Abstract

This study provides an analysis of atmospheric neutrino oscillations at the ESSnuSB far detector facility. The prospects of the two cylindrical Water Cherenkov detectors with a total fiducial mass of 540 kt are investigated over 10 years of data taking in the standard three-flavor oscillation scenario. We present the confidence intervals for the determination of mass ordering, $\theta_{23}$ octant as well as for the precisions on $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ and $|\Delta m_{31}^2|$. It is shown that mass ordering can be resolved by $3\sigma$ CL ($5\sigma$ CL) after 4 years (10 years) regardless of the true neutrino mass ordering. Correspondingly, the wrong $\theta_{23}$ octant could be excluded by $3\sigma$ CL after 4 years (8 years) in the case where the true neutrino mass ordering is normal ordering (inverted ordering). Abstract

Neutrino oscillation experiments provide a unique window in exploring several new physics scenarios beyond the standard three flavour. One such scenario is quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillation which tends to destroy the interference pattern of neutrinos reaching the far detector from the source. In this work, we study the decoherence in neutrino oscillation in the context of the ESSnuSB experiment. We consider the energy-independent decoherence parameter and derive the analytical expressions for P$_{\mu e}$ and P$_{\mu \mu}$ probabilities in vacuum. We have computed the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the decoherence parameters namely, $\Gamma_{21}$ and $\Gamma_{32}$ and found that the constraints on $\Gamma_{21}$ are competitive compared to the DUNE bounds and better than the most stringent LBL ones from MINOS/MINOS+. We have also investigated the impact of decoherence on the ESSnuSB measurement of the Dirac CP phase $\delta_{\rm CP}$ and concluded that it remains robust in the presence of new physics., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, Version accepted for publication in JHEP

Abstract

In this paper we study non-standard interactions mediated by a scalar field (SNSI) in the context of ESSnuSB experiment. In particular we study the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the SNSI parameters and also study the impact of SNSI in the measurement of the leptonic CP phase $\delta_{\rm CP}$. Existence of SNSI modifies the neutrino mass matrix and this modification can be expressed in terms of three diagonal real parameters ($\eta_{ee}$, $\eta_{\mu\mu}$ and $\eta_{\tau\tau}$) and three off-diagonal complex parameters ($\eta_{e \mu}$, $\eta_{e\tau}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$). Our study shows that the upper bounds on the parameters $\eta_{\mu\mu}$, $\eta_{\tau\tau}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$ depend upon how $\Delta m^2_{31}$ is minimized in the theory. However, this is not the case when one tries to measure the impact of SNSI on $\delta_{\rm CP}$. Further, we show that the CP sensitivity of ESSnuSB can be completely lost for certain values of $\eta_{ee}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$ for which the appearance channel probability becomes independent of $\delta_{\rm CP}$., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, Version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

The MicroMegas technology was selected by the ATLAS experiment at CERN to be adopted for the Small Wheel upgrade of the Muon Spectrometer, dedicated to precision tracking, in order to meet the requirements of the upcoming luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider. A large surface of the forward regions of the Muon Spectrometer will be equipped with 8 layers of MicroMegas modules forming a total active area of $1200\,m^{2}$. The New Small Wheel is scheduled to be installed in the forward region of $1.3<\vert \eta \vert <2.7$ of the ATLAS detector during the second long shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider. The New Small Wheel will have to operate in a high background radiation environment, while reconstructing muon tracks as well as furnishing information for the Level-1 trigger. The project requires fully efficient MicroMegas chambers with spatial resolution down to $100\,{\mu}m$, a rate capability up to about $15\,kHz/cm^{2}$ and operation in a moderate (highly inhomogeneous) magnetic field up to $B=0.3\,T$. The required tracking is linked to the intrinsic spatial resolution in combination with the demanding mechanical accuracy. Abstract

ATLAS (a toroidal LHC apparatus) is a general purpose experiment that will start its operation at the large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN in 2007. The ATLAS detector is designed to explore numerous physics processes by recording, measuring, and investigating the products emerging from proton-proton collisions at energies up to 14 TeV. High-precision muon momentum measurement (dp/p ~ 10% at [P.sub.T] = 1 TeV/c) over large areas using monitored drift tube (MDT) chambers is crucial for the ATLAS experiment. More than 1200 MDT chambers, consisting of approximately 370 000 drift tubes, will provide a total coverage of 5500 [m.sup.2]. Three Greek universities have taken the responsibility to construct 130 barrel inner small (BIS)-MDT chambers using 30 000 drift tubes of ~ 1.7 m length that have been quality tested before assembly. The design of the muon drift tubes aims at high detection efficiency (> 95%) and a spatial single tube resolution of < 80/[micro]m. This paper describes the cosmic ray test setup, which has been instrumented in order to verify that the BIS-MDT chamber Module-0 fulfills its design requirements. The analysis of its data shows that the chamber meets these requirements; it has low noise levels, uniform drift properties, good spatial resolution, and high particle detection efficiency. Abstract

ATLAS measurements of multi-boson production processes involving combinations of W, Z and isolated photons are summarized. Measurements using 7 TeV and at 8 TeV p-p collision data are presented. The measurements are performed using leptonic decay modes, including the invisible decay Z--> nunu, as well as semileptonic channels. Differential and total cross sections are presented and are used to place constraints on anomalous triple-gauge boson couplings. An overview of these results is given. The productions of multi-bosons in association with two forward jets at LHC are sensitive to quartic couplings between gauge bosons. We present the latest results of cross section measurements of multi-bosons and limits on anomalous quartic couplings (aQGC) using 8 TeV proton-proton collision data at ATLAS. The aQGC expected sensitivity of tri-bosons and vector boson scattering measurements for future high-luminosity LHC runs is discussed as well.

Abstract

In 2004, a combined system test was performed in the H8 beam line at the CERN SPS with a setup reproducing the geometry of sectors of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer, formed by three stations of Monitored Drift Tubes (MDT). The full ATLAS analysis chain was used to obtain the results presented in this paper. The basic design performances of the Muon Spectrometer were verified. The stability of MDT calibration constants, the alignment system using optical devices and high energy tracks, as well as the intrinsic sagitta resolution of the Muon Spectrometer were studied and found to agree with expectations. The reconstruction of muon tracks using the combined information from both the Inner Detector and the Muon Spectrometer are also presented. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

ATLAS (a toroidal LHC apparatus) is a general purpose experiment that will start its operation at the large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN in 2007. The ATLAS detector is designed to explore numerous physics processes by recording, measuring, and investigating the products emerging from proton-proton collisions at energies up to 14 TeV. High-precision muon momentum measurement (dp/p ∼ 10%at pT = 1 TeV/c) over large areas using monitored drift tube (MDT) chambers is crucial for the ATLAS experiment. More than 1200 MDT chambers, consisting of approximately 370 000 drift tubes, will provide a total coverage of 5500 m2. Three Greek universities have taken the responsibility to construct 130 barrel inner small (BIS)-MDT chambers using 30 000 drift tubes of ∼ 1.7m length that have been quality tested before assembly. The design of the muon drift tubes aims at high detection efficiency (> 95%) and a spatial single tube resolution of < 80 μm. This paper describes the cosmic ray test setup, which has been instrumented in order to verify that the BIS-MDT chamber Module-0 fulfills its design requirements. The analysis of its data shows that the chamber meets these requirements; it has low noise levels, uniform drift properties, good spatial resolution, and high particle detection efficiency.

Abstract

We analyze the energy density distribution in harronic final states as a function of their total transverse energy measured in the segmented central calorimeter of the UA2 detector. The energy dependence of collective shape variables is investigated. The data, collected at the CERN "p Collider at " GeV, exhibit strong variations in all these variables over the transverse energy range between 15 and 210 GeV, corresponding to substantial modifications in the structure of multihadronic final states. The evolution of the energy density distribution and of the collective shape variables shows a clear transition between two extreme dynamical regimes, respectively dominated bypT-limited phase space and by collimated two-jet configurations. A study of the relative populations of two-and three-jet systems reveals two different sources of configurations having three distinct lobes in the pattern of the energy-flow. A first component, steeply falling with energy, receives substantial contributions from soft parton collisions at lower transverse energies. Above 60 GeV a new hard component emerges, characterized by an approximately constant rate with respect to the dominant two-jet structures.

Abstract

In 2004, a combined system test was performed in the H8 beam line at the CERN SPS with a setup reproducing the geometry of sectors of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer, formed by three stations of Monitored Drift Tubes (MDT). The full ATLAS analysis chain was used to obtain the results presented in this paper. The basic design performances of the Muon Spectrometer were verified. The stability of MDT calibration constants, the alignment system using optical devices and high energy tracks, as well as the intrinsic sagitta resolution of the Muon Spectrometer were studied and found to agree with expectations. The reconstruction of muon tracks using the combined information from both the Inner Detector and the Muon Spectrometer are also presented. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.
