The demand for LCA studies on agri-food value chains from South contexts is growing, but the application of LCA in these contexts is challenging. An initiative has been launched to formalize best practices based on the field experience from LCA experts for South contexts. Specificities of the application of LCA in these conditions relate to the diversity and complexity of production conditions and systems, the limited awareness and capacities in LCA as environmental assessment tool by stakeholders, the lack of specific background data, the scarcity and often low-quality of statistic data on studied systems, and the limits imposed to LCA commissioned from abroad. The guidelines in preparation will mainly focus on practical aspects of goal and scope definition, data collection and partnership, inventory and interpretation for key stakeholders.

Food security, jobs, ecological transition of agricultural production models and consumption patterns... Agroecology could be one of the solutions to meet the future challenges of humanity. Part of the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals, it requires a lasting commitment from all of us. To meet the food and economic needs of growing rural and urban communities, fulfil increasingly demanding consumer requirements, conserve natural resources and adapt to climate change, we have to find new ways of agricultural production. Over the last decade, CIRAD and AFD have conducted experiments in agroecological transitions with farmers, researchers, development agents and policymakers in many countries of the Global South. In this book, they reflect on the future of agroecology as a way for agriculture in the developing world to adapt to global changes and they examine the conditions necessary for a successful agroecological transition.

While the world is facing unprecedented transitions and threats we need to deeply rethink the relationships between water and energy use, food production, and ecosystem protection. This includes the development and deployment of ambitious, out‐of‐the‐box solutions towards sustainable development. This paper is based upon recent discussions before and during the 2nd World Irrigation Forum in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This paper takes stock of current knowledge and analyses the most recent trends in water, irrigation and the environment. It discusses the requirements for strategic approaches and the contributions of irrigation and drainage to Sustainable Development Goals. Firstly, we concentrated on renewed and more balanced relationships between water, energy, food and ecosystems in the context of irrigation and drainage management. Secondly, we assessed the positive and negative impact of agricultural water use in order to demonstrate and improve its performance. Given exacerbated competition and water resource scarcity, a better understanding of the positive effects and valuable ecosystem services provided by irrigation and drainage systems could pave the way to maximizing benefits and safeguarding the environment. Lastly, we tried to address the role of stakeholders in irrigation governance. This includes active contribution to policy‐making and planning, incentives, and most importantly, capacity development.

Objectives: Water inventory and agri-food LCA databases do not fully support the application of LCIA methods assessing the impacts of consumptive and degradative water use (so-called water availability as proposed by Boulay and colleagues), and are not appropriate for LCA-based ecodesign of cropping systems. For herbaceous crops, the FAO Aquacrop model constitutes a relevant and operational model for estimating field water and salt flows, but no dedicated model is available to-date for perennials. The objectives of this work were (i) to develop a simple and operational model for the estimation of field water and salt flows, aiming at discriminating practices for all types of cropping systems including perennials, (ii) to test and discuss its feasibility in a demanding case study. Methods: After a review of modelling approaches, we elaborated a tailored model, called the E.T. model, for the inventory of field water and salt flows for use in LCA of cropping systems. The model has a daily water and salts balance, accounting for specific soil, climate and agricultural practices. We explored the model relevance and robustness in a case study of a mandarin crop grown in Morocco, based on farm primary data. We compared the model outputs with the literature and water databases, and calculated water availability impacts. Results: The E.T. model is simple and operational on perennial crops, and estimates evaporation, transpiration, deep percolating water and runoff water, in terms of volume and salinity. Its outputs compared well with literature and measurements, and allowed the simulation of scenarios of agricultural practices. A comparison with crop water consumption estimates from databases highlighted a difference of up to 60%. E.T. model outputs are water elementary flows and salinity and can be used for assessing the impacts of consumptive and degradative water use in LCA. Conclusions: The E.T. model supports the calculation of water availability impact while discriminating agricultural practices. Its domain of validity and accuracy could be extended based on recommendations from the authors.

Le cycle de l'eau est profondément bouleversé par le changement climatique, qui induit des modifications progressives et parfois marquées des hydrosystèmes et des processus hydrologiques naturels. Les sociétés et les acteurs tentent de s'adapter afin de maîtriser et de contrôler leurs relations à l'eau. Cependant les scénarios actuels montrent une accélération dans l'intensité de cette variabilité. Nous présentons dans ce chapitre une sélection de travaux de recherche relatifs au changement climatique sur trois des enjeux majeurs dans le domaine des ressources en eau et de leur gestion: la caractérisation des changements, l'adaptation aux changements et l'adaptation de la gouvernance face aux changements. Les études présentées ont été mises en oeuvre en partenariat essentiellement avec des organismes du Sud, qui sont associés, voire souvent leaders des projets et des publications.

L'analyse de cycle de vie est l'une des méthodologies d'évaluation environnementale les plus complètes. Elle permet d'évaluer les impacts environnementaux des activités anthropiques tout au long d'une filière. Sa mise en oeuvre soulève de nombreuses questions scientifiques. Dans le cas des système de culture tropicaux, les chercheurs travaillent sur la compréhension et la modélisation des émissions vers f environnement en fonction de la diversité des milieux et des systèmes. Ils travaillent également sur les liens entre ces émissions et les impacts. Les analyses de cycle de vie des systèmes de cultures révèlent que l'impact sur le changement climatique varie en fonction des cultures, des milieux et des pratiques. L'analyse de cycle de vie permet d'orienter les modes de production pour diminuer leurs impacts environnementaux. Mais les choix ne sont pas toujours évidents.

L'application d'eau d'irrigation et d'engrais azotés (N) en excès par rapport à la demande des cultures réduit la profitabilité et a de multiples impacts négatifs sur l'environnement. La dynamique de l'azote dans les agrosystèmes est extrêmement complexe, et des modèles mécanistes de culture sont souvent nécessaires pour quantifier l'impact de pratiques de gestion améliorées sur la réduction des pertes en azote. Cette étude utilise la méthodologie de l'Analyse du Cycle de Vie (ACV) combinée à la modélisation mécaniste pour quantifier les bénéfices environnementaux d'une gestion améliorée de l'eau et des fertilisants azotés par des producteurs de canne à sucre, dans une étude de cas à Pongola, Afrique du Sud. Nous avons comparé un scénario de base représentatif des pratiques courantes et intuitives des producteurs en termes d'irrigation, à deux scénarios supplémentaires représentant des pratiques de gestion plus rationnelles de l'eau, et de l'eau et des engrais, respectivement. Les résultats montrent qu'une meilleure gestion de l'eau et de l'azote peut générer une réduction de 20% de la consommation en énergie non-renouvelable, avec des rendements maintenus voire améliorés. Les émissions totales de GES peuvent potentiellement être réduites de 25%. La réduction des applications d'engrais, rendue possible par le moindre lessivage de l'azote sous irrigation raisonnée, résulte en de fortes réductions de ces deux catégories d'impacts. La consommation totale en eau est similaire entre scénario de base et scénarios de meilleure gestion de l'eau; cependant l'utilisation de l'eau de pluie est plus efficiente avec les irrigations raisonnées, réduisant ainsi les besoins d'extraction de la ressource. Par la prise en compte simultanée d'impacts environnementaux multiples, la combinaison de l'ACV et de la modélisation mécaniste de culture montre un potentiel pour identifier les pratiques améliorées et pour développer un accompagnement en éco-conception de systèmes.

L'irrigation en Chine du Nord souffre d'un déclin des ressources en eaux souterraines et de problèmes institutionnels. En réponse, les autorités ont développé des mesures qui incluent l'allocation et la tarification différenciées de la ressource, des droits d'accès individuels et collectifs, une tarification par paliers, l'accès à l'eau par prépaiement, et un suivi en temps réel des consommations et de la ressource. Ce papier analyse ce modèle alternatif de gestion et ses implications sur les systèmes et les exploitations, mobilisant l'analyse institutionnelle, économique et technique du cas sous étude dans le comté de Qinqxu, dans le nord de la Chine. Les résultats montrent que le système de prépaiement aide à résoudre les problèmes de recouvrement, de resquille (free-riding), d'agence et de surexploitation de la ressource. Tous les usages sont prépayés et donc collectés. Cependant, alors que la plupart des couts d'opération et de maintenance sont couverts, les couts de personnel sont couverts dans un seul cas seulement, en raison du bas prix de l'eau. Les problèmes d'agence sont aussi traités grâce au suivi continu des usages et de la ressource. La valeur d'usage de l'eau est élevée comparée à son prix, en raison de rendements en maïs élevés et à un usage raisonnable de l'irrigation d'appoint. Une augmentation du prix de l'eau est donc potentiellement envisageable, si nécessaire. Ce papier montre que ce nouveau système de gestion à l'échelle du comté reflète finalement les réformes de la finance rurale en Chine, et le réalignement des institutions locales de gestion de l'eau avec les niveaux administratifs existants. Food LCA should include salinization. Salinization is a threat not only to arable land but also to freshwater resources. Nevertheless, salinization impacts have been rarely and partially included in LCA so far. First, a comprehensive overview of salinization mechanisms is presented and highlights its multiple causes, which affect soil and water, and ultimately human health, ecosystems and resources. Second, adopting the ILCD analysis grid, we analyzed the scientific relevance and accuracy of existing published methods addressing salinization in LCA. Although interesting, these seminal approaches are often incomplete with regards to both the salinization pathways they cover and their geographical validity. Third, we analyzed how to consistently integrate salinization within the methodological frameworks for impacts modeling in LCA, and raised questions to address towards a comprehensive integration of salinization.

In Asia, many dams are currently managed to satisfy society's immediate needs: power generation and food production. Environmental criteria are often overlooked and traditional reservoir management often leads to alteration of the natural flow regimes, in turn leading to degradation of river-dependant ecosystems. However, the idea of maintaining a flow that resembles the natural flow regime in rivers is increasingly recognized as important, but it potentially conflicts with food and power production objectives. Therefore, a tradeoff analysis among these three objectives could help generating efficient use of the resource and preserving ecosystem services. The management of Kinda dam, in the Panlaung River basin (central part of Myanmar) is taken as a case study. Completed in 1990, it was designed as a multipurpose dam. Its catchment area is about 2,240 km2, with a power generation capacity 165 GWh/year. It can potentially deliver water to an irrigable area of 70,000 ha. This research first estimates the environmental flow (EF) requirements in the river using a set of Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) to characterize the natural and altered flow regimes using IHA parameters grouped into five categories, i.e. magnitude, duration, timing, frequency and rate of change. IHA software was used to evaluate the alteration in flow regimes using the daily flow data series from 1961 to 1981 for the pre-dam period and from 2002 to 2011 for the post-dam period. We then simulate the operation of the reservoir under alternative objectives using HEC-ResSim model. The impact of water availability and management in the irrigated areas are evaluated with the help of CROPWAT, based on available climatic data and cropping patterns. Contrasted water management scenarios were evaluated in order to quantify those tradeoffs: (a) existing reservoir management rules and irrigation demand, (b) modified reservoir management rules in order to optimize power generation, and unaltered irrigation management, (c) scenario (b) with an additional constraint to maintain EF; (d) modified reservoir management rules in order to maximize food production; (e) scenario (d) with an additional constrain to maintain EF levels at 25, 50, 75 and 100% required EF ; Imposing EF constraints result in differentiated impacts on the two main sectors: negative for the rice production and positive for power generation (as compared to current rules that gives priority to irrigation). At basin level, lost in agricultural revenues could partially be compensated by higher electricity production. However, the net effect is negative. This correspond to a loss of 64 USD/ha of irrigated plots (i.e. a loss of around 1,000,000 USD/year) while the power generation could increase generating some additional revenues (around 400,000 USD/year). To conclude, this method allows estimating the opportunity cost of EF in Panlaung River basin. However, it does not allow comparing these costs to their potential benefits (biodiversity and diverse use values such as fisheries). Besides, with potential gainers and losers, policy makers still need to decide who would have to bear these costs (possibly via negotiated monetary compensations across sectors). (Texte integral)
