We report the results of a comprehensive study of the spectroscopic binary (SB2) system HD 34736 hosting two chemically peculiar (CP) late B-type stars. Using new and archival observational data, we characterise the system and its components, including their rotation and magnetic fields. Fitting of the radial velocities yields $P_\mathrm{orb}=83.\!^\mathrm{d}219(3)$ and $e=0.8103(3)$. The primary component is a CP He-wk star with $T_{\mathrm{eff}A}=13000\pm500$ K and $\upsilon_\mathrm{e}\sin i\;=75\pm3$ km/s, while the secondary exhibits variability of Mg and Si lines, and has $T_{\mathrm{eff}B}=11500\pm1000$ K and $\upsilon_\mathrm{e}\sin i=110$-180 km/s. TESS and KELT photometry reveal clear variability of the primary component with a rotational period $P_{\mathrm{rot}A}=1.\!^\mathrm{d}279\,988\,5(11)$, which is lengthening at a rate of $1.26(6)$ s/yr. For the secondary, $P_{\mathrm{rot}B}=0.\!^\mathrm{d}522\,693\,8(5)$, reducing at a rate of $-0.14(3)$ s/yr. The longitudinal component $\langle B_\mathrm{z}\rangle$ of the primary's strongly asymmetric global magnetic field varies from $-6$ to +5 kG. Weak spectropolarimetric evidence of a magnetic field is found for the secondary star. The observed X-ray and radio emission of HD 34736 may equally be linked to a suspected T Tau-like companion or magnetospheric emission from the principal components. HD 54879 is the most recently discovered magnetic O-type star. Previous studies ruled out a rotation period shorter than 7 years, implying that HD 54879 is the second most slowly-rotating known magnetic O-type star. We report new high-resolution spectropolarimetric measurements of HD 54879, which confirm that a full stellar rotation cycle has been observed. We derive a stellar rotation period from the longitudinal magnetic field measurements of P = 2562+63-58 d (about 7.02 yr). The radial velocity of HD 54879 has been stable over the last decade of observations. We explore equivalent widths and longitudinal magnetic fields calculated from lines of different elements, and conclude the atmosphere of HD 54879 is likely chemically homogeneous, with no strong evidence for chemical stratification or lateral abundance nonuniformities. We present the first detailed magnetic map of the star, with an average surface magnetic field strength of 2954 G, and a strength for the dipole component of 3939 G. There is a significant amount of magnetic energy in the quadrupole components of the field (23%). We report detailed X-ray observations of the unique binary system $\epsilon$ Lupi, the only known short-period binary consisting of two magnetic early-type stars. The components have comparably strong, but anti-aligned magnetic fields. The orbital and magnetic properties of the system imply that the magnetospheres overlap at all orbital phases, suggesting the possibility of variable inter-star magnetospheric interaction due to the non-negligible eccentricity of the orbit. To investigate this effect, we observed the X-ray emission from $\epsilon$ Lupi both near and away from periastron passage, using the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer mission (NICER) X-ray Telescope. We find that the system produces excess X-ray emission at the periastron phase, suggesting the presence of variable inter-star magnetospheric interaction. We also discover that the enhancement at periastron is confined to a very narrow orbital phase range ($\approx 5\%$ of the orbital period), but the X-ray properties close to periastron phase are similar to those observed away from periastron. From these observations, we infer that the underlying cause is magnetic reconnection heating the stellar wind plasma, rather than shocks produced by wind-wind collision. Finally, by comparing the behavior of $\epsilon$ Lupi with that observed for cooler magnetic binary systems, we propose that elevated X-ray flux at periastron phase is likely a general characteristic of interacting magnetospheres irrespective of the spectral types of the constituent stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (20 pages, 17 figures)

Magnetism can greatly impact the evolution of stars. In some stars with OBA spectral types there is direct evidence via the Zeeman effect for stable, large-scale magnetospheres, which lead to the spin-down of the stellar surface and reduced mass loss. So far, a comprehensive grid of stellar structure and evolution models accounting for these effects was lacking. For this reason, we computed and studied models with two magnetic braking and two chemical mixing schemes in three metallicity environments with the MESA software instrument. We find notable differences between the subgrids, which affects the model predictions and thus the detailed characterisation of stars. We are able to quantify the impact of magnetic fields in terms of preventing quasi-chemically homogeneous evolution and producing slowly-rotating, nitrogen-enriched ("Group 2") stars. Magnetic fields can drastically change predictions of evolutionary models of massive stars via mass-loss quenching, magnetic braking, and efficient angular momentum transport, which we aim to quantify in this work. We use the MESA software instrument to compute an extensive main-sequence grid of stellar structure and evolution models, as well as isochrones, accounting for the effects attributed to a surface fossil magnetic field. The grid is densely populated in initial mass (3-60 M$_\odot$), surface equatorial magnetic field strength (0-50 kG), and metallicity (representative of the Solar neighbourhood and the Magellanic Clouds). We use two magnetic braking and two chemical mixing schemes and compare the model predictions for slowly-rotating, nitrogen-enriched ("Group 2") stars with observations in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We quantify a range of initial field strengths that allow for producing Group 2 stars and find that typical values (up to a few kG) lead to solutions. Between the subgrids, we find notable departures in surface abundances and evolutionary paths. In our magnetic models, chemical mixing is always less efficient compared to non-magnetic models due to the rapid spin-down. We identify that quasi-chemically homogeneous main sequence evolution by efficient mixing could be prevented by fossil magnetic fields. We recommend comparing this grid of evolutionary models with spectropolarimetric and spectroscopic observations with the goals of i) revisiting the derived stellar parameters of known magnetic stars, and ii) observationally constraining the uncertain magnetic braking and chemical mixing schemes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Polstar is a proposed NASA MIDEX space telescope that will provide high-resolution, simultaneous full-Stokes spectropolarimetry in the far ultraviolet, together with low-resolution linear polarimetry in the near ultraviolet. This observatory offers unprecedented capabilities to obtain unique information on the magnetic and plasma properties of the magnetospheres of hot stars. We describe an observing program making use of the known population of magnetic hot stars to test the fundamental hypothesis that magnetospheres should act to rapidly drain angular momentum, thereby spinning the star down, whilst simultaneously reducing the net mass-loss rate. Magnetic fields are important for stellar photospheres and magnetospheres, influencing photospheric physics and sculpting stellar winds. Observations of stellar magnetic fields are typically made in the visible, although infrared observations are becoming common. Here we consider the possibility of directly detecting magnetic fields at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths using high resolution spectropolarimetry, specifically considering the capabilities of the proposed Polstar mission. UV observations are particularly advantageous for studying wind resonance lines not available in the visible, but they can also provide many photospheric lines in hot stars. Detecting photospheric magnetic fields using the Zeeman effect and Least Squares Deconvolution is potentially more effective in the UV due to the much higher density of strong lines. We investigate detecting magnetic fields in the magnetosphere of a star using the Zeeman effect in wind lines, and find that this could be detectable at high S/N in an O or B star with a strong magnetic field. We consider detecting magnetic fields using the Hanle effect in linear polarization, which is complementary to the Zeeman effect, and could be more sensitive in photospheric lines of rapid rotators. The Hanle effect can also be used to infer circumstellar magnetism in winds. Detecting the Hanle effect requires UV observations, and a multi-line approach is key for inferring magnetic field properties. Recently a large number of hot magnetic stars have been discovered to produce auroral radio emission by the process of electron cyclotron maser emission (ECME). Such stars have been given the name of Main-sequence Radio Pulse emitters (MRPs). The phenomenon characterizing MRPs is very similar to that exhibited by planets like the Jupiter. However, one important aspect in which the MRPs differ from aurorae exhibited by planets is the upper cut-off frequency of the ECME spectrum. While Jupiter's upper cut-off frequency was found to correspond to its maximum surface magnetic field strength, the same for MRPs are always found to be much smaller than the frequencies corresponding to their maximum surface magnetic field strength. In this paper, we report the wideband observations (0.4--4.0 GHz) of the MRPs HD 35298 that enabled us to locate the upper cut-off frequency of its ECME spectrum. This makes HD 35298 the sixth MRP with a known constraint on the upper cut-off frequency. With these information, for the first time we investigate into what could lead to the premature cut-off. We review the existing scenarios attempting to explain this effect, and arrive at the conclusion that none of them can satisfactorily explain all the observations. We speculate that more than one physical processes might be in play to produce the observed characteristics of ECME cut-off for hot magnetic stars. Further observations, both for discovering more hot magnetic stars producing ECME, and to precisely locate the upper cut-off, will be critical to solve this problem., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Plaskett's "star" appears to be one of a small number of short-period binary systems known to contain a hot, massive, magnetic star. Building on the 2013 discovery investigation, we combine an extensive spectropolarimetric (Stokes $V$) dataset with archival photometry and spectropolarimetry to establish the essential characteristics of the magnetic field and magnetosphere of the rapidly rotating, broad-line component of the system. We apply Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) to infer the longitudinal magnetic field from each Stokes $V$ spectrum. Using the timeseries of longitudinal field measurements, in combination with CoRoT photometry and equivalent width measurements of magnetospheric spectral lines, we infer the rotation period of the magnetic star to be equal to $1.21551^{+0.00028}_{-0.00034}$ d. Modeling the Stokes $V$ LSD profiles with Zeeman Doppler Imaging, we produce the first {reliable} magnetic map of an O-type star. We find a magnetic field that is predominantly dipolar, but with an important quadrupolar component, and weak higher order components. The dipolar component has an obliquity near 90 deg and a polar strength of about 850 G, while the average field strength over the entire surface is 520 G. We update the calculations of the theoretical magnetospheric parameters, and in agreement with their predictions we identify clear variability signatures of the H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, and He II $\lambda 4686$ lines confirming the presence of a dense centrifugal magnetosphere surrounding the star. Finally, we report a lack of detection of radial velocity (RV) variations of the observed Stokes $V$ profiles, suggesting that historical reports of the large RV variations of the broad-line star's spectral lines may be spurious. Approximately 7% of massive stars host stable surface magnetic fields that are strong enough to alter stellar evolution through their effect on the stellar wind. It is therefore crucial to characterize the strength and structure of these large-scale fields in order to quantify their influence on massive star evolution. This is traditionally done by measuring the circular polarization caused by Zeeman splitting in optical photospheric lines, but we investigate here the possibility of detecting Stokes $V$ signatures in the wind-sensitive resonance lines formed in magnetically confined winds in the high opacity ultraviolet (UV) domain. Recent large-scale spectropolarimetric surveys have established that a small but significant percentage of massive stars host stable, surface dipolar magnetic fields with strengths on the order of kG. These fields channel the dense, radiatively driven stellar wind into circumstellar magnetospheres, whose density and velocity structure can be probed using ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy of wind-sensitive resonance lines. Coupled with appropriate magnetosphere models, UV spectroscopy provides a valuable way to investigate the wind-field interaction, and can yield quantitative estimates of the wind parameters of magnetic massive stars. We report a systematic investigation of the formation of UV resonance lines in slowly rotating magnetic massive stars with dynamical magnetospheres. We pair the Analytic Dynamical Magnetosphere (ADM) formalism with a simplified radiative transfer technique to produce synthetic UV line profiles. Using a grid of models, we examine the effect of magnetosphere size, the line strength parameter, and the cooling parameter on the structure and modulation of the line profile. We find that magnetic massive stars uniquely exhibit redshifted absorption at most viewing angles and magnetosphere sizes, and that significant changes to the shape and variation of the line profile with varying line strengths can be explained by examining the individual wind components described in the ADM formalism. The magnetic beta Cep pulsator xi^1 CMa has the longest rotational period of any known magnetic B-type star. It is also the only magnetic B-type star with magnetospheric emission that is known to be modulated by both rotation and pulsation. We report here the first unambiguous detection of a negative longitudinal magnetic field in xi^1 CMa (=-87 +/- 2 G in 2019 and =-207 +/- 3 G in 2020), as well as the results of ongoing monitoring of the star's Halpha variability. We examine evidence for deviation from a purely dipolar topology. We also report a new HST UV spectrum of xi^1 CMa obtained near magnetic null that is consistent with an equatorial view of the magnetosphere, as evidenced by its similarity to the UV spectrum of beta Cep obtained near maximum emission. W 601 (NGC 6611 601) is one of the handful of known magnetic Herbig Ae/Be stars. We report the analysis of a large dataset of high-resolution spectropolarimetry. The star is a previously unreported spectroscopic binary, consisting of 2 B2 stars with a mass ratio of 1.8, masses of 12 M$_\odot$ and 6.2 $M_\odot$, in an eccentric 110-day orbit. The magnetic field belongs to the secondary, W 601 B. The H$\alpha$ emission is consistent with an origin in W 601 B's centrifugal magnetosphere; the star is therefore not a classical Herbig Be star in the sense that its emission is not formed in an accretion disk. However, the low value of $\log{g} = 3.8$ determined via spectroscopic analysis, and the star's membership in the young NGC 6611 cluster, are most consistent with it being on the pre-main sequence. The rotational period inferred from the variability of the H$\alpha$ line and the longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_z \rangle$ is 1.13 d. Modelling of Stokes $V$ and $\langle B_z \rangle$ indicates a surface dipolar magnetic field $B_{\rm d}$ between 6 and $11$ kG. With its strong emission, rapid rotation, and strong surface magnetic field, W 601 B is likely a precursor to H$\alpha$-bright magnetic B-type stars such as $\sigma$ Ori E. By contrast, the primary is an apparently non-magnetic ($B_{\rm d} < 300$ G) pre-main sequence early B-type star. NGC 1624-2 is the most strongly magnetized O-type star known. Previous spectroscopic observations of this object in the ultraviolet provided evidence that it hosts a large and dense circumstellar magnetosphere. Follow-up observations obtained with the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} not only confirm that previous inference, but also suggest that NGC 1624-2's magnetosphere has a complex structure. Furthermore, an expanded spectropolarimetric time series shows a potential departure from a dipolar magnetic field geometry, which could mean that the strongest field detected at the surface of an O-type star is also topologically complex. Rapidly rotating early-type stars with strong magnetic fields frequently show H$\alpha$ emission originating in Centrifugal Magnetospheres (CMs), circumstellar structures in which centrifugal support due to magnetically enforced corotation of the magnetically confined plasma enables it to accumulate to high densities. It is not currently known whether the CM plasma escapes via Centrifugal Breakout (CB), or by an unidentified leakage mechanism. We have conducted the first comprehensive examination of the H$\alpha$ emission properties of all stars currently known to display CM-pattern emission. We find that the onset of emission is dependent primarily on the area of the CM, which can be predicted simply by the value $B_{\rm K}$ of the magnetic field at the Kepler corotation radius $R_{\rm K}$. Emission strength is strongly sensitive to both CM area and $B_{\rm K}$. Emission onset and strength are {\em not} dependent on effective temperature, luminosity, or mass-loss rate. These results all favour a CB scenario, however the lack of intrinsic variability in any CM diagnostics indicates that CB must be an essentially continuous process, i.e.\ it effectively acts as a leakage mechanism. We also show that the emission profile shapes are approximately scale-invariant, i.e.\ they are broadly similar across a wide range of emission strengths and stellar parameters. While the radius of maximum emission correlates closely as expected to $R_{\rm K}$, it is always larger, contradicting models that predict that emission should peak at $R_{\rm K}$., Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we present results from the spectropolarimetric follow-up of photometrically selected candidate magnetic B stars from the MOBSTER project. Out of four observed targets, one (HD 38170) is found to host a detectable surface magnetic field, with a maximum longitudinal field measurement of 105$\pm$14 G. This star is chemically peculiar and classified as an $\alpha^2$ CVn variable. Its detection validates the use of TESS to perform a photometric selection of magnetic candidates. Furthermore, upper limits on the strength of a putative dipolar magnetic field are derived for the remaining three stars, and we report the discovery of a previously unknown spectroscopic binary system, HD 25709. The time evolution of angular momentum and surface rotation of massive stars is strongly influenced by fossil magnetic fields via magnetic braking. We present a new module containing a simple, comprehensive implementation of such a field at the surface of a massive star within the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) software instrument. We test two limiting scenarios for magnetic braking: distributing the angular momentum loss throughout the star in the first case, and restricting the angular momentum loss to a surface reservoir in the second case. We perform a systematic investigation of the rotational evolution using a grid of OB star models with surface magnetic fields ($M_\star=5-60$ M$_\odot$, $\Omega/\Omega_{\rm crit} =0.2-1.0$, $B_{\rm p} =1-20$ kG). We then employ a representative grid of B-type star models ($M_\star=5, 10, 15$ M$_\odot$, $\Omega/\Omega_{\rm crit} =0.2 , 0.5, 0.8$, $B_{\rm p} = 1, 3 ,10, 30$ kG) to compare to the results of a recent self-consistent analysis of the sample of known magnetic B-type stars. We infer that magnetic massive stars arrive at the zero age main sequence with a range of rotation rates, rather than with one common value. In particular, some stars are required to have close-to-critical rotation at the ZAMS. In this contribution, we present the MOBSTER Collaboration, a large community effort to leverage high-precision photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) in order to characterize the variability of magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars. These data can be used to probe the varying column density of magnetospheric plasma along the line of sight for OB stars, thus improving our understanding of the interaction between surface magnetic fields and massive star winds. They can also be used to map out the brightness inhomogeneities present on the surfaces of Ap/Bp stars, informing present models of atomic diffusion in their atmospheres. Our multi-view metric learning framework enables robust characterization of star categories by directly learning to discriminate in a multi-faceted feature space, thus, eliminating the need to combine feature representations prior to fitting the machine learning model. We also demonstrate how to extend standard multi-view learning, which employs multiple vectorized views, to the matrix-variate case which allows very novel variable star signature representations. The performance of our proposed methods is evaluated on the UCR Starlight and LINEAR datasets. It was recently claimed that the magnetic O-type star HD 54879 exhibits important radial velocity variability indicative of its presence in a spectroscopic binary. More remarkably, it was furthermore reported that the star underwent a short, sudden variation in spectral type and magnetic field. In this Letter we examine new Narval and ESPaDOnS data of this star in addition to the previously-published FORS2 data and conclude that both the reported velocity variations and the sudden spectral and magnetic changes are spurious., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS 2019 November 15. HD 62658 (B9p V) is a little-studied chemically peculiar star. Light curves obtained by the Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT) and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) show clear eclipses with a period of about 4.75 d, as well as out-of-eclipse brightness modulation with the same 4.75 d period, consistent with synchronized rotational modulation of surface chemical spots. High-resolution ESPaDOnS circular spectropolarimetry shows a clear Zeeman signature in the line profile of the primary; there is no indication of a magnetic field in the secondary. PHOEBE modelling of the light curve and radial velocities indicates that the two components have almost identical masses of about 3 M$_\odot$. The primary's longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_z \rangle$ varies between about $+100$ and $-250$ G, suggesting a surface magnetic dipole strength $B_{\rm d} = 850$~G. Bayesian analysis of the Stokes $V$ profiles indicates $B_{\rm d} = 650$~G for the primary and $B_{\rm d} < 110$ G for the secondary. The primary's line profiles are highly variable, consistent with the hypothesis that the out-of-eclipse brightness modulation is a consequence of rotational modulation of that star's chemical spots. We also detect a residual signal in the light curve after removal of the orbital and rotational modulations, which might be pulsational in origin; this could be consistent with the weak line profile variability of the secondary. This system represents an excellent opportunity to examine the consequences of magnetic fields for stellar structure via comparison of two stars that are essentially identical with the exception that one is magnetic. Magnetic confinement of stellar winds leads to the formation of magnetospheres, which can be sculpted into Centrifugal Magnetospheres (CMs) by rotational support of the corotating plasma. The conditions required for the CMs of magnetic early B-type stars to yield detectable emission in H$\alpha$ -- the principal diagnostic of these structures -- are poorly constrained. A key reason is that no detailed study of the magnetic and rotational evolution of this population has yet been performed. Using newly determined rotational periods, modern magnetic measurements, and atmospheric parameters determined via spectroscopic modelling, we have derived fundamental parameters, dipolar oblique rotator models, and magnetospheric parameters for 56 early B-type stars. Comparison to magnetic A- and O-type stars shows that the range of surface magnetic field strength is essentially constant with stellar mass, but that the unsigned surface magnetic flux increases with mass. Both the surface magnetic dipole strength and the total magnetic flux decrease with stellar age, with the rate of flux decay apparently increasing with stellar mass. We find tentative evidence that multipolar magnetic fields may decay more rapidly than dipoles. Rotational periods increase with stellar age, as expected for a magnetic braking scenario. Without exception, all stars with H$\alpha$ emission originating in a CM are 1) rapid rotators, 2) strongly magnetic, and 3) young, with the latter property consistent with the observation that magnetic fields and rotation both decrease over time., Comment: 34 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we describe an analysis of the MiMeS Survey of O-type stars to explore the range of dipolar field strengths permitted by the polarisation spectra that do not yield a magnetic detection. We directly model the Stokes V profiles with a dipolar topology model using Bayesian inference. The noise statistics of the Stokes V profiles are in excellent agreement with those of the null profiles. Using a Monte-Carlo approach we conclude that a model in which all the stars in our sample were to host a 100\,G, dipolar magnetic field can be ruled out by the MiMeS data. Furthermore, if all the stars with no detection were to host a magnetic field just below their detection limit, the inferred distribution in strength of these undetected fields would be distinct from the known distribution in strength of the known magnetic O-type stars. This indicates that the Initial magnetic (B-)field Function (IBF) is likely bimodal -- young O-type stars are expected to either have weak/absent magnetic fields, or strong magnetic fields. We also find that better upper limits, by at least a factor of 10, would have been necessary to rule out a detection bias as an explanation for the apparent lack of evolved main-sequence magnetic O-type stars reported in the literature, and we conclude that the MiMeS survey cannot confirm or refute a magnetic flux decay in O-type stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper we introduce the MOBSTER collaboration and lay out its scientific goals. We present first results based on the analysis of nineteen previously known magnetic O, B and A stars observed in 2-minute cadence in sectors 1 and 2 of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. We derive precise rotational periods from the newly obtained light curves and compare them to previously published values. We also discuss the overall photometric phenomenology of the known magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars and propose an observational strategy to augment this population by taking advantage of the high-quality observations produced by TESS., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS (2019 April 22)

Surface magnetic fields have a strong impact on stellar mass loss and rotation and, as a consequence, on the evolution of massive stars. In this work we study the influence of an evolving dipolar surface fossil magnetic field with an initial field strength of 4 kG on the characteristics of 15 M$_{\odot}$ solar metallicity models using the Geneva stellar evolution code. Non-rotating and rotating models considering two different scenarios for internal angular momentum transport are computed, including magnetic field evolution, mass-loss quenching, and magnetic braking. Magnetic field evolution results in weakening the initially strong magnetic field, however, in our models an observable magnetic field is still maintained as the star evolves towards the red supergiant phase. At the given initial mass of the models, mass-loss quenching is modest. Magnetic braking greatly enhances chemical element mixing if radial differential rotation is allowed for, on the other hand, the inclusion of surface magnetic fields yields a lower surface enrichment in the case of near solid-body rotation. Models including surface magnetic fields show notably different trends on the Hunter diagram (plotting nitrogen abundance vs $v \sin i$) compared to those that do not. The magnetic models agree qualitatively with the anomalous `Group 2 stars', showing slow surface rotation and high surface nitrogen enhancement on the main sequence., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Atmospheric parameters determined via spectral modelling are unavailable for many of the known magnetic early B-type stars. We utilized high-resolution spectra together with NLTE models to measure effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff}$ and surface gravities $\log{g}$ of stars for which these measurements are not yet available. We find good agreement between our $T_{\rm eff}$ measurements and previous results obtained both photometrically and spectroscopically. For $\log{g}$, our results are compatible with previous spectroscopic measurements; however, surface gravities of stars previously determined photometrically have been substantially revised. We furthermore find that $\log{g}$ measurements obtained with HARPSpol are typically about 0.1 dex lower than those from comparable instruments. Luminosities were determined using Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes. We find Gaia parallaxes to be unreliable for bright stars ($V<6$ mag) and for binaries; in these cases we reverted to Hipparcos parallaxes. In general we find luminosities systematically lower than those previously reported. Comparison of $\log{g}$ and $\log{L}$ to available rotational and magnetic measurements shows no correlation between either parameter with magnetic data, but a clear slow-down in rotation with both decreasing $\log{g}$ and increasing $\log{L}$, a result compatible with the expectation that magnetic braking should lead to rapid magnetic spindown that accelerates with increasing mass-loss., Comment: 21 pages, 3 tables, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we present high-resolution HST/COS observations of the extreme magnetic O star NGC 1624-2. These represent the first ultraviolet spectra of this archetypal object. We examine the variability of its wind-sensitive resonance lines, comparing it to that of other known magnetic O stars. In particular, the observed variations in the profiles of the CIV and SiIV doublets between low state and high state are the largest observed in any magnetic O-type star, consistent with the expected properties of NGC 1624-2's magnetosphere. We also observe a redshifted absorption component in the low state, a feature not seen in most stars. NU Ori is a massive spectroscopic and visual binary in the Orion Nebula Cluster, with 4 components: Aa, Ab, B, and C. The B0.5 primary (Aa) is one of the most massive B-type stars reported to host a magnetic field. We report the detection of a spectroscopic contribution from the C component in high-resolution ESPaDOnS spectra, which is also detected in a Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) dataset. Radial velocity (RV) measurements of the inner binary (designated Aab) yield an orbital period of 14.3027(7) d. The orbit of the third component (designated C) was constrained using both RVs and interferometry. We find C to be on a mildly eccentric 476(1) d orbit. Thanks to spectral disentangling of mean line profiles obtained via least-squares deconvolution we show that the Zeeman Stokes $V$ signature is clearly associated with C, rather than Aa as previously assumed. The physical parameters of the stars were constrained using both orbital and evolutionary models, yielding $M_{\rm Aa} = 14.9 \pm 0.5 M_\odot$, $M_{\rm Ab} = 3.9 \pm 0.7 M_\odot$, and $M_{\rm C} = 7.8 \pm 0.7 M_\odot$. The rotational period obtained from longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_z \rangle$ measurements is $P_{\rm rot} = 1.09468(7)$ d, consistent with previous results. Modeling of $\langle B_z \rangle$ indicates a surface dipole magnetic field strength of $\sim 8$ kG. NU Ori C has a magnetic field strength, rotational velocity, and luminosity similar to many other stars exhibiting magnetospheric H$\alpha$ emission, and we find marginal evidence of emission at the expected level ($\sim$1% of the continuum)., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

One of the defining processes which govern massive star evolution is their continuous mass loss via dense, supersonic line-driven winds. In the case of those OB stars which also host a surface magnetic field, the interaction between that field and the ionized outflow leads to complex circumstellar structures known as magnetospheres. In this contribution, we review recent developments in the field of massive star magnetospheres, including current efforts to characterize the largest magnetosphere surrounding an O star: that of NGC 1624-2. We also discuss the potential of the `analytic dynamical magnetosphere' (ADM) model to interpret multi-wavelength observations. HD 156324 is an SB3 (B2V/B5V/B5V) system in the Sco OB4 association. The He-strong primary possesses both a strong magnetic field, and H$\alpha$ emission believed to originate in its Centrifugal Magnetosphere (CM). We analyse a large spectroscopic and high-resolution spectropolarimetric dataset. The radial velocities (RVs) indicate that the system is composed of two sub-systems, which we designate A and B. Period analysis of the RVs of the three components yields orbital periods $P_{\rm orb} = 1.5806(1)$~d for the Aa and Ab components, and 6.67(2)~d for the B component, a PGa star. Period analysis of the longitudinal magnetic field \bz~and H$\alpha$ equivalent widths, which should both be sensitive to the rotational period $P_{\rm rot}$ of the magnetic Aa component, both yield $\sim$1.58~d. Since $P_{\rm orb} = P_{\rm rot}$ Aa and Ab must be tidally locked. Consistent with this, the orbit is circularized, and the rotational and orbital inclinations are identical within uncertainty, as are the semi-major axis and the Kepler corotation radius. The star's H$\alpha$ emission morphology differs markedly from both theoretical and observational expectations in that there is only one, rather than two, emission peaks. We propose that this unusual morphology may be a consequence of modification of the gravitocentrifugal potential by the presence of the close stellar companion. Recent spectropolarimetric surveys of bright, hot stars have found that ~10% of OB-type stars contain strong (mostly dipolar) surface magnetic fields (~kG). The prominent paradigm describing the interaction between the stellar winds and the surface magnetic field is the magnetically confined wind shock (MCWS) model. In this model, the stellar wind plasma is forced to move along the closed field loops of the magnetic field, colliding at the magnetic equator, and creating a shock. As the shocked material cools radiatively it will emit X-rays. Therefore, X-ray spectroscopy is a key tool in detecting and characterizing the hot wind material confined by the magnetic fields of these stars. Some B-type stars are found to have very short rotational periods. The effects of the rapid rotation on the X-ray production within the magnetosphere have yet to be explored in detail. The added centrifugal force due to rapid rotation is predicted to cause faster wind outflows along the field lines, leading to higher shock temperatures and harder X-rays. However, this is not observed in all rapidly rotating magnetic B-type stars. In order to address this from a theoretical point of view, we use the X-ray Analytical Dynamical Magnetosphere (XADM) model, originally developed for slow rotators, with an implementation of new rapid rotational physics. Using X-ray spectroscopy from ESA's XMM-Newton space telescope, we observed 5 rapidly rotating B-type stars to add to the previous list of observations. Comparing the observed X-ray luminosity and hardness ratio to that predicted by the XADM allows us to determine the role the added centrifugal force plays in the magnetospheric X-ray emission of these stars., Comment: IAUS Conference Proceedings

Large-scale dipolar surface magnetic fields have been detected in a fraction of OB stars, however only few stellar evolution models of massive stars have considered the impact of these fossil fields. We are performing 1D hydrodynamical model calculations taking into account evolutionary consequences of the magnetospheric-wind interactions in a simplified parametric way. Two effects are considered: i) the global mass-loss rates are reduced due to mass-loss quenching, and ii) the surface angular momentum loss is enhanced due to magnetic braking. As a result of the magnetic mass-loss quenching, the mass of magnetic massive stars remains close to their initial masses. Thus magnetic massive stars - even at Galactic metallicity - have the potential to be progenitors of `heavy' stellar mass black holes. Similarly, at Galactic metallicity, the formation of pair instability supernovae is plausible with a magnetic progenitor., Comment: to appear in Proceedings of IAU Symposium 329

The groundbreaking detection of gravitational waves produced by the inspiralling and coalescence of the black hole (BH) binary GW150914 confirms the existence of "heavy" stellar-mass BHs with masses >25 Msun. Initial modelling of the system by Abbott et al. (2016a) supposes that the formation of black holes with such large masses from the evolution of single massive stars is only feasible if the wind mass-loss rates of the progenitors were greatly reduced relative to the mass-loss rates of massive stars in the Galaxy, concluding that heavy BHs must form in low-metallicity (Z < 0.25-0.5 Zsun) environments. However, strong surface magnetic fields also provide a powerful mechanism for modifying mass loss and rotation of massive stars, independent of environmental metallicity (ud-Doula & Owocki 2002; ud-Doula et al. 2008). In this paper we explore the hypothesis that some heavy BHs, with masses >25 Msun such as those inferred to compose GW150914, could be the natural end-point of evolution of magnetic massive stars in a solar-metallicity environment. Using the MESA code, we developed a new grid of single, non-rotating, solar metallicity evolutionary models for initial ZAMS masses from 40-80 Msun that include, for the first time, the quenching of the mass loss due to a realistic dipolar surface magnetic field. The new models predict TAMS masses that are significantly greater than those from equivalent non-magnetic models, reducing the total mass lost by a strongly magnetized 80 Msun star during its main sequence evolution by 20 Msun. Magnetic B-type stars exhibit photometric variability due to diverse causes, and consequently on a variety of timescales. We present the analysis performed on spectropolarimetric data of 97 O-type targets included in the framework of the MiMeS (Magnetism in Massive Stars) Survey. Mean Least-Squares Deconvolved Stokes I and V line profiles were extracted for each observation, from which we measured the radial velocity, rotational and non-rotational broadening velocities, and longitudinal magnetic field. The investigation of the Stokes I profiles led to the discovery of 2 new multi-line spectroscopic systems (HD46106, HD204827) and confirmed the presence of a suspected companion in HD37041. We present a modified strategy of the Least-Squares Deconvolution technique aimed at optimising the detection of magnetic signatures while minimising the detection of spurious signatures in Stokes V. Using this analysis, we confirm the detection of a magnetic field in 6 targets previously reported as magnetic by the MiMeS collaboration (HD108, HD47129A2, HD57682, HD148937, CPD-28 2561, and NGC 1624-2), as well as report the presence of signal in Stokes V in 3 new magnetic candidates (HD36486, HD162978, HD199579). Overall, we find a magnetic incidence rate of 7+/-3%, for 108 individual O stars (including all O-type components part of multi-line systems), with a median uncertainty of the longitudinal field measurements of about 50\,G. An inspection of the data reveals no obvious biases affecting the incidence rate or the preference for detecting magnetic signatures in the magnetic stars. Similar to A- and B-type stars, we find no link between the stars' physical properties (e.g. Teff, mass, age) and the presence of a magnetic field. We present 16 new, and confirm 7 previously identified, DA white dwarfs in the Kepler field through ground-based spectroscopy with the Hale 200", Kitt Peak 4-meter, and Bok 2.3-meter telescopes. Using atmospheric models we determine their effective temperatures and surface gravities to constrain their position with respect to the ZZ Ceti (DA pulsator) instability strip, and look for the presence or absence of pulsation with Kepler's unprecedented photometry. Our results are as follows: i) From our measurements of temperature and surface gravity, 12 of the 23 DA white dwarfs from this work fall well outside of the instability strip. The Kepler photometry available for 11 of these WDs allows us to confirm that none are pulsating. One of these eleven happens to be a presumed binary, KIC 11604781, with a period of ~5 days. ii) The remaining 11 DA white dwarfs are instability strip candidates, potentially falling within the current, empirical instability strip, after accounting for uncertainties. These WDs will help constrain the strip's location further, as eight are near the blue edge and three are near the red edge of the instability strip. Four of these WDs do not have Kepler photometry, so ground-based photometry is needed to determine the pulsation nature of these white dwarfs. We employ high resolution spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry to derive the physical properties and magnetic characteristics of the multiple system HD 164492C, located in the young open cluster M20. The spectrum reveals evidence of 3 components: a broad-lined early B star (HD 164492C1), a narrow-lined early B star (HD 164492C2), and a late B star (HD 164492C3). Components C2 and C3 exhibit significant ($>100$ km/s) bulk radial velocity variations with a period of $12.5351(7)$ d that we attribute to eccentric binary motion around a common centre-of-mass. Component C1 exhibits no detectable radial velocity variations. Using constraints derived from modeling the orbit of the C2+C3 binary and from synthesis of the combined spectrum, we determine the approximate physical characteristics of the components. We conclude that a coherent evolutionary solution consistent with the published age of M20 implies a distance to the system of $0.9\pm 0.2$ kpc, corresponding to the smallest published values. We confirm the detection of a strong magnetic field in the combined spectrum. The field is clearly associated with the broad-lined C1 component of the system. Repeated measurement of the longitudinal magnetic field allows the derivation of the rotation period of the magnetic star, $P_{\rm rot}=1.36986(6)$ d. We derive the star's magnetic geometry, finding $i=63\pm 6$ deg, $\beta=33\pm 6$ deg and a dipole polar strength $B_{\rm d}=7.9^{+1.2}_{-1.0}$ kG. Strong emission - varying according to the magnetic period - is detected in the H$\alpha$ profile. This is consistent with the presence of a centrifugal magnetosphere surrounding the rapidly rotating magnetic C1 component., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

A significant fraction of massive main-sequence stars show strong, large-scale magnetic fields. The origin of these fields, their lifetimes, and their role in shaping the characteristics and evolution of massive stars are currently not well understood. We compile a catalogue of 389 massive main-sequence stars, 61 of which are magnetic, and derive their fundamental parameters and ages. The two samples contain stars brighter than magnitude 9 in the V band and range in mass between 5 and 100 Msun. We find that the fractional main-sequence age distribution of all considered stars follows what is expected for a magnitude limited sample, while that of magnetic stars shows a clear decrease towards the end of the main sequence. This dearth of old magnetic stars is independent of the choice of adopted stellar evolution tracks, and appears to become more prominent when considering only the most massive stars. We show that the decreasing trend in the distribution is significantly stronger than expected from magnetic flux conservation. We also find that binary rejuvenation and magnetic suppression of core convection are unlikely to be responsible for the observed lack of older magnetic massive stars, and conclude that its most probable cause is the decay of the magnetic field, over a time span longer than the stellar lifetime for the lowest considered masses, and shorter for the highest masses. We then investigate the spin-down ages of the slowly rotating magnetic massive stars and find them to exceed the stellar ages by far in many cases. The MiMeS project is a large-scale, high resolution, sensitive spectropolarimetric investigation of the magnetic properties of O and early B type stars. Initiated in 2008 and completed in 2013, the project was supported by 3 Large Program allocations, as well as various programs initiated by independent PIs and archival resources. Ultimately, over 4800 circularly polarized spectra of 560 O and B stars were collected with the instruments ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Narval at the T\'elescope Bernard Lyot, and HARPSpol at the European Southern Observatory La Silla 3.6m telescope, making MiMeS by far the largest systematic investigation of massive star magnetism ever undertaken. In this paper, the first in a series reporting the general results of the survey, we introduce the scientific motivation and goals, describe the sample of targets, review the instrumentation and observational techniques used, explain the exposure time calculation designed to provide sensitivity to surface dipole fields above approximately 100 G, discuss the polarimetric performance, stability and uncertainty of the instrumentation, and summarize the previous and forthcoming publications., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We observed NGC 1624-2, the O-type star with the largest known magnetic field Bp~20 kG), in X-rays with the ACIS-S camera onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our two observations were obtained at the minimum and maximum of the periodic Halpha emission cycle, corresponding to the rotational phases where the magnetic field is the closest to equator-on and pole-on, respectively. With these observations, we aim to characterise the star's magnetosphere via the X-ray emission produced by magnetically confined wind shocks. Our main findings are: (i) The observed spectrum of NGC 1624-2 is hard, similar to the magnetic O-type star Theta 1 Ori C, with only a few photons detected below 0.8 keV. The emergent X-ray flux is 30% lower at the Halpha minimum phase. (ii) Our modelling indicated that this seemingly hard spectrum is in fact a consequence of relatively soft intrinsic emission, similar to other magnetic Of?p stars, combined with a large amount of local absorption (~1-3 x 10^22 cm^-2). This combination is necessary to reproduce both the prominent Mg and Si spectral features, and the lack of flux at low energies. NGC 1624-2 is intrinsically luminous in X-rays (log LX emission ~ 33.4) but 70-95% of the X-ray emission produced by magnetically confined wind shocks is absorbed before it escapes the magnetosphere (log LX ISM corrected ~ 32.5). We have carried out a study of radio emission from a small sample of magnetic O- and B-type stars using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, with the goal of investigating their magnetospheres at low frequencies. These are the lowest frequency radio measurements ever obtained of hot magnetic stars. The observations were taken at random rotational phases in the 1390 and the 610 MHz bands. Out of the 8 stars, we detect five B-type stars in both the 1390 and the 610 MHz bands. The O-type stars were observed only in the 1390 MHz band, and no detections were obtained. We explain this result as a consequence of free-free absorption by the free-flowing stellar wind exterior to the closed magnetosphere. We also study the variability of individual stars. One star - HD 133880 - exhibits remarkably strong and rapid variability of its low frequency flux density. We discuss the possibility of this emission being coherent emission as reported for CU Vir by Trigilio et al. (2000)., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, submitted to MNRAS

We report magnetic and spectroscopic observations and modeling of the Of?p star CPD -28 2561. Using more than 75 new spectra, we have measured the equivalent width variations and examined the dynamic spectra of photospheric and wind-sensitive spectral lines. A period search results in an unambiguous 73.41 d variability period. High resolution spectropolarimetric data analyzed using Least-Squares Deconvolution yield a Zeeman signature detected in the mean Stokes V profile corresponding to phase 0.5 of the spectral ephemeris. Interpreting the 73.41 d period as the stellar rotational period, we have phased the equivalent widths and inferred longitudinal field measurements. The phased magnetic data exhibit a weak sinusoidal variation, with maximum of about 565 G at phase 0.5, and a minimum of about -335 G at phase 0.0, with extrema approximately in phase with the (double-wave) Halpha equivalent width variation. Modeling of the Halpha equivalent width variation assuming a quasi-3D magnetospheric model produces a unique solution for the ambiguous couplet of inclination and magnetic obliquity angles: (i, beta) or (beta, i)=(35 deg,90 deg). Adopting either geometry, the longitudinal field variation yields a dipole polar intensity Bd=2.6\pm 0.9~kG, consistent with that obtained from direct modelling of the Stokes V profiles. We derive a wind magnetic confinement parameter eta*\simeq 100, leading to an Alfv\'en radius RA\simeq 3-5~R*, and a Kepler radius RK\simeq 20~R*. This supports a physical scenario in which the Halpha emission and other line variability have their origin in an oblique, co-rotating 'dynamical magnetosphere' structure resulting from a magnetically channeled wind.
