We calculate, to second order in the scattering length between two fermions, the Landau quasiparticle interaction for a low-density mixture of two fermion species with unequal densities at temperature zero. From the Landau parameters we evaluate the energy density and find agreement with the result of Kanno, Prog. Theor. Phys. 44, 813 (1970). The calculations are then extended to the case of two fermion components with different total densities, each with two spin components, a situation of interest in nuclear physics and astrophysics, where the species are neutrons and protons. An interesting finding is that, for low proton concentrations, $x \ll 1$, the leading term in the energy density, beyond the $x^{5/3}$ contribution from the kinetic energy and the $x^2$ one due to the two-body interaction in the mean-field approximation, varies as $x^{7/3} \ln x$. We ask the question of how angular momentum is conserved in electroweak interaction processes. To introduce the problem with a minimum of mathematics, we first raise the same issue in elastic scattering of a circularly polarized photon by an atom, where the scattered photon has a different spin direction than the original photon, and note its presence in scattering of a fully relativistic spin-1/2 particle by a central potential. We then consider inverse beta decay in which an electron is emitted following the capture of a neutrino on a nucleus. While both the incident neutrino and final electron spins are antiparallel to their momenta, the final spin is in a different direction than that of the neutrino -- an apparent change of angular momentum. However, prior to measurement of the final particle, in all these cases angular momentum is indeed conserved, The apparent non-conservation of angular momentum arises in the quantum measurement process in which the measuring apparatus does not have an initially well-defined angular momentum, but is localized in the outside world. We generalize the discussion to massive neutrinos and electrons, and examine nuclear beta decay and electron-positron annihilation processes through the same lens, enabling physically transparent derivations of angular and helicity distributions in these reactions., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. Neutron stars contain neutron-rich matter with around 5% protons at nuclear saturation density. In this Letter, we consider equilibrium between bulk phases of matter based on asymmetric nuclear matter calculations using chiral effective field theory interactions rather than, as has been done in the past, by interpolation between the properties of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter. Neutron drip (coexistence of nuclear matter with pure neutrons) is well established, but from earlier work it is unclear whether proton drip (equilibrium between two phases, both of which contain protons and neutrons) is possible. We find that proton drip is a robust prediction of any physically reasonable equation of state, but that it occurs over a limited region of densities and proton fractions. We calculate the superfluid density of nucleons in disordered pasta phases in the inner crust of neutron stars using an effective medium approach which parallels that previously used for calculating the electrical conductivity of terrestrial matter. We allow for the effect of entrainment, the fact that the current density of one species of nucleon depends on the gradient of the phase not only of the same species but also of the other species. The superfluid density tensors for the perfectly ordered pasta phases are very anisotropic, and we derive expression for the effective superfluid densities of the disordered phases., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

In the so-called pasta phases predicted to occur in neutron star crusts, protons are able to move easily over large distances because the nuclear matter regions are extended in space. Consequently, electrical currents can be carried by protons, an effect not possible in conventional crystalline matter with isolated nuclei. With emphasis on the so-called lasagna phase, which has sheet-like nuclei, we describe the magnetic properties of the pasta phases allowing for proton superconductivity. We predict that these phases will be Type II superconductors and we calculate the energy per unit length of a flux line, which is shown to be strongly anisotropic. If, as seems likely, the pasta structure is imperfect, flux lines will be pinned and matter will behave as a good electrical conductor and flux decay times will be long. We explore constraints on the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich matter based on microscopic calculations up to nuclear densities and observations of neutron stars. In a previous work we showed that predictions based on modern nuclear interactions derived within chiral effective field theory and the observation of two-solar-mass neutron stars result in a robust uncertainty range for neutron star radii and the EOS over a wide range of densities. In this work we extend this study, employing both the piecewise polytrope extension from Hebeler et al. as well as the speed of sound model of Greif et al., and show that moment of inertia measurements of neutron stars can significantly improve the constraints on the EOS and neutron star radii., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, published version

We consider the scattering of dark matter particles from superfluid liquid $^4$He, which has been proposed as a target for their direct detection. Focusing on dark matter masses below ~1 MeV, we demonstrate from sum-rule arguments the importance of the production of single phonons with energies $\omega \lesssim 1$ meV. We show further that the anomalous dispersion of phonons in liquid $^4$He at low pressures [i.e., $d^2\omega(q)/dq^2>0$, where $q$ and $\omega(q)$ are the phonon momentum and energy] has the important consequence that a single phonon will decay over a relatively short distance into a shower of lower energy phonons centered on the direction of the original phonon. Thus the experimental challenge in this regime is to detect a shower of low energy phonons, not just a single phonon. We consider the elastic constants of phases with nonspherical nuclei, so-called pasta phases, predicted to occur in the inner crust of a neutron star. First, we treat perfectly ordered phases and give numerical estimates for lasagna and spaghetti when the pasta elements are spatially uniform: the results are in order-of-magnitude agreement with the numerical simulations of Caplan, Schneider, and Horowitz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 132701 (2018). We then turn to pasta phases without long-range order and calculate upper (Voigt) and lower (Reuss) bounds on the effective shear modulus and find that the lower bound is zero, but the upper bound is nonzero. To obtain better estimates, we then apply the self-consistent formalism and find that this predicts that the shear modulus of the phases without long-range order is zero if the pasta elements are spatially uniform. In numerical simulations, the pasta elements are found to be modulated spatially and we show that this modulation is crucial to obtaining a nonzero elastic moduli for pasta phases without long-range order. In the self-consistent formalism we find that, for lasagna, the effective shear modulus is linear in the elastic constants that do not vanish when the pasta elements are spatially uniform while, for spaghetti, it varies as the square root of these elastic constants. A number of properties of dense matter can be understood semiquantitatively in terms of simple physical arguments. We begin with the outer parts of neutron stars, and consider the density at which pressure ionization occurs, the density at which electrons become relativistic, the density at which neutrons drip out of nuclei, and the size of the equilibrium nucleus in dense matter. Subsequently, we treat the so-called "pasta" phases expected to occur at densities just below the density at which the transition from the crust to the liquid core of a neutron star occurs. We then consider aspects of superfluidity in dense matter. Estimates of pairing gaps in homogeneous nuclear matter are given, and the effect of the dense medium on the interaction between nucleons is described. The pasta phases predicted to occur near the inner boundary of the crust of a neutron star resemble liquid crystals, a smectic A in the case of sheet-like nuclei (lasagna) and the columnar phase in the case of rod-like nuclei (spaghetti). An important difference compared with usual liquid crystals is that the nucleons are superfluid. We develop the hydrodynamic equations for this system and use them to study collective oscillations. Nucleon superfluidity leads to important qualitative differences in the spectra of these oscillations and also increases their frequencies compared with ordinary liquid crystals. We develop a unified description, via the Boltzmann equation, of damping of gravitational waves by matter, incorporating collisions. We identify two physically distinct damping mechanisms -- collisional and Landau damping. We first consider damping in flat spacetime, and then generalize the results to allow for cosmological expansion. In the first regime, maximal collisional damping of a gravitational wave, independent of the details of the collisions in the matter is, as we show, significant only when its wavelength is comparable to the size of the horizon. Thus damping by intergalactic or interstellar matter for all but primordial gravitational radiation can be neglected. Although collisions in matter lead to a shear viscosity, they also act to erase anisotropic stresses, thus suppressing the damping of gravitational waves. Damping of primordial gravitational waves remains possible. We generalize Weinberg's calculation of gravitational wave damping, now including collisions and particles of finite mass, and interpret the collisionless limit in terms of Landau damping. We calculate the frequencies of collective modes of neutrons, protons and electrons in the outer core of neutron stars. The neutrons and protons are treated in a hydrodynamic approximation and the electrons are regarded as collisionless. The coupling of the nucleons to the electrons leads to Landau damping of the collective modes and to significant dispersion of the low-lying modes. We investigate the sensitivity of the mode frequencies to the strength of entrainment between neutrons and protons, which is not well characterized. Calculations of the effects of band structure on the neutron superfluid density in the crust of neutron stars made under the assumption that the effects of pairing are small [N. Chamel, Phys. Rev. C 85, 035801 (2012)] lead to moments of inertia of superfluid neutrons so small that the crust alone is insufficient to account for the magnitude of neutron star glitches. Inspired by earlier work on ultracold atomic gases in an optical lattice, we investigate fermions with attractive interactions in a periodic lattice in the mean-field approximation. The effects of band structure are suppressed when the pairing gap is of order or greater than the strength of the lattice potential. By applying the results to the inner crust of neutron stars, we conclude that the reduction of the neutron superfluid density is considerably less than previously estimated and, consequently, it is premature to rule out models of glitches based on neutron superfluidity in the crust., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The interaction between nuclei in the inner crust of neutron stars consists of two contributions, the so-called "direct" interaction and an "induced" one due to density changes in the neutron fluid. For large nuclear separations $r$ the contributions from nuclear forces to each of these terms are shown to be nonzero. In the static limit they are equal in magnitude but have opposite signs and they cancel exactly. We analyze earlier results on effective interactions in the light of this finding. We consider the properties of long-wavelength collective modes and, in particular, calculate the degree of mixing between the lattice phonons and the phonons in the neutron superfluid. Using microscopic theory, we calculate the net non-Coulombic contribution to the nucleus--nucleus interaction and show that, for large $r$, the leading term is due to exchange of two phonons and varies as $1/r^7$: it is an analog of the Casimir--Polder interaction between neutral atoms., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

In the two decades since the appearance of the book "Bose-Einstein Condensation" in 1995, there have been a number of developments in our understanding of dense matter. After a brief overview of neutron star structure and the Bose-Einstein condensed phases that have been proposed, we describe selected topics, including neutron and proton pairing gaps, the physics of the inner crust of neutron stars, where a neutron fluid penetrates a lattice of nuclei, meson condensates, and pairing in dense quark matter. We calculate the effect of a heat current on transporting $^3$He dissolved in superfluid $^4$He at ultralow concentration, as will be utilized in a proposed experimental search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM). In this experiment, a phonon wind will generated to drive (partly depolarized) $^3$He down a long pipe. In the regime of $^3$He concentrations $\tilde < 10^{-9}$ and temperatures $\sim 0.5$ K, the phonons comprising the heat current are kept in a flowing local equilibrium by small angle phonon-phonon scattering, while they transfer momentum to the walls via the $^4$He first viscosity. On the other hand, the phonon wind drives the $^3$He out of local equilibrium via phonon-$^3$He scattering. For temperatures below $0.5$ K, both the phonon and $^3$He mean free paths can reach the centimeter scale, and we calculate the effects on the transport coefficients. We derive the relevant transport coefficients, the phonon thermal conductivity and the $^3$He diffusion constants from the Boltzmann equation. We calculate the effect of scattering from the walls of the pipe and show that it may be characterized by the average distance from points inside the pipe to the walls. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of the $^3$He atoms is determined by the time dependent $^3$He diffusion equation, which describes the competition between advection by the phonon wind and $^3$He diffusion. As a consequence of the thermal diffusivity being small compared with the $^3$He diffusivity, the scale height of the final $^3$He distribution is much smaller than that of the temperature gradient. We consider the hydrodynamics of the outer core of a neutron star under conditions when both neutrons and protons are superfluid. Starting from the equation of motion for the phases of the wave functions of the condensates of neutron pairs and proton pairs we derive the generalization of the Euler equation for a onecomponent fluid. These equations are supplemented by the conditions for conservation of neutron number and proton number. Of particular interest is the effect of entrainment, the fact that the current of one nucleon species depends on the momenta per nucleon of both condensates. We find that the nonlinear terms in the Euler-like equation contain contributions that have not always been taken into account in previous applications of superfluid hydrodynamics. We apply the formalism to determine the frequency of oscillations about a state with stationary condensates and states with a spatially uniform counterflow of neutrons and protons. The velocities of the coupled sound-like modes of neutrons and protons are calculated from properties of uniform neutron star matter evaluated on the basis of chiral effective field theory. Elastic properties of the solid regions of neutron star crusts and white dwarfs play an important role in theories of stellar oscillations. Matter in compact stars is presumably polycrystalline and, since the elastic properties of single crystals of such matter are very anisotropic, it is necessary to relate elastic properties of the polycrystal to those of a single crystal. We calculate the effective shear modulus of polycrystalline matter with randomly oriented crystallites using a self-consistent theory that has been very successful in applications to terrestrial materials and show that previous calculations overestimate the shear modulus by approximately 28%., Comment: Preprint NORDITA-2015-16

We report microscopic calculations of the thermal conductivity, diffusion constant and thermal diffusion constant for classical solutions of $^3$He in superfluid $^4$He at temperatures $T \la 0.6$~K, where phonons are the dominant excitations of the $^4$He. We focus on solutions with $^3$He concentrations $\la \,10^{-3}$, for which the main scattering mechanisms are phonon-phonon scattering via 3-phonon Landau and Beliaev processes, which maintain the phonons in a drifting equilibrium distribution, and the slower process of $^3$He-phonon scattering, which is crucial for determining the $^3$He distribution function in transport. We use the fact that the relative changes in the energy and momentum of a $^3$He atom in a collision with a phonon are small to derive a Fokker-Planck equation for the $^3$He distribution function, which we show has an analytical solution in terms of Sonine polynomials. We survey the current status of understanding of pairing and superfluidity of neutrons and protons in neutron stars from a theoretical perspective, with emphasis on basic physical properties. During the past two decades, the blossoming of the field of ultracold atomic gases and the development of quantum Monte Carlo methods for solving the many-body problem have been two important sources of inspiration, and we shall describe how these have given insight into neutron pairing gaps. The equilibrium properties and collective oscillations of the inner crust of neutron stars, where neutrons paired in a $^1$S$_0$ state coexist with a lattice of neutron-rich nuclei, are also described. While pairing gaps are well understood at densities less than one tenth of the nuclear saturation density, significant uncertainties exist at higher densities due to the complicated nature of nucleon-nucleon interactions, the difficulty of solving the many-body problem under these conditions, and the increasing importance of many-nucleon interactions. At low energies nucleon-nucleon interactions are resonant and therefore supernova matter at subnuclear densities has many similarities to atomic gases with interactions dominated by a Feshbach resonance. We calculate the rates of neutrino processes involving nucleon-nucleon collisions and show that these are enhanced in mixtures of neutrons and protons at subnuclear densities due to the large scattering lengths. In the standard picture of the crust of a neutron star, matter there is simple: a body-centered-cubic (bcc) lattice of nuclei immersed in an essentially uniform electron gas. We show that at densities above that for neutron drip ($\sim4\times10^11$) g cm$^{-3}$ or roughly one thousandth of nuclear matter density, the interstitial neutrons give rise to an attractive interaction between nuclei that renders the lattice unstable. We argue that the likely equilibrium structure is similar to that in displacive ferroelectric materials such as BaTiO$_3$. As a consequence, properties of matter in the inner crust are expected to be much richer than previously appreciated and we mention consequences for observable neutron star properties., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We calculate the normal mass density of a paired Fermi gas at unitarity. The dominant contribution near the superfluid transition is from fermionic quasiparticle excitations, and is thus sensitive to the pairing gap. A comparison with the recent experiment of Sidorenkov et al. suggests that the superfluid gap near the transition temperature is larger than the BCS value, but the data do not permit a quantitative inference of the gap. Using a combination of results from exact mappings and from mean-field theory we explore the phase diagram of quasi-one-dimensional systems of identical fermions with attractive dipolar interactions. We demonstrate that at low density these systems provide a realization of a single-component one-dimensional Fermi gas with a generalized contact interaction. Using an exact duality between one-dimensional Fermi and Bose gases, we show that when the dipole moment is strong enough, bound many-body states exist, and we calculate the critical coupling strength for the emergence of these states. At higher densities, the Hartree-Fock approximation is accurate, and by combining the two approaches we determine the structure of the phase diagram. The many-body bound states should be accessible in future experiments with ultracold polar molecules.

Microscopic calculations of neutron matter based on nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory, combined with the recent observation of a 1.97 +- 0.04 M_sun neutron star, constrain the equation of state of neutron-rich matter at sub- and supranuclear densities. We discuss in detail the allowed equations of state and the impact of our results on the structure of neutron stars, the crust-core transition density, and the nuclear symmetry energy. In particular, we show that the predicted range for neutron star radii is robust. We present calculations of the hydrodynamics of the inner crust of neutron stars, where a superfluid neutron liquid coexists with a lattice of neutron-rich nuclei. The long-wavelength collective oscillations are combinations of phonons in the lattice and phonons in the superfluid neutrons. Motivated by a proposed experimental search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) utilizing neutron-$^3$He capture in a dilute solution of $^3$He in superfluid $^4 $He, we derive the transport properties of dilute solutions in the regime where the $^3$He are classically distributed and rapid $^3$He-$^3$He scatterings keep the $^3$He in equilibrium. Our microscopic framework takes into account phonon-phonon, phonon-$^3$He, and $^3$He-$^3$He scatterings. We then apply these calculations to measurements by Rosenbaum et al. [J.Low Temp.Phys. {\bf 16}, 131 (1974)] and by Lamoreaux et al. [Europhys.Lett. {\bf 58}, 718 (2002)] of dilute solutions in the presence of a heat flow. The flow of a uniform Bose gas at speeds greater than the Landau critical velocity, v_c, does not necessarily destroy superfluidity, but rather need only lead to a decrease of the superfluid mass density, {\rho}_s. Analyzing a weakly interacting Bose gas with a finite range interparticle interaction that leads to a Landau critical velocity at non-zero quasiparticle momentum, we explicitly construct the (non-uniform) condensate for fluid flow faster than v_c and calculate the accompanying decrease in {\rho}_s. In dilute mixtures of two atomic gases, interactions between two minority atoms acquire a contribution due to interaction with the majority component. Using thermodynamic arguments, we derive expressions for this induced interaction for both fermions and bosons for arbitrary strength of the interaction between the two components. We investigate neutrino processes for conditions reached in simulations of core-collapse supernovae. Where neutrino-matter interactions play an important role, matter is partially degenerate, and we extend earlier work that addressed the degenerate regime. We derive expressions for the spin structure factor in neutron matter, which is a key quantity required for evaluating rates of neutrino processes. We show that, for essentially all conditions encountered in the post-bounce phase of core-collapse supernovae, it is a very good approximation to calculate the spin relaxation rates in the nondegenerate limit. We develop a unified formalism for describing the interaction of gravitational waves with matter that clearly separates the effects of general relativity from those due to interactions in the matter. Using it, we derive a general expression for the dispersion of gravitational waves in matter in terms of correlation functions for the matter in flat spacetime. The self energy of a gravitational wave is shown to have contributions analogous to the paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions to the self energy of an electromagnetic wave. We show that puzzling recent experimental results on spin diffusion in a strongly interacting atomic gas may be understood in terms of the predicted spin diffusion coefficient for a generic strongly interacting system. Three important features play a central role: a) Fick's law for diffusion must be modified to allow for the trapping potential, b) the diffusion coefficient is inhomogeneous, due to the density variations in the cloud and c) the diffusion approximation fails in the outer parts of the cloud, where the mean free path is long., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, minor modifications to the text and figures in 2. version

We show that dipolar bosons and fermions confined in a quasi-one-dimensional ring trap exhibit a rich variety of states because their interaction is inhomogeneous. For purely repulsive interactions, with increasing strength of the dipolar coupling there is a crossover from a gas-like state to an inhomogeneous crystal-like one. For small enough angles between the dipoles and the plane of the ring, there are regions with attractive interactions, and clustered states can form., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

We study an impurity atom in a two-dimensional Fermi gas using variational wave functions for (i) an impurity dressed by particle-hole excitations (polaron) and (ii) a dimer consisting of the impurity and a majority atom. In contrast to three dimensions, where similar calculations predict a sharp transition to a dimer state with increasing interspecies attraction, we show that the polaron ansatz always gives a lower energy. However, the exact solution for a heavy impurity reveals that both a two-body bound state and distortions of the Fermi sea are crucial. This reflects the importance of particle-hole pairs in lower dimensions and makes simple variational calculations unreliable. A simple description of superfluid hydrodynamics in the inner crust of a neutron star is given. Particular attention is paid to the effect of the lattice of nuclei on the properties of the superfluid neutrons, and the effects of entrainment, the fact that some fraction of the neutrons are locked to the motion of the protons in nuclei.

We show that microscopic calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions constrain the properties of neutron-rich matter below nuclear densities to a much higher degree than is reflected in commonly used equations of state. Combined with observed neutron star masses, our results lead to a radius R = 9.7 - 13.9 km for a 1.4 M_{solar} star, where the theoretical range is due, in about equal amounts, to uncertainties in many-body forces and to the extrapolation to high densities., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; NORDITA-2010-45

Recently Mora and Chevy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 230402 (2010), arXiv:1003.0213v2], in studying the energy of an atomic Fermi gas consisting of a majority species, 1, and a minority species, 2, showed that, due to interatomic interactions, the energy density E of the gas has a contribution of the form E^(2)= f n_2^2 /2, where n_i is the density of species i. They attribute this term to a `modification of the single polaron properties due to Pauli blocking'. In this Comment, we demonstrate that E^(2) may equivalently be understood in terms of the familiar interaction between minority atoms induced by the majority component.

We consider the absorption spectrum of a Fermi gas mixed with a minority species when majority fermions are transferred to another internal state by an external probe. In the limit when the minority species is much more massive than the majority one, we show that the minority species may be treated as static impurities and the problem can be solved in closed form. The analytical results bring out the importance of vertex corrections, which change qualitatively the nature of the absorption spectrum. It is demonstrated that large line shifts are not associated with resonant interactions in general. We also show that the commonly used ladder approximation fails when the majority component is degenerate for large mass ratios between the minority and majority species and that bubble diagrams, which correspond to the creation of many particle--hole pairs, must be taken into account. To clarify the relation of energy shifts to scattering phase shifts in one-body and many-body problems, we examine their relation in a number of different situations. We derive, for a particle in a container of arbitrary shape with a short-range scattering center, a general result for the energy eigenvalues in terms of the s-wave scattering phase shift and the eigenstates in the absence of the scatterer. We show that, while the energy shifts for a spherical container are proportional to the phase shift over large ranges, those for a cubic container have a more complicated behavior. We connect our result to the description of energy shifts in terms of the scattering T-matrix. The general relation is extended to problems of particles in traps with smoothly varying potentials, including, e.g., the interaction of a small neutral atom with a Rydberg atom. We then consider the many-body problem for particles with a two-body interaction and show that the free energy change due to the interaction is proportional to an average of a generalized phase shift that includes the effects of the medium. We calculate the shift, due to interatomic interactions, of an optical transition in an atomic Fermi gas trapped in an optical lattice, as in recent experiments of Campbell {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 324}, 360 (2009). Using a pseudospin formalism to describe the density matrix of the internal two states of the optical transition, we derive a Bloch equation which incorporates both the spatial inhomogeneity of the probe laser field and the interatomic interactions. Expressions are given for the frequency shift as a function of the pulse duration, detuning of the probe laser, and the spatial dependence of the electric field of the probe beam. We study many-body contributions to the effective interaction between fermions in a three-component Fermi mixture. We find that effective interactions induced by the third component can lead to a phase diagram different from that predicted if interactions with the third component are neglected. As a result, in a confining potential a superfluid shell structure can arise even for equal populations of the components. We also find a critical temperature for the BCS transition in a 6Li mixture which can deviate strongly from the one in a weakly interacting two-component system., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We consider the spin response of a normal Fermi liquid with noncentral interactions under conditions intermediate between the collisionless and hydrodynamic regimes. This problem is of importance for calculations of neutrino properties in dense matter. By expressing the deviation of the quasiparticle distribution function from equilibrium in terms of eigenfunctions of the transport equation under the combined influence of collisions and an external field, we derive a closed expression for the spin-density--spin-density response function and compare its predictions with that of a relaxation time approximation. We calculate neutrino processes involving two nucleons at subnuclear densities using chiral effective field theory. Shorter-range noncentral forces reduce the neutrino rates significantly compared with the one-pion exchange approximation currently used in supernova simulations. For densities rho < 10^{14} g cm^{-3}, we find that neutrino rates are well constrained by nuclear interactions and nucleon-nucleon scattering data. We present a unified approach to neutrino processes in nucleon matter based on Landau's theory of Fermi liquids that includes one- and two-quasiparticle-quasihole pair states as well as mean-field effects. We show how rates of neutrino processes involving two nucleons may be calculated in terms of the collision integral in the Landau transport equation for quasiparticles. Using a relaxation time approximation, we solve the transport equation for density and spin-density fluctuations and derive a general form for the response functions. We apply our approach to neutral-current processes in neutron matter, where the spin response function is crucial for calculations of neutrino elastic and inelastic scattering, neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung and absorption from strongly-interacting nucleons. We calculate the relaxation rates using modern nuclear interactions and including many-body contributions, and find that rates of neutrino processes are reduced compared with estimates based on the one-pion exchange interaction, which is used in current simulations of core-collapse supernovae., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures; NORDITA-2008-30; published version

Highly polarized mixtures of atomic Fermi gases constitute a novel Fermi liquid. We demonstrate how information on thermodynamic properties may be used to calculate quasiparticle scattering amplitudes even when the interaction is resonant and apply the results to evaluate the damping of the spin dipole mode. Using arguments based on sum rules, we derive a general result for the average shifts of rf lines in Fermi gases in terms of interatomic interaction strengths and two-particle correlation functions. We show that near an interaction resonance shifts vary inversely with the atomic scattering length, rather than linearly as in dilute gases, thus accounting for the experimental observation that clock shifts remain finite at Feshbach resonances., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. We study the quantum dynamics of a model for a vortex in a Bose gas with repulsive interactions in an anisotropic, harmonic trap. By solving the Schr\"odinger equation numerically, we show that the circulation of the vortex can undergo periodic reversals by quantum-mechanical tunneling. With increasing interaction strength or particle number, vortices become increasingly stable, and the period for reversals increases. Tunneling between vortex and antivortex states is shown to be described to a good approximation by a superposition of vortex and antivortex states (a Schr\"odinger cat state), rather than the mean-field state, and we derive an analytical expression for the oscillation period. We consider the properties of a gas of bosonic diatomic molecules in the limit when few of the molecules are dissociated. Taking into account the effects of dissociation and scattering among molecules and atoms, we calculate the dispersion relation for a molecule, and the thermal depletion of the condensate. We calculate the dependence of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature of a uniform gas on the atom-atom scattering length, and conclude that, for a broad Feshbach resonance, the condensation temperature increases as the molecular state becomes less strongly bound, thereby giving rise to a maximum in the transition temperature in the BEC-BCS crossover. We also argue on general grounds that, for a gas in a harmonic trap and for a narrow Feshbach resonance, the condensation temperature will decrease with increasing scattering length., Comment: 4 pages

We address the issue of determining an effective two-body interaction for mean-field calculations of energies of many-body systems. We show that the effective interaction is proportional to the phase shift, and demonstrate this result in the quasiclassical approximation when there is a trapping potential in addition to the short-range interaction between a pair of particles. We calculate numerically energy levels for the case of an interaction with a short-range square-well and a harmonic trapping potential and show that the numerical results agree well with the analytical expression.
