Abstract

This paper presents how the online tool GREW-MATCH can be used to make queries and visualise data from existing semantically annotated corpora. A dedicated syntax is available to construct simple to complex queries and execute them against a corpus. Such queries give transverse views of the annotated data, these views can help for checking the consistency of annotations in one corpus or across several corpora. GREW-MATCH can then be seen as an error mining tool: when inconsistencies are detected, it helps finding the sentences which should be fixed. Finally, GREW-MATCH can also be used as a side tool to assist annotation tasks helping to find annotation examples in existing corpora to be compared to the data to be annotated.

Abstract

This article describes a method to build syntactical dependencies starting from the phrase structure parsing process. The goal is to obtain all the information needed for a detailled semantical analysis. Interaction Grammars are used for parsing; the saturation of polarities which is the core of this formalism can be mapped to dependency relation. Formally, graph patterns are used to express the set of constraints which control dependency creations.

Abstract

This article proposes a method to extract dependency structures from phrase-structure level parsing with Interaction Grammars. Interaction Grammars are a formalism which expresses interactions among words using a polarity system. Syntactical composition is led by the saturation of polarities. Interactions take place between constituents, but as grammars are lexicalized, these interactions can be translated at the level of words. Dependency relations are extracted from the parsing process: every dependency is the consequence of a polarity saturation. The dependency relations we obtain can be seen as a refinement of the usual dependency tree. Generally speaking, this work sheds new light on links between phrase structure and dependency parsing.

Abstract

Interaction Grammar (IG) is a grammatical formalism based on the notion of polarity. Polarities express the resource sensitivity of natural languages by modelling the distinction between saturated and unsaturated syntactic structures. Syntactic composition is represented as a chemical reaction guided by the saturation of polarities. It is expressed in a model-theoretic framework where grammars are constraint systems using the notion of tree description and parsing appears as a process of building tree description models satisfying criteria of saturation and minimality.

International audience; This paper describes the continuation of a project that aims at establishing an interoperable annotation scheme for quantification phenomena as part of the ISO suite of standards for semantic annotation, known as the Semantic Annotation Framework. After a break, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the project was relaunched in early 2022 with a second working draft, which deals with certain issues in the annotation of quantification in a more satisfactory way than the original first working draft.

International audience; The paper brings to the fore some advantages to first develop a new treebank in Surface-Syntactic Universal Dependencies (SUD) annotation scheme, even if the goal is to obtain a UD treebank. Theoretical benefits of SUD are presented, as well as UD-compatible SUD innovations. The twoway UD , SUD conversion is explained, as well as the possibility to customize the conversion for a given language. The paper concludes by a practical guide for the development of a SUD treebank.

Abstract

International audience; This paper details experiments we performed on the Universal Dependencies 2.7 corpora in order to investigate the dominant word order in the available languages. For this purpose, we used a graph rewriting tool, GREW, which allowed us to go beyond the surface annotations and identify the implicit subjects. We first measured the distribution of the six different word orders (SVO, SOV, VSO, VOS, OVS, OSV) in the corpora and investigated when there was a significant difference in the corpora within a given language. Then, we compared the obtained results with information provided in the WALS database (Dryer and Haspelmath, 2013) and inÖstling (2015). Finally, we examined the impact of using a graph rewriting tool for this task. The tools and resources used for this research are all freely available.

International audience; This paper presents the results of a mathematical and linguistic study of nonprojective syntactic dependencies in French corpora annotated according to two dependency syntax formats: Universal Dependencies (UD) and Surface Syntactic Universal Dependencies (SUD). This study highlights the very local character of the configurations of two crossing dependencies, which is one of the ways to characterize non-projectivity. It also highlights four main linguistic sources of non-projectivity : clitic climbing, deep extraction, dependency length minimization and pairs of distant dependent words .; Cet article présente les résultats d'une étude mathématique et linguistique des dépendances syntaxiques non projectives dans des corpus du français annotés selon deux formats de syntaxe en dépendance : Universal Dependencies (UD) et Surface Syntactic Universal Dependencies (SUD). Cette étude met en évidence le caractère très local des configurations de croisement de deux dépendances qui est une des façons de caractériser la non-projectivité. Elle met aussi en évidence quatre sources linguistiques principales de la non-projectivité : la montée de clitiques, l'extraction profonde, la minimisation de la longueur des dépendances et les couples de mots dépendants distants.

Whether these cues can support the development of filial preferences has not been adequately tested. Using a two-choice paradigm, we assessed the ability of 3-8-day-old pups to orient selectively to the mother versus an unfamiliar female, either spontaneously or after odour conditioning. In experiment 1, nonconditioned pups roamed indifferently over the mother and an unfamiliar female. In experiment 2, pups conditioned to a neutral odorant while nursing or with the mammary pheromone became attracted by the odorant. In experiment 3, pups that had learned the odorant while nursing oriented for longer to any female carrying it, but the unscented mother and a scented unfamiliar female were equally attractive. Finally, in experiment 4, pups that had learned the odorant paired with the mammary pheromone showed a preference for their scented mother, but not systematically for a scented unfamiliar female; furthermore, they were equally attracted by the unscented mother and a scented unfamiliar female. In sum, pups did not spontaneously evince an olfactory preference for the mother when opposed to an unfamiliar female, although they seemed able to detect individual maternal odours. In fact, they appeared to react to both species-specific cues and individual cues that they had learned, and their responses depended on their degree of familiarity with the cues and on the context. The mammary pheromone by itself might act as both a releasing and a reinforcing signal in these early socially oriented behaviours. Previous investigations have suggested that these cues are released from the doe's abdominal surface from structures located around the nipple. We tested pups with samples of various cutaneous tissues or fluids collected from lactating females to determine the location of the source of the odour cues. After finding that the nipples from lactating does were more attractive than those of virgin females, we conducted three experiments using skin samples collected at increasing distance from the nipples, dermal and mammary tissues taken below the nipples, and milk collected at different levels of the mammary pathway. These different substrates were assessed for their ability to elicit searching/grasping responses in pups. Efficient odour cues were released only from the nipples, whereas the dermal or mammary tissues sampled beneath the nipples were behaviourally inefficient, and milk became behaviourally active only after it had flown through the nipple. These results suggest dual exocrine sources of active factors from the nipple of lactating rabbits: cues released within the nipple that render milk behaviourally active and cues distributed over the nipple epidermis. International audience; This paper describes an effort to improve the consistency of two French corpora annotated with the Universal Dependencies (UD) scheme. The Universal Dependencies project aims at building a syntactic dependency scheme which allows similar analyses for several different languages. We improved the annotations of the two French corpora to render them closer to the UD scheme, and evaluated the changes done to the corpora in terms of closeness to the UD scheme as well as of internal corpus consistency.; Cet article décrit l'effort d'amélioration de deux corpus du français annotés en dépendances syntaxiques, qui s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet Universal Dependencies (UD) qui vise à élaborer un schéma d'annotation syntaxique permettant d'analyser de façon similaire plusieurs langues différentes. International audience; Les corpus annotés occupent une place de plus en plus importante dans le traitement automatique des langues (TAL). Cet ouvrage présente la réécriture de graphes, un modèle de calcul adapté au TAL. Tous les calculs sont vus comme des transformations de graphes. La réécriture se prête bien à la réalisation de ces transformations en permettant d’exprimer directement des règles basées sur des connaissances linguistiques.Il n’y a pas de modèle standard de la réécriture de graphes. Les auteurs ont conçu un modèle adapté spécifiquement au TAL. Ils proposent le système GREW, un outil utilisé pour des applications à large échelle (analyse syntaxique, passage d’une annotation syntaxique à une annotation sémantique, etc.).

International audience; The paradigm of Graph Rewriting is used very little in the field of Natural Language Processing. But graphs are a natural way of representing the deep syntax and the semantics of natural languages. Deep syntax is an abstraction of syntactic dependencies towards semantics in the form of graphs and there is a compact way of representing the semantics in an underspecified logical framework also with graphs. Then, Graph Rewriting reconciles efficiency with linguistic readability for producing representations at some linguistic level by transformation of a neighbor level: from raw text to surface syntax, from surface syntax to deep syntax, from deep syntax to underspecified logical semantics and conversely.

Abstract

Semantic Annotation of the French Treebank using Modular Graph Rewriting. We propose to annotate the French Treebank with semantic dependencies in the framework of DMRS starting from an annotation with surface syntactic dependencies and using modular graph rewriting. The article presents some new results related to the rewriting calculus: the use of rules to make a link with lexicons, especially with the lexicon of verbs Dicovalence, and the introduction of filters to discard inconsistent annotations at some computation steps. It also presents new results related to the rewriting system itself: the system has a larger coverage (causative constructions, rising verbs, ...) and the order between modules has been studied in a more systematic way. This system has been experimented on the whole French Treebank with the prototype GREW, which implements the used rewriting calculus., Nous proposons d'annoter le French Treebank à l'aide de dépendances sémantiques dans le cadre de la DMRS en partant d'une annotation en dépendances syntaxiques de surface et en utilisant la réécriture modulaire de graphes. L'article présente un certain nombre d'avancées concernant le calcul de réécriture utilisé : l'utilisation de règles pour faire le lien avec des lexiques, en particulier le lexique des verbes de Dicovalence, et l'introduction de filtres pour écarter à certaines étapes les annotations incohérentes. Il présente aussi des avancées dans le système de réécriture lui-même, qui a une plus large couverture (constructions causatives, verbes à montée, ...) et dont l'ordre des modules a été étudié de façon plus systématique. Abstract

International audience; Leopar {http://leopar.loria.fr) is a parser for natural languages which is based on the formalism of Interaction Grammars (IG). The parsing principle (called "electrostatic parsing") consists in neutralizing opposite polarities: a positive polarity corresponds to an available linguistic feature and a negative one to an expected feature. The structures used in IG are underspecified syntactic trees decorated with polarities and called Polarized Tree Descriptions.

International audience; We propose to annotate the French Treebank with semantic dependencies in the framework of DMRS starting from an annotation with surface syntactic dependencies and using modular graph rewriting. This system has been experimented on the whole French Treebank with the prototype which implements the rewriting calculus.

Abstract

National audience; LEOPAR est un analyseur syntaxique fondé sur le formalisme des grammaires d'interaction, intégré dans une chaîne d'outils visant avant tout à la précision et la couverture linguistique. À l'aide de XMG, il est possible de construire des grammaires de façon semi-automatique à partir de connaissances linguistiques. Ces grammaires sont ensuite ancrées à l'aide de lexiques indépendants d'un quelconque formalisme. Les grammaires ancrées sont enfin utilisées par LEOPAR pour analyser des corpus bruts et produire des sorties sous forme d'arbres syntagmatiques ou de structures de dépendances.
