining the need for concerted support for teachers in the region. It provides a general overview of the teaching workforce in the Ibero-American countries, analysing the key characteristics of the region's teachers and the extent of teacher sorting across schools and its relationship to equity in education. The report emphasises the importance of creating attractive teaching career structures and teacher-related policies that can lead to effective learning environments, and also discusses the policy implications of what the data do and do not show. It complements this country-level analysis with examples of excellence both from within the region and from more developed counterparts outside the region. 32. Assessment of Special Educational Needs Integration by the Educational Community in Spain

Abstract

The study collected and contrasted the opinions of different sectors of the educational community about the functioning and integration of students with special educational needs. In order to do this, a broad questionnaire was sent to teachers of diverse educational stages, to counsellors, parents and to students, both with and without special educational needs. The objective was to examine the respondents' approach to mainstream integration and their opinions about how their school operated. At the same time, the study examined their opinion concerning the work of the teachers, the learning and social development of the students, the relationships with families and the input of the education authorities. Barriers which create difficulties for educational integration were assessed. (Contains 15 tables)

Abstract

This milestone 4.3 considers possible public / governmental revenue streams for the Distributed System of Scientific Collections Research Infrastructure (DiSSCo-RI) and identifies key partnerships that will ensure a suitable and economically sustainable model for national contributions to the RI. It will look at the main financial challenges of creating a sustainable DiSSCo, taking into consideration DiSSCo’s unique position within the taxonomy and open data landscapes. A key consideration in this milestone is the need for financial contributions to DiSSCo to cover its central activity: the production of data, an activity which should allow the research infrastructure to reach a broader user group and attract increased investment. It will also analyse the existing ESFRI landscape and contribution models in order to ascertain to what extent these models could be applicable, or not, in the creation of the DiSSCo research infrastructure. This milestone is drafted in close collaboration with DPP WP7 (Governance, Policy and Legal framework – Task 7.1).

Abstract

Objectives To assess the characteristics and risk of lymphoma in a large cohort of patients with SLE. Methods A case–cohort analysis was performed within a dynamic cohort of SLE patients from the Spanish Society of Rheumatology Lupus Registry (RELESSER). Clinical and analytical features were compared between the lymphoma SLE group and the control SLE group using an independent-sample Student's t -test or Mann–Whitney test for continuous variables and the χ2 test for categorical variables with Fisher's exact test if necessary. The multivariate analysis was based on a generalized linear model. Results Twenty-one patients with SLE and lymphoma and 3965 non-lymphoma controls with SLE were studied. Most lymphomas were of B cell origin (n  = 15/21), with diffuse large B cell lymphoma being the most frequent histological type (8/21, 38.1%). As in the general population, the risk of lymphoma in SLE was higher in male than in female patients and increased with age. In the lymphoma SLE group, bivariate analysis showed a significantly higher percentage of pericarditis, organic brain syndrome, seizures, vasculitis, haemolytic anaemia, splenomegaly, venous thrombosis and mean modified (excluding lymphoma) SLICC/ACR damage index. In contrast, renal involvement, positive anti-dsDNA, and antimalarials ever were less frequent. Conclusions In this large multicentre Spanish cohort, we identified characteristics of SLE that are associated with a higher risk of lymphoma. Antimalarials were significantly negatively associated with risk of lymphoma in SLE patients. Nevertheless, further prospective studies are needed to clarify these findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The reactivity of xenon with terrestrial oxides was investigated by in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction. At high temperature (T > 500 kelvin), some silicon was reduced, and the pressure stability of quartz was expanded, attesting to the substitution of some xenon for silicon. When the quartz was quenched, xenon diffused out and only a few weight percent remained trapped in samples. These results show that xenon can be covalently bonded to oxygen in quartz in the lower continental crust, providing an answer to the missing xenon problem; synthesis paths of rare gas compounds are also opened., The atmospheres of Earth and Mars are depleted in Xe by a factor of 20 relative to other rare gases (i.e., Ne, Ar, and Kr) (1). Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine whether iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in young South African mothers alters mother-infant interactions and the infant's development. The study was a prospective, randomized, controlled intervention trial with 3 groups of mothers: nonanemic controls and anemic mothers administered either placebo (25 mg ascorbic acid and 10 [micro]g folate) or daily iron treatment (125 mg FeS[O.sub.4] plus ascorbate and folate). Mothers of full-term, normal birth weight infants (n = 81) were followed from 10 wk to 9 mo postpartum. Maternal iron status, socioeconomic level, mother-infant interaction [Parent/Caregiver Involvement Scale (PCIS scale)], and infant development (Griffiths scale) were assessed. At baseline, anemic mothers tended (P < 0.10) to be less responsive to, and more controlling of, their infants. Infants of anemic mothers were developmentally delayed at 10 wk in hand-eye movement and overall quotient. Despite normalization of maternal iron status with supplementation in some mothers, the developmental delays were not diminished at 9 mo. At 9 mo, anemic mothers were significantly more 'negative' towards their babies, engaged less in goal setting, and were less 'responsive' than control mothers. In contrast, the behavior of anemic mothers given iron treatment toward their children was similar to that of the control mothers on all 11 scales of the PCIS. In conclusion, IDA altered mother-child interactions at both 10 wk and 9 mo postpartum. Additionally, infants whose mothers were anemic in the early postpartum scored worse on developmental tests at 10 wk and 9 mo of age. Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine whether iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in mothers alters their maternal cognitive and behavioral performance, the mother-infant interaction, and the infant's development. This article focuses on the relation between IDA and cognition as well as behavioral affect in the young mothers. This prospective, randomized, controlled, intervention trial was conducted in South Africa among 3 groups of mothers: nonanemic controls and anemic mothers receiving either placebo (10 [micro]g folate and 25 mg vitamin C) or daily iron (125 mg FeS[O.sub.4], 10 [micro]g folate, 25 mg vitamin C). Mothers of full-term normal birth weight babies were followed from 10 wk to 9 mo postpartum (n = 81). Maternal hematologic and iron status, socioeconomic, cognitive, and emotional status, mother-infant interaction, and the development of the infants were assessed at 10 wk and 9 mo postpartum. Behavioral and cognitive variables at baseline did not differ between iron-deficient anemic mothers and nonanemic mothers. However, iron treatment resulted in a 25% improvement (P < 0.05) in previously iron-deficient mothers' depression and stress scales as well as in the Raven's Progressive Matrices test. Anemic mothers administered placebo did not improve in behavioral measures. Multivariate analysis showed a strong association between iron status variables (hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, and transferrin saturation) and cognitive variables (Digit Symbol) as well as behavioral variables (anxiety, stress, depression). This study demonstrates that there is a strong relation between iron status and depression, stress, and cognitive functioning in poor African mothers during the postpartum period. There are likely ramifications of this poorer 'functioning' on mother-child interactions and infant development, but the constraints around this relation will have to be defined in larger studies. Abstract

En el marco de la Agenda 2030 destaca singularmente como ODS la tutela jurídica del Patrimonio histórico y cultural de cada país, Patrimonio integrado por los denominados bienes culturales. Las peculiaridades que presentan los denominados bienes culturales les hace merecedores de un régimen jurídico también especial, que condiciona tanto su titularidad como su transmisión en el mercado. La obra aborda precisamente el régimen jurídico de los bienes que integran la categoría de bienes culturales, analizándose detalladamente sus singularidades y su régimen jurídico; así, junto a los BIC y los bienes culturales en manos de las Instituciones eclesiásticas, en la obra se presta especial atención al denominado patrimonio cultural subacuático, por sus especiales características y régimen jurídico, condicionado por la propia ubicación de tales bienes. En la obra se analiza también el régimen jurídico de la transmisión de los bienes culturales, especialmente por lo que respecta a la transmisión internacional, prestándose especial atención a los efectos jurídicos derivados de una transmisión al margen de la normativa (civil y administrativa), así como a las transmisiones (adquisiciones) vinculadas a actuaciones ilícitas de actos de financiación del terrorismo. Es en este marco en el que en la obra se analizan con detenimiento las actuaciones de la UE en materia de tutela del Patrimonio cultural, así como de otros Organismos internacionales involucrados en la protección de este tipo de bienes, analizándose sus principales aportaciones y planteamientos de futuro. Finalmente, y en coherencia con la creciente tendencia a la resolución extrajudicial de los conflictos, la obra analiza detenidamente los principales mecanismos extrajudiciales de resolución de conflictos relativos a bienes culturales (devolución de bienes culturales que han abandonado de forma ilícita un Estado Miembro), tales como la cooperación administrativa, el ejercicio de la acción de restitución y los mecanismos de mediación y arbitraje.Eva M. Domínguez Pérez es profesora Titular de Derecho Mercantil, en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), en Madrid, desde el año 2008. Licenciada en Derecho por la Universidad de Salamanca (1994), en la que defendió su Tesis Doctoral (“Actos de competencia desleal a través de actos de imitación sistemática”, 2003, ed. Aranzadi), obteniendo Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado, es autora de innumerables publicaciones científicas sobre Derecho de la Competencia, Propiedad industrial y Derecho de la Publicidad, publicadas en obras colectivas (nacionales e internacionales) y en Revistas científicas nacionales e internacionales de impacto. Así mismo, la Prof. Domínguez ha iniciado y consolidado otras líneas de investigación, relativas a Derecho de Sociedades, Derecho de contratos y Derecho de la Cultura, siendo autora de varias monografías y publicaciones en obras colectivas y revistas científicas de impacto. Es además evaluadora externa de revistas científicas especializadas en Propiedad Industrial, Competencia y Derecho de la Publicidad. Junto a la actividad docente desarrollada en la Universidad de Salamanca, la prof.
