1. Thermo-mechanical behaviour of a tungsten first wall in HiPER laser fusion scenarios

Abstract

The behaviour of a tungsten first wall is studied under the irradiation conditions predicted for the different operation scenarios of the European Laser fusion project HiPER, which is based on direct drive targets and an evacuated dry wall chamber. The scenarios correspond to different stages in the development of a nuclear fusion reactor, from proof of principle (bunch mode facility) to economic feasibility (pre-commercial power plant). This work constitutes a quantitative study to evaluate the first wall performance under realistic irradiation conditions in the different scenarios. We calculated the radiation fluxes assuming the geometrical configurations reported so far for HiPER. Then, we calculated the irradiation-induced first wall temperature evolution and the thermo-mechanical response of the material. The results indicate that the first wall will plastically deform up to a few microns underneath the surface. Continuous operation in power plant leads to fatigue failure with crack generation and growth. Finally, the crack propagation and the minimum W thickness required to fulfil the first wall protection role is studied. The response of tungsten as first wall material as well as its main limitations will be discussed for the HiPER scenarios.

Abstract

The European HiPER project aims to demonstrate commercial viability of inertial fusion energy within the following two decades. This goal requires an extensive Research & Development program on materials for different applications (e.g., first wall, structural components and final optics). In this paper we will discuss our activities in the framework of HiPER to develop materials studies for the different areas of interest. The chamber first wall will have to withstand explosions of at least 100 MJ at a repetition rate of 5-10 Hz. If direct drive targets are used, a dry wall chamber operated in vacuum is preferable. In this situation the major threat for the wall stems from ions. For reasonably low chamber radius (5-10 m) new materials based on W and C are being investigated, e.g., engineered surfaces and nanostructured materials. Structural materials will be subject to high fluxes of neutrons leading to deleterious effects, such as, swelling. Low activation advanced steels as well as new nanostructured materials are being investigated. The final optics lenses will not survive the extreme ion irradiation pulses originated in the explosions. Therefore, mitigation strategies are being investigated. In addition, efforts are being carried out in understanding optimized conditions to minimize the loss of optical properties by neutron and gamma irradiation.

3. Silica final lens performance in laser fusion facilities: HiPER and LIFE

Abstract

Nowadays, the projects LIFE (Laser Inertial Fusion Energy) in USA and HiPER (High Power Laser Energy Research) in Europe are the most advanced ones to demonstrate laser fusion energy viability. One of the main points of concern to properly achieve ignition is the performance of the final optics (lenses) under the severe irradiation conditions that take place in fusion facilities. In this paper, we calculate the radiation fluxes and doses as well as the radiation-induced temperature enhancement and colour centre formation in final lenses assuming realistic geometrical configurations for HiPER and LIFE. On these bases, the mechanical stresses generated by the established temperature gradients are evaluated showing that from a mechanical point of view lenses only fulfill specifications if ions resulting from the imploding target are mitigated. The absorption coefficient of the lenses is calculated during reactor startup and steady-state operation. The obtained results evidence the necessity of new solutions to tackle ignition problems during the startup process for HiPER. Finally, we evaluated the effect of temperature gradients on focal length changes and lens surface deformations. In summary, we discuss the capabilities and weak points of silica lenses and propose alternatives to overcome predictable problems.

Abstract

Extended stability study of acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) and water-soluble SO3-Ph-BTP. Characterization by using Quantitative Raman spectroscopy. Evaluation of irradiated aqueous phase of TRU stripping of EURO-GANEX process was studied. Higher resistance of AHA and SO3-Ph-BTP when they are irradiated together. In this work, we present a study which tackles the stability of molecules involved in EURO-GANEX aqueous phase, the acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) and the sulphonated BTP (SO3-Ph-BTP), taking into account factors such as the known AHA hydrolysis, acidity of the media, and the radiolysis of AHA and SO3-Ph-BTP. To better understand the system, the radiolysis of AHA and SO3-Ph-BTP in HNO3 has been studied first separately, at low doses (up to 50 kGy) compared with those expected for the recycled organic phase. The concentration after exposure to gamma radiation of AHA and its hydrolysis products, as well as of SO3-Ph-BTP, was measured for the first time by using Quantitative Raman Spectroscopy (QRS), showing that this technique can be used as a reliable tool for assessing the stability of these systems. In addition, the proton concentration and extraction efficiency of each assay were monitored and assessed. Our study extends the knowledge about the resistance to radiation of extractants involved in the EURO-GANEX aqueous phase, showing greater robustness when both molecules are irradiated together, and contributes not only to design reliable simulation strategies of the long-term EURO-GANEX process performance, but also to develop analysing tools for further processes implementations. Abstract

We study the influence of grain boundaries on radiation-induced vacancies, as well as, on the hydrogen (H) behavior in tungsten (W) samples with different grain sizes in the temperature range from 300 K to 573 K, both experimentally and by computer simulations. For this purpose, coarse-grained and nanostructured W samples were sequentially irradiated with carbon (C) and H ions at energies of 665 keV and 170 keV, respectively. A first set of the implanted samples was annealed at 473 K and a second set at 573 K. Object kinetic Monte Carlo simulations were performed to account for experimental outcomes. Results show that the number of vacancies for nanostructured W is always larger than for single crystal W samples in the whole studied temperature range and that the number of vacancies is only reduced in samples with a large density of grain boundaries and at temperatures high enough to activate the vacancy motion (around 573 K). Results also indicate that the migration of H along vacancy free grain boundaries is more effective than along the bulk, and that the retained H is trapped in vacancies located within the grains. These results are used to explain the experimental outcomes.

Abstract

The H trapping and mobility in nanostructured W grain boundaries has been studied by combining experimental and density functional theory (DFT) data. Experimental results show that nanostructured W coatings with a columnar structure and a large number of (110)/(211) interfaces retain more H than the coarsed grained W tungsten samples do. To investigate the possible influence of grain boundaries on the H retention, a complete energetic analysis has been done in a semi-coherent W(110)/W(112) interface built by DFT. Our results show that this kind of non-coherent interface largely attract points defects (both H atom and metallic monovacancy separately) and that the presence of these interfaces contribute to decrease the migration energy of the H atoms with respect to the bulk. When both W monovacancy and H atom are introduced together into the system, the HV complex results the most stable configuration suggesting an explanation to the H retention in the GB observed experimentally.

Abstract

We report on the influence of sample microstructure and of irradiation conditions on the H behaviour in Tungsten (W). For this purpose, commercial coarse grained (CGW) and nanostructured W (NW) samples were implanted with (i) H at room temperature (RT), (ii) sequentially with C and H at RT, and (iii) simultaneously (co-implanted) with C and H at RT. To study the possible effect of implantation temperature on H behaviour, a CGW sample and a NW sample were sequentially implanted with C at RT and with H at 673 K. The H and C implantation fluence was 5×1020 cm−2 and the implantation energies were 160 keV for H and 650 keV for C which are above the displacement damage threshold. Scanning electron microscopy images show that nanostructured samples consist of columns with an average diameter of about 100 nm. These nanocolumns are stable under the studied implantations conditions. Moreover, blistering is absent in all studied samples. X-ray diffraction data illustrate that all samples are mono-phase (α-W phase) and that none of the implantations led to the appearance of secondary phases. Resonant nuclear reaction analysis data show that the H retention in NW samples is larger than in CGW and that synergistic effect has a significant influence on the H retention in CGW samples but not in NW samples.

32. Experimental Study of the Phenomenology of Spallation Neutrons in a Large Lead Block

Abstract

%PS211 %title \\ \\The purpose of PS211 is to determine how neutrons, produced by spallation inside a large Lead volume are slowed down by undergoing a very large number of scatterings, losing each time a small fraction ($\sim$ 1\%) of their kinetic energy. The focus is in determining the probability for a spallation neutron produced at an energy of several MeV or more, to survive capture on Lead resonances and to reach resonance energies of materials to be transmuted, such as 5.6 eV for $^{99}$Tc. This process, of Adiabatic Resonance Crossing, involves a subtle interplay between the capture resonances of the Lead medium and of selected impurities. This phenomenology of spallation neutrons in a large Lead volume, is the physics foundation of the Fast Energy Amplifier proposed by C. Rubbia, and could open up new possibilities in the incineration of long-lived nuclear waste such as Actinides or Fission Fragments (e.g. $^{99}$Tc, $^{129}$I, etc.).\\ \\334 tons of high purity Lead, installed in t7, are exposed to a primary proton beam of 3.5~GeV/c or 2.5~GeV/c (10$^{7}$ to 10$^{10}$ protons per PS shot) in the fast extraction mode, and 2.5 to 0.6 GeV/c in the slow extraction mode (10$^{3}$ protons per PS shot). Neutron energy spectra are measured with various techniques over an energy dynamic range of 8 orders of magnitudes. Both prompt and delayed $\gamma$ measurements are performed to study the capture rates in various elements of interest. The correlation between neutron capture time and energy is determined. A pneumatic system ("rabbit") allows to perform delayed $\gamma$ measurements of short-lived daughters activity, during the 14.4 seconds available between two consecutive PS shots. In addition, various types of standard activation measurements are performed.\\ \\Data taking started in April 1996 and was completed by July 1997. The Collaboration is now mainly engaged in a large analysis effort. \\ \\

Abstract

A background roughly two orders of magnitude higher than tolerable was found in the n_TOF facility at CERN during the first measurements [1]. This note describes a series of additional measurements performed in the n_TOF experimental area to study the origin and the characteristics of the background. The program of these measurements was determined taking into account the results from the simulations carried out by the EET group [2]. A first phase of measurements confirmed what was expected from the simulations, namely that the dominant source of background was due to neutrons generated by negative muon capture. Actions to reduce the background were taken according to the results from both measurements and simulations. An iron shielding wall 3.2 m thick was then placed in between the sweeping magnet and the second collimator, with the purpose of stopping most of the muons. In a second phase of measurements, results showed that the additional shielding reduced the main component of the background by about a factor of 30.

Abstract

The elemental distribution for as-received (AR), H implanted (AI) and post-implanted annealed (A) Eurofer and ODS-Eurofer steels has been characterized by means of micro Particle Induced X-ray Emission (µ-PIXE), micro Elastic Recoil Detection (µ-ERD) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). The temperature and time-induced H diffusion has been analyzed by Resonance Nuclear Reaction Analysis (RNRA), Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy (TDS), ERDA and SIMS techniques. µ-PIXE measurements point out the presence of inhomogeneities in the Y distribution for ODS-Eurofer samples. RNRA and SIMS experiments evidence that hydrogen easily outdiffuses in these steels even at room temperature. ERD data show that annealing at temperatures as low as 300 °C strongly accelerates the hydrogen diffusion process, driving out up to the 90% of the initial hydrogen.

Abstract

The n_TOF facility at CERN has been designed for the measurement of neutron capture, fission and (n, xn) cross-sections with high accuracy. This requires a flexible and-due to the high instantaneous neutron flux-almost dead time free data acquisition system. A scalable and versatile data solution has been designed based on 8-bit flash-ADCs with sampling rates up to 2 GHz and 8 Mbyte memory buffer. The software is written in C and C++ and is running on PCs equipped with RedHat Linux.
