9. Evaluation of Classroom Teaching Innovations at the University of Seville.

Abstract

This study described and compared 12 classroom teaching innovations that were introduced at the University of Seville, Spain, during academic year 1999-2000. Students completed the Student Demographic Questionnaire (SDQ), and their perceptions of the classroom learning environment were assessed with the Evaluation of University Teaching Activities Questionnaire developed for this study and completed by 665 students. In addition, university classroom innovation practice was analyzed through teaching plans, observations, and semi-structured interviews with 84 students. Significant differences were found in several factors of student biography. Findings shed some light on the neglected theme of the teaching practice of university faculty. Research results and implications for improving university teaching innovation are discussed. Four appendixes contain the questionnaire and supplemental information. (SLD)

Abstract

This study explored whether university students' perceptions of the social environment are influenced by professors' classroom teaching innovations. Data from 559 university students in 13 innovative disciplines within 11 schools at the University of Seville, Spain, were used. First, factor analytic procedures with varimax rotation were used to generate a seven-factor solution that accounted for 59% of the variance. Second, using hierarchical linear modeling, it was found that the average student's perception of interest is also influenced by prior knowledge. Implications for further research on university teaching and innovation assessment are discussed. Two appendixes contain sample questionnaires. (SLD)

11. Student Satisfaction in the University: A Case Study from Spain.

Abstract

A quality assurance case study was conducted at the School of Business Studies of the University of Seville, Spain. This study explored the degree of satisfaction expressed by students, investigating the teaching performance of each university lecturer, subject program design, characteristics of the teaching center, issues related to the University, profile of the student, and the importance attached by students to each component of the teaching service. A total of 23,585 questionnaires were completed, with each module considered a separate questionnaire. These responses represented 1,560 students. Findings indicate that the instrument demonstrated validity in measuring different levels of student satisfaction. Findings also indicate that the clarity of the lecturers' explanations and the extent to which they are able to lighten these and make them accessible to students are the most significant determinants of overall student satisfaction. 33. Influence of alongslope processes on modern turbidite systems and canyons in the Alboran Sea (southwestern Mediterranean)

Abstract

This is an interdisciplinary study that combines morphoseismics, sedimentology and numerical modelling to elucidate at different scales of resolution the influence of alongslope processes on the turbidite systems (TSs) and canyons in the Alboran Sea (southwestern Mediterranean). Nine TSs are mapped in the Spanish margin (La Linea, Guadiaro, Baños, Torrenueva, Fuengirola, Salobreña, Sacratif, Calahonda and Almeria) and two in the Alboran Ridge (Piedra Escuela and Al-Borani). In the Moroccan margin, there are only two canyons (Ceuta and Nekor). Distinctive morphoseismic and sedimentological signatures from TSs and canyons have enabled three regional models of alongslope influence to be distinguished: a) Alongslope processes are dominant. This scenario characterizes the canyons of the Moroccan margin. The diagnostic signature is the lack of leveed channels and lobes at the Ceuta and Nekor Canyon mouths. b) Different degrees of interplay exist between alongslope and downslope processes. This scenario occurs in the TSs of the western Spanish margin. Here, the alongslope influence on TSs (La Linea, Guadiaro, Baños, Torrenueva and Fuengirola) is evidenced by the lack of overbank deposits in the La Linea and Guadiaro Canyons and an alongslope trend in the morpho-architecture of the channelized lobes and in the textural distribution of canyon/channel deposits (mass-flow deposits and turbidites). Both signatures indicate sandier TSs as well as Bouma turbidite sequences lacking the finest levels towards the Strait of Gibraltar. Local intercalations of contourites are also present in the Guadiaro lobe deposits. c) Downslope processes are dominant. This scenario characterizes the TSs of the eastern and central Spanish margin and Alboran Ridge. There, TSs seem to be controlled solely by the characteristics of the downslope gravity flows that transport sediment. Abstract

A particle-tracking method has been used to simulate the dispersion of non-conservative radionuclides in the sea. Three dimensional turbulent diffusion and the interactions between water, suspended matter and bottom sediments are simulated using a stochastic method. Kinetic transfer coefficients, as in finite difference models, are used to describe the transfers between the liquid and solid phases. Deposition of suspended matter and erosion of sediment are also included in the model. The method has been applied to simulate the dispersion of 137Cs and 239,240Pu in the English Channel and the results have been compared with those of a finite difference model. The results from both techniques are, in general, in good agreement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
