Context. Recent studies of the optical depth comparing [12CII] and [13CII] line profiles in Galactic star-forming regions revealed strong self-absorption in [12CII] by low excitation foreground material, implying a large column density of C+ corresponding to an equivalent AV of a few, up to about 10 mag. Aims. As the nature and origin of such a large column of cold C+ foreground gas are difficult to explain, it is essential to constrain the physical conditions of this material. Methods. We conducted high-resolution observations of [OI] 63 um and [OI] 145 um lines in M17 SW and Mon R2. The [OI] 145 um transition traces warm PDR-material, while the [OI] 63 um line traces foreground material as manifested by absorption dips. Results. Comparison of both [OI] line profiles with [CII] isotopic lines confirms warm PDR-origin background emission and a significant column of cold foreground material causing self-absorption visible in [12CII] and [OI] 63 um profiles. In M17 SW, the C+ and O column densities are comparable for both layers. Mon R2 exhibits larger O columns compared to C+, indicating additional material where the carbon is neutral or in molecular form. Small-scale spatial variation of the foreground absorption profiles and the large column density (around 1E18 cm-2 ) of the foreground material suggest emission from high-density regions associated with the cloud complex, not a uniform diffuse foreground cloud. The analysis confirms that the previously detected intense [CII] foreground absorption is attributable to a large column of low excitation dense atomic material, where carbon is ionized, and oxygen is in neutral atomic form., Comment: 30 pages, 24 figures

Context. Multi-wavelength studies of galaxies and galactic nuclei allow us to build a relatively more complete picture of the interstellar medium (ISM), especially in the dusty regions of starburst galaxies. An understanding of the physical processes in nearby galaxies can assist in the study of more distant sources at higher redshifts, which cannot be resolved. Aims. We aimed to use observations presented in the first part of this series of papers to model the physical conditions of the ISM in the nuclear region of NGC 253, in order to obtain primary parameters such as gas densities and metallicities. From the created model we further calculated secondary parameters such as gas masses of the different phases, and estimated the fraction of [C II] 158 um from the different phases, which allowed us to probe the nuclear star-formation rate. Methods. To compare theory with our observations we used MULTIGRIS, a probabilistic tool that determines probabilities for certain ISM parameters from a grid of Cloudy models together with a set of spectroscopic lines. Results. We find that the hypothetical active galactic nucleus within NGC 253 has only a minor impact compared to the starburst on the heating of the ISM as probed by the observed lines. We characterise the ISM and obtain parameters such as a solar metallicity, a mean density of ~230cm-3 , an ionisation parameter of log U = -3, and an age of the nuclear cluster of ~2 Myr. Furthermore, we estimate the masses of the ionised (3.8 x 10^6 M_sol ), neutral atomic (9.1 x 10^6 M_sol ), and molecular (2.0 x 10^8 M_sol ) gas phases as well as the dust mass (1.8 x 10^6 M_sol ) in the nucleus of NGC 253., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 15 pages, 10 Figures, 6 Tables

Context. Massive star-formation leads to enrichment with heavy elements of the interstellar medium. On the other hand, the abundance of heavy elements is a key parameter to study the star-formation history of galaxies. Furthermore, the total molecular hydrogen mass, usually determined by converting CO or [C ii] 158 $\mu$m luminosities, depends on the metallicity as well. The excitation of metallicity-sensitive emission lines, however, depends on the gas density of H ii regions, where they arise. Aims. We used spectroscopic observations from SOFIA, Herschel, and Spitzer of the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253, as well as photometric observations from GALEX, 2MASS, Spitzer, and Herschel in order to derive physical properties such as the optical depth to correct for extinction, as well as the gas density and metallicity of the central region. Methods. Ratios of the integrated line fluxes of several species were utilised to derive the gas density and metallicity. The [O iii] along with the [S iii] and [N ii] line flux ratios for example, are sensitive to the gas density but nearly independent of the local temperature. As these line ratios trace different gas densities and ionisation states, we examined if these lines may originate from different regions within the observing beam. The ([Ne ii] 13 $\mu$m + [Ne iii] 16 $\mu$m)/Hu $\alpha$ line flux ratio on the other hand, is independent of the depletion onto dust grains but sensitive to the Ne/H abundance ratio and will be used as a tracer for metallicity of the gas. Results. We derived values for gas phase abundances of the most important species, as well as estimates for the optical depth and the gas density of the ionised gas in the nuclear region of NGC 253. We report on recent improvements of the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment Control System (APECS) to cope with the ever increasing data rates and volumes. Also the very wide bandwidths of current instruments required switching to vectorized atmospheric opacity corrections using parallelization to speed these computations up for the quasi-realtime online pipeline. The SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Interstellar Medium) survey used the APEX telescope to map 84 deg^2 of the Galactic plane between l = -60 deg and l = +31 deg in several molecular transitions, including 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1), thus probing the moderately dense (~10^3 cm^-3) component of the interstellar medium. With an angular resolution of 30'' and a typical 1-sigma sensitivity of 0.8-1.0 K at 0.25 km/s velocity resolution, it gives access to a wide range of structures, from individual star-forming clumps to giant molecular clouds and complexes. The coverage includes a good fraction of the first and fourth Galactic quadrants, allowing us to constrain the large scale distribution of cold molecular gas in the inner Galaxy. In this paper we provide an updated overview of the full survey and the data reduction procedures used. We also assess the quality of these data and describe the data products that are being made publicly available as part of this first data release (DR1). We present integrated maps and position-velocity maps of the molecular gas and use these to investigate the correlation between the molecular gas and the large scale structural features of the Milky Way such as the spiral arms, Galactic bar and Galactic centre. We find that approximately 60 per cent of the molecular gas is associated with the spiral arms and these appear as strong intensity peaks in the derived Galactocentric distribution. We also find strong peaks in intensity at specific longitudes that correspond to the Galactic centre and well known star forming complexes, revealing that the 13CO emission is concentrated in a small number of complexes rather than evenly distributed along spiral arms., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We use the 13CO(2-1) emission from the SEDIGISM high-resolution spectral-line survey of the inner Galaxy, to extract the molecular cloud population with a large dynamic range in spatial scales, using the SCIMES algorithm. This work compiles a cloud catalogue with a total of 10663 molecular clouds, 10300 of which we were able to assign distances and compute physical properties. We study some of the global properties of clouds using a science sample, consisting of 6664 well resolved sources and for which the distance estimates are reliable. In particular, we compare the scaling relations retrieved from SEDIGISM to those of other surveys, and we explore the properties of clouds with and without high-mass star formation. Our results suggest that there is no single global property of a cloud that determines its ability to form massive stars, although we find combined trends of increasing mass, size, surface density and velocity dispersion for the sub-sample of clouds with ongoing high-mass star formation. We then isolate the most extreme clouds in the SEDIGISM sample (i.e. clouds in the tails of the distributions) to look at their overall Galactic distribution, in search for hints of environmental effects. We find that, for most properties, the Galactic distribution of the most extreme clouds is only marginally different to that of the global cloud population. The Galactic distribution of the largest clouds, the turbulent clouds and the high-mass star-forming clouds are those that deviate most significantly from the global cloud population. We also find that the least dynamically active clouds (with low velocity dispersion or low virial parameter) are situated further afield, mostly in the least populated areas. Messier 8 (M8), one of the brightest HII regions in our Galaxy, is associated with two prominent massive star-forming regions: M8-Main, the particularly bright part of the large scale HII region (mainly) ionised by the stellar system Herschel 36 (Her 36) and M8 East (M8 E), which is mainly powered by a deeply embedded young stellar object (YSO), a bright infrared (IR) source, M8E-IR. We aim to study the interaction of the massive star-forming region M8 E with its surroundings and to compare the star-forming environments of M8-Main and M8 E. We used the IRAM 30 m telescope to perform an imaging spectroscopy survey of the molecular environment of M8E-IR. We imaged and analysed data for the $J$ = 1 $\to$ 0 rotational transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, N$_2$H$^+$, HCN, H$^{13}$CN, HCO$^+$, H$^{13}$CO$^+$, HNC and HN$^{13}$C observed for the first time toward M8~E. We used LTE and non-LTE techniques to determine column densities of the observed species and to constrain the physical conditions of the gas responsible for their emission. Examining the YSO population in M8~E allows us to explore the observed ionization front (IF) as seen in GLIMPSE 8~$\mu$m emission image. We find that $^{12}$CO probes the warm diffuse gas also traced by the GLIMPSE 8~$\mu$m emission, while N$_2$H$^+$ and HN$^{13}$C trace the cool and dense gas. We find that the star-formation in M8~E appears to be triggered by the earlier formed stellar cluster NGC~6530, which powers an HII region giving rise to an IF that is moving at a speed $\geq$ 0.26~km~s$^{-1}$ across M8~E. We derive temperatures of 80 K and 30 K for the warm and cool gas components, respectively, and constrain H$_2$ volume densities to be in the range of 10$^4$--10$^6$~cm$^{-3}$. Comparison of the observed abundances of various species reflects the fact that M8~E is at an earlier stage of massive star formation than M8-Main.

We study ten molecular transitions obtained from an unbiased 3 mm molecular line survey using the IRAM 30 m telescope toward 409 compact dust clumps identified by the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) to understand photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated with the clumps. The main goal of this study is to investigate whether the abundances of the selected molecules show any variations resulting from the PDR chemistry in different clump environments. We selected HCO, HOC$^+$, C$_{2}$H, c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$, CN, H$^{13}$CN, HC$^{15}$N, and HN$^{13}$C as PDR tracers, and H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and C$^{18}$O as dense gas tracers. We find that the abundances of HCO, CN, C$_{2}$H and c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ decrease as the H$_{2}$ column density increase, indicating high visual extinction, while those of high density tracers (i.e., H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and HC$^{15}$N) are constant. In addition, $N$(HCO)/$N$(H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$) ratios significantly decrease as H$_{2}$ column density increase, and in particular, 82 clumps have $X$(HCO) $\gtrsim 10^{-10}$ and $N$(HCO)/$N$(H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$) $\gtrsim 1$, which are the indication of far-ultraviolet (FUV) chemistry. This suggests the observed HCO abundances are likely associated with FUV radiation illuminating the PDRs. We also find that high $N$(c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$)/$N$(C$_{2}$H) ratios found for HII regions having high HCO abundances ($\gtrsim\,10^{-10}$) are associated with more evolved clumps with high $L_{\rm bol}$/$M_{\rm clump}$. This trend might be associated with gain-surface processes, which determine initial abundances of these molecules, and time-dependent effects in the clumps corresponding to the envelopes around dense PDRs and HII regions. In addition, some fraction of the measured abundances of the small hydrocarbons of the HII sources can be the result of the photodissociation of PAH molecules., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables. Context. The [CII] 158 {\mu}m far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line is one of the most important cooling lines of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM). High spectral resolution observations have shown complex structures in the line profiles of the [CII] emission. Aims. Our aim is to determine whether the complex profiles observed in [^{12}CII] are due to individual velocity components along the line-of-sight or to self-absorption based on a comparison of the [^{12}CII] and isotopic [^{13}CII] line profiles. Methods. Deep integrations with the SOFIA/upGREAT 7-pixel array receiver in M43, Horsehead~PDR, Monoceros~R2, and M17~SW allow for the detection of optically thin [^{13}CII] emission lines, along with the [^{12}CII] emission lines, with a high signal-to-noise ratio. We first derived the [^{12}CII] optical depth and the [CII] column density from a single component model. However, the complex line profiles observed require a double layer model with an emitting background and an absorbing foreground. A multi-component velocity fit allows us to derive the physical conditions of the [CII] gas: column density and excitation temperature. Results. We find moderate to high [^{12}CII] optical depths in all four sources and self-absorption of [^{12}CII] in Mon R2 and M17 SW. The high column density of the warm background emission corresponds to an equivalent Av of up to 41 mag. The foreground absorption requires substantial column densities of cold and dense [CII] gas, with an equivalent Av ranging up to about 13 mag. Conclusions. The column density of the warm background material requires multiple photon-dominated region (PDR) surfaces stacked along the line of sight and in velocity. The substantial column density of dense and cold foreground [CII] gas detected in absorption cannot be explained with any known scenario and we can only speculate on its origins, Comment: 40 pages, 49 figures

Hydrocarbons are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium, but their formation is still not well understood, depending on the physical environment they are found in. M8 is host to one of the brightest HII regions and PDRs in our galaxy. Using the APEX, and the IRAM 30 m telescopes, we performed a line survey toward Herschel 36 (Her 36), which is the main ionizing stellar system in M8, and an imaging survey within 1.3 $\times$ 1.3 pc around Her 36 of various transitions of C$_{2}$H and c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$. We used both LTE and non-LTE methods to determine the physical conditions of the emitting gas along with the column densities and abundances of the observed species, which we compared with (updated) gas phase photochemical PDR models. In order to examine the role of PAHs in the formation of small hydrocarbons and to investigate their association with M8, we compared archival GLIMPSE 8 $\mu$m and the SPIRE 250 $\mu$m continuum images with the C$_{2}$H emission maps. We observed a total of three rotational transitions of C$_{2}$H with their hyperfine structure components and four rotational transitions of c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ with ortho and para symmetries toward M8. Fragmentation of PAHs seems less likely to contribute to the formation of small hydrocarbons as the 8 $\mu$m emission does not follow the distribution of C$_{2}$H emission, which is more associated with the molecular cloud. From the quantitative analysis, we obtained abundances of $\sim$ 10$^{-8}$ and 10$^{-9}$ for C$_{2}$H and c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ respectively, and volume densities of the hydrocarbon emitting gas in the range $n(\rm H_2)$ $\sim$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{4}$--5 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$. The observed column densities of C$_{2}$H and c-C$_3$H$_{2}$ are reproduced reasonably well by our PDR models. This supports the idea that in high-UV flux PDRs, gas phase chemistry is sufficient to explain hydrocarbon abundances., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

The past two decades have seen extensive surveys of the far-infrared to submillimeter continuum emission in the plane of our Galaxy. We line out prospects for the coming decade for corresponding molecular and atomic line surveys which are needed to fully understand the formation of the dense structures that give birth to clusters and stars out of the diffuse interstellar medium. We propose to work towards Galaxy wide surveys in mid-J CO lines to trace shocks from colliding clouds, Galaxy-wide surveys for atomic Carbon lines in order to get a detailed understanding of the relation of atomic and molecular gas in clouds, and to perform extensive surveys of the structure of the dense parts of molecular clouds to understand the importance of filaments/fibers over the full range of Galactic environments and to study how dense cloud cores are formed from the filaments. Atmospheric water vapor is the main limiting factor of atmospheric transparency in the mm and submm wavelength spectral windows. Thus, dry sites are needed for the installation and successful operation of radio astronomy observatories exploiting those spectral windows. Temperature and wind are variables of special consideration when planning the installation and operation of large-aperture radio telescopes, as these parameters affect the mechanical response of radio telescopes exposed to the environmental conditions. Temperature, and in particular temperature gradients, induce thermal deformation of mechanical structures, while high wind speeds and gusts induce pointing jitter affecting the tracking accuracy of astronomical sources during the observations. This work summarizes the statistics of precipitable water vapor (PWV), temperature, and wind monitored at sites by the coastal mountain range, as well as on the west slope of the Andes mountain range in the region of Antofagasta, Chile. This information could prove useful for the planning of extended baselines for the Atacama Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (ALMA), and/or new radio telescope projects, such as the Atacama Large Aperture Submm/ mm Telescope (AtLAST) initiative., Comment: 28 pages, 13 Figures. We present a large set of spectral lines detected in the $40"$ central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Observations were obtained with the three instruments SPIRE, PACS and HIFI on board the Herschel Space Observatory, upGREAT on board of the SOFIA airborne observatory, and the ground based APEX telescope. Combining the spectral and photometry products of SPIRE and PACS we model the dust continuum Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and the most complete $^{12}$CO Line SED reported so far toward the nuclear region of NGC 253. Properties and excitation of the molecular gas were derived from a three-component non-LTE radiative transfer model, using the SPIRE $^{13}$CO lines and ground based observations of the lower-$J$ $^{13}$CO and HCN lines, to constrain the model parameters. Three dust temperatures were identified from the continuum emission, and three components are needed to fit the full CO LSED. Only the third CO component (fitting mostly the HCN and PACS $^{12}$CO lines) is consistent with a shock/mechanical heating scenario. A hot core chemistry is also argued as a plausible scenario to explain the high-$J$ $^{12}$CO lines detected with PACS. The effect of enhanced cosmic ray ionization rates, however, cannot be ruled out, and is expected to play a significant role in the diffuse and dense gas chemistry. This is supported by the detection of ionic species like OH$^+$ and H$_2$O$^+$, as well as the enhanced fluxes of the OH lines with respect to those of H$_2$O lines detected in both PACS and SPIRE spectrum., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures, submitted, reviewed and accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal on April 12th 2018

Messier 8 is one of the brightest HII regions in the sky. Using SOFIA, APEX 12 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes, we have performed a comprehensive imaging survey of the emission from the [CII], [CI] and CO isotopologues within 1.3 $\times$ 1.3 pc around the dominant Herschel 36 (Her 36) stellar system. To further explore the morphology of the region we compare archival infrared, optical and radio images of the nebula with our newly obtained [CII] and CO data. We perform a quantitative analysis, using both LTE and non-LTE methods to determine the abundances of some of the observed species as well as kinetic temperatures and volume densities. Bright CO, [CII] and [CI] emission has been found towards the HII region and the photodissociation region (PDR) in M8. Our analysis places the bulk of the molecular material in the background of the nebulosity illuminated by the bright stellar systems Her 36 and 9 Sagitarii. Since the emission from all observed atomic and molecular tracers peaks at or close to the position of Her 36, we conclude that the star is still physically close to its natal dense cloud core and heats it. A veil of warm gas moves away from Her 36 toward the Sun and its associated dust contributes to the foreground extinction in the region. One of the most prominent star forming regions in M8, the Hourglass Nebula, is particularly bright due to cracks in this veil close to Her 36. By using radiative transfer modeling of different transitions of CO isotopologues, we obtain H$_{2}$ densities ranging from $\sim 10^{4} - 10^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$ and kinetic temperatures of 100 $-$ 150 K in the bright PDR caused by Her 36., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A)

Context: We describe the new SEPIA (Swedish-ESO PI Instrument for APEX) receiver, which was designed and built by the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD), at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) in collaboration with ESO. It was installed and commissioned at the APEX telescope during 2015 with an ALMA Band 5 receiver channel and updated with a new frequency channel (ALMA Band 9) in February 2016. Aims: This manuscript aims to provide, for observers who use the SEPIA receiver, a reference in terms of the hardware description, optics and performance as well as the commissioning results. Methods: Out of three available receiver cartridge positions in SEPIA, the two current frequency channels, corresponding to ALMA Band 5, the RF band 158--211 GHz, and Band 9, the RF band 600--722 GHz, provide state-of-the-art dual polarization receivers. The Band 5 frequency channel uses 2SB SIS mixers with an average SSB noise temperature around 45K with IF (intermediate frequency) band 4--8 GHz for each sideband providing total 4x4 GHz IF band. The Band 9 frequency channel uses DSB SIS mixers with a noise temperature of 75--125K with IF band 4--12 GHz for each polarization. We present a systematic survey of multiple velocity-resolved H$_2$O spectra using Herschel/HIFI towards nine nearby actively star forming galaxies. The ground-state and low-excitation lines (E$_{\rm up}\,\le 130\,{\rm K}$) show profiles with emission and absorption blended together, while absorption-free medium-excitation lines ($130\,{\rm K}\, \le\, E_{\rm up}\,\le\,350\,{\rm K}$) typically display line shapes similar to CO. We analyze the HIFI observation together with archival SPIRE/PACS H$_2$O data using a state-of-the-art 3D radiative transfer code which includes the interaction between continuum and line emission. The water excitation models are combined with information on the dust- and CO spectral line energy distribution to determine the physical structure of the interstellar medium (ISM). We identify two ISM components that are common to all galaxies: A warm ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,40-70\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\,\sim\,10^5-10^6\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) phase which dominates the emission of medium-excitation H$_2$O lines. This gas phase also dominates the FIR emission and the CO intensities for $J_{\rm up} > 8$. In addition a cold ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,20-30\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\sim\,10^4- 10^5\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) more extended phase is present. It outputs the emission in the low-excitation H$_2$O lines and typically also produces the prominent line absorption features. For the two ULIRGs in our sample (Arp 220 and Mrk 231) an even hotter and more compact (R$_s\,\le\,100$ pc) region is present which is possibly linked to AGN activity. We find that collisions dominate the water excitation in the cold gas and for lines with $E_{\rm up}\le300\,{\rm K}$ and $E_{\rm up}\le800\,{\rm K}$ in the warm and hot component, respectively. The origin and life-cycle of molecular clouds are still poorly constrained, despite their importance for understanding the evolution of the interstellar medium. We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous, spectroscopic survey of the inner Galactic plane, in order to complement the many continuum Galactic surveys available with crucial distance and gas-kinematic information. Our aim is to combine this data set with recent infrared to sub-millimetre surveys at similar angular resolutions. The SEDIGISM survey covers 78 deg^2 of the inner Galaxy (-60 deg < l < +18 deg, |b| < 0.5 deg) in the J=2-1 rotational transition of 13CO. This isotopologue of CO is less abundant than 12CO by factors up to 100. Therefore, its emission has low to moderate optical depths, and higher critical density, making it an ideal tracer of the cold, dense interstellar medium. The data have been observed with the SHFI single-pixel instrument at APEX. The observational setup covers the 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1) lines, plus several transitions from other molecules. The observations have been completed. Data reduction is in progress, and the final data products will be made available in the near future. Here we give a detailed description of the survey and the dedicated data reduction pipeline. Preliminary results based on a science demonstration field covering -20 deg < l < -18.5 deg are presented. Analysis of the 13CO(2-1) data in this field reveals compact clumps, diffuse clouds, and filamentary structures at a range of heliocentric distances. By combining our data with data in the (1-0) transition of CO isotopologues from the ThrUMMS survey, we are able to compute a 3D realization of the excitation temperature and optical depth in the interstellar medium. We probe the chemical and energetic conditions in dense gas created by radiative feedback through observations of multiple CO, HCN and HCO$^+$ transitions toward the dense core of M17 SW. We used the dual band receiver GREAT on board the SOFIA airborne telescope to obtain maps of the $J=16-15$, $J=12-11$, and $J=11-10$ transitions of $^{12}$CO. We compare these maps with corresponding APEX and IRAM 30m telescope data for low- and mid-$J$ CO, HCN and HCO$^+$ emission lines, including maps of the HCN $J=8-7$ and HCO$^+$ $J=9-8$ transitions. The excitation conditions of $^{12}$CO, HCO$^+$ and HCN are estimated with a two-phase non-LTE radiative transfer model of the line spectral energy distributions (LSEDs) at four selected positions. The energy balance at these positions is also studied. We obtained extensive LSEDs for the CO, HCN and HCO$^+$ molecules toward M17 SW. The LSED shape, particularly the high-$J$ tail of the CO lines observed with SOFIA/GREAT, is distinctive for the underlying excitation conditions. The critical magnetic field criterion implies that the cold cloudlets at two positions are partially controlled by processes that create and dissipate internal motions. Supersonic but sub-Alfv\'enic velocities in the cold component at most selected positions indicates that internal motions are likely MHD waves. Magnetic pressure dominates thermal pressure in both gas components at all selected positions, assuming random orientation of the magnetic field. The magnetic pressure of a constant magnetic field throughout all the gas phases can support the total internal pressure of the cold components, but it cannot support the internal pressure of the warm components. If the magnetic field scales as $B \propto n^{2/3}$, then the evolution of the cold cloudlets at two selected positions, and the warm cloudlets at all selected positions, will be determined by ambipolar diffusion., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, A&A accepted

Intermediate mass protostarsprovide a bridge between theories of low- and high-mass star formation. Emerging molecular outflows can be used to determine the influence of fragmentation and multiplicity on protostellar evolution through the correlation of outflow forces of intermediate mass protostars with the luminosity. The aim of this paper is to derive outflow forces from outflows of six intermediate mass protostellar regions and validate the apparent correlation between total luminosity and outflow force seen in earlier work, as well as remove uncertainties caused by different methodology. By comparing CO 6--5 observations obtained with APEX with non-LTE radiative transfer model predictions, optical depths, temperatures, densities of the gas of the molecular outflows are derived. Outflow forces, dynamical timescales and kinetic luminosities are subsequently calculated. Outflow parameters, including the forces, were derived for all sources. Temperatures in excess of 50 K were found for all flows, in line with recent low-mass results. However, comparison with other studies could not corroborate conclusions from earlier work on intermediate mass protostars which hypothesized that fragmentation enhances outflow forces in clustered intermediate mass star formation. Any enhancement in comparison with the classical relation between outflow force and luminosity can be attributed the use of a higher excitation line and improvement in methods; They are in line with results from low-mass protostars using similar techniques. The role of fragmentation on outflows is an important ingredient to understand clustered star formation and the link between low and high-mass star formation. During the embedded stage of star formation, bipolar molecular outflows and UV radiation from the protostar are important feedback processes. Our aim is to quantify the feedback, mechanical and radiative, for a large sample of low-mass sources. The outflow activity is compared to radiative feedback in the form of UV heating by the accreting protostar to search for correlations and evolutionary trends. Large-scale maps of 26 young stellar objects, which are part of the Herschel WISH key program are obtained using the CHAMP+ instrument on the APEX (12CO and 13CO 6-5), and the HARP-B instrument on the JCMT (12CO and 13CO 3-2). Maps are used to determine outflow parameters and envelope models are used to quantify the amount of UV-heated gas and its temperature from 13CO 6-5 observations. All sources in our sample show outflow activity and the outflow force, F_CO, is larger for Class 0 sources than for Class I sources, even if their luminosities are comparable. The outflowing gas typically extends to much greater distances than the power-law envelope and therefore influences the surrounding cloud material directly. Comparison of the CO 6-5 results with Herschel-HIFI H2O and PACS high-J CO lines, both tracing currently shocked gas, shows that the two components are linked, even though the transitions do not probe the same gas. The link does not extend down to CO 3-2. The conclusion is that CO 6-5 depends on the shock characteristics (density and velocity), whereas CO 3-2 is more sensitive to conditions in the surrounding environment (density). The radiative feedback is responsible for increasing the gas temperature by a factor of two, up to 30-50 K, on scales of a few thousand AU, particularly along the direction of the outflow. The mass of the UV heated gas exceeds the mass contained in the entrained outflow in the inner ~3000 AU and is therefore at least as important on small scales., Comment: 30 pages with Appendix, Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

We probe the column densities and masses traced by the ionized and neutral atomic carbon with spectrally resolved maps, and compare them to the diffuse and dense molecular gas traced by [C I] and low-$J$ CO lines toward the star-forming region M17SW. We mapped a 4.1pc x 4.7pc region in the [C I] 609 m$\mu$ line using the APEX telescope, as well as the CO isotopologues with the IRAM 30m telescope. We analyze the data based on velocity channel maps that are 1 km/s wide. We correlate their spatial distribution with that of the [C II] map obtained with SOFIA/GREAT. Optically thin approximations were used to estimate the column densities of [C I] and [C II] in each velocity channel. The spatial distribution of the [C I] and all CO isotopologues emission was found to be associated with that of [C II] in about 20%-80% of the mapped region, with the high correlation found in the central (15-23 km/s ) velocity channels. The excitation temperature of [C I] ranges between 40 K and 100 K in the inner molecular region of M17 SW. Column densities in 1 km/s channels between ~10$^{15}$ and ~10$^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$ were found for [C I]. Just ~20% of the velocity range (~40 km/s) that the [C II] line spans is associated with the star-forming material traced by [C I] and CO. The total gas mass estimated from the [C II] emission gives a lower limit of ~4.4x10$^3$ $M_{\odot}$. At least 64% of this mass is not associated with the star-forming material in M17SW. We also found that about 36%, 17%, and 47% of the [C II] emission is associated with the HII, HI, and H_2 regimes, respectively. Comparisons with the H41$\alpha$ line shows an ionization region mixed with the neutral and part of the molecular gas, in agreement with the clumped structure and dynamical processes at play in M17SW. We combine a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, tracking atomic and molecular phases of cold gas, with a three-dimensional radiative-transfer and line tracing code to study the sub-mm emission from atomic and molecular species (CO, HCN, [CI], [CII], [OI]) in galaxies. We compare the physics that drives the formation of stars at the epoch of peak star formation (SF) in the Universe (z = 2.0) with that in local galaxies. We find that normal star-forming galaxies at high redshift have much higher CO-excitation peaks than their local counterparts and that CO cooling takes place at higher excitation levels. CO line ratios increase with redshift as a function of galaxy star-formation rate, but are well correlated with H2 surface density independent of redshift. We find an increase in the [OI]/[CII] line ratio in typical star-forming galaxies at z = 1.2 and z = 2.0 with respect to counterparts at z = 0. Our model results suggest that typical star-forming galaxies at high redshift consist of much denser and warmer star-forming clouds than their local counterparts. Galaxies belonging to the tail of the SF activity peak at z = 1.2 are already less dense and cooler than counterparts during the actual peak of SF activity (z = 2.0). With new THz maps that cover an area of ~3.3x2.1 pc^2 we probe the spatial distribution and association of the ionized, neutral and molecular gas components in the M17 SW nebula. We used the dual band receiver GREAT on board the SOFIA airborne telescope to obtain a 5'.7x3'.7 map of the 12CO J=13-12 transition and the [C II] 158 um fine-structure line in M17 SW and compare the spectroscopically resolved maps with corresponding ground-based data for low- and mid-J CO and [C I] emission. For the first time SOFIA/GREAT allow us to compare velocity-resolved [C II] emission maps with molecular tracers. We see a large part of the [C II] emission, both spatially and in velocity, that is completely non-associated with the other tracers of photon-dominated regions (PDR). Only particular narrow channel maps of the velocity-resolved [C II] spectra show a correlation between the different gas components, which is not seen at all in the integrated intensity maps. These show different morphology in all lines but give hardly any information on the origin of the emission. The [C II] 158 um emission extends for more than 2 pc into the M17 SW molecular cloud and its line profile covers a broader velocity range than the 12CO J=13-12 and [C I] emissions, which we interpret as several clumps and layers of ionized carbon gas within the telescope beam. The high-J CO emission emerges from a dense region between the ionized and neutral carbon emissions, indicating the presence of high-density clumps that allow the fast formation of hot CO in the irradiated complex structure of M17 SW. The nearly edge-on galaxy NGC4945 is one of the closest galaxies where an AGN and starburst coexist, and is one of the brightest sources at 100 keV. Near and mid-infrared spectroscopy have shown very strong obscuration of its central region, rivaled only in strength by some of the most deeply obscured ULIRGs. We aim to determine the spatial distribution of ISM features in the central 426x426 pc^2 of NGC4945. We map the central region of NGC4945 in three Spitzer-IRS modules (SH, SL and LL). We produce maps of the flux distribution of the starburst tracers [Ne II], [Ne III], [S III] and [S IV] at 12.81, 15.56, 18.71 and 10.51 mum, respectively, and a map of the AGN narrow-line region tracer [Ne V] at 14.32 mum. We also mapped the S(1), S(2) and S(3) pure rotational lines of H2, which trace the distribution of warm molecular hydrogen. We obtained an extinction map (A_V) based on the apparent strength of the 9.7 mum silicate absorption feature. Our A_V map traces the contours of the starburst ring but the highest extinction (A_V(9.85 mum)~60) is found at the nucleus. Within the uncertainty of the astrometry all emission lines are found to peak on the nucleus, except for the warm molecular hydrogen emission which shows a maximum 60-100 pc NW of the nucleus. We favour a scenario in which the lower H2 0-0 S(1) and S(2) rotational lines originate mainly from an unobscured extra-nuclear component associated with the super-wind cone observed in the HST NICMOS map of the H2 1-0 S(1) vibrational line. For the [Ne V] emission we infer an attenuation of a factor 12-160 (A_V=55-112) based on a comparison of the ratio of our [Ne V] flux and the absorption-corrected 14-195 keV Swift-BAT flux to the average [Ne V]/BAT ratio for Seyfert 1 nuclei. The high attenuation indicates that [Ne V] and [O IV] cannot be used as extinction-free tracers of AGN power in galaxies with deeply buried nuclei., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Many efforts have been made to model the mass distribution and dynamical evolution of the circumnuclear gas in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, chemical evolution is not included in detail in three-dimensional (3-D) hydrodynamic simulations. The X-ray radiation from the AGN can drive the gas chemistry and affect the thermodynamics, as well as the excitation of the interstellar medium (ISM). Therefore, we estimate the effects (on chemical abundances and excitation) of X-ray irradiation by the AGN, for atomic and molecular gas in a 3-D hydrodynamic model of an AGN torus. We obtain the abundances of various species from an X-ray chemical model. A 3-D radiative transfer code estimates the level populations, which result in line intensity maps. Predictions for the CO J=1-0 to J=9-8 lines indicate that mid-J CO lines are excellent probes of density and dynamics in the central (<60 pc) region of the AGN, in contrast to the low-J CO lines. Analysis of the X_CO/\alpha conversion factors shows that only the higher-J CO lines can be used for gas mass determination in AGN tori. The [C II] 158 um emission traces mostly the hot (T_k>1000m K) central (<60 pc) region of the AGN torus. The [C II] 158 um line will be useful for ALMA observations of high redshift (z>1) AGNs. The spatial scales (>0.25 pc) probed with our simulations match the size of the structures that ALMA will resolve in nearby (<45 Mpc at 0.01") galaxies., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Context. HC3N is a molecule that is mainly associated with Galactic star-forming regions, but it has also been detected in extragalactic environments. Aims. To present the first extragalactic survey of HC3N, when combining earlier data from the literature with six new single-dish detections, and to compare HC3N with other molecular tracers (HCN, HNC), as well as other properties (silicate absorption strength, IR flux density ratios, C II flux, and megamaser activity). Methods. We present mm IRAM 30 m, OSO 20 m, and SEST observations of HC3N rotational lines (mainly the J = 10-9 transition) and of the J = 1-0 transitions of HCN and HNC. Our combined HC3N data account for 13 galaxies (excluding the upper limits reported for the non-detections), while we have HCN and HNC data for more than 20 galaxies. Results. A preliminary definition "HC3N-luminous galaxy" is made based upon the HC3N/HCN ratio. Most (~80 %) HC3N-luminous galaxies seem to be deeply obscured galaxies and (U)LIRGs. A majority (~60 % or more) of the HC3N-luminous galaxies in the sample present OH mega- or strong kilomaser activity. A possible explanation is that both HC3N and OH megamasers need warm dust for their excitation. Alternatively, the dust that excites the OH megamaser offers protection against UV destruction of HC3N. A high silicate absorption strength is also found in several of the HC3N-luminous objects, which may help the HC3N to survive. Since the main cooling lines of the gas phase are important tracers of the interstellar medium in Galactic and extragalactic sources, proper and detailed understanding of their emission, and the ambient conditions of the emitting gas, is necessary for a robust interpretation of the observations. With high resolution (7"-9") maps (~3x3 pc^2) of mid-J molecular lines we aim to probe the physical conditions and spatial distribution of the warm (50 to few hundred K) and dense gas (n(H_2)>10^5 cm^-3) across the interface region of M17 SW nebula. We have used the dual color multiple pixel receiver CHAMP+ on APEX telescope to obtain a 5'.3x4'.7 map of the J=6-5 and J=7-6 transitions of 12CO, the 13CO J=6-5 line, and the {^3P_2}-{^3P_1} 370 um fine-structure transition of [C I] in M17 SW. LTE and non-LTE radiative transfer models are used to constrain the ambient conditions. The warm gas extends up to a distance of ~2.2 pc from the M17 SW ridge. The 13CO J=6-5 and [C I] 370 um lines have a narrower spatial extent of about 1.3 pc along a strip line at P.A=63 deg. The structure and distribution of the [C I] {^3P_2}-{^3P_1} 370 um map indicate that its emission arises from the interclump medium with densities of the order of 10^3 cm^-3. The warmest gas is located along the ridge of the cloud, close to the ionization front. An LTE approximation indicates that the excitation temperature of the embedded clumps goes up to ~120 K. The non-LTE model suggests that the kinetic temperature at four selected positions cannot exceed 230 K in clumps of density n(H_2)~5x10^5 cm^-3, and that the warm T_k>100 K and dense (n(H_2)>10^4 cm^-3) gas traced by the mid-J 12CO lines represent just about 2% of the bulk of the molecular gas. With the incorporation of high-J molecular lines, we aim to constrain the physical conditions of the dense gas in the central region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 and to determine signatures of the AGN or the starburst contribution. We used the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope to observe the J=4-3 transition of HCN, HNC, and HCO+, as well as the CN N_J=2_{5/2}-1_{3/2} and N_J=3_{5/2}-2_{5/2}, in NGC 1068. We estimate the excitation conditions of HCN, HNC, and CN, based on the line intensity ratios and radiative transfer models. We find that the bulk emission of HCN, HNC, CN, and the high-J HCO+ emerge from dense gas n(H_2)>=10^5 cm^-3). However, the low-J HCO+ lines (dominating the HCO+ column density) trace less dense (n(H_2)<10^5 cm^-3) and colder (T_K<=20 K) gas, whereas the high-J HCO+ emerges from warmer (>30 K) gas than the other molecules. The HCO+ J=4-3 line intensity, compared with the lower transition lines and with the HCN J=4-3 line, support the influence of a local XDR environment. The estimated N(CN)/N(HCN)~1-4 column density ratios are indicative of an XDR/AGN environment with a possible contribution of grain-surface chemistry induced by X-rays or shocks., Comment: Main text: 8 pages, 5 tables, 1 figure. Bright HNC 1--0 emission has been found towards several Seyfert galaxies. This is unexpected since traditionally HNC is a tracer of cold (10 K) gas, and the molecular gas of luminous galaxies like Seyferts is thought to have bulk kinetic temperatures surpassing 50 K. In this work we aim to distinguish the cause of the bright HNC and to model the physical conditions of the HNC and HCN emitting gas. We have used SEST, JCMT and IRAM 30m telescopes to observe HNC 3-2 and HCN 3-2 line emission in a selection of 5 HNC-luminous Seyfert galaxies. We estimate and discuss the excitation conditions of HCN and HNC in NGC 1068, NGC 3079, NGC 2623 and NGC 7469, based on the observed 3-2/1-0 line intensity ratios. We also observed CN 1-0 and 2-1 emission and discuss its role in photon and X-ray dominated regions. HNC 3-2 was detected in 3 galaxies (NGC 3079, NGC 1068 and NGC 2623). HCN 3-2 was detected in NGC 3079, NGC 1068 and NGC 1365. The HCN 3-2/1-0 ratio is lower than 0.3 only in NGC 3079, whereas the HNC 3-2/1-0 ratio is larger than 0.3 only in NGC 2623. The HCN/HNC 1-0 and 3-2 line ratios are larger than unity in all the galaxies. The HCN/HNC 3-2 line ratio is lower than unity only in NGC 2623, similar to Arp 220, Mrk 231 and NGC 4418. In three of the galaxies the HNC emissions emerge from gas of densities n<10^5 cm^3, where the chemistry is dominated by ion-neutral reactions. In NGC 1068 the emission of HNC emerges from lower (<10^5 cm^3) density gas than HCN (>10^5 cm^3). Instead, the emissions of HNC and HCN emerge from the same gas in NGC 3079. The observed HCN/HNC and CN/HCN line ratios favor a PDR scenario, rather than an XDR one. However, the N(HNC)/N(HCN) column density ratios obtained for NGC 3079 can be found only in XDR environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A.
