Abstract

International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

26. Maternal effects and their seasonal variability in European hake (Merluccius merluccius)

Abstract

Maternal attributes may influence the quantity and quality of offspring and hence, their survival. We evaluated the seasonal variability in maternal effects on developing oocytes and larvae of European hake Merluccius merluccius from the southern stock. Females were collected in 10 different years between 1999 and 2017 in the 3 spawning seasons identified in NW Spain (winter-spring, summer and autumn). Five indices of reproductive trait characteristics (batch fecundity [BF], relative fecundity [RBF], oocyte dry weight [ODW], oocyte diameter [OD] and oocyte lipid droplet diameter [ODD]) and 4 indices of maternal effects (total length [TL], gutted weight, hepatosomatic index [HSI] and Fulton’s K) were analysed. Additionally, larvae were sampled in 2017 during winter-spring and summer spawning peaks to study seasonal variability in their growth and allometry. The results revealed maternal effects on offspring attributes (for both oocytes and larvae) that differed among seasons in terms of productivity and oocyte quality; more and likely better-quality oocytes were produced in the winter-spring. BF, ODW and OD were influenced mostly by female size, ODD was related to HSI, and RBF was not influenced by any maternal attribute. The larval growth rate was similar, although summer larvae had more developed anterior body parts than winter-spring larvae. The temporal differences could be due to differences in maternal attributes and/or environmental conditions; these differences might impact larval survival and hence annual stock recruitment. A multi-year analysis of interactions between environmental conditions and maternal effects is required to understand the complex process of larval recruitment.

Abstract

A study of the reproductive biology of the Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) has been performed in Northern Iberian Atlantic waters (ICES Divisions 27.8.c and 27.9.a.N) based on samples of 14538 specimens (11-50 cm total length) from commercial landings and scientific surveys from 2011-2019. The spawning period was defined based on the monthly prevalence of active females (maturity stages 3, 4 and 5 according to Walsh maturity scale) and temporal variability of females gonado- and hepatosomatic indices (GSI/HSI). Length and age maturity ogives were also estimated for males and females pooling all sampled years together. The spawning period occurred from March to July, with a peak in June. In the 27.8.c area, the GSI, HSI and prevalence of active females increased from March to June and then GSI and prevalence decreased abruptly. In the 27.9.a.N, the peak of spawning was observed earlier (April-May) and with lower intensity than in 27.8.c, but sampling in 27.9.a area was limited to the northern zone (Spanish waters) and are not conclusive. L50 and A50 values estimated with annual data were 22.9 cm and 1.6 years old respectively for both sexes combined, similar to the values estimated with data only from the spawning period: 22.7 cm and 1.5 years old respectively for both sexes combined. Our results were compared with those from previous studies in the NE Atlantic.

Poster.-- ICES Annual Science Conference, 9-12 September 2019, Gothenburg, Sweden, Fisheries management has focused on optimizing yield and harvest while ensuring long-term sustainability. However, management has often pragmatically ignored the impact of fishing mortality on stock resilience and the synergetic effect of environmental forces in fitness and resilience, especially if regime shifts have occurred. European hake (Merluccius merluccius) is a demersal species widely distributed in Europe with an important fishing pressure. After a strong reduction in spawning stock biomass (SSB), the Southern Stock is undergoing a recovery plan since 2006 that allowed the rebuild of several stock indices, as SSB, although still is below historical values. Consequently recruitment still largely fluctuates and current analysis indicates that stock reproductive potential is lower than the expected for the existing spawning stock biomass. This study aims to detect and analyse if there have been regime shifts over three decades of European hake in the Galician shelf (NW Spain) that have affected its reproductive potential and resilience. A multivariate analysis was performed with data from 1982 to 2017, using different productivity parameters of the population and environmental and fisheries variables. The particular reproductive and complex spawning strategy of this stock (several spawning periods on what seems to represent different stock spawning components) is considered to understand the effect of external factors on stock life history and recruitment. Results of this type of analysis should be integrated into fisheries assessment and management for harvesting under precautionary limits of exploitation, The first author was supported by a Predoctoral Fellowship from the Fundación Tatiana Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno, as well as the support by Do* MaR (PhD program)
