The Taihape landslide is a large, deep-seated, translational rockslide in central North Island of New Zealand, one of over 7000 large landslides mapped in the late Neogene deposits of this area. This study examined its patterns of movement using high temporal resolution, high-precision monitoring and explored the relationships between the movement and triggering mechanisms. During the 30-year monitoring period, movement was always extremely slow, but included periods of faster and slower motion due to a combination of simultaneous basal sliding, internal plastic deformation and seasonal soil shrinkage and swelling. The data suggested that movement rate was not controlled by pore-water pressure or any other monitored parameter. Intervals of more rapid movement appear to follow toe erosion that debuttress the landslide mass, an example of which occurred following a flood in February 2004 that had a return period of about 100 years. The high-temporal and spatial frequency of the monitoring and the measurement precision of the instruments have allowed new insights into the complex movement patterns of deep-seated, slow moving rockslides. The patterns of movement observed here, and the techniques described to collect and analyse the data, are applicable to many slowly moving landslides in New Zealand, and to those occurring in similar environments worldwide. Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate mechanisms of progressive shear surface development using a series of specialised triaxial cell tests. Intact and remoulded samples of Gault Clay from the Ventnor Undercliff on the Isle of Wight in southern England were subjected to pore pressure reinflation (PPR) testing in a triaxial cell, in which failure is generated by increasing pore pressure under a constant total stress state. In addition, a novel very long term (>500days) creep test was undertaken, in which the sample eventually failed at a constant stress state below the failure envelope. The experiments showed that undisturbed samples of the Gault Clay failed in a brittle manner, generating a linear trend when plotted using the Saito technique. On the other hand, remoulded samples showed ductile behaviour, as indicated by a non-linear Saito trend. A number of otherwise identical PPR tests were conducted in which the rate of increase in pore water pressure was varied. These tests showed that strain rate generated at any point in the PPR tests depended on both the effective stress and the rate of change of effective stress. The latter is important because a change in stress generates a change in strain. Thus, whilst tests at different rates of change of effective stress are similar when plotted in q–p′ space and in strain–p′ space, they are markedly different in strain rate–p′ space. The long term creep test failed when the stress state had been constant for over 80days. This mechanism was reminiscent of creep rupture, occurring below the failure envelope defined in the conventional experiments. We conclude that first time failure in the Gault Clay is a progressive mechanism dominated by the development of micro-cracking, which leads to strain localisation and the development of one or more shear surfaces at failure. Whilst this mechanism may usually occur in response to a change in stress, the study indicates that failure can develop progressively. In the remoulded Gault Clay shear strains cannot localise along a singular shear surface. The results provide new insight into the mechanisms of landslide movement operating within the Ventnor landslide complex and indicate that present movements are likely to be occurring on a pre-existing shear surface. Abstract: The primary aim of this research was to study the relationship between landslide motion and its causes, with reference to large, slow moving, reactivated translational rock slides. Surface displacements of the 22×106 m3 Utiku landslide, in central North Island, New Zealand were measured using continuous GPS (cGPS), for three years. The nature of the movement of such slides has often been difficult to determine because of poor temporal and spatial monitoring resolutions. After removal of tectonic plate motion, the temporal pattern of the landslide's surface motion could be understood to arise from irregular episodes of faster (up-to-21mm/day) and slower (up to 26mm/yr) post-failure landslide displacement, and seasonal cyclic displacements of about 20mm/yr–10mm per half year in alternating directions. Intervals of faster motion gave rise to displacements of between 10 and 120mm per event. Faster displacement was associated mostly with basal sliding (mechanism 1), involving deformation within a thin clay seam as recorded by borehole inclinometer surveys. Slower surface displacement involved permanent internal deformation of the larger landslide mass, consisting of plastic deformation within the landslide body and/or slip along existing internal planes of weakness, and slip on the slide base (mechanism 2); it accounted for up to 26mm/yr of displacement at a mean angle of about 49° from the horizontal, indicating that the slide mass was thinning as it moved down slope. Seasonal cyclic displacements were synchronous with changes in pore pressure, suggesting that it is a shrink/swell process (mechanism 3) associated with wetting and recharge of groundwater during the wetter winter months, leading to a downslope movement, and soil shrinkage leading to upslope rebounds during the dryer summer months. The brief periods of faster displacement were triggered by seasonal peaks in pore pressure, linked to long periods (12 to 20weeks) of increased precipitation and lowered evapotranspiration. Faster displacement, however, was not arrested by lowering pore pressure or by any other monitored factor. Similarly, periods of slower displacement did not correlate with pore pressure changes, or with any other monitored factor. This study has shown that the annual movement pattern of a reactivated landslide is a combination of these processes that generate a complex overall movement record. The field measurements showed real variability arising from variations in rainfall and pore pressure, which were overprinted with measurement noise that may mask some other processes. Abstract: The Tessina landslide is a large, seasonally active slope failure located on the southern slopes of Mt. Teverone, in the Alpago valley of NE Italy, consisting of a complex system that has developed in Tertiary Flysch deposits. The landslide, which first became active in 1960, threatens two villages and is hence subject to detailed monitoring, with high quality data being collected using piezometers, inclinometers, extensometers, and through the use of a highly innovative, automated Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) system, which surveys the location of a large number of reflector targets once every 6 h. These systems form the basis of a warning system that protects the villages, but they also provide a very valuable insight into the patterns of movement of the landslide. In this paper, analysis is presented of the movement of the landslide, concentrating on the EDM dataset, which provides a remarkable record of surface displacement patterns. It is proposed that four distinct movement patterns can be established, which correspond closely to independently defined morphological assessments of the landslide complex. Any given block of material transitions through the four phases of movement as it progresses down the landslide, with the style of movement being controlled primarily by the groundwater conditions. The analysis is augmented with modelling of the landslide, undertaken using the Itasca FLAC code. The modelling suggests that different landslide patterns are observed for different parts of the landslide, primarily as a result of variations in the groundwater conditions. The model suggests that when a movement event occurs, displacements occur initially at the toe of the landslide, then retrogress upslope. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract Subaqueous slopes are susceptible to a broad range of failure mechanisms and deformation styles, many of which are not well characterised. We undertook novel laboratory-based testing using a Dynamic Back-Pressured Shearbox on samples collected from an area subject to ongoing slope failures, situated on the upper slope of New Zealand's Hikurangi Margin, to determine how increases in pore water and gas pressures generate shallow mass movement. Using both water and nitrogen gas we observed similar responses in both cases, indicating that behaviour is dominated by the normal effective stress state regardless of pore-fluid phase. Shear-strain accumulation, representing landslide movement, shows a slow episodic pattern, in common with many shallow terrestrial landslides. Our results are relevant for landslides occurring in shallow near surface sedimentary sequences but have implications for deep-seated landslide behaviour. They suggest that once movement initiates at a critical effective stress, its rate is regulated through dilation and pore expansion within the shear zone, temporarily increasing effective stress within a narrow shear band and suppressing rapid shear. Consequently, under certain conditions, shallow submarine landslides (e.g. spreading failures) can undergo slow episodic movement which allows them to accumulate large shear strains without accelerating to catastrophic movement even when they are unconstrained. Although subaqueous slopes on active continental margins are subject to a variety of failure styles, their movement mechanisms during earthquakes remain poorly constrained. A primary explanation is that few submarine landslides have been directly sampled for detailed investigation. We have conducted a series of dynamic shear experiments on samples recovered from the base of the Tuaheni Landslide Complex, located off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, to explore its behaviour during earthquakes. Our experiments suggest that whilst the basal landslide sediments can be prone to liquefaction in certain conditions, this is not a likely failure mechanism at the stress states operating in the low angled shear zone at the base of this landslide system. Instead, episodic landslide movement can occur through basal sliding when pore water pressures increase sufficiently to lower the shear zone effective stress to the material failure envelope. These low effective stress conditions are most likely to be reached during earthquakes that produce large amplitude, long duration ground shaking. The observed behaviour provides a credible mechanism through which subaqueous landslides moving on low angled shear zones in similar materials may be subject to episodic movement during earthquakes without undergoing catastrophic failure. Linking hard rock coastal cliff erosion to environmental drivers is challenging, with weak relationships commonly observed in comparisons of marine and subaerial conditions to the timing and character of erosion. The aim of this paper is to bring together datasets to explore how best to represent conditions at the coast and to test relationships with erosion, which on this coast is primarily achieved via rockfalls. On the N. Yorkshire coast in the UK we compare a continuously monitored microseismic dataset, regionally monitored coastal environmental conditions, modelled at-cliff conditions and periodic high-resolution 3D monitoring of changes to the cliff face over a 2-year period. Cliff-top microseismic ground motions are generated by a range of offshore, nearshore and at-cliff sources. We consider such ground motions as proxies for those conditions that promote the occurrence of rockfalls and erosion. Both these data and modelled at-cliff water levels provide improved insight into conditions at, and wave energy transfer to, the cliff. The variability in microseismic, modelled and regionally-monitored environmental data derives statistically significant relationships with increases in the occurrence of rockfalls. The results demonstrate a marine control on the total volume and size characteristics of rockfalls. The strongest relationships found are with rockfalls sourced from across the entire cliff, rather than just at the toe, indicating that the marine influence, albeit indirectly, extends above and beyond the area inundated. These results identify failure mechanisms driving erosion, where a range of processes unique to the coast trigger failure, but in a manner beyond purely wave action at the cliff toe. Greater erosion occurs at the cliff toe. However, comparing water level inundation frequency, microseismic energy transfer and erosion, we observe that heights up the cliff that correspond with water levels associated with low frequency, high energy storms, or more frequent inundation, do not experience increased erosion. Our results describe the relationship between inundation duration, energy transfer and erosion of hard rock cliffs, and illustrate the relative intensity of erosion response to variations in these conditions.
