Abstract

The AMADEUS collaboration is investigating the low-energy antikaon interactions with nucleons and nuclei, taking advantage of the lowmomentum antikaons beam provided by the DAΦNE collider at LNF-INFN. In this work a novel technique is outlined for the measurement of the hyperonnucleon two and three body scattering cross sections. The method consists in producing hyperons by antikaons atomic captures in light nuclear targets, and extrapolating the cross sections from the measurement of the yields of the corresponding elastic final state interactions of the hyperons. The feasibility of this kind of analyses is shown by comparison of calculated Σ0 production in 4He by K− absorption on three nucleons, with a sample of K−12C absorption measured by AMADEUS in collaboration with KLOE. The feasibility of a dedicated high statistics measurement is discussed.

5. Search for dark forces at KLOE-2

Abstract

During the last years several Dark Sector Models have been proposed in order to address striking and puzzling astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. In the minimal case a new vector particle, the so called dark photon or U-boson, is introduced, with small coupling with Standard Model particles. Also, the existence of a dark Higgs boson h’ is postulated, in analogy with the Standard Model, to give mass to the U-boson through the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking mechanism. The discovery of such a Dark Force Mediator would belong to a new field of Physics Beyond the Standard Model. The KLOE experiment, working on the DAΦNE e+e− collider in Frascati, searched for the existence of the U-boson in a quite complete way, investigating several different processes and final states. Tight limits on the model parameters have been set at 90%CL. Further improvements are expected in terms of sensitivity and discovery potential with the new KLOE-2 detector working on the improved DAΦNE e+e− collider, which has collected more than 5 fb−1.

Abstract

The KLOE-2 Collaboration succesfully ended its data-taking collecting a total integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb−1 at the peak of the φ(1020) resonance at the DAΦNE collider of the Frascati LNF. New detectors have been added to the KLOE apparatus to improve the detector acceptance, the tracking capability, and also to be able to tag the scattered electrons in γγ processes. By summing the new data sample to the old one of the previous KLOE data-taking ended in 2006, a total of about 8 fb−1 has been collected, corresponding to 24 billions of φ produced. The measurement program of KLOE-2 includes precision studies on kaon and other light mesons, hadronic cross-section, and dark force searches.

7. Physics beyond the standard model with the J-PET detector

Abstract

The Positronium (Ps) system, a bound state of an electron and a positron, is suitable for testing the predictions of quantum electrodynamics (QED), since its properties can be perturbatively calculated to high accuracy and, unlike the hydrogen system, is not affected by finite size or QCD effects at the current experimental precision level. This makes the Ps atom a good laboratory to test the Fundamental Symmetries of Physics and also search for new particles not included in the Standard Model (SM) of physics. On one hand, time reversal (T) and CP symmetry violation have never been observed in pure leptonic systems like the Ps atom, and the current experimental limits for CP and CPT violation in the decays of Ps is currently set at the level of 10$^{-3}$, while for C violation are at the level of 10$^{-7}$. These limits are still six and two orders of magnitude lower than the expected precision of 10$^{-9}$ set by photon-photon interactions. Secondly, experiments searching for invisible decays of the Ps triplet state, the ortho-Positronium (o-Ps), which mainly decays to three photons, are being conducted, since they are sensitive to new physics scenarios, e.g. Mirror Matter (MM), a suitable Dark Matter candidate, proposed to restore parity (P) violation. By performing a high precision measurement of the o-Ps lifetime, the accuracy of the present QED calculations can be tested and a search for the invisible decays of the o-Ps can be performed. These studies are conducted with the novel total-body Positron-Electron Tomograph (PET) scanner at the Jagiellonian University. The J-PET is a large and high precise medical imaging tool, based on the plastic scintillators. It is a high acceptance multi-purpose detector optimized for the detection of photons from positron-electron annihilation and can be used in a broad scope of interdisciplinary investigation, e.g. medical imaging, life-time measurements, quantum entanglement studies with o-Ps, and tests of discrete symmetries.

Abstract

The aim of the AMADEUS experiment is to investigate the lowenergy antikaon interaction with nucleons and nuclei, exploiting the unique lowmomentum beam of kaons produced by the DAΦNE collider at LNF-INFN, to constrain hadronic nuclear physics models in the strangeness -1 sector. As a first step the data collected in 2004/2005 by the KLOE collaboration, consisting in a complex of K−absorptions in H,4He,9Be and12C, was analyzed, leading to the first invariant mass spectroscopic study with very low momentum (about 100 MeV) in-flight K−captures. A dedicated pure Carbon target was also implemented in the central region of the KLOE detector, providing a high statistic reference sample of pure at-rest K−nuclear interaction. The first measurement of the non-resonant transition amplitude $\left| {{T_{{K^ - }n \to \Lambda {\pi ^ - }}}} \right|$ at $\sqrt s = 33$ MeV below the ${\text{\bar KN}}$ threshold is presented, in relation with the Λ(1405) properties studies.

15. $\gamma \gamma$ physics and transition form factors with KLOE/KLOE2

Abstract

The KLOE results on the measurement of the transition form factors of the $\eta$ and $\pi^{0}$ mesons in $\phi$ Dalitz decays are presented. Also we report in the determination of the $\Gamma (\eta \to \gamma \gamma)$ in $\gamma \gamma$ collisions, for which KLOE has delivered the most precise measurement up to the date. The prospects for $\gamma \gamma$ physics of the upgraded detector KLOE-2, which is taking data aiming to collect more than 5 fb$^{−1}$ by March 2018, are reviewed.

Abstract

We present new data for angular distributions and on the cross section ratio of the $p + d \rightarrow ^{3}He + \it{\eta}$ reaction at excess energies of $\it{Q}$ = 48.8 MeV and $\it{Q}$ = 59.8 MeV. The data have been obtained at the WASA-at-COSY experiment (Forschungszentrum Jülich) using a proton beam and a deuterium pellet target. While the shape of obtained angular distributions show only a slow variation with the energy, the new results indicate a distinct and unexpected total cross section fluctuation between $\it{Q}$ = 20 MeV and $\it{Q}$ = 60 MeV, which might indicate the variation of the production mechanism within this energy interval.

Abstract

Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) observables are a suitable experimental tool to examine effects induced by quark masses on the nuclear level. Previous high precision data from TRIUMF and IUCF are currently used to develop a consistent description of CSB within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. In this work the experimental studies on the reaction dd\rightarrow $^{4}He\pi ^{0}$ have been extended towards higher excess energies in order to provide information on the contribution of p-waves in the final state. For this, an exclusive measurement has been carried out at a beam momentum of $p_{d}=1.2$ GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section amounts to $\sigma _{tot} = (118 \pm 18_{stat} \pm 13_{sys} \pm 8_{ext}) pb$ and first data on the differential cross section are consistent with s-wave pion production.

Abstract

An exclusive measurement of the dd\rightarrow $^{3}Hen\pi^{0}$ eaction was carried out at a beam momentum of $p_{d}$=1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. Information on the total cross section as well as differential distributions was obtained. The data are described by a phenomenological approach based on a combination of a quasifree model and a partial wave expansion for the three-body reaction. The total cross section is found to be $\sigma _{tot}= \left ( 2.89\pm 0.01_{stat}\pm 0.06_{sys}\pm 0.29_{norm} \right )\mu b$. The contribution of the quasifree processes (with the beam or target neutron being a spectator) accounts for 38% of the total cross section and dominates the differential distributions in specific regions of phase space. The remaining part of the cross section can be described by a partial wave decomposition indicating the significance of p-wave contributions in the final state.

Abstract

Exclusive measurements of the quasifree $pn\rightarrow pp\pi ^{0}\pi ^{-}$ reaction have been performed by means of pd collisions at $T_{p}$= 1.2 GeV using the wide angle shower apparatus (WASA) detector setup at the cooler synchrotron COSY (Institut für Kernphysik, Jülich). Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $\sqrt{8}=\left ( 2.35-2.46 \right )$ GeV, which includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure. No ABC effect, i.e., low-mass enhancement is found in the $\pi ^{0}\pi ^{-}$ -invariant mass spectrum, in agreement with the constraint from Bose statistics that the isovector pion pair can not be in relative s wave. At the upper end of the covered energy region t-channel processes for Roper, $\Delta \left ( 1600 \right )$ and $\Delta \Delta$ excitations provide a reasonable description of the data, but at low energies the measured cross sections are much larger than predicted by such processes. Adding a resonance amplitude for the resonance at m=2.37 GeV with $\Gamma$ =70 MeV and $I\left ( J^{P} \right )=0\left ( 3^{+} \right )$ observed recently in $pn\rightarrow d\pi ^{0}\pi ^{0}$ and $pn\rightarrow d\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$ reactions leads to an agreement with the data also at low energies.

40. Measurement of the $pn \to pp\pi ^{0}\pi ^{-}$ reaction in search of the ABC resonance

Abstract

With $pd$ collisions at $T_{p}$ = 1.2 GeV exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pn \to pp\pi ^{0}\pi ^{-}$ reaction have been carried out. Using the WASA detector setup at COSY total and differential cross sections have been obtained for the energy region $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.35 - 2.48 GeV. Though this includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure, no low-mass enhancement (ABC effect) is found in the $\pi ^{0}\pi ^{-}$ -invariant mass spectrum – in agreement with the constraint from Bose statistics demanding the isovector pion pair to be in relative p-wave. Conventional calculations including t-channel processes for Roper, $\Delta$(1600) and $\Delta\Delta$ excitations and their decays, which are well-known from the study of the two-pion production in pp collisions, provide a reasonable description of the data at high energies, but fall low at low energies. From this we conclude that a large contribution from a so far unknown isoscalar low-energy process is missed in the calculations. Inclusion of the ABC resonance at m = 2.37 GeV with $\Gamma$ = 70 MeV and I(J$^{P}$) = 0(3$^{+}$), which was recently observed in the $pn \to d\pi ^{0}\pi ^{0}$ reaction, leads to a much improved description of the data at low energies.

Abstract

An exclusive measurement of the decay $\eta \rightarrow \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \gamma$ has been performed at the WASA facility at COSY. The $\eta$ mesons were produced in the fusion reaction $pd \rightarrow ^{3}He X$ at a proton beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c. Efficiency corrected differential distributions have been extracted based on 13 960 $\pm$ 140 events after background subtraction. The measured pion angular distribution is consistent with a relative p-wave of the two-pion system, whereas the measured photon energy spectrum was found at variance with the simplest gauge invariant matrix element of $\eta \rightarrow \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \gamma$. A parameterization of the data can be achieved by the additional inclusion of the empirical pion vector form factor multiplied by a first-order polynomial in the squared invariant mass of the $\pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ system.

Abstract

With pd collisions at T_p = 1.2 GeV exclusive measurements of the quasi-free pn -> pppi^0pi^- reaction have been carried out. Using the WASA detector setup at COSY total and differential cross sections have been obtained for the energy region &radics = 2.35 - 2.48 GeV. Though this includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure, no low-mass enhancement (ABC effect) is found in the pi^0pi^--invariant mass spectrum - in agreement with the constraint from Bose statistics demanding the isovector pion pair to be in relative p-wave. Conventional calculations including t-channel processes for Roper, Delta(1600) and DeltaDelta excitations and their decays, which are well-known from the study of the two-pion production in pp collisions, provide a reasonable description of the data at high energies, but fall low at low energies. From this we conclude that a large contribution from a so far unknown isoscalar low-energy process is missed in the calculations. Inclusion of the ABC resonance at m = 2.37 GeV with Gamma = 70 MeV and I(J^P) = 0(3^+), which was recently observed in the pn -> dpi^0pi^0 reaction, leads to a much improved description of the data at low energies.

Abstract

Objective: The Jagiellonian PET (J-PET) technology, based on plastic scintillators, has been proposed as a cost effective tool for detecting range deviations during proton therapy. This study investigates the feasibility of using J-PET for range monitoring by means of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation study of 95 patients who underwent proton therapy at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) in Krakow, Poland. &#xD;Approach: Discrepancies between prescribed and delivered treatments were artificially introduced in the simulations by means of shifts in patient positioning and in the Hounsfield unit to the relative proton stopping power calibration curve. A dual-layer, cylindrical J-PET geometry was simulated in an in-room monitoring scenario and a triple-layer, dual-head geometry in an in-beam protocol. The distribution of range shifts in reconstructed PET activity was visualised in the beam's eye view. Linear prediction models were constructed from all patients in the cohort, using the mean shift in reconstructed PET activity as a predictor of the mean proton range deviation. &#xD;Main results: Maps of deviations in the range of reconstructed PET distributions showed agreement with those of deviations in dose range in most patients. The linear prediction model showed a good fit, with coefficient of determination r^2 = 0.84 (in-room) and 0.75 (in-beam). Residual standard error was below 1 mm: 0.33 mm (in-room) and 0.23 mm (in-beam). &#xD;Significance: The precision of the proposed prediction models shows the sensitivity of the proposed J-PET scanners to shifts in proton range for a wide range of clinical treatment plans. Furthermore, it motivates the use of such models as a tool for predicting proton range deviations and opens up new prospects for investigations into the use of intra-treatment PET images for predicting clinical metrics that aid in the assessment of the quality of delivered treatment.&#xD., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)
