Abstract

The discharge of untreated electroplating wastewater could lead to the formation of toxic metal-organic complexes that is harmful for the environment. There are several processes reported to treat electroplating wastewater such as chemical precipitation, adsorption, coagulation and flocculation, ion exchange, electrocoagulation, membrane filtration, advanced oxidation process and biorecovery. These methods provide the possibility to capture different toxic metals and remove organic pollutants. The combination of different processes together has shown higher efficiencies in removing a wide range of contaminants than single treatment systems. The main challenge is identifying the highest treatment performance and most cost-efficient process. This review provides an overview of treatment technologies for electroplating wastewater and describes the strengths and drawbacks among them. The efficiency of different systems and kinds of pollutants removed, along with a comparison between these systems have been analysed. When comparing the treatment technologies, it is hard to identify the most efficient one as each method has been successful in removing certain pollutants that has not been recovered from the other methods. Therefore, making the decision on identifying the best treatment technology depends on the objective of the treatment and the targeted pollutants. Furthermore, the cost of different technologies has been evaluated based on literature to have a brief look at cost differences between the technologies. When targeting removal of heavy metals, the highest cost of treatment has been reported at around 4.45 $/m3 for the adsorption method employing nano zero valent iron (nZVI). While the lowest cost of treatment has been reported at about 0.35 USD/m3 employing an adsorption method followed by electrodeposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Challenges and Possible Solutions for Riverbank Filtration: Case Studies of Three Sites in Egypt.

Abstract

In response to Egypt's escalating water scarcity and pollution, Riverbank Filtration (RBF) technology is emerging as an effective solution to enhance water quality and simplify drinking water provision. This study evaluates RBF at three sites in Upper Egypt by assessing hydrogeological conditions and water quality based on 36 parameters from 2022 to 2023. Findings indicate that RBF efficiently treats infiltrated river water, with all sites meeting turbidity and microbiological standards (Total Bacterial Count and Coliforms), achieving removal rates of approximately 90% and 99%, respectively. Despite these successes, challenges persist in reducing manganese to safe levels, with concentrations at Alsaayda site reaching 0.51 mg/L, over the drinking water safe limit of 0.4 mg/L. To address this, further post-treatment strategies are proposed to remove the excess manganese. A practical application of an Oxidizer at the Bani Murr groundwater treatment plant has demonstrated the effective removal of iron and manganese, bringing their levels down to safe drinking water standards. This case exemplifies a successful solution for iron and manganese removal. Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak has impacted many daily activities and services we depend on. Due to changes in waste quantity and types, solid waste management (SWM) services such as waste collection, transportation, and treatment/disposal suffered. Global rules and mandates were issued to address these changes and the COVID-19 pandemic. This mini review examines seven countries and summarises the pandemic’s effects on municipal solid waste (MSW) and medical waste (MW) generation in terms of amount and composition, the SWM sector’s challenges, and government or other SWM guidelines and management measures. The data are analysed to provide suggestions for stakeholders on SWM worker protection, waste segregation, and recycling. This article identified that extending MW incineration, separating infectious waste at the source, and discontinuing recycling for infection control are the best ways to manage solid waste. The waste management system’s readiness was crucial to the pandemic response. Thus, countries like China, which has a robust SWM system, were able to contain the crisis and restrict danger, while others with weaker systems struggled. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of revising waste management policies and developing crisis response strategies that integrate flexible, innovative solutions to adapt quickly to changing waste demands and ensure public health and environmental protection during global health crises.

16. Local Origination--The First Step of CATV's Second Generation.

Abstract

Local program origination by cable television stations must be considered as the next step in the development of the medium. Although the growth of local origination as a significant means of informing and entertaining people can be accelerated through creative, relevant, and participative programming, the spiral of increased revenues, broader programming, and more subscribers and viewers will still take time to reach substantial proportions--especially in the light of continued government restrictions. As proprietary CATV channel programming, leased channels, premium entertainment, and instructional programming increase, the variety of revenue sources to support such programming will also increase. Although these forms of revenue will surely increase over the next five to ten years, initially the local origination activity in any system should be geared to the expected near-term income and then expanded as additional revenues develop. 17. Cable Communications Revolution. Future: Broadband Communications, Local Origination.

Abstract

The revolution in two-way broadband communications envisioned for the future includes remote access to libraries, interactive educational programing, shopping at home, personal and property security, and many other services limited only by man's imagination and his ability to deliver the service at a price the consumer is willing and able to pay. The most significant attributes of cable television (CATV) program origination are its ability to appeal to selective viewer interests and its ability to offer participation by the community. The development of specialized magazines in the 1960's showed that even a relatively small readership could be profitable. Similarly, CATV programs on such specialized topics as knitting or wine-making should be able to turn a profit. By the early 1980's, with its ability to reach selective audiences, CATV should capture about 3 percent of the total advertising expenditure in the country. Channel leasing and pay TV will provide additional revenue. The growth of revenue in CATV in the coming years should approximate that experienced by television in the early 1950's. (JK)

Abstract

Cable television (CATV) promises to have the characteristics of a significant technology that will influence all of us in our personal lives and business endeavors. It will provide program diversity and new (nonbroadcast) services to households throughout the country. It will enable the viewer to interact with the program source via telephone. CATV channels will be leased by such diverse groups as merchandisers, news agencies, investment houses, government organizations, and educational institutions. Another broad class of CATV services will be pay TV, used not only for sports events and first-run films but also for adult education, specialized programs, and cultural events. Pay TV will be an essential feature to create the consumer demand for CATV in major metropolitan areas, and it will provide the economic base to develop the market for other types of interrogation and response services such as remote merchandising, information retrieval, interactive education, and home security. A number of home communications experiments are planned for several communities. The two most pervasive impacts will be the substitution of communications for transportation and the increased use of the video medium for print. (JK)

Abstract

This study analyzed candidate hydrogen-fueled vehicles for near and long-term use associated with their efficiency, performance, and emissions. Various types of hydrogen-fueled vehicles were assessed using Argonne National Laboratory's Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit vehicle simulation model. These include hythane-and hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines (ICEs), hydrogenfueled hybrid electric propulsion, and direct hydrogen fuel cells. Vehicle sizes and configurations, consistent with the available component models/data, were simulated to compare efficiency and emissions with baseline conventional vehicles. The simulations provided salient information on the vehicle characteristics, performance, and efficiency, as functions of operating conditions on standard driving cycles. It was found that substantial gains in fuel economy can be achieved through hybridization both for conventional and fuel cell vehicles. When hybridized, hydrogen ICE configurations achieve similar fuel economy to gasoline counterparts. The results also confirm that ICE hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) achieve higher fuel economy than fuel cell configurations and comparable results with fuel cell HEV. Comparison of efficiency results for various driving cycles further indicates that cycles with low power demand are most suited for hybrid operations. Abstract

A novel remediation technology that utilized surfactant foam proved efficient in in situ remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) that occur as dense nonaqueous-phase liquids (DNAPLs). The surfactant Steol CS-330 injected into TCE-DNAPL-contaminated sand columns has effectively enhanced the mobilization of TCE-DNAPLs. Mobilization, however, was greatly enhanced when the foam was injected in a pulsed operation.
