Search

Brown dwarfs are the bridge between low-mass stars and giant planets. One way of shedding light on their dominant formation mechanism is to study them at the earliest stages of their evolution, when they are deeply embedded in their parental clouds. Several works have identified pre- and proto-brown dwarfs candidates using different observational approaches. The aim of this work is to create a database with all the objects classified as very young substellar candidates in the litearature in order to study them in an homogeneous way. We have gathered all the information about very young substellar candidates available in the literature until 2020. We have retrieved their published photometry from the optical to the centimeter regime, and we have written our own codes to derive their bolometric temperatures and luminosities, and their internal luminosities. We have also populated the database with other parameters extracted from the literature, like e.g. the envelope masses, their detection in some molecular species, and presence of outflows. The result of our search is the SUCANES database, containing 174 objects classified as potential very young substellar candidates in the literature. We present an analysis of the main properties of the retrieved objects. Since we have updated the distances to several star forming regions, this has allowed us to reject some candidates based on their internal luminosities. We have also discussed the derived physical parameters and envelope masses for the best substellar candidates isolated in SUCANES. As an example of a scientific exploitation of this database, we present a feasibility study for the detection of radiojets with upcoming facilities: the ngVLA and the SKA interferometers. We obtain CO(1-0) molecular gas measurements with ATCA on a sample of 43 spectroscopically confirmed H$\alpha$ emitters in the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$ and investigate the relation between their star formation and cold gas reservoirs as a function of environment. We achieve a CO(1-0) detection rate of $\sim23\pm12\%$ with 10 dual CO(1-0) and H$\alpha$ detections at $10<\log M_{*}/M_\odot<11.5$. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the remaining sources. In terms of total gas fractions ($F_{gas}$), our sample is divided into two different regimes with a steep transition at $\log M_{*}/M_\odot\approx10.5$. Galaxies below that threshold have gas fractions that in some cases are close to unity, indicating that their gas reservoir has been replenished by inflows from the cosmic web. However, objects at $\log M_{*}/M_\odot>10.5$ display significantly lower gas fractions and are dominated by AGN (12 out of 20). Stacking results yield $F_{gas}\approx0.55$ for massive emitters excluding AGN, and $F_{gas}\approx0.35$ when examining only AGN candidates. We report the HST WFC3 G141 grism slitless spectroscopy observation of the core region of the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$. We analyzed the spectra of all objects in a $\sim 2 \times 2 \text{ arcmin}^2$ field of view and identified 40 protocluster members, recovering 19 previously identified H$\alpha$-emitters in addition to revealing 21 new members. The spectra allowed us to identify 11 galaxies with quiescent spectra. Three galaxies with quiescent spectra are possibly still star-forming according to SED fitting, indicating a possible left-over or dust-obscured star formation. We estimate a quiescent fraction of $\sim 50\%$ for $M_\star > 10^{11} M_\odot$. About half of the quiescent galaxies possibly host AGN, hinting at AGN's key role in quenching galaxies in the protocluster environment. These quiescent galaxies have relatively more compact and concentrated light profiles than the star-forming members, but they are not yet as bulge-dominated as local ellipticals. These results are consistent with previous studies that indicate the Spiderweb protocluster is in the maturing stage, with a red sequence that has begun forming., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Near-infrared (NIR) emission is less affected by dust than UV and optical emission and is therefore useful for studying the properties of dust-obscured galaxies. Although rest-frame NIR observations of high-redshift galaxies have long been made using space telescopes, their structures were unresolved due to the lack of angular resolution. This letter reports the early results from the analysis of high-resolution Pa$\beta$ imaging of the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$ with the JWST Near Infrared Camera. We investigate radial profiles of Pa$\beta$ lines and rest-frame NIR continua from luminous H$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (HAEs) in the protocluster. Particularly, we compare those of 11 HAEs (N-HAEs) on the star-forming main sequence with those of 8 HAEs (X-HAEs) with X-ray AGNs. Resultant composite Pa$\beta$ line images of N-HAEs indicate significant star formation in galactic disks. In contrast, X-HAEs are dominated by point source components rather than outer star formation, as inferred from our earlier work based on multi-wavelength SED fitting. We report the results of the deep and wide Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.2 mm mapping of the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$. The observations were divided into six contiguous fields covering a survey area of 19.3\,arcmin$^2$. With $\sim$13h on-source time, the final maps in the six fields reach the 1$\sigma$ rms noise in a range of $40.3-57.1 \mu$Jy at a spatial resolution of $0.5-0.9$ arcsec. By using different source extraction codes and careful visual inspection, we detect 47 ALMA sources at a significance higher than 4$\sigma$. We construct the differential and cumulative number counts down to $\sim0.2$ mJy after the correction for purity and completeness obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. The ALMA 1.2 mm number counts of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) in the Spiderweb protocluster are overall two times that of general fields, some fields/regions showing even higher overdensities (more than a factor of 3). This is consistent with the results from previous studies over a larger scale using single-dish instruments. Comparison of the spatial distributions between different populations indicates that our ALMA sources are likely drawn from the same distribution as CO(1-0) emitters from the COALAS large program, but distinct from that of H$\alpha$ emitters. The cosmic SFR density of the ALMA sources is consistent with previous results (e.g. LABOCA 870 $\mu$m observations) after accounting for the difference in volume. We show that molecular gas masses estimates from dust measurements are not consistent with the ones derived from CO(1-0) and thus have to be taken with caution. The multiplicity fraction of single-dish DSFGs is higher than that of the field. Moreover, two extreme concentrations of ALMA sources are found on the outskirts of the Spiderweb protocluster, with an excess of more than 12 times that of general fields., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables. We combine JWST/NIRCam and Subaru/MOIRCS dual Pa$\mathrm{\beta}$ + H$\mathrm{\alpha}$ narrow-band imaging to trace the dust attenuation and the star-formation activities of a sample of 43 H$\mathrm{\alpha}$ emitters at the core of one of the most massive and best-studied clusters in formation at the cosmic noon: the Spiderweb protocluster at $\mathrm{z=2.16}$. We find that most H$\mathrm{\alpha}$ emitters display Pa$\mathrm{\beta}$/H$\mathrm{\alpha}$ ratios compatible with Case B recombination conditions, which translates into nebular extinction values ranging at $\mathrm{A_V\approx0-3}$ magnitudes, and dust corrected $\mathrm{Pa\beta}$ star formation rates consistent with coeval main sequence field galaxies at fixed stellar mass ($\mathrm{9.4<\log M_*/M_\odot<11.0}$) during this cosmic epoch. Furthermore, we investigate possible environmental impacts on dust extinction across the protocluster large-scale structure and find no correlation between the dustiness of its members and environmental proxies such as phase-space position, clustercentric radius, or local density. These results support the scenario for which dust production within the main galaxy population of this protocluster is driven by secular star formation activities fueled by smooth gas accretion across its large-scale structure. This downplays the role of gravitational interactions in boosting star formation and dust production within the Spiderweb protocluster, in contrast with observations in higher redshift and less evolved protocluster cores., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures. We report the initial result of our Pa$\beta$ narrowband imaging on a protocluster with the JWST Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam). As NIRCam enables deep narrowband imaging of rest-frame NIR lines at $z>1$, we target one of the most studied protoclusters, the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$, in which previous studies have confirmed more than a hundred member galaxies. The NIRCam F405N narrowband filter covers in Pa$\beta$ line the protocluster redshift given by known protocluster members, allowing the search for new member candidates. The weight-corrected color-magnitude diagram obtained 57 sources showing narrowband excesses, 41 of which satisfy further color selection criteria for limiting the sample to Pa$\beta$ emitter candidates at $z\sim2.16$, and 24 of them do not have H$\alpha$ emitter counterparts. The Pa$\beta$ emitter candidates appear to follow the spatial distribution of known protocluster members; however, follow-up spectroscopic confirmation is required. Only 17 out of 58 known H$\alpha$-emitting cluster members are selected as Pa$\beta$ emitters in the current data, albeit the rest fall out of the narrowband selection owing to their small Pa$\beta$ equivalent widths. We derive Pa$\beta$ luminosity function in the Spiderweb protocluster, showing a normalization density of $\log{\phi^\ast}=-2.53\pm0.15$ at a characteristic Pa$\beta$ luminosity of $\log{L^\ast}=42.33\pm0.17$. Furthermore, we examine the possibility of detecting faint line emitters visible only in the narrow-band image, but find no promising candidates., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

Low-mass galaxies at high redshifts are the building blocks of more massive galaxies at later times and are thus key populations for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. We have made deep narrow-band observations for two protoclusters and the general field in COSMOS at $z$ $\sim$ 2. In a clumpy young protocluster, USS1558$-$003, at $z$ = 2.53, we find many star-forming galaxies well above the star-forming main sequence of field galaxies at the low-mass end ($M_{\star}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}<10^{8.9}$). This suggests that some environmental effects may be at work in low-mass galaxies in high-density regions to enhance their star formation activities. In the core of this protocluster, we also find that enhanced star formation activity of middle-mass galaxies ($10^{8.9} < M_{\star}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}} < 10^{10.2}$) while such trends are not observed in a more mature protocluster, PKS1138$-$262 at $z$ = 2.16. We expect these activities to be mainly due to galaxy mergers/interactions and differences in the amount of cold gas accretion. As one piece of evidence, we show that the star formation activity within individual galaxies in the protoclusters is more centrally concentrated than those in the field. This is probably due to the enhanced interactions between galaxies in the protocluster, which can reduce the angular momentum of the gas, drive the gas towards the galaxy center, and lead to a central starburst.

Methods.We applied distinct selection criteria to attain an SFG sample with minimal AGN contamination. Multiple approaches were used to estimate the intrinsic extinction, SFR and gas-phase metallicity for the SFGs. In conjunction with findings in the literature, we examined the correlation between SFRs and stellar masses ($M_*$), as well as the metallicity evolution depending on $M_*$. Finally, the 3D relationship between $M_*$, SFR and metallicity, is also studied.} Results. From the initial spectroscopic sample of 409 FIR-selected objects from the Lockman--SpReSO catalogue, 69 (17\%) AGNs have been identified and excluded, which is nearly double the percentage found in local studies, leaving a sample of 340 SFGs. The analysis of the $M_*$--SFR relationship revealed that Lockman--SpReSO IR-selected SFGs show signs of evolution at redshifts $z>0.4$, shifting above the main sequence, with a mean value of $\sim0.4$ dex. They are located within the starburst galaxy region since 78\% of the galaxies fall into this category. In addition, no evident flattening was found in the relation to specific SFR with redshift for $\log M_* (M_\odot) \gtrsim 10.5$. In line with the $M_*$--metallicity relation (MZR) outcomes published in previous studies for optically selected SFGs, however, during the analysis of the MZR, it was found that IR-selected SFGs exhibit lower metallicities than those anticipated on the basis of their $M_*$ and redshift. During the investigation of the 3D $M_*$--SFR--metallicity relation (FP), it was established that the research sample is consistent with relations in the existing literature, with an average scatter of $\sim0.2$ dex. However, a re-calibration of the FP when using the SFR obtained from the IR luminosity is required and, in this case, no attenuation in the correlation for $\log M_* (M_\odot) \gtrsim 10.5$ is observed., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted in A&A

In this paper, we revisit the data for the galaxy cluster ZwCl 0024.0+1652 provided by the GLACE survey and study the mass--metallicity function and its relationship with the environment. Here we describe an alternative way to reduce the data from OSIRIS tunable filters. This method gives us better uncertainties in the fluxes of the emission lines and the derived quantities. We present an updated catalogue of cluster galaxies with emission in H$\alpha$ and [N\,{\sc{ii}}] $\lambda\lambda$6548,6583. We also discuss the biases of these new fluxes and describe the way in which we calculated the mass--metallicity relationship and its uncertainties. We generated a new catalogue of 84 emission-line galaxies with reliable fluxes in [N\,{\sc{ii}}] and H$\alpha$ lines from a list of 174 galaxies. We find a relationship between the clustercentric radius and the density of galaxies. We derived the mass--metallicity relationship for ZwCl 0024.0+1652 and compared it with clusters and field galaxies from the literature. We find a difference in the mass--metallicity relationship when compared to more massive clusters, with the latter showing on average higher values of abundance. This could be an effect of the quenching of the star formation, which seems to be more prevalent in low-mass galaxies in more massive clusters. Methods. We performed measurements of the \MgII, \MgI, \FeIIa, \FeIIb, and \FeIIc\ spectral lines present in the spectra of the selected sample to determine the EW and velocity of the flows observed in the star-forming galaxies. Subsequently, we conducted $10^7$ bootstrap simulations using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient ($\rho_s$) to explore correlations with galaxy properties. Furthermore, we calculated the covering factor, gas density, and optical depth for the measured \ion{Fe}{II} doublets. Results. Our analysis revealed strong correlations between the EW of \ion{Mg}{II} lines and both $M_{*}$ ($\rho_s=0.43$, 4.5$\sigma$) and SFR ($\rho_s=0.42$, 4.4$\sigma$). For the \ion{Fe}{II} lines, we observed strong correlations between the EW and SFR ($\rho_s\sim0.65$, $>3.9\sigma$), with a weaker correlation for $M_{*}$ ($\rho_s\sim0.35$, $>1.9\sigma$). No notable correlations were found between velocity measurements of \ion{Mg}{II} line and $M_{*}$, SFR, or sSFR of the objects ($\rho_s\sim0.1)$. However, a negative strong correlation was found between the velocity of the \ion{Fe}{II} lines and the SFR of the galaxies ($\rho_s\sim-0.45$, $\sim3\sigma$). Our results align with previous studies but studying FIR-selected objects. Finally, we detected a candidate \textit{loitering outflow}, a recently discovered subtype of FeLoBAL quasar, at redshift of $z=1.4399$, exhibiting emission in \ion{C}{III}] and low line velocities ($|v|\lesssim$ 200 km/s)., Comment: 25 pages, 31 figures

We use K-band multi-object near-infrared spectroscopy with Keck/MOSFIRE to search for environmental imprints on the gas properties of 27 narrow-band selected H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) across the three major clumps of the assembling USS1558--003 protocluster at $z=2.53$. We target the H$\alpha$ and [NII]$\lambda$6584 emission lines to obtain star-formation rates (SFR) and gas-phase oxygen abundances for our sources, confirming the membership of 23 objects. HAEs belonging to this protocluster display enhanced SFRs with respect to the main sequence of star formation at the same cosmic epoch. This effect is more prominent for low-mass galaxies ($\mathrm{\log M_*/M_\odot<10.0}$), which may be experiencing a vigorous phase of mass assembly shortly after they were formed. We compute the individual and stacked gas-phase metallicities for our sources finding a metallicity deficit for low-mass objects when compared against the field mass-metallicity relation and the massive Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$. These results suggest that HAEs within USS1558--003 may be less evolved than those in the Spiderweb protocluster. Finally, we explore the gas metallicity - gas fraction relation for a small sample of five galaxies with CO(3-2) molecular gas information. Assuming our objects are in equilibrium, we obtain a relatively wide range of mass loading factors ($\mathrm{\lambda=0.5-2}$) matching field samples at the cosmic noon but in contrast with our previous results in the Spiderweb protocluster. We speculate that these discrepancies between protoclusters may be (partly) driven by differences in their current dynamical and mass assembly stages, hinting at the co-evolution of protoclusters and their galaxy populations at $2

In this work we analyze how reputation-based interactions influence the emergence of innovations. To do so, we make use of a dynamic model that mimics the discovery process by which, at each time step, a pair of individuals meet and merge their knowledge to eventually result in a novel technology of higher value. The way in which these pairs are brought together is found to be crucial for achieving the highest technological level. Our results show that when the influence of reputation is weak or moderate, it induces an acceleration of the discovery process with respect to the neutral case (purely random coupling). However, an excess of reputation is clearly detrimental, because it leads to an excessive concentration of knowledge in a small set of people, which prevents a diversification of the technologies discovered and, in addition, leads to societies in which a majority of individuals lack technical capabilities.

This paper presents the results of 475 hours of interferometric observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array towards the Spiderweb protocluster at \(z=2.16\). We search for large, extended molecular gas reservoirs among 46 previously detected CO(1-0) emitters, employing a customised method we developed. Based on the CO emission images and position-velocity diagrams, as well as the ranking of sources using a binary weighting of six different criteria, we have identified 14 robust and 7 tentative candidates that exhibit large extended molecular gas reservoirs. These extended reservoirs are defined as having sizes greater than 40 kpc or super-galactic scale. This result suggests a high frequency of extended gas reservoirs, comprising at least \(30 \%\) of our CO-selected sample. An environmental study of the candidates is carried out based on N-th nearest neighbour and we find that the large molecular gas reservoirs tend to exist in denser regions. The spatial distribution of our candidates is mainly centred on the core region of the Spiderweb protocluster. The performance and adaptability of our method are discussed. We found 13 (potentially) extended gas reservoirs located in nine galaxy (proto)clusters from the literature. We noticed that large extended molecular gas reservoirs surrounding (normal) star-forming galaxies in protoclusters are rare. This may be attributable to the lack of observations low-J CO transitions and the lack of quantitative analyses of molecular gas morphologies. The large gas reservoirs in the Spiderweb protocluster are a potential source of the intracluster medium seen in low redshift Virgo- or Coma-like galaxy clusters., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures. As a considerable investment of time from various telescope facilities were dedicated toward studying the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.2$, it so far remains one of the most extensively studied protocluster. We report here the latest results in this field, adding a new dimension to previous research on cluster formation at high redshift. Previous studies have reported a significant overdensity ($\delta\sim10$) of massive H$\alpha$ (+ [Nii]) -emitting galaxies in 3700 comoving Mpc$^3$. Many of these were previously considered to be dusty, actively star-forming galaxies, given their rest-frame optical and infrared features. However, this study argues that a third of them are more likely to be "passively-evolving" galaxies with low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) rather than star-forming galaxies, given the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting including an AGN component. For their SED-based star formation rates to be valid, bulk of their H$\alpha$ + [Nii] emission should come from the central AGNs. This difference in interpretation between this work and past studies, including ours, is particularly supported by the recent deep Chandra X-ray observation. Furthermore, we have spectroscopically confirmed a quiescent nature for one of these AGNs, with its multiple stellar absorption lines but also low ionisation emission lines. The widespread emergence of opinion polarization is often attributed to the rise of social media and the internet, which can promote selective exposure and the formation of echo chambers. However, experimental evidence shows that exposure to opposing views through cross-cutting ties is common in both online and offline social contexts, which frequently involve long-standing personal relationships. To account for these facts, we have developed an opinion model that applies to static contact structures, in which an agent's influence over their neighbors depends on their similarity in opinion. Our findings suggest that polarization can emerge in such static structures and, driven by an increased narrow-mindedness, even in presence of non-negligible cross-cutting ties. The polarized opinion distributions generated by our model closely resemble those obtained in surveys about highly polarized issues, allowing us to categorize various issues based on their controversial nature., Comment: 15 pages including 8 figures

In this paper, we provide uniform bounds for convergence rates of the low frequencies of a parametric family of problems for the Laplace operator posed on a rectangular perforated domain of the plane of height $H$. The perforations are periodically placed along the ordinate axis at a distance $O(\epsilon)$ between them, where $\epsilon$ is a parameter that converges towards zero. Another parameter $\eta$, the Floquet-parameter, ranges in the interval $[-\pi, \pi]$. The boundary conditions are quasi-periodicity conditions on the lateral sides of the rectangle and Neumann over the rest. We obtain precise bounds for convergence rates which are uniform on both parameters $\epsilon$ and $\eta$ and strongly depend on $H$. As a model problem associated with a waveguide, one of the main difficulties in our analysis comes near the nodes of the limit dispersion curves.

Large classes of non-supersymmetric string models equipped with standard-model features have been constructed, but very little of their phenomenology is known. Interestingly, their spectra exhibit scalar fields whose only couplings to observed particles is through a multi-Higgs sector. On the other hand, bottom-up models with Higgs portals offer still an acceptable framework for dark matter. We explore realizations of such Higgs portals in promising heterotic orbifold models without supersymmetry. We find that a sample model includes Higgs vacua that are stable at one-loop, in which the Higgs sector is compatible with particle-physics observations and a scalar can account for the measured dark matter abundance. In such vacua, interesting constraints on the masses of the dark matter candidate and the heavy Higgs sector are uncovered. We use multi-object near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy with VLT/KMOS to investigate the role of the environment in the evolution of the ionized gas properties of narrow-band selected H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) in the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$. Based on rest-frame optical emission lines, H$\alpha$ and [NII]$\lambda$6584, we confirm the cluster membership of 39 of our targets (i.e. 93% success rate), and measure their star-formation rates (SFR), gas-phase oxygen abundances and effective radius. We parametrize the environment where our targets reside by using local and global density indicators based on previous samples of spectroscopic and narrow-band cluster members. We find that star-forming galaxies embedded in the Spiderweb protocluster display SFRs compatible with those of the main sequence and morphologies comparable to those of late-type galaxies at $z=2.2$ in the field. We also report a mild gas-phase metallicity enhancement ($0.6\pm0.3$ dex) at intermediate stellar masses. Furthermore, we identify two UVJ-selected quiescent galaxies with residual H$\alpha$-based star formation and find signs of extreme dust obscuration in a small sample of SMGs based on their FIR and H$\alpha$ emission. Interestingly, the spatial distribution of these objects differs from the rest of HAEs, avoiding the protocluster core. Finally, we explore the gas fraction-gas metallicity diagram for 7 galaxies with molecular gas masses measured by ATCA using CO(1-0). In the context of the gas-regulator model, our objects are consistent with relatively low mass-loading factors, suggesting lower outflow activity than field samples at the cosmic noon and thus, hinting at the onset of environmental effects in this massive protocluster., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures. Context. Extragalactic surveys are a key tool for better understanding the evolution of galaxies. Both deep and wide-field surveys serve to provide a clearer emerging picture of the physical processes that take place in and around galaxies, and to identify which of these processes are the most important in shaping the properties of galaxies. Aims. The Lockman Spectroscopic Redshift Survey using Osiris (Lockman-SpReSO) aims to provide one of the most complete optical spectroscopic follow-ups of the far-infrared (FIR) sources detected by the \textit{Herschel} Space Observatory in the Lockman Hole (LH) field. The optical spectroscopic study of the FIR-selected galaxies supplies valuable information about the relation between fundamental FIR and optical parameters, including extinction, star formation rate, and gas metallicity. In this article, we introduce and provide an in-depth description of the Lockman-SpReSO project and of its early results. Methods. We selected FIR sources from \textit{Herschel} observations of the central 24 arcmin $\times$ 24 arcmin of the LH field with an optical counterpart up to 24.5 $R_{\rm C}$(AB). The sample comprises 956 \textit{Herschel} FIR sources, plus 188 additional interesting objects in the field. These are point X-ray sources, cataclysmic variable star candidates, high-velocity halo star candidates, radio sources, very red quasi-stellar objects, and optical counterparts of sub-millimetre galaxies. The faint component of the catalogue ($R_{\rm C}(\mathrm{AB})\geq20$) was observed using the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias in multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) mode. Galaxy quenching is a critical step in galaxy evolution. In this work, we present a statistical study of galaxy quenching in 17 cluster candidates at 0.5

Understanding cooperative behavior in biological and social systems constitutes a scientific challenge, being the object of intense research over the past decades. Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain the presence and persistence of cooperation in those systems, showing that there is no unique explanation, as different scenarios have different possible driving forces. In this paper, we propose a model to study situations in which voluntary participation involves an access cost to the cooperative interaction, besides the cost associated with cooperation. The proposed Costly-Access Prisoner's Dilemma, a symmetric donation game with voluntary and costly participation, breaks the symmetry between abstainers and participants of the Voluntary Prisoner's Dilemma. A mean-field approach shows that, in well-mixed populations, the dynamic always leads the system to abstention. However, depending on the return parameter, numerical simulations in structured populations display an alternating behavior between mono-strategic, multi-stable, and coexistence phases. This behavior is fully explained through a theoretical analysis of the strategic motifs, the transitions being determined by the change in stability of those motifs., Comment: 13 pages including 7 figures. We present optical spectroscopy observations of 145 high-mass pre-main sequence candidates from the catalogue of Vioque et al. (2020). From these, we provide evidence for the Herbig nature of 128 sources. This increases the number of known objects of the class by $\sim50\%$. We determine the stellar parameters of these sources using the spectra and Gaia EDR3 data. The new sources are well distributed in mass and age, with 23 sources between $4$-$8$ M$_{\odot}$ and 32 sources above $8$ M$_{\odot}$. Accretion rates are inferred from H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ luminosities for 104 of the new Herbigs. These accretion rates, combined with previous similar estimates, allow us to analyze the accretion properties of Herbig stars using the largest sample ever considered. We provide further support to the existence of a break in accretion properties at $\sim3$-$4$ M$_{\odot}$, which was already reported for the previously known Herbig stars. We re-estimate the potential break in accretion properties to be at $3.87^{+0.38}_{-0.96}$ M$_{\odot}$. As observed for the previously known Herbig stars, the sample of new Herbig stars independently suggests intense inner-disk photoevaporation for sources with masses above $\sim7$ M$_{\odot}$. We examine the band-gap structure of the spectrum of the Neumann problem for the Laplace operator in a strip with periodic dense transversal perforation by identical holes of a small diameter $\varepsilon>0$. The periodicity cell itself contains a string of holes at a distance $O(\varepsilon)$ between them. Under assumptions on the symmetry of the holes, we derive and justify asymptotic formulas for the endpoints of the spectral bands in the low-frequency range of the spectrum as $\varepsilon \to 0$. We demonstrate that, for $\varepsilon$ small enough, some spectral gaps are open. The position and size of the opened gaps depend on the strip width, the perforation period, and certain integral characteristics of the holes. The asymptotic behavior of the dispersion curves near the band edges is described by means of a `fast Floquet variable' and involves boundary layers in the vicinity of the perforation string of holes. The dependence on the Floquet parameter of the model problem in the periodicity cell requires a serious modification of the standard justification scheme in homogenization of spectral problems. Some open questions and possible generalizations are listed.

We present a study of the relationships and environmental dependencies between stellar mass, star formation rate, and gas metallicity for more than 700 galaxies in groups up to redshift 0.35 from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. To identify the main drivers, our sample was analyzed as a function of group-centric distance, projected galaxy number density, and stellar mass. By using control samples of more than 16000 star-forming field galaxies and volume limited samples, we find that the highest enhancement in SFR (0.3 dex) occurs in galaxies with the lowest local density. In contrast to previous work, our data show small enhancements of $\sim$0.1 dex in SFR for galaxies at the highest local densities or group-centric distances. Our data indicates quenching in SFR only for massive galaxies, suggesting that stellar mass might be the main driver of quenching processes for star forming galaxies. We can discard a morphological driven quenching, since the S\'ersic index distribution for group and control galaxies are similar. The gas metallicity does not vary drastically. It increases $\sim$0.08 dex for galaxies at the highest local densities, and decreases for galaxies at the highest group-centric distances, in agreement with previous work. Altogether, the local density, rather than group-centric distance, shows the stronger impact in enhancing both, the SFR and gas metallicity. We applied the same methodology to galaxies from the IllustrisTNG simulations, and although we were able to reproduce the general observational trends, the differences between group and control samples only partially agree with the observations, Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present the analysis of a sample of \ha\,, \hb\ and \oii\ emission line galaxies from the \otelo\ survey, with masses typically below $log(M_*/M_\sun) \sim 9.4$ and redshifts between $z \sim 0.4$ and 1.43. We study the star formation rate, star formation rate density, and number density and their evolution with redshift. We obtain a robust estimate of the specific star formation rate -- stellar mass relation based on the lowest mass sample published so far. We also determine a flat trend of the star formation rate density and number density with redshift. Our results suggest a scenario of no evolution of the number density of galaxies, regardless of their masses, up to redshift $z\sim1.4$. This implies a gradual change of the relative importance of the star forming processes, from high-mass galaxies to low-mass galaxies, with decreasing redshift. We also find little or no variation of the star formation rate density in the redshift range of $0.4

We study a sample of H$\beta$ emission line sources at $z\sim$0.9 to identify the star-forming (SF) galaxies sample and characterise them in terms of line luminosity, stellar mass, SFR, and morphology. The final aim is to obtain the H$\beta$ luminosity function (LF) of the SF galaxies at this redshift. We used the instrument OSIRIS at GTC to obtain the pseudo spectra of emission line sources in the OTELO field. From these pseudo spectra, we identified the objects with H$\beta$ emission. As the resolution of the pseudo spectra allowed us to separate H$\beta$ from O[III], we derive the H$\beta$ flux without contamination. Using data from the extended OTELO catalogue, we discriminated AGNs and studied the SFR, the stellar mass, and the morphology of the SF galaxies. We find that our sample is located on the main sequence of SF galaxies. The sources are morphologically classified, mostly as disc-like galaxies (76%), and 90% of the sample are low-mass galaxies ($M_*<10^{10}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot$). The low-mass SF galaxies at $z \sim 0.9$ that were detected by OTELO present similar properties as low-mass SF galaxies in the local universe, suggesting that these kinds of objects do not have a favorite epoch of formation and star formation enhancement from $z \sim 1$ to now. Our sample of 40 H$\beta$ SF galaxies includes the faintest H$\beta$ emitters detected so far. This allows us to constrain the faint end of the LF for the H$\beta$ line alone with a minimum luminosity of $\log L = 39 \;\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}$, which is a hundred times fainter than previous surveys. The dust-corrected OTELO H$\beta$ LF established the faint-end slope as $\alpha =-1.36\pm 0.15$. We increased the scope of the analysis to the bright end by adding ancillary data from the literature, which was not dust-corrected in this case. Leptoquarks extending the Standard Model (SM) are attracting an increasing attention in the recent literature. Hence, the identification of 4D SM-like models and the classification of allowed leptoquarks from strings is an important step in the study of string phenomenology. We perform the most extensive search for SM-like models from the non-supersymmetric heterotic string $\mathrm{SO}(16)\times\mathrm{SO}(16)$, resulting in more than 170,000 inequivalent promising string models from 138 Abelian toroidal orbifolds. We explore the 4D massless particle spectra of these models in order to identify all exotics beside the three generations of quarks and leptons. Hereby, we learn which leptoquark can be realized in this string setup. Moreover, we analyze the number of SM Higgs doublets which is generically larger than one. Then, we identify SM-like models with a minimal particle content. These so-called "almost SM" models appear most frequently in the orbifold geometries $\mathbb Z_2\times\mathbb Z_4$ (2,4) and (1,6). Finally, we apply machine learning to our dataset in order to predict the orbifold geometry where a given particle spectrum can be found most likely., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, 9 tables

We report a detailed CO(1-0) survey of a galaxy protocluster field at $z=2.16$, based on 475 hours of observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We constructed a large mosaic of 13 individual pointings, covering an area of 21 arcmin$^2$ and $\pm6500$ km/s range in velocity. We obtain a robust sample of 46 CO(1-0) detections spanning $z=2.09-2.22$, constituting the largest sample of molecular gas measurements in protoclusters to date. The CO emitters show an overdensity at $z=2.12-2.21$, suggesting a galaxy super-protocluster or a protocluster connected to large-scale filaments with ~120 cMpc size. We find that 90% CO emitters have distances $>0'.5-4'$ to the center galaxy, indicating that small area surveys would miss the majority of gas reservoirs in similar structures. Half of the CO emitters have velocities larger than escape velocities, which appears gravitationally unbound to the cluster core. These unbound sources are barely found within the $R_{200}$ radius around the center, which is consistent with a picture in which the cluster core is collapsed while outer regions are still in formation. Compared to other protoclusters, this structure contains relatively more CO emitters with relatively narrow line width and high luminosity, indicating galaxy mergers. We use these CO emitters to place the first constraint on the CO luminosity function and molecular gas density in an overdense environment. The amplitude of the CO luminosity function is 1.6$\pm$0.5 orders of magnitudes higher than observed for field galaxy samples at $z\sim2$, and one order of magnitude higher than predictions for galaxy protoclusters from semi-analytical SHARK models. We derive a high molecular gas density of $0.6-1.3\times10^{9}$ $M_\odot$ cMpc$^{-3}$ for this structure, consistent with predictions for cold gas density of massive structures from hydro-dynamical DIANOGA simulations., Comment: 21 pages + Appendices, 9 figures, 6 tables. We analyse the Higgs sector of an $S_3$ model with three Higgs doublets and no CP violation. After electroweak breaking there are nine physical Higgs bosons, one of which corresponds to the Standard Model one. We study the scalar and gauge sectors of this model, taking into account the conditions set by the minimisation and stability of the potential. We calculate the masses, trilinear and quartic Higgs-Higgs, and Higgs-gauge couplings. We consider two possible alignment scenarios, where only one of the three neutral scalars has couplings to the gauge bosons and corresponds to the SM Higgs, and whose trilinear and quartic couplings reduce exactly to the SM ones. We also obtain numerically the allowed parameter space for the scalar masses in each of the alignment scenarios. We use the calculated trilinear and quartic couplings to find the analytical structure of the one-loop neutral scalar mass matrix, without fermionic contributions. We show that it is possible to have a compact mass spectrum where the contribution to the oblique parameters might be small.
