Second harmonic generation (SHG) is prohibited in centrosymmetric crystals such as silicon or germanium due to the presence of inversion symmetry. However, the structuring of such materials makes it possible to break the inversion symmetry, thus achieving generation of second-harmonic. Moreover, various symmetry properties of the resulting structure, such as chirality, also influence the SHG. In this work we investigate second harmonic generation from an array of nanohelices made of germanium. The intensity of the second harmonic displayed a remarkable enhancement of over 100 times compared to a non-structured Ge thin film, revealing the influence of interaction between nanohelices. In particular, nonlinear circular dichroism, characterized through the SHG anisotropy factor g, changed its sign not only with the helix handedness, but with its density as well. Efficient trapping of light in nanostructures is essential for the development of optical devices that are based on the interaction between light and matter. In this work, we show theoretically and experimentally that one-dimensional arrays of subwavelength dielectric Mie-resonant particles can support collective resonances with increased $Q$-factors. We demonstrate that the increase of the $Q$-factor can be explained by interaction between the collective electric and magnetic dipole modes of the chain resulting in appearance of the inflection point at the band edge. In this work, we employ differential evolution algorithm to identify the optimal configurations of small atomic ensembles supporting quantum states with maximal radiative lifetime. We demonstrate that atoms mostly tend to assemble in quasi-regular structures with specific geometry strongly depending on the minimal interatomic distance $r_{min}$. We identified the clear underlying physics that governs the suppression of the radiative losses in particular geometries. However, we reveal that the specific configurations in small ensembles are not easily predictable based on the knowledge established for the arrays of large size. In particular, the states that inherit their properties from bound states in continuum in infinite lattices turn out to be the most subradiant in a wide range of $r_{min}$ values. We also show that for small interatomic distance the chains with modulated interatomic distances exhibit fast exponential decrease of the radiative losses with the size of the ensemble.

The optically trapped ensembles of atoms provide a versatile platform for storing and coherent manipulation of quantum information. However, efficient realization of quantum information processing requires long-lived quantum states protected from the decoherence e.g. via spontaneous emission. Here, we theoretically study collective dipolar oscillations in finite planar arrays of quantum emitters in free space and analyze mechanisms that govern the emergence of strongly subradiant collective states. We demonstrate that the external coupling between the collective states associated with the symmetry of the array and with the quasi-flat dispersion of the corresponding infinite lattice plays a crucial role in the boost of their radiative lifetime. We show that among different regular arrangements of the atoms the square atomic arrays support eigenstates with minimal radiative losses that scale with the total number of atoms $N_{tot}$ as $\propto N_{tot}^{-5}$.

Acoustic forces and torques are of immense importance for manipulation of particles, in particular in biomedical applications. While such forces and torques are well understood for small spherical particles with lowest-order monopole and dipole responses, the higher-order effects for larger anisotropic particles have not been properly investigated. Here we examine the acoustic force and torque on an anisotropic (ellipsoid) particle and reveal two novel phenomena. First, we describe the lateral recoil force, orthogonal to the direction of the incident wave and determined by the tilted orientation of the particle. Second, we find conditions for the stable acoustic lift, where the balanced torque and force produce a stable lateral drift of the tilted particle. We argue that these phenomena can bring about new functionalities in acoustic manipulation and sorting of anisotropic particles including biological objects such as blood cells., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Arrays of coupled dipole emitters support collective single- and multiphoton states that can preserve quantum excitations. One of the crucial characteristics of these states is the lifetime, which is fundamentally limited due to spontaneous emission. Here, we present a mechanism of external coupling of two states via the radiation continuum, which allows for an increase in the lifetime of both single and double excitations. As an illustrative example, we consider a ring-like ensemble of quantum emitters, demonstrating that upon slight optimization of the structure geometry, one can increase the lifetime of singly and doubly excited states with non-zero orbital momentum by several orders of magnitude.

The control of light through all-optical means is a fundamental challenge in nanophotonics and a key effect in optical switching and logic. The optical bistability effect enables this control and can be observed in various planar photonic systems such as microdisk and photonic crystal cavities and waveguides. However, the recent advancements in flat optics with wavelength-thin optical elements require nonlinear elements based on metastructures and metasurfaces. The performance of these systems can be enhanced with high-Q bound states in the continuum (BIC), which leads to intense harmonic generation, improved light-matter coupling, and pushes forward sensing limits. In this study, we report on the enhanced thermo-optical nonlinearity and the observation of optical bistability in an all-dielectric metasurface membrane with BICs. Unlike many other nanophotonic platforms, metasurfaces allow for fine control of the quality factor of the BIC resonance by managing the radiative losses. This provides an opportunity to control the parameters of the observed hysteresis loop and even switch from bistability to optical discrimination by varying the angle of incidence. Additionally, we propose a mechanism of nonlinear critical coupling that establishes the conditions for maximal hysteresis width and minimal switching power, which has not been reported before. Our work suggests that all-dielectric metasurfaces supporting BICs can serve as a flat-optics platform for optical switching and modulation based on strong thermo-optical nonlinearity.

In the field of optics and nanophotonics, simulation of electromagnetic scattering plays a major role in the study of complex nanostructures and optical devices. The numerical analysis of scattering spectra, even for nanocavities with simple geometry, is associated with significant computational difficulties. However, when the system exhibits certain symmetries, it becomes possible to simplify the problem through the process of separation of variables, which leads to a decrease in its dimension. In this paper, we aim to provide a practical guide to a fast simulation of linear and non-linear scattering problems in COMSOL Multiphysics for axisymmetric objects including computation of scattering cross-section as well as its multipolar decomposition, optical forces, and second harmonic generation. We also accompany the provided guide with the ready-to-run COMSOL models.

Optical bistability is fundamental for all-optical switches, but typically requires high-Q cavities with micrometer sizes. Through boosting nonlinearity with photo-thermo-optical effects, we achieve bistability in a silicon Mie resonator with a volume size of 10-3 um3 and Q-factor < 10, both are record-low. Furthermore, bistable scattering naturally leads to large super-linear emission-excitation power dependence, which we applied to enhance optical resolution by more than 3 times. Our work paves the way toward nanoscale photonics computation and label-free semiconductor nano-inspection.

Exceptional points (EPs) have been widely studied in quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, optics and photonics. However, their potential in acoustics has only recently been recognized due to the rapid development of acoustic metamaterials. This paper proposes a method for achieving EP conditions in acoustic resonators by lowering their symmetry and enabling resonant mode interaction. The formation of EPs is predicted through direct numerical simulation supported by coupled mode theory and resonant state expansion. Optically-induced mechanical torque leading to the rotation of small objects requires the presence of absorption or breaking cylindrical symmetry of a scatterer. A spherical non-absorbing particle cannot rotate due to the conservation of the angular momentum of light upon scattering. Here, we suggest a novel physical mechanism for the angular momentum transfer to non-absorbing particles via nonlinear light scattering. The breaking of symmetry occurs at the microscopic level manifested in nonlinear negative optical torque due to the excitation of resonant states at the harmonic frequency with higher projection of angular momentum. Bianisotropy of metaatoms is usually associated with their nonlocal response and the mutual coupling between electric and magnetic dipole moments induced by the incident field. In this work, we generalize the theory of bianisotropy beyond the dipole response to the cases of arbitrary high-order multipole resonances. We demonstrate that bianisotropy is exclusively caused by the absence of the inversion symmetry of metaatoms. The strength of the bianisotropy response is normally increased with the size of a meta-atom but its origin is fully connected to the symmetry of the structure. As an important example of bianisotropic particle, we consider a triangular prism and show how accounting for the higher-order multipoles prevents the violation of the Onsager-Casimir conditions for kinetic coefficients appearing in the dipole approximation. Optical heating of resonant nanostructures is one of the key issues in modern nanophotonics, being either harmful or desirable effect depending on the applications. Despite a linear regime of light-to-heat conversion is well-studied both for metal and semiconductor resonant systems generalized as critical coupling condition, the clear strategy to optimize optical heating upon high-intensity light irradiation is still missing. In this work, we propose a simple analytical model for such problem taking into account material properties changes caused by the heating. It allows us to derive a new general critical coupling condition for the nonlinear case, requiring counterintuitive initial spectral mismatch between the pumping light frequency and resonant one. Basing on the suggested strategy, we develop an optimized design for efficient nonlinear optical heating, which employs a cylindrical nanoparticle supporting quasi bound state in the continuum mode (quasi-BIC or so-called `super-cavity mode') excited by the incident azimuthal vector beam. Our approach provides a background for various nonlinear experiments related to optical heating and bistability, where self-action of the intense laser beam can change resonant properties of the irradiated nanostructure.

In recent years resonant semiconductor and all-dielectric nanophotonics offered a lot of possibilities for thermally-induced light manipulation at the nanoscale. Owing to high-quality resonant states, such nanostructures allow for efficient light-to-heat conversion supported by various temperature detection approaches based on thermally sensitive intrinsic optical responses (photoluminescence, Raman scattering, thermorefraction etc.). In this work, we study theoretically a phenomenon of the photothermal reshaping of the radiation pattern of second-harmonic generation (SHG) that occurs in resonant all-dielectric systems. In the suggested geometry near-IR pulsed laser is utilized for excitation of SHG while simultaneous continuous wave visible laser heats the structure. The thermooptical switching of the resonant optical states in the nanostructures governs the reconfiguration of the emission pattern, without significant loss in the magnitude of the SHG. We believe, that our findings will pave the way for subwavelength-size near-IR thermally switchable nonlinear optical devices.

We present a wearable device with III-V nanowires in a flexible polymer, which is used for active mechanical tuning of the second-harmonic generation intensity. An array of vertical GaAs nanowires was grown with metalorganic vapour-phase epitaxy, then embedded in polydimethylsiloxane and detached from the rigid substrate with mechanical peel off. Experimental results show a tunability of the second-harmonic generation intensity by a factor of two for 30% stretching which matches the simulations including the distribution of sizes. We studied the impact of different parameters on the band dispersion and tunability of the second-harmonic generation, such as the pitch, the length, and the diameter. We predict at least three orders of magnitude active mechanical tuning of the nonlinear signal intensity for nanowire arrays. Acoustics recently became a versatile platform for discovering novel physical effects and concepts at a relatively simple technological level. On this way, single resonators and the structure of their resonant modes play a central role and define the properties of complex acoustic systems such as acoustic metamaterials, phononic crystals, and topological structures. In this paper, we present a powerful method allowing a qualitative analysis of eigenmodes of resonators in the linear monochromatic acoustic domain based on multipole classification of eigenmodes. Using the apparatus of group theory, we explain and predict the structure of the scattered field knowing only the symmetry group of the resonator by connecting the multipolar content of incident and scattered fields. Such an approach can be utilized for developing resonators with predesigned properties avoiding time-consuming simulations. Exciting optical effects such as polarization control, imaging, and holography were demonstrated at the nanoscale using the complex and irregular structures of nanoparticles with the multipole Mie-resonances in the optical range. The optical response of such particles can be simulated either by full wave numerical simulations or by the widely used analytical coupled multipole method (CMM), however, an analytical solution in the framework of CMM can be obtained only in a limited number of cases. In this paper, a modification of the CMM in the framework of the Born series and its applicability for simulation of light scattering by finite nanosphere structures, maintaining both dipole and quadrupole resonances, are investigated. The Born approximation simplifies an analytical consideration of various systems and helps shed light on physical processes ongoing in that systems. Using Mie theory and Green's functions approach, we analytically formulate the rigorous coupled dipole-quadrupole equations and their solution in the different-order Born approximations. We analyze in detail the resonant scattering by dielectric nanosphere structures such as dimer and ring to obtain the convergence conditions of the Born series and investigate how the physical characteristics such as absorption in particles, type of multipole resonance, and geometry of ensemble influence the convergence of Born series and its accuracy.

We reveal that finite-size solid acoustic resonators can support genuine bound states in the continuum (BICs) completely localized inside the resonator. The developed theory provides the multipole classification of such BICs in the resonators of various shapes. It is shown how breaking of the resonator's symmetry turns BICs into quasi-BICs manifesting themselves in the scattering spectra as high-Q Fano resonances. We believe that the revealed novel states will push the performance limits of acoustic devices and will serve as high-Q building blocks for acoustic sensors, antennas, and topological acoustic structures., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Nanophotonics is an important branch of modern optics dealing with light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. Nanoparticles can exhibit enhanced light absorption under illumination by light, and they become nanoscale sources of heat that can be precisely controlled and manipulated. For metal nanoparticles, such effects have been studied in the framework of $\textit{thermoplasmonics}$ which, similar to plasmonics itself, has a number of limitations. Recently emerged $\textit{all-dielectric resonant nanophotonics}$ is associated with optically-induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances, and this field is developing very rapidly in the last decade. As a result, thermoplasmonics is being replaced by $\textit{all-dielectric thermonanophotonics}$ with many important applications such as photothermal cancer therapy, drug and gene delivery, nanochemistry, and photothermal imaging. This review paper aims to introduce this new field of non-plasmonic nanophotonics and discuss associated thermally-induced processes at the nanoscale.

Versatile manipulation of nano- and microobjects underlies the optomechanics and a variety of its applications in biology, medicine, and lab-on-a-chip platforms. For flexible tailoring optical forces, as well as for extraordinary optomechanical effects, additional degrees of freedom should be introduced into the system. Here, we demonstrate that photonic crystals provide a flexible platform for nanoparticles optical manipulation due to both Bloch surface waves (BSWs) and the complex character of the reflection coefficient paving a way for complex optomechanical interactions control. We demonstrate that appearance of enhanced pulling and pushing transversal optical forces acting on a single bead placed above a one-dimensional photonic crystal due to directional excitation of Bloch surface wave at the photonic crystal interface. Our theoretical results, which are supported with numerical simulations, demonstrate angle or wavelength assisted switching between BSW-induced optical pulling and pushing forces. Easy-to-fabricate for any desired spectral range photonic crystals are shown to be prospective for precise optical sorting of nanoparticles, especially for core-shell nanoparticles, which are difficult to sort with conventional optomechanical methods. Our approach opens opportunities for novel optical manipulation schemes and platforms and enhanced light-matter interaction in optical trapping setups.

We study nonlinear response of a dimer composed of two identical Mie-resonant dielectric nanoparticles illuminated normally by a circularly polarized light. We develop a general theory describing hybridization of multipolar modes of the coupled nanoparticles, and reveal nonvanishing nonlinear circular dichroism (CD) in the second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal enhanced by the multipolar resonances in the dimer provided its axis is oriented under an angle to the crystalline lattice of the dielectric material. We present experimental results for this SHG-CD effect obtained for the AlGaAs dimers placed on an engineered substrate which confirm the basic prediction of our general multipolar hybridization theory.

This review describes the emerging field of waveguide quantum electrodynamics (WQED) concerned with the interaction of photons propagating in a waveguide with localized quantum emitters. The collective emitter-photon interactions can lead to both enhanced and suppressed coupling compared to the case of independent emitters. Here, we focus on guided photons and ordered arrays, leading to super- and sub-radiant states, bound photon states and quantum correlations with promising quantum information applications. We highlight recent groundbreaking experiments performed with different quantum platforms, including cold atoms, superconducting qubits, semiconductor quantum dots, quantum solid-state defects, and we provide a comprehensive introduction to theoretical techniques to study the interactions and dynamics of these emitters and the photons in the waveguide., Comment: 64 pages, 36 figures, 2 tables. We introduce a novel physical mechanism for achieving giant quality factors ($Q$-factors) in finite-length periodic arrays of subwavelength optical resonators. The underlying physics is based on interference between the band-edge mode and another standing mode in the array, and the formation of spatially localized states with dramatically suppressed radiative losses. We demonstrate this concept for an array of $N$ dipoles with simultaneous cancellation of multipoles up to $N$-th order and the $Q$ factor growing as $Q \propto N^{\alpha}$, where $\alpha \gtrsim 6.88$. Based on this finding, we propose a realistic array of Mie-resonant nanoparticles ($N \lesssim 29$) with a dramatic enhancement of the Purcell factor (up to $\sim $3400) achieved by tuning of the array parameters.

Creation of correlated photon pairs is one of the key topics in contemporary quantum optics. Here, we theoretically describe the generation of photon pairs in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a resonant spherical nanoparticle made of a dielectric material with bulk $\chi^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. We pick the nanoparticle size that satisfies the condition of resonant eigenmodes described by Mie theory. We reveal that highly directional photon-pair generation can be observed utilising the nonlinear Kerker-type effect, and that this regime provides useful polarisation correlations.

In this paper, we demonstrate the infrared photoluminescence emission from Ge(Si) quantum dots enhanced with collective Mie modes of silicon nanopillars. We show that the excitation of band edge dipolar modes of a linear nanopillar array results in strong reshaping of the photoluminescence spectra. Among other collective modes, the magnetic dipolar mode with the polarization along the array axis contributes the most to the emission spectrum exhibiting an experimentally measured Q-factor of around 500 for an array of 11 pillars. The results belong to the first experimental evidence of light emission enhancement of quantum emitters applying collective Mie resonances and therefore represent an important contribution to the new field of active all-dielectric meta-optics.

We consider a generation of two-particle quantum states in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion of light by a dielectric nanoparticle with $\chi^{(2)}$ response. As a particular example, we study the generation of surface plasmon-polariton pairs with a ${\rm GaAs}$ nanoparticle located at the silver-air interface. We show that for certain excitation geometries, ${\rm N00N}$-states of surface plasmon-polariton pairs could be obtained. The effect can be physically interpreted as a result of quantum interference between pairs of induced sources, each emitting either signal or idler plasmon. We then relate the resulting ${\rm N00N}$-pattern to the general symmetry properties of dyadic Green's function of a dipole emitter exciting surface waves. It renders the considered effect as a general way towards a robust generation of ${\rm N00N}$-states of surface waves using spontaneous parametric down-conversion in $\chi^{(2)}$ nanoparticles., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Metasurfaces based on resonant subwavelength photonic structures enable novel ways of wavefront control and light focusing, underpinning a new generation of flat-optics devices. Recently emerged all-dielectric metasurfaces exhibit high-quality resonances underpinned by the physics of bound states in the continuum that drives many interesting concepts in photonics. Here we suggest a novel approach to explain the physics of bound photonic states embedded into the radiation continuum. We study dielectric metasurfaces composed of planar periodic arrays of Mie-resonant nanoparticles ("meta-atoms") which support both symmetry protected and accidental bound states in the continuum and employ the multipole decomposition approach to reveal the physical mechanism of the formation of such nonradiating states in terms of multipolar modes generated by isolated meta-atoms. Based on the symmetry of the vector spherical harmonics, we identify the conditions for the existence of bound states in the continuum originating from the symmetries of both the lattice and the unit cell. Using this formalism we predict that metasurfaces with strongly suppressed spatial dispersion can support the bound states in the continuum with the wavevectors forming a line in the reciprocal space. Auxiliary nanostructures introduce additional flexibility into optomechanical manipulation schemes. Metamaterials and metasurfaces capable to control electromagnetic interactions at the near-field regions are especially beneficial for achieving improved spatial localization of particles, reducing laser powers required for trapping, and for tailoring directivity of optical forces. Here, optical forces acting on small particles situated next to anisotropic substrates, are investigated. A special class of hyperbolic metasurfaces is considered in details and is shown to be beneficial for achieving strong optical pulling forces in a broad spectral range. Spectral decomposition of the Green functions enables identifying contributions of different interaction channels and underlines the importance of the hyperbolic dispersion regime, which plays the key role in optomechanical interactions. Homogenised model of the hyperbolic metasurface is compared to its metal-dielectric multilayer realizations and is shown to predict the optomechanical behaviour under certain conditions related to composition of the top layer of the structure and its periodicity. Optomechanical metasurfaces open a venue for future fundamental investigations and a range of practical applications, where accurate control over mechanical motion of small objects is required.

We develop a multipolar theory of second-harmonic generation (SHG) by dielectric nanoparticles made of noncentrosymmetric materials with bulk quadratic nonlinearity. We specifically analyze two regimes of optical excitation: illumination by a plane wave and single-mode excitation, when the laser pump drives the magnetic dipole mode only. Considering two classes of nonlinear crystalline solids (dielectric perovskite material and III-V semiconductor), we apply a symmetry approach to derive selection rules for the multipolar composition of the nonlinear radiation. Resonantly enhanced Raman scattering in dielectric nanostructures has been recently proven to be an effcient tool for developing nanothermometry and experimental determination of their mode- composition. In this paper, we develop a rigorous analytical theory based on the Green's function approach to calculate the Raman emission from crystalline high-index dielectric nanoparticles. As an example, we consider silicon nanoparticles which have a strong Raman response due to active optical phonon modes. We relate enhancement of Raman signal emission to Purcell effect due to the excitation of Mie modes inside the nanoparticles. We also employ the numerical approach to the calculation of inelastic Raman emission in more sophisticated geometries, which do not allow a straightforward analytical form of the Green's function description. The Raman response from a silicon nanodisk has been analyzed within the proposed method, and the contribution of the various Mie modes has been revealed.

Optical binding allows creation of mechanically stable nanoparticle configurations owing to formation of self-consistent optical trapping potentials. While the classical diffraction limit prevents achieving deeply subwavelength arrangements, auxiliary nanostructures enable tailoring optical forces via additional interaction channels. Here, a dimer configuration next to metal surface was analyzed in details and the contribution of surface plasmon polariton waves was found to govern the interaction dynamics. It was shown that the interaction channel, mediated by resonant surface waves, enables achieving subwavelength stable dimers. Furthermore, the vectorial structure of surface modes allows binding between two dipole nanoparticles along the direction of their dipole moments, contrary to vacuum binding, where a stable configuration is formed in the direction oriented perpendicularly to the polarization of dipole moments. In addition, the enhancement of optical binding stiffness for one order of magnitude was predicted owing to the surface plasmon polariton interaction channel. These phenomena pave a way for developing new flexible optical manipulators, allowing for the control over a nanoparticle trajectory on subwavelength scales and opens a room of opportunities for optical-induced anisotropic, i.e. with different periods along the field polarization as well as perpendicular to it, organization of particles on a plasmonic substrate.

Nanoantennas for highly efficient excitation and manipulation of surface waves at nanoscale are key elements of compact photonic circuits. However, previously implemented designs employ plasmonic nanoantennas with high Ohmic losses, relatively low spectral resolution, and complicated lithographically made architectures. Here we propose an ultracompact and simple dielectric nanoantenna (silicon nanosphere) allowing for both directional launching of surface plasmon polaritons on a thin gold film and their demultiplexing with a high spectral resolution. We show experimentally that mutual interference of magnetic and electric dipole moments supported by the dielectric nanoantenna results in opposite propagation of the excited surface waves whose wavelengths differ by less than 50 nm in the optical range. Broadband reconfigurability of the nanoantennas operational range is achieved simply by varying the diameter of the silicon sphere. Moreover, despite subwavelength size ($<\lambda/3$) of the proposed nanoantennas, they demonstrate highly efficient and directional launching of surface waves both in the forward and backward directions with the measured front-to-back ratio having a contrast of almost two orders of magnitude within a 50 nm spectral band. Rabi oscillations is a key phenomenon among the variety of quantum optical effects that manifests itself in the periodic oscillations of a two-level system between the ground and excited states when interacting with electromagnetic field. Commonly, the rate of these oscillations scales proportionally with the magnitude of the electric field probed by the two-level system. Here, we investigate the interaction of light with a two-level quantum emitter possessing permanent dipole moments. The semi-classical approach to this problem predicts slowing down and even full suppression of Rabi oscillations due to asymmetry in diagonal components of the dipole moment operator of the two-level system. We consider behavior of the system in the fully quantized picture and establish the analytical condition of Rabi oscillations collapse. These results for the first time emphasize the behavior of two-level systems with permanent dipole moments in the few photon regime, and suggest observation of novel quantum optical effects.

The Purcell effect is usually described as a modification of the spontaneous decay rate in the presence of a resonator. In plasmonics, this effect is commonly associated with a large local-field enhancement in "hot spots" due to the excitation of surface plasmons. However, high-index dielectric nanostructures, which become the basis of all-dielectric nanophotonics, can not provide high values of the local-field enhancement due to larger radiation losses. Here, we demonstrate how to achieve a strong Purcell effect in all-dielectric nanostructures, and show theoretically that the Purcell factor can be increased by two orders of magnitude in a finite chain of silicon nanoparticles. Using the eigenmode analysis for an infinite chain, we demonstrate that the high Purcell factor regime is associated with a Van Hove singularity. We perform a proof-of-concept experiment for microwave frequencies and observe the 65-fold enhancement of the Purcell factor in a chain of 10 dielectric particles., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1506.07276

In this paper we suggest a simple analytical method for description of electromagnetic properties of a geometrically regular two-dimensional subwavelength arrays (metasurfaces) formed by particles with randomly fluctuating polarizabilities. Such metasurfaces are of topical importance due to development of mass-scale bottom-up fabrication methods, for which fluctuations of the particles sizes, shapes, and/or composition are inevitable. Understanding and prediction of electromagnetic properties of such random metasurfaces is a challenge. We propose an analytical homogenization method applicable for normal wave incidence on particles arrays with dominating electric dipole responses and validate it with numerical point-dipole modeling using the supercell approach. We demonstrate that fluctuations of particles polarizabilities lead to increased diffuse scattering despite the subwavelength lattice constant of the array. All-dielectric nanostructures have recently emerged as a promising alternative to plasmonic devices, as they also possess pronounced electric and magnetic resonances and allow effective light manipulation. In this work, we study optical properties of a composite structure that consists of a silicon nanoparticle array (metasurface) and high-index substrate aiming at clarifying the role of substrate on reflective properties of the nanoparticles. We develop a simple semi-analytical model that describes interference of separate contributions from nanoparticle array and the bare substrate to the total reflection. Applying this model, we show that matching the magnitudes and setting the {\pi}-phase difference of the electric and magnetic dipole moments induced in nanoparticles, one can obtain a suppression of reflection from the substrate coated with metasurface. We perform numerical simulations of sphere and disk nanoparticle arrays for different permittivities of the substrate. We find full agreement with the semi-analytical results, which means that the uncoupled-element model adequately describes nanostructure reflective properties, despite the effects of induced bi-anisotropy. The model explains the features of the reflectance spectrum, such as a number of dips and their spectral positions, and show why it may not coincide with the spectral positions of Mie resonances of the single nanoparticles forming the system. We also address practical aspects of the antireflective device engineering: we show that the uncoupled-element model is applicable to the structures on top of silicon substrates, including lithographically defined nanopillars. The reflectance suppression from nanoparticle array on top of the silicon substrate can be achieved in a broad spectral range with disordered nanoparticle array and for a wide range of incidence angles.

We study numerically, analytically and experimentally the resonant transmission of light in a waveguide formed by a periodic array of high-index dielectric nanoparticles with a side-coupled resonator. We demonstrate that a resonator with high enough Q-factor provides the conditions for the Fano-type interference allowing to control the resonant transmission of light. We suggest a practical realization of this resonant effect based on the quadrupole resonance of a dielectric particle and demonstrate it experimentally for ceramic spheres at microwaves.

Here we propose a novel strategy for enhancing the Purcell effect through engineering the radiation directivity without a strict requirement of the local field enhancement. Employing this approach, we demonstrate how to enhance the Purcell effect by two orders of magnitude in all-dielectric nanostructures recently suggested as building blocks of low-loss nanophotonics and metamaterials. We support our concept by proof-of-principle microwave experiments with arrays of high-index dielectric resonators.
