The low-lying structure of $^{15}$C has been investigated via the neutron-removal $^{16}$C$(d,t)$ reaction. Along with bound neutron sd-shell hole states, unbound p-shell hole states have been firmly confirmed. The excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors of the cross-shell states are an important measure of the $[(p)^{-1}(sd)^{2}]$ neutron configurations in $^{15}$C. Our results show a very good agreement with shell-model calculations using the SFO-tls interaction for $^{15}$C. However, a modification of the $p$-$sd$ and $sd$-$sd$ monopole terms was applied in order to reproduce the $N=9$ isotone $^{17}$O. In addition, the excitation energies and spectroscopic factors have been compared to the first calculations of $^{15}$C with the $ab~ initio$ self-consistent Green's function method employing the NNLO$_{sat}$ interaction. The results show the sensitivity to the size of the $N=8$ shell gap and highlight the need of going beyond the current truncation scheme in the theory.

The reduced transition probabilities $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+,2^+_2)$ in $^{70}$Zn and the full $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+)$ strength up to S$_n$=7.79 MeV in $^{68}$Ni have been determined at the LISE/GANIL facility using the Coulomb-excitation technique at intermediate beam energy on a $^{208}$Pb target. The $\gamma$ rays emitted in-flight were detected with an array of 46 BaF$_2$ crystals. The angles of the deflected nuclei were determined in order to disentangle and extract the Coulomb and nuclear contributions to the excitation of the 2$^+$ states. The measured $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 1432(124) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{70}$Zn falls in the lower part of the published values which clustered either around 1600 or above 2000 e$^2$fm$^4$, while the $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+_2)$ of 53(7) e$^2$fm$^4$ agrees very well with the two published values. The relatively low $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 301(38) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{68}$Ni agrees with previous studies and confirms a local magicity at $Z=28, N=40$. Combining the results of the low-energy spectra of $^{68}$Ni and $^{70}$Zn and their shell-model interpretations, it is interesting to notice that four different shapes (spherical, oblate, prolate and triaxial) are present. Finally, a summed $E2$ strength of only about 150 e$^2$fm$^4$ has been found experimentally at high excitation energy, likely due to proton excitations across the $Z=28$ gap. The experimental distribution of this high-energy $E2$ excitation agrees with SM calculations, but its strength is about two times weaker.

The isovector and isoscalar components of neutron-proton pairing are investigated in the N=Z unstable nuclei of the \textit{fp}-shell through the two-nucleon transfer reaction (p,$^3$He) in inverse kinematics. The combination of particle and gamma-ray detection with radioactive beams of $^{56}$Ni and $^{52}$Fe, produced by fragmentation at the GANIL/LISE facility, made it possible to carry out this study for the first time in a closed and an open-shell nucleus in the \textit{fp}-shell. The transfer cross-sections for ground-state to ground-state (J=0$^+$,T=1) and to the first (J=1$^+$,T=0) state were extracted for both cases together with the transfer cross-section ratios $\sigma$(0$^+$,T=1) /$\sigma$(1$^+$,T=0). They are compared with second-order distorted-wave born approximation (DWBA) calculations. The enhancement of the ground-state to ground-state pair transfer cross-section close to mid-shell, in $^{52}$Fe, points towards a superfluid phase in the isovector channel. For the "deuteron-like" transfer, very low cross-sections to the first (J=1$^+$,T=0) state were observed both for \Ni\phe\, and \Fe\phe\, and are related to a strong hindrance of this channel due to spin-orbit effect. No evidence for an isoscalar deuteron-like condensate is observed., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The unbound proton-rich nuclei $^{16}$F and $^{15}$F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between $^{16}$F-$^{16}$N and $^{15}$F-$^{15}$C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the $nucleon-nucleon$ effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the $s_{1/2}$ orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei $^{16}$N and $^{15}$C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the $n-p$ interaction is preserved between $^{16}$F and $^{16}$N, while a difference of 63\% is measured between the $p-p$ versus $n-n$ interactions in the second excited state of $^{15}$F and $^{15}$C nuclei. Several explanations are proposed.

Classical novae result from thermonuclear explosions producing several $\gamma$-ray emitters which are prime targets for satellites observing in the MeV range. The early 511 keV gamma-ray emission depends critically on the $^{18}$F(p,$\alpha$)$^{15}$O reaction rate which, despite many experimental and theoretical efforts, still remains uncertain. One of the main uncertainties in the $^{18}$F(p,$\alpha$)$^{15}$O reaction rate is the contribution in the Gamow window of interference between sub-threshold $^{19}$Ne states and known broad states at higher energies. Therefore the goal of this work is to clarify the existence and the nature of these sub-threshold states. States in the $^{19}$Ne compound nucleus were studied at the Tandem-ALTO facility using the $^{19}$F($^3$He,t)$^{19}$Ne charge exchange reaction. Tritons were detected with an Enge Split-pole spectrometer while decaying protons or $\alpha$-particles from unbound $^{19}$Ne states were collected, in coincidence, with a double-sided silicon strip detector array. Angular correlations were extracted and constraints on the spin and parity of decaying states established. The coincidence yield at $E_x$ = 6.29 MeV was observed to be high spin, supporting the conclusion that it is indeed a doublet consisting of high spin and low spin components. Evidence for a broad, low spin state was observed around 6 MeV. Branching ratios were extracted for several states above the proton threshold and were found to be consistent with the literature. R-matrix calculations show the relative contribution of sub-threshold states to the astrophysically important energy region above the proton threshold. The levels schemes of $^{19}$Ne and $^{19}$F are still not sufficiently well known and further studies of the analogue assignments are needed. The tentative broad state at 6 MeV may only play a role if the reduced proton width is large.

The first investigation of the single-particle structure of the bound states of 17C, via the d(16C, p) transfer reaction, has been undertaken. The measured angular distributions confirm the spin-parity assignments of 1/2+ and 5/2+ for the excited states located at 217 and 335 keV, respectively. The spectroscopic factors deduced for these states exhibit a marked single-particle character, in agreement with shell model and particle-core model calculations, and combined with their near degeneracy in energy provide clear evidence for the absence of the N = 14 sub-shell closure. The very small spectroscopic factor found for the 3/2+ ground state is consistent with theoretical predictions and indicates that the {\nu}1d3/2 strength is carried by unbound states. With a dominant l = 0 valence neutron configuration and a very low separation energy, the 1/2+ excited state is a one-neutron halo candidate., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

An inelastic $\alpha$-scattering experiment on the unstable $N=Z$, doubly-magic $^{56}$Ni nucleus was performed in inverse kinematics at an incident energy of 50 A.MeV at GANIL. High multiplicity for $\alpha$-particle emission was observed within the limited phase-space of the experimental setup. This observation cannot be explained by means of the statistical-decay model. The ideal classical gas model at $kT$ = 0.4 MeV reproduces fairly well the experimental momentum distribution and the observed multiplicity of $\alpha$ particles corresponds to an excitation energy around 96 MeV. The method of distributed $m\alpha$-decay ensembles is in agreement with the experimental results if we assume that the $\alpha$-gas state in $^{56}$Ni exists at around $113^{+15}_{-17}$ MeV. These results suggest that there may exist an exotic state consisting of many $\alpha$ particles at the excitation energy of $113^{+15}_{-17}$ MeV., Comment: Accepted for publication in the European Physical Journal A

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies., Comment: 373 pages, many figures, to be published by J. Spatially-correlated overabundances of $^{15}$N and $^{18}$O observed in some low-density graphite meteoritic grains have been connected to nucleosynthesis taking place in the helium-burning shell during core-collapse supernovae. Two of the reactions which have been identified as important to the final abundances of $^{15}$N and $^{18}$O are $^{18}$F($n,\alpha$)$^{15}$N and $^{18}$F($n,p$)$^{18}$O. The relative strengths of the $^{18}$F($n,\alpha$)$^{15}$N and $^{18}$F($n,p$)$^{18}$O reactions depend on the relative $\alpha_0$ and $p_0$ decays from states above the neutron threshold in $^{19}$F in addition to other properties. Experimental data on the charged-particle decays from these highly excited states are lacking or inconsistent. Two experiments were performed using proton inelastic scattering from LiF targets and magnetic spectrographs. The first experiment used the high-resolution Q3D spectrograph at Munich to constrain properties of levels in $^{19}$F. A second experiment using the Orsay Split-Pole spectrograph and an array of silicon detectors was performed in order to measure the charged-particle decays of neutron-unbound levels in $^{19}$F. A number of levels in $^{19}$F have been identified along with their corresponding charged-particle decays. The first state above the neutron threshold which has an observed proton-decay branch to the ground state of $^{18}$O lies 68 keV above the neutron threshold while the $\alpha$-particle decays from the neutron-unbound levels are generally observed to be much stronger than the proton decays. Neutron-unbound levels in $^{19}$F are observed to decay predominantly by $\alpha$-particle emission, supporting the role of $^{18}$F($n,\alpha$)$^{15}$N in the production of $^{15}$N in the helium-burning shell of supernovae. Neutron-capture reactions on $^{18}$F in the helium-burning shell play an important role in the production of $^{15}$N during core-collapse supernovae. The competition between the $^{18}$F($n,p/\alpha$)$^{18}$O/$^{15}$N reactions controls the amount of $^{15}$N produced. The strengths of these reactions depend on the decay branching ratios of states in $^{19}$F above the neutron threshold. We report on an experiment investigating the decay branching ratios of these states in order to better constrain the strengths of the reactions., Comment: Submitted as part of the Proceedings of NIC 2018

The systematic study of fission fragment yields under different initial conditions provides a valuable experimental benchmark for fission models that aim to understand this complex decay channel and to predict reaction product yields. Inverse kinematics coupled to the use of a high-resolution spectrometer is shown to be a powerful tool to identify and measure the inclusive isotopic yields of fission fragments. In-flight fusion fission was used to produce secondary beams of neutron-rich isotopes in the collision of a 238U beam at 24 MeV/u with 9Be and 12C targets at GANIL using the LISE3 fragment-separator. Unique A,Z,q identification of fission products was attained with the dE-TKE-Brho-ToF measurement technique. Mass, and atomic number distributions are reported for the two reactions that show the importance of different reaction mechanisms for these two targets., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated $^{14}$O was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E$\_R$=4.757(6)(10)~MeV with a width of $\Gamma$=36(5)(14)~keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a $^{12}$C core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the $2s\_{1/2}$ shell., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, Submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Background:The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty. Method: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF$_{2}$ Total Absorption Calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature has been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Radioactive beams of $^{14}$O and $^{15}$O were used to populate the resonant states 1/2$^+$, 5/2$^+$ and $0^-,1^-,2^-$ in the unbound $^{15}$F and $^{16}$F nuclei respectively by means of proton elastic scattering reactions in inverse kinematics. Based on their large proton spectroscopic factor values, the resonant states in $^{16}$F can be viewed as a core of $^{14}$O plus a proton in the 2s$_{1/2}$ or 1d$_{5/2}$ shell and a neutron in 1p$_{1/2}$. Experimental energies were used to derive the strength of the 2s$_{1/2}$-1p$_{1/2}$ and 1d$_{5/2}$-1p$_{1/2}$ proton-neutron interactions. It is found that the former changes by 40% compared with the mirror nucleus $^{16}$N, and the second by 10%. This apparent symmetry breaking of the nuclear force between mirror nuclei finds explanation in the role of the large coupling to the continuum for the states built on an $\ell=0$ proton configuration., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication as a regular article in Physical Review C

The observed primordial 7Li abundance in metal-poor halo stars is found to be lower than its Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) calculated value by a factor of approximately three. Some recent works suggested the possibility that this discrepancy originates from missing resonant reactions which would destroy the 7Be, parent of 7Li. The most promising candidate resonances which were found include a possibly missed 1- or 2- narrow state around 15 MeV in the compound nucleus 10C formed by 7Be+3He and a state close to 7.8 MeV in the compound nucleus 11C formed by 7Be+4He. In this work, we studied the high excitation energy region of 10C and the low excitation energy region in 11C via the reactions 10B(3He,t)10C and 11B(3He,t)11C, respectively, at the incident energy of 35 MeV. Our results for 10C do not support 7Be+3He as a possible solution for the 7Li problem. Concerning 11C results, the data show no new resonances in the excitation energy region of interest and this excludes 7Be+4He reaction channel as an explanation for the 7Li deficit., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Inverse kinematics coupled to a high-resolution spectrometer is used to investigate the isotopic yields of fission fragments produced in reactions between a 238U beam at 24 MeV/u and 9Be and 12C targets. Mass, atomic number and isotopic distributions are reported for the two reactions. These informations give access to the neutron excess and the isotopic distribution widths, which together with the atomic-number and mass distributions are used to investigate the fusion-fission dynamics., Comment: Submitted to PRC

During the fission process, the nucleus deforms and elongates up to the two fragments inception and their final separation at scission deformation. The evolution of the nucleus energy with deformation is determined by the macroscopic properties of the nucleus, and is also strongly influenced by the single-particle structure of the nucleus. The fission fragment distribution is a direct consequence of the deformation path the nucleus has encountered, and therefore is the most genuine experimental observation of the potential energy landscape of the deforming nucleus. Very asymmetric fusion-fission reactions at energy close to the Coulomb barrier, produce well-defined conditions of the compound nucleus formation, where processes such as quasi-fission, pre-equilibrium emission and incomplete fusion are negligible. In the same time, the excitation energy is sufficient to reduce significantly structural effects, and mostly the macroscopic part of the potential is responsible for the formation of the fission fragments. We use inverse kinematics combined with spectrometers to select and identify the fission fragments produced in $^{238}$U+$^{12}$C at a bombarding energy close to and well-above the Coulomb barrier. For the first time, the isotopic yields are measured over the complete atomic-number distribution, between Z=30 and Z=63. The experimental set-up also allows to identify transfer-induced reactions, which lead to low-energy fission where the nuclear shell structure shows a strong influence on the fission-fragment distributions. The resulting set of data gives the possibility to observe the fission fragment properties over a wide range of excitation energy, and they reveal the vanishing of the shell effects in the potential energy of the fissioning nucleus, as well as the influence of fission dynamics., Comment: Invited Plenary Talk given at the 11th International Conference on Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (NN2012), San Antonio, Texas, USA, May 27-June 1, 2012. The unbound nucleus $^{18}$Na, the intermediate nucleus in the two-proton radioactivity of $^{19}$Mg, was studied by the measurement of the resonant elastic scattering reaction $^{17}$Ne(p,$^{17}$Ne)p performed at 4 A.MeV. Spectroscopic properties of the low-lying states were obtained in a R-matrix analysis of the excitation function. Using these new results, we show that the lifetime of the $^{19}$Mg radioactivity can be understood assuming a sequential emission of two protons via low energy tails of $^{18}$Na resonances.

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of 76Ge at the Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2+1 state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Dopplershift method with the K\"oln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2+1 states in 72,74Zn were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2+1 \rightarrow 0+) = 385(39) and 370(33) e2fm4, respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point towards a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete {\gamma}-softness at N = 42., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. he electric quadrupole coupling constant of the 31Al ground state is measured to be nu_Q = |eQV_{zz}/h| = 2196(21)kHz using two different beta-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) techniques. For the first time, a direct comparison is made between the continuous rf technique and the adiabatic fast passage method. The obtained coupling constants of both methods are in excellent agreement with each other and a precise value for the quadrupole moment of 31Al has been deduced: |Q(31Al)| = 134.0(16) mb. Comparison of this value with large-scale shell-model calculations in the sd and sdpf valence spaces suggests that the 31Al ground state is dominated by normal sd-shell configurations with a possible small contribution of intruder states. The obtained value for |Q(31Al)| and a compilation of measured quadrupole moments of odd-Z even-N isotopes in comparison with shell-model calculations shows that the proton effective charge e_p=1.1 e provides a much better description of the nuclear properties in the sd-shell than the adopted value e_p=1.3 e.

The decay of the ground-state two-proton emitter 45Fe was studied with a time-projection chamber and the emission of two protons was unambiguously identified. The total decay energy and the half-life measured in this work agree with the results from previous experiments. The present result constitutes the first direct observation of the individual protons in the two-proton decay of a long-lived ground-state emitter. In parallel, we identified for the first time directly two-proton emission from 43Cr, a known beta-delayed two-proton emitter. The technique developped in the present work opens the way to a detailed study of the mechanism of ground-state as well as beta-delayed two-proton radioactivity., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We propose the sequential reaction process $^{15}$O($p$,$\gamma)(\beta^{+}$)$^{16}$O as a new pathway to bypass of the $^{15}$O waiting point. This exotic reaction is found to have a surprisingly high cross section, approximately 10$^{10}$ times higher than the $^{15}$O($p$,$\beta^{+}$)$^{16}$O. These cross sections were calculated after precise measurements of energies and widths of the proton-unbound $^{16}$F low lying states, obtained using the H($^{15}$O,p)$^{15}$O reaction. The large $(p,\gamma)(\beta^{+})$ cross section can be understood to arise from the more efficient feeding of the low energy wing of the ground state resonance by the gamma decay. The implications of the new reaction in novae explosions and X-ray bursts are discussed., Comment: submitted

Research on accelerator driven systems (ADS), related new fuels and their ability for nuclear waste incineration has led to a revival of interest in nuclear cross sections of many nuclides over a large energy range. Discrepancies observed between nuclear data bases require new measurements in several cases. A complete measurement of such cross sections including resonance resolution consists of an extensive beam time experiment associated to a long process of analysis ans validation. With a slowing down spectrometer associated to a pulsed neutron source, it is possible to determine good cross section profile in an energy range from 0.1 eV to 40 keV. These measurements performed at ISN (Grenoble) with neutron source GENEPI requires only small quantities of matter (as small as 0.1 g) and about one day of beam per target., Comment: 0 pages, 6 tables, to submit in NIM-A
