Thyroid carcinoma (TC) is the most common endocrine malignancy. Although the overall prognosis for patients with TC is good, up to 20-30% of patients have recurrent or persistent disease after conventional therapy by surgical resection and radioactive iodine (RAI). Amiodarone is a highly efficient anti-arrhythmic drug with a very long half-life, so it may interfere with RAI many months after the drug withdrawal. Objectives. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the traditional risk factors (TRD-RF) and new atherosclerosis (ATS) risk factors analyzed at three levels: the carotid, aortic valve and peripheral. We have studied and compared two groups of patients: patients with subclinical ATS (SCL-ATS) and patients with clinical ATS (CLATS). Materials and methods. Our study considered 96 patients with an average age of 61.5 years ± 5.6 years. Half of them presented SCL-ATS: at carotidian, valvular aortic level or shown reduced systolic ankle-brachial index (ABI). The other half formed the group of patients with clinical stage ATS. We analyzed and compared the presence of TRD-RF of ATS and the new risk factors (RF), specifically the fibrinogen F) and C-reactive protein (CRP). Results. Smoking, overweight and obesity, low values of diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse pressure (PP) with values above normal, increased lipid fractions and CRP values were the cardiovascular RF observed for the two studied groups. In univariate analysis, high levels of significance have shown DBP (for the carotid impairment) and PP (for carotid and peripheral impairment). The multivariate analysis selected as independent predictors DBP and F for carotid impairment and PP for the aortic valve and vascular peripheral ATS. Conclusions. RF-TRD and new RF prove their role in ATS development at different levels. Lower DBP and increased values of PP, as indicators of arterial stiffness, shown different values depending on the location of the ATS stage, SCLATS or CL-ATS. High levels of PCR prove the role of inflammation in the ATS. In the peripheral arterial disease, an increased number of smoker patients and with increased level of CRP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oxidative stress may result from either overproduction of free radicals or from insufficiency of several antioxidant defence systems. Thyroid hormones have well-known effects on mitochondrial oxygen consumption, but data about how hypothyroidism affects oxidative stress are controversial. The aim of the study was to investigate the oxidant and antioxidant status in propylthiouracil-induced hypothyroidism and the effect of vitamin E supplementation on this experimental model. Materials and Methods. Thirty male Wistar rats were used in the study. Hypothyroidism was induced by administering Propylthiouracil (5mg/100g animal /day) for 30 days. Plasma was used to determine malondialdehyde (MDA), carbonyl proteins, SH groups, glutathion (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) while MDA, carbonyl proteins, SH groups and GSH were determined from the thyroid gland. Results. In plasma and thyroid homogenate of hypothyroid rats, the lipid peroxidation did not differ significantly from the control group. Carbonyl proteins levels increased significantly in serum and thyroid tissue of hypothyroid animals as compared to the control group. Antioxidant parameters SH groups, GSH and SOD levels did not show any significant changes. Vitamin E supplementation significantly increased carbonyl proteins levels and decreased SH, GSH and SOD levels compared with the Propylthiouracil treated group. Conclusions. The control mechanisms of respiration as a vital function are complex: voluntary - cortical, and involuntary - metabolic, neural, emotional and endocrine. Hormones and hypothalamic neuropeptides (that act as neurotrasmitters and neuromodulators in the central nervous system) play a role in the regulation of respiration and in bronchopulmonary morphology. This article presents respiratory manifestations in adult endocrine diseases that evolve with hormone deficit or hypersecretion. In hyperthyroidism, patients develop ventilation disorders, obstructive and central sleep apnea, and pleural collection. The respiratory abnormalities in hyperthyroidism as a result of the hypermetabolic action of thyroid hormones are hyperventilation, myopathy and cardiovascular involvement; recent studies have reported pulmonary arterial hypertension in Graves' disease, as a result of the association of several mechanisms. Thyroid hypertrophy can induce through compression of the upper airways dyspnea, stridor, wheezing and cough. The respiratory disorders in acromegaly are ventilatory dysfunction and sleep apnea, which contribute to an unfavorable evolution of the disease. Respiratory changes in parathyroid, adrenal and reproductive system diseases have been described. Respiratory disorders should be recognized, investigated and monitored by medical practitioners of various specialties (family physicians, internists, endocrinologists, pneumologists, cardiologists).
