Abstract

We introduce a simple model of the time evolution of a binary mixture of compressible fluids including the thermal effects. Despite its apparent simplicity, the model is thermodynamically consistent admitting an entropy balance equation. We introduce a suitable weak formulation of the problem based on a combination of the entropy inequality with the total energy conservation principle. Finally, we show compactness of any bounded family of weak solutions and establish a global existence result.

We consider a model of a binary mixture of two immiscible compressible fluids. We propose a numerical scheme and discuss its basic properties: Stability, consistency, convergence. The convergence is established via the method of generalized weak solutions combined with the weak-strong uniqueness principle.

Abstract

A myth of antiquity is explained with modern science in the context of an ancient naval battle. A legend was invoked by the admiral Pliny the Elder to explain the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra against Octavian at the naval battle of Actium. A fish, called echeneis or remora, is said to have the power to stop ships or to delay their motion by adhering to the hull. Naturalists have since studied how the fish sucking-disk with its typical pattern of parallel striae sticks to its host. Here we show the pattern of the free surface measured in a towing tank in the wake of an ancient galley is similar to the striae pattern of the fish. We have measured the bathymetry at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf that influenced the physical environment of the battle. The computations demonstrate the increase of wave resistance of a galley as a function of the draft to the water depth ratio in shallow water corresponding to the appearance of a particular wake pattern: the echeneidian free surface pattern., Comment: Some misprints corrected with respect to the conference proceedings

5. A diffuse interface model of a two-phase flow with thermal fluctuations

Abstract

We consider a model of a two phase flow proposed by Anderson, McFadden and Wheeler taking into account possible thermal fluctuations. The mathematical model consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes system coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation, where the latter is driven by a multiplicative temporal white noise accounting for thermal fluctuations. We show that existence of dissipative martingale solutions satisfying the associated total energy balance.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to propose ODE based approaches for the numerical evaluation of matrix functions $f(A)$, a question of major interest in the numerical linear algebra. To this end, we model $f(A)$ as the solution at a finite time $T$ of a time dependent equation. We use parallel algorithms, such as the parareal method, on the time interval $[0, T]$ in order to solve the evolution equation obtained. When $f(A)$ is reached as a stable steady state, it can be computed by combining parareal algorithms and optimal control techniques. Numerical illustrations are given.

Abstract

This thesis, containing four chapters, studies the existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solutions of the Primitive Equations (PEs) of the oceans and the atmosphere in space dimensions 2 and 3 (Chapters 1--3), and also the asymptotic behavior of the PEs when the Rossby number goes to zero (Chapter 4); the boundary conditions considered here are periodical.In the first chapter, we consider the PEs of the ocean in a two-dimensional space (three dimensional motion independent of the y variable). We prove the existence, globally in time, of a weak solution and the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions. Moreover, we prove the existence of more regular solutions, up to C-infinity regularity.In the second chapter, for a model similar to the previous one, we prove that, for a forcing term which is analytical in time with values in a Gevrey space, the solutions of the PEs starting with the initial data in a certain Sobolev space become, for some positive time, elements of a certain Gevrey class. As a natural continuation of the work from the first two chapters, in the third chapter we consider the PEs in a 3D domain and we study the Sobolev and Gevrey regularity for the solutions. The last chapter of the thesis is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behavior when the Rossby number goes to zero, for the PEs in the form considered in the first chapter. The aim of this work is to average, using the renormalization group method, the oscillations of the exact solution when the Rossby number goes to zero, and to prove that the averaged solution is a good approximation of the exact oscillating solution., Ce mémoire composé de quatre chapitres, réunit des résultats sur l'existence, l'unicité et la régularité des solutions des Equations Primitives (EPs) des océans et de l'atmosphère, en dimension deux et trois d'espace (Chapitres 1--3), ainsi qu'une étude sur le comportement asymptotique des EPs quand le nombre de Rossby tend vers zero (Chapitre 4) ; les conditions aux limites sont de type périodique dans tous les cas.Dans le premier chapitre, on considère les EPs de l'océan en dimension deux d'espace (écoulement tridimensionnel indépendant de la variable y). Abstract

Ce travail a pour but de présenter et d'étudier les équations primitives quasi-hydrostatiques (QHPE). Ce modèle, qui dérive des équations complètes de la mécanique des fluides géophysiques dans la limite d'un faible rapport d'aspect, est plus complet que le modèle hydrostatique classique, car il s'abstrait de l'approximation dite traditionnelle qui consiste à négliger une partie de la force de Coriolis. Nous justifions dans cet article la dérivation des QHPE avant de montrer leur caractère bien posé.---Derivation and Well-Posedness of the Quasi-Hydrostatic Primitive Equations. This paper aims at introducing and studying the well-posedness of the quasi-hydrostatic primitive equations (QHPE). This model, that derives from the full non-hydrostatic model for geophysical uid dynamics in the zero-limit of the aspect ratio, is more realistic than the classical hydrostatic model, since the traditionnal approximation that consists in neglecting a part of the Coriolis force is relaxed. After justifying the derivation of the QHPE model, we give some well-posedness arguments.

Abstract

International audience; In this article we consider a system of equations related to the delta–Primitive Equations of the ocean and the atmosphere, linearized around a stratified flow, and we supplement the equations with transparent boundary conditions. We study the stability of different numerical schemes and we show that for each case, letting the vertical viscosity delta go to 0, the stability conditions are the same as the classical CFL conditions for the transport equation.

Abstract

The numerical analysis of the coupled Cahn-Hilliard/Allen-Cahn system endowed with dynamic boundary conditions is studied in this article. We consider a semi-discretisation in space using a finite element method and we derive error estimates between the exact and the approximate solution. Then, using the backward Euler scheme for the time variable, a fully discrete scheme is obtained and its stability is proved.
