Search

Recent observations have revealed rare, previously unknown flashes of cosmic radio waves lasting from milliseconds to minutes, and with periodicity of minutes to an hour [1-4]. These transient radio signals must originate from sources in the Milky Way, and from coherent emission processes in astrophysical plasma. They are theorised to be produced in the extreme and highly magnetised environments around white dwarfs or neutron stars [5-8]. However, the astrophysical origin of these signals remains contested, and multiple progenitor models may be needed to explain their diverse properties. Here we present the discovery of a transient radio source, ILT J1101+5521, whose roughly minute-long pulses arrive with a periodicity of 125.5 minutes. We find that ILT J1101+5521 is an M dwarf - white dwarf binary system with an orbital period that matches the period of the radio pulses, which are observed when the two stars are in conjunction. The binary nature of ILT J1101+5521 establishes that some long-period radio transients originate from orbital motion modulating the observed emission, as opposed to an isolated rotating star. We conclude that ILT J1101+5521 is likely a polar system where magnetic interaction has synchronised the rotational and orbital periods of the white dwarf [9]. Magnetic interaction and plasma exchange between the two stars may generate the sporadic radio emission. Such mechanisms have been previously theorised [10-13], but not observationally established.

Although the majority of hot magnetic stars have extremely stable, $\sim$kG strength surface magnetic fields with simple topologies, a subset undergo small-scale explosions due to centrifugal breakout (CBO). The resulting small-scale flares are typically below the sensitivity of current magentospheric diagnostics and do not generate detectable transient signatures. However, a recently reported radio flare from the hot magnetic star CU Vir suggests that some of the most energetic events do reach detectable levels. Motivated by this, we searched for transient radio sources in the first two epochs of the VLITE Commensal Sky Survey (VCSS) at the position of 761 hot magnetic stars. We report three detections. A false association analysis shows a less than 1% probability that the sources are imaging artifacts. We then examine the stellar parameters of the three stars to understand if they are likely to produce flares. We conclude that while at this stage we cannot make a definitive association of the detections with the stars, the current data are consistent with the hypothesis that the flares originate in the stellar magnetospheres., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Time Domain Field (TDF) near the North Ecliptic Pole in JWST's continuous-viewing zone will become a premier "blank field" for extragalactic science. JWST/NIRCam data in a 16 arcmin$^2$ portion of the TDF identify 4.4 $\mu$m counterparts for 62 of 63 3 GHz sources with S(3 GHz) > 5 {\mu}Jy. The one unidentified radio source may be a lobe of a nearby Seyfert galaxy, or it may be an infrared-faint radio source. The bulk properties of the radio-host galaxies are consistent with those found by previous work: redshifts range from 0.14 to 4.4 with a median redshift of 1.33. The radio emission arises primarily from star formation in $\sim 2/3$ of the sample and from an active galactic nucleus in $\sim 1/3$, but just over half the sample shows evidence for an AGN either in the spectral energy distribution or by radio excess. All but three counterparts are brighter than magnitude 23 AB at 4.4 $\mu$m, and the exquisite resolution of JWST identifies correct counterparts for sources for which observations with lower angular resolution would mis-identify a nearby bright source as the counterpart when the correct one is faint and red. We present results from a search for radio recombination lines in three HI self-absorbing (HISA) clouds at 750 MHz and 321 MHz with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), and in three Galactic Plane positions at 327 MHz with the Arecibo Telescope. We detect Carbon Recombination Lines (CRRLs) in the direction of DR4 and DR21, as well as in the galactic plane position G34.94+0.0. We additionally detect Hydrogen Recombination Lines (HRRLs) in emission in five of the six sightlines, and a Helium line at 750 MHz towards DR21. Combining our new data with 150 MHz LOFAR detections of CRRL absorption towards DR4 and DR21, we estimate the electron densities of the line forming regions by modeling the line width as a function of frequency. The estimated densities are in the range 1.4 $\rightarrow$ 6.5 cm$^{-3}$ towards DR4, for electron temperatures 200 $\rightarrow$ 20 K. A dual line forming region with densities between 3.5 $\rightarrow$ 24 cm$^{-3}$ and 0.008 $\rightarrow$ 0.3 cm$^{-3}$ could plausibly explain the observed line width as a function of frequency on the DR21 sightline. The central velocities of the CRRLs compare well with CO emission and HISA lines in these directions. The cloud densities estimated from the CO lines are smaller (at least a factor of 5) than those of the CRRL forming regions. It is likely that the CRRL forming and HI self-absorbing gas is located in a denser, shocked region either at the boundary of or within the CO emitting cloud., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, to appear in ApJ

We present new images and continuum spectral analysis for 14 resolved Galactic SNRs selected from the 74 MHz Very Large Array Low-Frequency Sky Survey Redux (VLSSr). We combine new integrated measurements from the VLSSr with flux densities extracted from the GLEAM and measurements from the literature to generate improved continuum spectra. We combine the VLSSr images with publicly available images at 1.4 GHz, to analyse the resolved morphology and spectral index distribution across each SNR. Three of the SNRs, Kepler, G28.6-0.1, and Tycho, have integrated spectra which can be adequately fit with simple power laws. The resolved spectral index map for Tycho confirms internal absorption which was previously detected by the LOFAR, but it is insufficient to affect the fit to the integrated spectrum. For the pulsar wind nebulae G21.5-0.9 and 3C58 we identify high-frequency spectral breaks at 38 and 12 GHz, respectively. A low frequency spectral turnover adequately fits the data of the remaining nine SNRs. For Kes 67, Kes 69, Kes75, and 3C397, we attribute the absorption to ionised gas along the line of sight, possibly from extended HII region envelopes. For W41 the absorption can be attributed to HII regions located in its immediate proximity. Thermal absorption from interactions at the ionised interface between SNR forward shocks and the surrounding medium were previously identified as responsible for the low frequency turnover in SNR 3C391; our integrated spectrum is consistent with the previous results. We present evidence for the same phenomenon in three additional SNRs, Kes73, W49B, and 3C396, and derive constraints on the physical properties of the interaction. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are exceptionally luminous flashes of unknown physical origin, reaching us from other galaxies (Petroff et al. 2019). Most FRBs have only ever been seen once, while others flash repeatedly, though sporadically (Spitler et al. 2016, CHIME/FRB Collaboration et al. 2021). Many models invoke magnetically powered neutron stars (magnetars) as the engines producing FRB emission (Margalit & Metzger 2018, CHIME/FRB Collaboration et al. 2020). Recently, CHIME/FRB announced the discovery (Bhardwaj et al. 2021) of the repeating FRB 20200120E, coming from the direction of the nearby grand design spiral galaxy M81. Four potential counterparts at other observing wavelengths were identified (Bhardwaj et al. 2021) but no definitive association with these sources, or M81, could be made. Here we report an extremely precise localisation of FRB 20200120E, which allows us to associate it with a globular cluster (GC) in the M81 galactic system and to place it ~2pc offset from the optical center of light of the GC. This confirms (Bhardwaj et al. 2021) that FRB 20200120E is 40 times closer than any other known extragalactic FRB. Because such GCs host old stellar populations, this association strongly challenges FRB models that invoke young magnetars formed in a core-collapse supernova as powering FRB emission. We propose, instead, that FRB 20200120E is a highly magnetised neutron star formed via either accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf or via merger of compact stars in a binary system (Margalit et al. 2019). Alternative scenarios involving compact binary systems, efficiently formed inside globular clusters, could also be responsible for the observed bursts., Comment: Submitted. Comments welcome

From an on-going survey of the Galactic bulge, we have discovered a number of compact, steep spectrum radio sources. In this present study we have carried out more detailed observations for two of these sources, located 43 arcmin and 12.7 deg from the Galactic Center. Both sources have a very steep spectrum (alpha ~ -3) and are compact, with upper limits on the angular size of 1-2 arcsec. Their flux densities appear to be relatively steady on timescales of years, months, and hours, with no indications of rapid variability or transient behavior. We detect significant circularly polarized emission from both sources, but only weak or upper limits on linear polarization. Neither source has a counterpart at other wavelengths and deep, high-frequency searches fail to find pulsations. We compare their source properties with other known compact, non-thermal source populations in the bulge (e.g. X-ray binaries, magnetars, the Burper, cataclysmic variables). Our existing data support the hypothesis that they are scatter broadened millisecond or recycled pulsars, either at the bulge or along the line of sight. We also consider the possibility that they may be a new population of Galactic radio sources which share similar properties as pulsars but lack pulsations; a hypothesis that can be tested by future large-scale synoptic surveys., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will observe several Deep Drilling Fields (DDFs) to a greater depth and with a more rapid cadence than the main survey. In this paper, we describe the ``DeepDrill'' survey, which used the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) to observe three of the four currently defined DDFs in two bands, centered on 3.6 $\mu$m and 4.5 $\mu$m. These observations expand the area which was covered by an earlier set of observations in these three fields by the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (SERVS). The combined DeepDrill and SERVS data cover the footprints of the LSST DDFs in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South field (ECDFS), the ELAIS-S1 field (ES1), and the XMM Large-Scale Structure Survey field (XMM-LSS). The observations reach an approximate $5\sigma$ point-source depth of 2 $\mu$Jy (corresponding to an AB magnitude of 23.1; sufficient to detect a 10$^{11} M_{\odot}$ galaxy out to $z\approx 5$) in each of the two bands over a total area of $\approx 29\,$deg$^2$. The dual-band catalogues contain a total of 2.35 million sources. In this paper we describe the observations and data products from the survey, and an overview of the properties of galaxies in the survey. We compare the source counts to predictions from the SHARK semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. We also identify a population of sources with extremely red ([3.6]$-$[4.5] $>1.2$) colours which we show mostly consists of highly-obscured active galactic nuclei., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures; MNRAS in press

The Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) is a synoptic, all-sky radio sky survey with a unique combination of high angular resolution ($\approx$2.5"), sensitivity (a 1$\sigma$ goal of 70 $\mu$Jy/beam in the coadded data), full linear Stokes polarimetry, time domain coverage, and wide bandwidth (2-4 GHz). The first observations began in September 2017, and observing for the survey will finish in 2024. VLASS will use approximately 5500 hours of time on the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to cover the whole sky visible to the VLA (Declination $>-40^{\circ}$), a total of 33,885 deg$^2$. The data will be taken in three epochs to allow the discovery of variable and transient radio sources. The survey is designed to engage radio astronomy experts, multi-wavelength astronomers, and citizen scientists alike. By utilizing an "on the fly" interferometry mode, the observing overheads are much reduced compared to a conventional pointed survey. The neutron-capture reaction plays a critical role in the synthesis of the elements in stars and is important for societal applications including nuclear power generation and stockpile-stewardship science. However, it is difficult - if not impossible - to directly measure neutron capture cross sections for the exotic, short-lived nuclei that participate in these processes. In this Letter we demonstrate a new technique which can be used to indirectly determine neutron-capture cross sections for exotic systems. This technique makes use of the $(d,p)$ transfer reaction, which has long been used as a tool to study the structure of nuclei. Recent advances in reaction theory, together with data collected using this reaction, enable the determination of neutron-capture cross sections for short-lived nuclei. A benchmark study of the $^{95}$Mo$(d,p)$ reaction is presented, which illustrates the approach and provides guidance for future applications of the method with short-lived isotopes produced at rare isotope accelerators., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We have identified a new supernova remnant (SNR), G51.04+0.07 (G51.04), using observations at 74 MHz from the VLA Low-Frequency Sky Survey Redux. Earlier, higher frequency radio continuum, recombination line, and infrared data had correctly inferred the presence of nonthermal radio emission within a large complex including ionised nebulae and active star formation. However, our observations have allowed us to redefine at least one SNR as a relatively small source (7'.5 x 3' in size) located at the southern periphery of the originally defined SNR candidate. The integrated flux density of G51.04 at 74 MHz is 6.1 +/- 0.8 Jy, while its radio continuum spectrum has a slope alpha=-0.52 +/- 0.05, typical of a shell-type remnant. We also measured spatial variations in the spectral index between 74 and 1400~MHz across the source, ranging from a steeper spectrum (alpha~-0.50) coincident with the brightest emission to a flatter component (alpha~-0.30) in the surrounding fainter region. To probe the interstellar medium into which the redefined SNR is likely evolving, we have analysed the surrounding atomic and molecular gas using the 21~cm neutral hydrogen (HI) and 13CO (J=1-0) emissions. We found that G51.04 is confined within an HI cavity and that its radio emission is consistent with the remains of a stellar explosion that occurred ~6300 yr ago at a distance of ~7.7 kpc. Kinematic data suggest that the newly discovered SNR lies in front of HII regions in the complex, consistent with the lack of a low frequency turnover in the continuum spectrum. The CO observations revealed molecular material that traces the central and northern parts of G51.04. The interaction between the cloud and the radio source is not conclusive. The relatively low flux density (~1.5 Jy at 1400 MHz) of G51.04 is consistent with many similar SNRs hidden along complex lines of sight towards inner Galactic emission complexes., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Transfer reactions have provided exciting opportunities to study the structure of exotic nuclei and are often used to inform studies relating to nucleosynthesis and applications. In order to benefit from these reactions and their application to rare ion beams (RIBs) it is necessary to develop the tools and techniques to perform and analyze the data from reactions performed in inverse kinematics, that is with targets of light nuclei and heavier beams. We are continuing to expand the transfer reaction toolbox in preparation for the next generation of facilities, such as the Facility for Rare Ion Beams (FRIB), which is scheduled for completion in 2022. An important step in this process is to perform the (d,n) reaction in inverse kinematics, with analyses that include Q-value spectra and differential cross sections. In this way, proton-transfer reactions can be placed on the same level as the more commonly used neutron-transfer reactions, such as (d,p), (9Be,8Be), and (13C,12C). Gravitational waves have been detected from a binary neutron star merger event, GW170817. The detection of electromagnetic radiation from the same source has shown that the merger occurred in the outskirts of the galaxy NGC 4993, at a distance of 40 megaparsecs from Earth. We report the detection of a counterpart radio source that appears 16 days after the event, allowing us to diagnose the energetics and environment of the merger. The observed radio emission can be explained by either a collimated ultra-relativistic jet viewed off-axis, or a cocoon of mildly relativistic ejecta. Within 100 days of the merger, the radio light curves will distinguish between these models and very long baseline interferometry will have the capability to directly measure the angular velocity and geometry of the debris., Comment: Science, in press, 26 pages, DOI:10.1126/science.aap9855

The $^{24}$Mg($p$, $\alpha$)$^{21}$Na reaction was measured at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in order to better constrain spins and parities of energy levels in $^{21}$Na for the astrophysically important $^{17}$F($\alpha, p$)$^{20}$Ne reaction rate calculation. 31 MeV proton beams from the 25-MV tandem accelerator and enriched $^{24}$Mg solid targets were used. Recoiling $^{4}$He particles from the $^{24}$Mg($p$, $\alpha$)$^{21}$Na reaction were detected by a highly segmented silicon detector array which measured the yields of $^{4}$He particles over a range of angles simultaneously. A new level at 6661 $\pm$ 5 keV was observed in the present work. The extracted angular distributions for the first four levels of $^{21}$Na and Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) calculations were compared to verify and extract angular momentum transfer., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Accelerators and Beam Utilization (ICABU2014)

15Be is expected to have low-lying 3/2+ and 5/2+ states. A first search did not observe the 3/2+ [A. Spyrou et al., Phys. Rev. C 84, 044309 (2011)], however, a resonance in 15Be was populated in a second attempt and determined to be unbound with respect to 14Be by 1.8(1) MeV with a tentative spin-parity assignment of 5/2+ [J. Snyder et al., Phys. Rev. C 88, 031303(R) (2013)]. Search for the predicted 15Be 3/2+ state in the three-neutron decay channel. A two-proton removal reaction from a 55 MeV/u 17C beam was used to populate neutron-unbound states in 15Be. The two-, three-, and four-body decay energies of the 12Be + neutron(s) detected in coincidence were reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to extract the resonance and decay properties from the observed spectra. The low-energy regions of the decay energy spectra can be described with the first excited unbound state of 14Be (E_x=1.54 MeV, E_r=0.28 MeV). Including a state in 15Be that decays through the first excited 14Be state slightly improves the fit at higher energies though the cross section is small. A 15Be component is not needed to describe the data. If the 3/2+ state in 15Be is populated, the decay by three-neutron emission through 14Be is weak, less than or equal to 11% up to 4 MeV. In the best fit, 15Be is unbound with respect to 12Be by 1.4 MeV (unbound with respect to $14Be by 2.66 MeV) with a strength of 7%., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Physical Review C

Spectroscopic information has been extracted on the hole-states of $^{55}$Ni, the least known of the quartet of nuclei ($^{55}$Ni, $^{57}$Ni, $^{55}$Co and $^{57}$Co), one neutron away from $^{56}$Ni, the N=Z=28 double magic nucleus. Using the $^{1}$H($^{56}$Ni,d)$^{55}$Ni transfer reaction in inverse kinematics, neutron spectroscopic factors, spins and parities have been extracted for the f$_{7/2}$, p$_{3/2}$ and the s$_{1/2}$ hole-states of $^{55}$Ni. This new data provides a benchmark for large basis calculations that include nucleonic orbits in both the sd and pf shells. State of the art calculations have been performed to describe the excitation energies and spectroscopic factors of the s$_{1/2}$ hole-state below Fermi energy., Comment: Submitted to PLB

The applicability of Coulomb dissociation reactions to determine the cross section for the inverse neutron capture reaction was explored using the reaction 8Li(gamma,n)7Li. A 69.5 MeV/nucleon 8Li beam was incident on a Pb target, and the outgoing neutron and 7Li nucleus were measured in coincidence. The deduced (n,gamma) excitation function is consistent with data for the direct capture reaction 7Li(n,gamma)8Li and with low-energy effective field theory calculations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We mapped 12CO and 13CO J = 2-1 emission over 1.04 square deg of the Serpens molecular cloud with 38 arcsec spatial and 0.3 km/s spectral resolution using the Arizona Radio Observatory Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter telescope. Our maps resolve kinematic properties for the entire Serpens cloud. We also compare our velocity moment maps with known positions of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) and 1.1 mm continuum emission. We find that 12CO is self-absorbed and 13CO is optically thick in the Serpens core. Outside of the Serpens core, gas appears in filamentary structures having LSR velocities which are blue-shifted by up to 2 km/s relative to the 8 km/s systemic velocity of the Serpens cloud. We show that the known Class I, Flat, and Class II YSOs in the Serpens core most likely formed at the same spatial location and have since drifted apart. The spatial and velocity structure of the 12CO line ratios implies that a detailed 3-dimensional radiative transfer model of the cloud will be necessary for full interpretation of our spectral data. The starless cores region of the cloud is likely to be the next site of star formation in Serpens., Comment: 41 pages, 15 figures

The extraction of detailed nuclear structure information from transfer reactions requires reliable, well-normalized data as well as optical potentials and a theoretical framework demonstrated to work well in the relevant mass and beam energy ranges. It is rare that the theoretical ingredients can be tested well for exotic nuclei owing to the paucity of data. The halo nucleus Be-11 has been examined through the 10Be(d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics at equivalent deuteron energies of 12,15,18, and 21.4 MeV. Elastic scattering of Be-10 on protons was used to select optical potentials for the analysis of the transfer data. Additionally, data from the elastic and inelastic scattering of Be-10 on deuterons was used to fit optical potentials at the four measured energies. Transfers to the two bound states and the first resonance in Be-11 were analyzed using the Finite Range ADiabatic Wave Approximation (FR-ADWA). Consistent values of the spectroscopic factor of both the ground and first excited states were extracted from the four measurements, with average values of 0.71(5) and 0.62(4) respectively. The calculations for transfer to the first resonance were found to be sensitive to the size of the energy bin used and therefore could not be used to extract a spectroscopic factor., Comment: 16 Pages, 10 figures

The ground state of neutron-rich unbound $^{13}$Li was observed for the first time in a one-proton removal reaction from $^{14}$Be at a beam energy of 53.6 MeV/u. The $^{13}$Li ground state was reconstructed from $^{11}$Li and two neutrons giving a resonance energy of 120$^{+60}_{-80}$ keV. All events involving single and double neutron interactions in the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) were analyzed, simulated, and fitted self-consistently. The three-body ($^{11}$Li+$n+n$) correlations within Jacobi coordinates showed strong dineutron characteristics. The decay energy spectrum of the intermediate $^{12}$Li system ($^{11}$Li+$n$) was described with an s-wave scattering length of greater than -4 fm, which is a smaller absolute value than reported in a previous measurement., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Neutron decay spectroscopy has become a successful tool to explore nuclear properties of nuclei with the largest neutron-to-proton ratios. Resonances in nuclei located beyond the neutron dripline are accessible by kinematic reconstruction of the decay products. The development of two-neutron detection capabilities of the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) at NSCL has opened up the possibility to search for unbound nuclei which decay by the emission of two neutrons. Specifically this exotic decay mode was observed in 16Be and 26O., Comment: To be published in Acta Physica Polonica B

The two-neutron unbound ground state resonances of $^{26}$O and $^{16}$Be were populated using one-proton knockout reactions from $^{27}$F and $^{17}$B beams. A coincidence measurement of 3-body system (fragment + n + n) allowed for the decay energy of the unbound nuclei to be reconstructed. A low energy resonance, $<$ 200 keV, was observed for the first time in the $^{24}$O + n + n system and assigned to the ground state of $^{26}$O. The $^{16}$Be ground state resonance was observed at 1.35 MeV. The 3-body correlations of the $^{14}$Be + n + n system were compared to simulations of a phase-space, sequential, and dineutron decay. The best examples of halo nuclei, exotic systems with a diffuse nuclear cloud surrounding a tightly-bound core, are found in the light, neutron-rich region, where the halo neutrons experience only weak binding and a weak, or no, potential barrier. Modern direct reaction measurement techniques provide powerful probes of the structure of exotic nuclei. Despite more than four decades of these studies on the benchmark one-neutron halo nucleus Be-11, the spectroscopic factors for the two bound states remain poorly constrained. In the present work, the Be-10(d,p) reaction has been used in inverse kinematics at four beam energies to study the structure of Be-11. The spectroscopic factors extracted using the adiabatic model, were found to be consistent across the four measurements, and were largely insensitive to the optical potential used. The extracted spectroscopic factor for a neutron in a nlj = 2s1/2 state coupled to the ground state of Be-10 is 0.71(5). This paper considers the suitability of a number of emerging and future instruments for the study of radio recombination lines (RRLs) at frequencies below 200 MHz. These lines arise only in low-density regions of the ionized interstellar medium, and they may represent a frequency-dependent foreground for next-generation experiments trying to detect H I signals from the Epoch of Reionization and Dark Ages ("21-cm cosmology"). We summarize existing decametre-wavelength observations of RRLs, which have detected only carbon RRLs. We then show that, for an interferometric array, the primary instrumental factor limiting detection and study of the RRLs is the areal filling factor of the array. We consider the Long Wavelength Array (LWA-1), the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), the low-frequency component of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA-lo), and a future Lunar Radio Array (LRA), all of which will operate at decametre wavelengths. These arrays offer digital signal processing, which should produce more stable and better defined spectral bandpasses; larger frequency tuning ranges; and better angular resolution than that of the previous generation of instruments that have been used in the past for RRL observations. Detecting Galactic carbon RRLs, with optical depths at the level of 10^-3, appears feasible for all of these arrays, with integration times of no more than 100 hr. The SKA-lo and LRA, and the LWA-1 and LOFAR at the lowest frequencies, should have a high enough filling factor to detect lines with much lower optical depths, of order 10^-4 in a few hundred hours. The amount of RRL-hosting gas present in the Galaxy at the high Galactic latitudes likely to be targeted in 21-cm cosmology studies is currently unknown. Spectroscopic factors have been extracted for proton rich 34Ar and neutron rich 46Ar using the (p,d) neutron transfer reaction. The experimental results show little reduction of the ground state neutron spectroscopic factor of the proton rich nucleus 34Ar compared to that of 46Ar. The results suggest that correlations, which generally reduce such spectroscopic factors, do not depend strongly on the neutron-proton asymmetry of the nucleus in this isotopic region as was reported in knockout reactions. A new method to reconstruct charged fragment four-momentum vectors from measured trajectories behind an open, large gap, magnetic dispersion element (a sweeper magnet) has been developed. In addition to the position and angle behind the magnet it includes the position measurement in the dispersive direction at the target. The first excited state in neutron-rich 23O was observed in a (2p1n) knock-out reaction from 26Ne on a beryllium target at a beam energy of 86 MeV/A. The state is unbound with respect to neutron emission and was reconstructed from the invariant mass from the 22O fragment and the neutron. It is unbound by 45(2) keV corresponding to an excitation energy of 2.8(1) MeV. The two-proton knockout reaction 9Be(26Ne,O2p) was used to explore excited unbound states of 23O and 24O. In 23O a state at an excitation energy of 2.79(13) MeV was observed. The Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) was used in conjunction with a large-gap dipole magnet (Sweeper) to measure neutron-unbound states in oxygen isotopes close to the neutron dripline. We have observed an excited state in the neutron-rich semi-magic nucleus O-23 for the first time. No such states have been found in previous searches using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The observation of a resonance in n-fragment coincidence measurements confirms the speculation in the literature that the lowest excited state is neutron unbound and establishes positive evidence for a 2.8(1) MeV excitation energy of the first excited state in O-23. We have searched for particle-bound 26-O and 28-F isotopes in the reaction products of secondary 27-F and 29-Ne beams, respectively. No events have been observed. Upper limits for the respective production cross sections by one-p-stripping reactions are established under the assumption that 26-O and 28-F are particle bound. A search for 19Mg was performed using projectile fragmentation of a 150 MeV/nucleon 36Ar beam. No events of 19Mg were observed. From the time-of-flight through the fragment separator an upper limit of 22 ns for the half-life of 19Mg was established.
